PGS S44 Game 78: COL @ KEL
#1

Colorado Raptors at Kelowna Knights
Game 78
Raptors 3 - Knights 2 (OT)

The young Raptors weathered another powerful offensive attack, being outshot for the fourth straight game, but pulling out a win in overtime. Going into this game, Kelowna was 3-0 in overtime/shoot out games, while Colorado was 0-2 in extra time.

Period 1
Shots: Raptors 9 Knights 12
Score: Raptors 1 Knights 0

The teams traded shots and powerplays throughout the period. Colorado killed a penalty in the first minute on Philipp Winter, then killed another penalty against Nico Wallner at 13:02. Coming off the momentum of that second kill, Oliver Dahl took a cross checking penalty at 16:14 and the Raptors capitalized. Kevin Maddox beat Scott Foster just 22 seconds into the powerplay, off a pass from rookie Konstantin Voloshin to Sachimo Zoidberg, Jr, across the point to Maddox for his second of the year and first of the night. Colorado forward Keegan Angello went off for hooking a minute and a half later, but the Raptors were able to kill another Knights power play.

Period 2
Shots: Raptors 7 (16) Knights 9 (21)
Score: Raptors 0 (1) Knights 2 (2)

The period opened with Boris Denisovich drawing a tripping call on Vladimir Vaskov. Despite their strong play in period 1, the Raptors surrendered a power play goal shortly after. Tye Maximino dangled around Nico Wallner and feathered a pass to Justin Siddals, who slid the puck back to the point, where Antonio Calculon crushed the puck for his first goal of the season. Rasmus Rasmus took a roughing penalty just 46 seconds later, allowing Colorado the chance to break the tie. They failed to do so, and then the teams traded chances at even strength. Vaskov fumbled the puck in the neutral zone, creating a partial breakaway for Kelowna rookie Nolan Sawchuk. Rather than allow the forward a chance at Crawfling, Vaskov hauled him down with his stick and went to the box at 7:25. Kelowna failed to answer, and looked like they would go into the third tied 1-1. Maximino had other plans, burying a rebound from a Siddals shot with just 33 seconds remaining. The Knights went into the second period with a one goal lead.

Period 3
Shots: Raptors 3 (19) Knights 7 (28)
Score: Raptors 1 (2) Knights 0 (2)

Kelowna made adjustments between periods and tightened their defense, holding the Raptors to just three shots in the last 20 minutes. Colorado’s offense was further stifled by three ill-timed penalties. Philipp Winter was called for tripping early in the period, leading to Kelowna’s sixth power play chance, but the Knights failed to convert.

Despite the stifling defensive play of the Knights, Alex Winters was able to sneak a shot past Foster at 11:20 to tie the game. Philipp Winter protected the puck along the half boards, then tipped it back to Wallner at the point. Wallner nearly lost control, but hot-potatoed the puck to Winters, who deked once and flipped a backhander past Foster. That was the last of the offense for the Raptors, as Keegan Angello took his second and third penalties in short order (holding the stick at 13:19; holding at 17:29), effectively killing any offensive momentum for his team. Despite this turn, Colorado was able to keep the puck out of their net.

Scottey Crawfling was out of his mind, trapping pucks and challenging shooters at all opportunities.

Overtime
Shots: Raptors 2 (21) Knights 0 (28)
Score: Raptors 1 (3) Knights 0 (2)

The teams entered the extra frame with all the momentum Kelowna’s way. Rookie Nickolas Klaus killed that with a hooking penalty at 0:36 of overtime. In the ensuing powerplay, Colorado took two shots, including Philipp Winters fluttering snap shot that beat Foster high stick side for the game winner. The infatigable top pairing of Maddox and Zoidberg recorded the power play assists on the goal, their 16th and 13th, respectively.

Three Stars
1.     Kevin Maddox Raptors
2.     Tye Maximino Knights
3.     Sachimo Zoidberg Jr Raptors

The Raptors improve to 9-9-2 on the season and have won three of their last five. The Knights have dropped four of five and seven of their last nine. After a blistering 7-1 record to start the year, the Knights now sit at 10-9-1. The teams will play once more on Day 42 at InGEN Arena. Kelowna leads the season series 3-1-1.

