S68 IIHF HoF Ceremony
#1
(This post was last modified: 02-10-2023, 12:16 AM by MikeLiut. Edited 1 time in total.)

Hello friends and neighbours, welcome to the S68 IIHF HoF Ceremony

The Head Office aimed to revive the IIHF Hall of Fame last season, and the IIHF HoF committee reconvened to evaluate nominations for the S68 class. This was made possible by the efforts of Canadice who provided the IIHF career stats, which were lost during S50.

We are now ready to welcome the next class of Hall of Famers.

How does it work?

This HoF committee is made up of the following members:
  • artermis
  • Count Chocula
  • High Stick King
  • marco999
  • mer
  • RashfordU
  • sköldpaddor
  • TheSparkyDee

The process involves two ballots: one for forwards and one for defensemen and goalies. Eligibility begins in the season following retirement and continues for 10 seasons. Each committee member may vote for up to five players, ranking them 1-5 and assigning points based on their ranking (10, 7, 5, 3, 1). A player needs 35 points to be inducted.

Once again this season, a change has been made. Since the 35-point limit was established for a committee of 10 members, a 1.25 multiplier has been applied to all vote totals to account for the smaller committee size of 8 members.

Players who had retired prior to the opening of the IIHF HoF in S49 had 7 seasons of eligibility remaining prior to this voting session, while those who retired in between the first and second IIHF HoF ceremonies had 8 seasons left.

Who are the new members?

Four new members have been elected. Starting tomorrow, every day we will announce one inductee from this year's class.

Monkey D. Luffy

Japan C - S46-S62 Japan
Career Round Robin Stats:
GP: 204| G: 80| A: 111| P: 191| +/-: -3| HIT: 233| SB: 67

Career Awards:
2x Gold Medal (S59, S60)
1x Silver Medal (S55)

Voting Results:
(1st place votes-2nd place votes, etc.)
3-1-1-1-1
Received 57,5 % of Possible Votes.

Along with Daniel and Parker Smeb, Luffy is one of the players who most captures the imagination when we think of the great performances of the Japanese in the 50s. Luffy was instrumental in winning the gold medal in S59 and S60 and finished the S55 tournament with a record of 21 points (6th best (tied) for a single tournament).

Known first and foremost for his versatility and intelligence, Monkey finished with an average of more than one point per game in seven tournaments. He finished as the 9th highest scorer in the history of the tournament, 7th in assists and 5th in points. He is someone who always prided himself on being part of the Japanese team and he did all he could to bring a gold medal to his nation. He thus deserves, in the eyes of the committee, a place among the legends of the IIHF tournament.

Congratulations @TnlAstatine, you are invited to join the committee if you wish to accept.

Viktor Marius

 Latvia LW – S38-S55 Latvia
Career Round Robin Stats:
GP: 200| G: 81| A: 93| P: 174| +/-: 35| HIT: 307| SB: 76

Career Awards:
1x Silver Medal (S44)
1x Bronze Medal (S46)
1x Top Forward (S44)

Voting Results:
(1st place votes-2nd place votes, etc.)
1-2-3-1-0
Received 52,5% of Possible Votes.

The Committee recognizes the contribution of Viktor Marius to the development of ice hockey in Latvia and his consistency in the 18 tournaments in which he participated.

Known for his shooting skills, with his 81 goals in 200 games, he ranks 4th in tournament history in goals scored and 12th in points. He started to play a more serious role quite young, in the early 40's seasons, and kept contributing more and more, until his retirement in the mid 50's seasons.

It was a few years before he retired that he adopted a more rugged style of play, and was more involved on both sides of the ice. He also ranks 4th in history for the number of hits in a single tournament (62), a feat he accomplished in his mid-thirties.

Viktor Marius ranks 2nd in this cohort, with 52,5 % of possible votes, even though he has never won a gold medal. The Committee recognizes his great contribution and looks forward to seeing him join the hall of fame.

Congratulations @karey, you are invited to join the committee if you wish to accept.

Zallerras Szlerchek

Czechoslovakia LW – S22-S35  Czechoslovakia
Career Round Robin Stats:
GP: 140| G: 45| A: 78| P: 123| +/-: 0| HIT: 358| SB: 62

Career Awards:
2x Silver Medal (S25, S32)
1x Top Forward (S28)

Voting Results:
(1st place votes-2nd place votes, etc.)
2-1-1-1-1
Received 45.0 % of Possible Votes.

Zallerras Szlerchek is unquestionably one of the first legends of the IIHF tournament. Although he played in 14 tournaments in the S20s and early S30s, his career was relatively short compared to other players of the time, which may explain why previous selections ultimately ignored him.

Szlerchek was a fantastic power forward who formed a feared Czech one-two punch with Pierre-Luc Laflamme. Along with his Czech teammate Ondej Ravcjitikov (20 points in S23), Szlerchek (18 points in S28) held the record for most points in a single tournament for more than 20 years.

With 140 games played, Szlerchek becomes the forward with the fewest games played in the Hall of Fame. While many believe that his aggressive and physical play, drive, and rough edge ended his career prematurely, the committee wanted to highlight his production per game, which was one of the best of his era. In fact, among the Hall of Fame inductees of the S20s and S30s decades, he has the second highest points per game production, second only to Chester Cunningham.

Szlerchek has repeatedly said that the biggest disappointment in his career is that he never brought a gold medal back to Czechia and didn't play well enough in the S32 final against Germany. The country has never won the tournament. He is the only player from his country ever to win the Top Forward Award.

Today, Szlerchek becomes the first Czech inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame.

Congratulations @AlwaysGettingHaxed. There will be an invitation to join the committee if you are interested.

Aleister Cain

 Usa  G - S46-S57   Usa
Career Round Robin Stats:
GP: 117| W-L-OT: 77-32-5 | SO: 13| SV%: 0,918| GAA: 2,24

Career Awards:
3x Gold Medal (S50, S51, S53)
1x Silver Medal (S48)
1x Bronze Medal (S52)
1x Top Goalie (S51)

Voting Results:
(1st place votes-2nd place votes, etc.)
2-2-0-0-1
Received 43,8 % of Possible Votes.

The latest and final inductee is Aleister Cain. He becomes only the third goalkeeper to receive this prestigious honour.

Cain is the Committee's first American inductee and embodies the American dominance of the 1950s.
In just 12 seasons, between S46 and S57, he won 5 medals - 3 of them gold - and was once awarded Top Goalie. His statistics speak for themselves: a 77-32-5 record, a 2.24 GAA and a 0.918% save percentage. His 13 shutouts (in only 117 games) remain an IIHF record. He is ranked 4th in tournament history for wins.
Many experts also recognize the part Cain played in shaping the new American generation, in particular the young defensive brigade, and as a mentor to young Strom Chamberlain. Last year he came within a few votes of being elected to the Hall of Fame. This year, the Committee has recognized Aleister Cain's great value in the history of the IIHF and wishes to invite him to join the Hall of Fame.

Congratulations @SlashACM, you are invited to join the Committee if you are interested.
