PGS S45 Game 3: HAL v COL
#16
(This post was last modified: 01-24-2019, 01:36 PM by Kalakar.)

1. There was a lot of stoppage of plays tonight, and it shows. Eighty-eight faceoffs occured, and Halifax won fifty-six of them. Among the eight centermen, Halifax's Kristoffer Matsson had a slight edge over Mr. Faceoffs, with nine faceoff wins out of thirteen attempts. Mr. Faceoffs was the best first line center tonight, staying true to his name with a 0.65% faceoff win to Colorado's Zidek's 0.47%. The worst result on the dot tonight was from Colorado's second line center Michael Scarn with seven faceoffs won in eighteen attempts for 0.39%. As it is the first game for both these teams in the SMJHL, we believe these young centermen will only grow and get better throughout the season.

2.  Both goalies were busy tonight, but Colorado's Yuri Ushakov even more so, stopping thirty-four shots in thirty-eight attempts tonight. Halifax came into the game strong with seventeen shots in the first period, but showed no results. However, it took them five minutes into the second period to show signs of life. Three Raiders scored their first goals, but that didn't stop the Raptors from coming back into the game to take it into shootout. Two goals on two attempts declared them winner for their first game in the SMJHL. Both rookie goaltenders showed poise tonight and we truly believe both of them will become top goaltenders in the near future.

3. This game was filled with high scoring chances but also big hits. Notably Halifax's Perry Morgan, known for his dubious plays that often lead him to the penalty box, had six hits tonight. Thirty-two hits were made by the Raiders from various players, from forwards to defensemen. On the flipside, Colorado was more reserved, with a low nineteen hits to Raiders players. Halifax should probably have tried to block more shots to help their goaltender Mike McKorsy win the game, blocking only eight shots during the game. The Raptors defenders on the other end truly helped their starter by blocking twelve shots coming from Halifax.

A very interesting first match up for both teams in the season. The tilted both ways throughout the entire game. Both sides racking up goals. When breaking it down, the Raiders came hard in everything execpt the third. They had outshot or matched the Rap's in every period. Not a good look for the defense of the Raptors, but ultimately, Yuri Ushakov came in clutch, and battled the entire game, even if his defense was letting him down. Overall the teams played a fast game with little stoppages and it showed in the final score, with energy coming all the way until the shootout, where ultimately Ushakov bailed out the Raptors. Look forward to the Raiders righting the ship quickly. It was an unlucky win at that and did not seem that this was the Raiders being outplayed.

The Insignificantly Significant Player Of The Game.
A ridiculous Wawazat award .. Awarded to the player with less than 7 minutes of ice time that actually registered something positive.
For this the Eighth edition of this trivial achievement..
We've reached back to Game #3 of the 45th season and selected .
Colorado Raptors 4th Line Left Wing Nick Novak.
Novak took his 9:49 of premium ice time and used it to score his 1st goal of the young S45. At the 13:07 mark of the first period his goal gave Colorado an early 2 goal lead in this first meeting with the Halifax Raiders.
Novak stats for the game 1-0-1 one goal and one point, that goal the result of the 1 and only shot on goal he took and Novak had 1 hit against his Halifax opponents. Let's hear it for Nick Novak of Colorado Raptors the Eighth Winner of the Insig/Sig award for S45.

Comment #1 Three stars of the game
1 - Mikael Choybuk - Mikael had a great game and it showed not only on the ice but also in the statistics. He made 8 shots on goal and scored twice. Both of these goals were game tying goals and the last one forced OT where at the end Hallifax unfortunatelly lost. He played key minutes on both special teams (PK and PP) and got a +/- of +2. The only thing missing was the team W at the end.
2 - Mr. Faceoffs - The name is saying it all. Mr.Faceoffs was the key man at the circle winning 20 out of 31 faceoffs. He assisted twice - to the first and the second goal for Halifax. He also made the opponent fear him with a strong physical game. He recorded 4 hits and played big minutes during the PP and PK and got a +/- of +2.
3 - Alexander Selich - The hero for Colorado. The young and very perspective Selich scored a goal and assisted. He scored the first goal of the 3rd period and gave his team the lead during the most important part of the game, but Halifax managed to tie it up. When it went to shootout there was no doubt that Selich will be the one of those players who will shoot and he did. His shot gave Colorado the big first W of the season.

Comment #2 The battle of a Latvian and an Ex-Latvian
One of the more interesting parts of this game was also the battle between two Latvia born players from who one is still trying to get his first games in the national team while the second one has chosen a different path and changed his nationality to be a part of the Czechoslovakia IIHF team. Dzelme vs Voloshin. The overall winner of this microbattle was Voloshin who not only ended up with the W, but also was a big part of his teams success. Voloshin scored a goal late in the 2nd period to tie the game up at 3:3. He also stepped on the ice in PP and recorded a +/- +1. On the other hand Dzelme didn't have the best game. He ended up with a negative +/- -1. He did win more than half of the faceoffs he took (8/14) but that is a small bonus considering that his team lost the game.

Comment #3 The rise of the Smeb brothers
Halifax showed their lack of judgement or just the opposite - their amazing knowledge of the SHL and SMJHL and drafted 3 of 4 Smeb brothers. As it turns out at least in this game the Smeb brothers came trough, to be more precise - Chico Smeb. Chico assisted twice and got a +/- rating of +2 with only 12 minutes of play. Daniel Smeb played a little less (10 minutes), won 5 out of 12 faceoffs and got one shot on the net. Parker Smeb played the least time on ice and got 2PIMs, shot the puck 2 times and made 2 hits. After the first game it seems that Chico will be the passer, Daniel the faceoff guy and Parker the wannabe goon. Lets see how the season works out for Halifax and the Smeb brothers.