Comment One:

Timo Haas' Goalie of the Game

Our goaltender of the game this evening is Scottey Crawfling of the Colorado Raptors. Scottey came into the game at an even 8-8 record throughout the season and has played good at times and been barraged at others. Tonight Crawfling showed what his game can truly be about as he stopped 26 of 28 shots and was a difference maker for the Colorado Raptors. The young goalie performed well under pressure and held strong in the 3rd period as Colorado was outshot 7-3 throughout the period. Moving into the OT period he finally didn't have to hold strong as the offense made the Knights pay for a penalty they took in the OT period. But before that the Raptor's goaltender was excellent. Easily earning the Timo Haas Goalie of the Game Award.

Comment Two:

Unsung Hero(es) brought to you by Virgin Mobile

Tonight's unsung hero award goes to Alexander Selich of the Colorado Raptors. The number one overall selection in the S44 SMJHL Draft, Alex Selich has had an up and down season. While he has had blistering nights where he has scored multiple goals. He has had nights like tonight too where he will pitch in in other ways. Tonight Selich blocked two key shots and was a defensive anchor for his team. Who said that young stars can't be roleplayers as well. His role tonight was to stop the Kelowna Knights defensively and he did so in spades. We can see why Selich was draft so high, the young German can lay the boom, block shots, score, and set people up. A truly great player.

Comment Three:

Carl's Jr. Star of the Game

Our Carl's Jr. Star of the Game is Defender Kevin Maddox. Known to his teammates as Maddog, Maddox had a killer game tonight. Scoring once and assisting on the game winning goal. His first period goal set the tone for the Raptors and given time on the powerplay with Winter and Zoidberg, in the overtime period, he was the primary assister on the game winning goal. Maddog played rabid tonight adding in two blocks and physical presence needed to help the Raptors topple the Knights. With more play like this from one of their top defenders, the Colorado Raptors can possibly expect a run into the playoffs. Little else is to be said about Kevin "Maddog" Maddox, but that he is truly an anchor player for the Colorado Raptors.

Dominos Play of the Game

Near the midway of the third period of a tough game between the Colorado Raptors and Kelowna Knights a loose puck was leaped on by Nico Wallner. He hurriedly shot the puck towards the net which it met the flesh of one Rasmus Rasmus of the Kelowna Knights. Alex Winters was quick though, and got to that 50/50 puck quickly enough to get another shot off on the Knights goaltender. The puck squeaked by and 2-2 was now the new score. Sure enough this goal allowed the Colorado Raptors to go to overtime and win the entire game. This is tonight's Dominos play of the game.

Unsung Player of the Game:
This unsung player of the game goes to Sachimo Zoidberg Jr of the Colorado Raptors. While other players had a rather flashy game, Zoidberg Jr had a very unremarkable that certainly didn't go unnoticed by the Colorado General Manager and head coach. He had two assists of very different styles, one being a primary assist and the other being a secondary. These assists helped Colorado outscore their opponents. He got off a single shot on net, but had two hard hits that lead to the puck being turned over, and had four blocked shots in this close overtime thriller. You can bet that he'll be getting a bit of extra ice time next game after this studly game from the young defender.

Kelowna Still Having PP Troubles?:
Kelowna was yet again having troubles on the power play. They had eight chances to convert on the power play and they failed all but once. In such a close game such as this Kelowna has to be able to convert on some of these chances if they want to win games. However some are questioning whether it's actually Kelowna being bad on the power play or if it's the fact that Colorado has a strong penalty kill. Having switched staff part way through the season might have affected Kelowna as well as they are running a slightly different system than before which could lead to some confusion. However these are the best young players in the world so they should be able to convert to the new system easy enough. Kelowna has definitely been below average this season and will hopefully improve for next season. The next question on everyone's mind will have to be answered soon, what is Kelowna planning?

TSN Turning Point:
Tonight's TSN Turning Point was in the overtime period when Kelowna Knights rookie Nickolas Klaus took a hooking penalty early. The Knights lost all momentum they had gained late in the third when Keegan Angello took a penalty. This penalty would prove to be costly as Colorado peppered Kelowna's goalie with shots, and eventually with only seconds left in Klaus' penalty Philipp Winter wired a wrist shot past ZzScott Foster. The game was ended and I'm sure Klaus was kicking himself for taking that penalty for days to come afterwards. If that penalty hadn't been taken the game could've ended up very different and that's why it's tonight's TSN Turning Point.
