Holiday PT - Seasons Greetings!

Brock Emmerton has always had a unique holiday celebration. Every year around this time, his parents and older brother would gather with various other relatives, for a large dinner. The dinner would typically consist of steak (all of them cooked medium, except Brock's older brother Randy, who likes his well-done. Their father always cooks Randy's steak extra long and serves him what resembles a chunk of ash, but Randy still eats it), turkey, ham, an assortment of vegetables, potatoes, and pineapple pork. Drinks typically consist of whey powder shakes and/or cognac, depending on one's preference. After dinner, they all partake in the consumption of a large gingerbread house. There are no gifts in Brock's family tradition. Instead, each attendee will speak their mind about every other attendee, whether it be good or bad. As a result, everyone in the Emmerton family has a strong resolve. Each guest will then rate the overall worst attendee of the year (based on overall criticism), and as a punishment they must do a shot of raw egg with a pinch of nutmeg (to maintain the holiday spirit). The slate is then cleared and everyone is set for the new year.

The Emmerton family would consider this Winter holiday one of the more mild family gatherings of the year.

Kalevi Karhunen is luckier than most Finns in that his family actually lives in the United States. That means, on most holidays, they're able to get together as a family and eat a traditional Finnish Christmas meal no matter where they are. This year, due to the recent draft and Kalevi's far flung location of Anchorage, his family is flying out to him to enjoy an extra wintery Christmas in Alaska. Kalevi is on the hook for the tree and house, but like usual its going to be on his mom to do the cooking. Happy Holidays to all!

Johnny Sins Holidays

I generally spend my holiday seasons fist fighting homeless people in my neighborhood, but this year marks the start of a new Christmas tradition. My agent, Brandi Love, and I will be getting blackout drunk at an orphanage on Christmas morning while giving out packs of Sago's and mickeys of Wisers to the children in honor of ol' Saint Nic. We will set up an octagon in the middle of the living room to organize a mixed martial arts event to figure out who is the strongest child. The winner of the Christmas Orphanage Classic will win the championship belt as well as the opportunity to be adopted. Donations are encouraged however, 0% of the proceeds will be given to the children or the orphanage.  Instead the money will be reinvested into next years event to help improve the overall quality.

While he is not against celebrating the holidays, Backdoor Barnacle exhibits a relative indifference toward the season.  Most years he would be in the thick of another season, but with the transition to the SMJHL, the off-season continues as usual.  Once can expect this will mean a few hours each of on-ice and off-ice training followed by a large meal in the evening and a whirlwind of drinking excessively and taming strange on the town at night.  It is possible that timing of the SMJHL and SHL seasons could ultimately result in a change of holiday habits, though based on recent days that does not appear to be on the horizon in the near term.

Dickens enjoys the traditional Western Christmas experience. He wakes up early to spend time with his extended family at the local Applebees. They wine and dines eachother, indulging in Applebees gourmet options, like 2 for $20 Bourbon Street Steak combos, while they bask in the radiance the local eatery provides. His Mother is particularly fond of the 3 Course Meal for $11.99, while Uncle Roger is noutorious for going with All You can Eat Riblets for $21.99. Grandpa Bruce always begins the meal with a simple toast to the family and good health ahead, before indulging in the always juicy Whisky Bacon Burger. The perfect Christmas.

Troy Reynolds spends the holidays the same way he spends most regular days. Drunk. If Troy Reynolds isn't 3 glasses of wine down on Christmas Day, then he's probably doing keg stands in some Manitowoc suburb. Or he may be having a nice police escort home after having a few too many down at the bar and stripping his clothes off. His father banned Christmas trees from the home due to Troy getting so hammered, he tried to climb it and ended up falling and landing ass first on Christmas presents. But don't worry, Troy will pouring out one shot for Santa, one shot for Christmas, twelve shots for Hanukkah and another 5 shots because why not?

My player (James Truong) usually heads back home for the holidays. He spends time with his family and enjoys a Christmas dinner with them on Christmas day. He also organizes social gatherings for his close friends from his childhood. Activities include playing mini golf, escape rooms, drinking bubble tea and eating out at restaurants. James enjoys this chance to unwind and take his mind off of hockey during the holidays. James is an avid gamer as well, so he browses Amazon and Steam for deals during the holiday to get the latest video games to add to his collection. The holidays for James provide a chance for him to relax and get away from the intense game of hockey.

The holiday break is now underway and both SMJHL and SHL teams have seen their training camps come to a close before the break. We were lucky to get a chance to ask St Louis Scarecrows rookie Michael Fox about his plans for the holiday break.

"Well we've got a short time before the preseason so it's not too long of a break, but I plan on heading home for the next week and spending some quality time with my family and fiancé. I haven't really had a chance to fully celebrate with them about getting drafted yet so we've got a small party planned for when I'm home too, kind of doing having a draft celebration/Christmas party in the same night. I'm not taking a full break though, I've got some sticks at home and a few of the neighbor kids heard about me getting drafted so we're probably gonna have a street hockey game on Christmas with some of the kids around the neighborhood."

We here at the Scarecrows media team wish all the SMJHL and SHL teams and players a happy holiday break.

Thornton Opperman, fresh off his 9th round selection in the SMJHL draft, will be spending time in his hometown of Milwaukee, WI over the holiday break. Besides finding some time to fish with the boys on the Lake, Thornton plans on taking time to train with the Admirals at the rink at nearby MSOE. He'll also play some street hockey with his cousins. Thornton is one of those players who loves to play the game, even during his "breaks". He does hope to get his fill of fried cheese curds and giant pretzels before leaving for Anaheim after the holidays.

Basil Magnicotta heads home to Switzerland for the holidays, spending time with family during the off-season after the Crows held their training camp. Like some other professional athletes, a quiet holiday away from the rink is needed for a mental break. "It's really important to have these times where you can put up your skates and have some time to focus on life outside of hockey. That way, when the time comes to resume your duties as a professional athlete, you can have a clear and rested head, and focus on what needs to be done inside the rink." Magnicotta also mentioned his dietary habits during the holidays: "It's a good thing my folks grew up with athletes for children" Magnicotta laughs, "My dad had to learn to make a lot of food that was packed with nutrients without tasting awful. Instead of a turkey, he makes a giant chicken parm. It's a hockey family thing, as most of my teammates and colleagues in the league would know".

Obviously, Raino Kyllönen can't go home for the holidays, as unfortunate as that is. This holiday season, Raino won't have his usual Kinkku, nor will there be any Lanttulaatikko, and more likely than not, Kyllönen won't be washing any of those festive favourites down with Glögi. Despite that all however, Raino will be spending the holiday season with one type of family - his girlfriend's. A local girl from Detroit, Raino met her soon after moving to the city and whilst it won't remind him of home, it'll serve as a lovely indicator of what life can be like for Kyllönen in Detroit as he eases into his first season in the SMJHL. Furthermore, the holiday period will also be seen by Raino as a humble reminder of the sacrifices he must make if he wishes to chase his dreams and become a star hockey player in the SHL. He'll have to substitute a Christmas ham for a Christmas turkey this year, and hopefully for several years after that - but at the end of the day, to Raino? That doesn't really matter too much.

Michael Scarn is celebrating the holidays alone in Colorado. Sure, he has his robot butler along with him, but he is quite boring company. Agent Scarn misses his wife Catherine Zeta-Scarn dearly, but she is dead because of Goldenface's nefarious actions. Scarn reminisces over the good times he had with the fine lady. Every day he is tormented by this loss and he yearns to get revenge on Goldenface. Now in Colorado, Scarn has met a new lady named Holly Flax who works in HR. Scarn has taken some time to get used to the altitude here, so he spent this extra time on holiday on the tops of the roofs of big buildings so he can get used to it. This way, Scarn will be at his best on the ice.

For the holiday break we were able to catch Liam Hutchinson before he left the Knights  locker room to ask him what he has planned for the holidays.

"Every year I make the trip home to see my parents. That usually involves every form of transportation. Thankfully playing in Kelowna gives me the luxury of a short plane ride, or a drive and then ferry to my parents house.

Once in my hometown all my close friends have a get together before Christmas, then we spend time with each of our familys. My family isn't to big so we always have a family/friends dinner at my parents with turkey on Christmas day. We don't do anything to special, or big. It is just nice seeing everyone for a bit before everyone head back to their life."

With Perry stuck out in Halifax with the odd scheduling, he misses his family and their rituals. Every morning they'd get together and the bacon butties would be flowing all round, with the presents being an opened while everyone consumes an imperial fuck tonne of tea. Come 3pm, dinner would be ready and the needlessly large table at his grandparent's house would be filled for only the second time in a whole year. As the night went on and everyone got progressively more drunk, some poor sod would get up and sort a mini buffet for everyone to feast off if they got hungry.

Perry has sent back some Halifax merch to his family as a reminder of his sacrifice by moving out to pursue his career.

Eric is not a huge fan of Christmas. His family always buys things for each other all year round so just doing it for one day always seemed silly to him. He spends his time around Christmas volunteering to help needy children by reading to them or otherwise buying them gifts when he can. He loves his mother's cooking, especially her ham. No one can beat mom's ham and her macaroni salad. After dinner with the family, time is spent either watching the Yule log on TV or just hanging out playing games as a family. Especially with Eric now in Colorado, he really enjoys spending as much time with his family as he can before he has to head back West.
