You could tell this goal was coming after a tired Knights line got trapped by an icing. Armada was able to sustain pressure in the Knights zone starting at 9:44 of the period. The Knights were forced to ice the puck twice, and could not win the draw to advance the puck out of their zone. With numerous shot attempts from Armada Kalevi Karhunen was able to find with his fourth shot attempt to make it 2-1 Armada.

The period looked all but finished when Shouta Aizawa took that hooking penalty. It looked like Armada was going into the intermission with a 2-1 lead. With 1 minute and 18 seconds left in the frame, and a face-off in the Knights zone. Armada Dean Colt III won the face-off, but Knights Karlstrabe Scholz forced a turn over, and dished the puck to Nolan Sawchuk who put a shot past Hank Scorpio to tie the game at 2 heading into first intermission.

After some pressure in the Aramda zone, winger Liam Hutchinson retrieved the puck in the corner, dishing it off to point-man Dick Clapper who passed it to Barry Batsbak for the one timer shot to put it in the back of the net. Both Dick Clapper, and Liam Hutchinson would pick up their 2nd assists of the night off this play.

Shots  Armada 23  Knights 13

Armada
Kenji Yoshimura minor penalty for high sticking at 14:03
After a relatively defensive third period, Armada forward takes a minor high sticking penalty to give the Knights a chance to get a insurance goal.

Comment One:

Glutes Media's Three Stars Of the Game

Note: These stars may be different from those determined by the sim.

First Star: Barry Batsbak (KEL)
The sim had Xena and Dick Clapper as the first and second stars of the game, but I couldn't help but disagree. Barry Batsbak was far and away the first star of the game -- coming off a 0 point first game, the rookie was able to bounce back and make a big impact with a goal and an assist in his second ever SMJHL game, all while playing center on the third line with no powerplay time. To top that off, Barry's 0.647 faceoff percentage (11/17) is unbelievable for a rookie and that's why he is the clear pick for first star.

Second Star: Xena (ANC)
The SMJHL veteran was able to put up great stats for her second game of the season, but performances like this are almost to be expected from the Armada's star center, which is why she was narrowly bested by Batsbak for first star of the game. Xena had an all-star performance this game, scoring 1 goal and 1 point and taking full advantage of her first line minutes. Like Batsbak, Xena also recorded a 0.647 faceoff percentage (11/17), making the race for first star neck and neck if it weren't for the fact that Batsbak is a rookie. Regardless, Xena definitely impressed and is fitting well into her star role on the Armada for her third season in the J.

Third Star: Dick Clapper (KEL)
The third line of the Knights was on fire tonight, and Dick Clapper was a big reason why. The shoot-first rookie winger recorded two primary assists tonight, showing that his playmaking abilities aren't too shabby either. After coming off a pointless first game of the season, the rookie came into this game with something to prove, and it showed in his game. Clapper also registered a monster hit on Mike Mayfield in the first period after the Knights gave up an early goal, swinging the momentum of the game back towards the Knights for the eventual equalizer in the first.

Comment Two:
Episode Two: Attack of the Knights
After a disappointing loss to the Armada in the first game of the season, the Knights bounce back and take game two in this five game head-to-head streak against Anchorage. Despite conceding an early goal and getting outshot 28 to 18, Kelowna was able to barely edge their way to victory thanks to two consecutive goals late in the second period. The Knights relied on their superior depth scoring and neutralizing the stars of the Armada to bring this win home. Though they managed to take the W, the Knights will need to work on their weak shooting in their games going forward, as it may come to bite them in the future.

Comment Three:
Goalie of the Game: Vivian Leblanc (KEL)
This pick is a no-brainer. Leblanc averaged a 0.893 save percentage, letting in 3 goals on 28 shots. The Knights left Leblanc out to dry in the first period, and no one can blame her for letting in 2 goals out of 15 (FIFTEEN!) shots in the first. However, it wasn't all because of the Kelowna defense, as Vivian allowed 5 rebounds herself just in the first period. Her game leveled out in the later periods, and this stability rallied the Knights to a hard-fought 4-3 victory. Rebound control will definitely be a skill in need of improvement for Leblanc in the future, but she is not looking too shaky for her second game back after a long offseason.

COMMENT ONE: Shorthanded Goal Rallies The Troops

-While he didn't get a star for his performance, Nolan Sawchuk (a name dusted in grit if I've ever heard one), scored a very critical short-handed goal for Kelowna in the first period, being set up by Karlstrabe Scholz after a boneheaded turnover on a breakout pass by Eero Niemi. The veteran Sawchuk has one of the best shots on the Knights roster, and made it count by beating Hank Scorpio blocker-side with a quality wrist shot. The goal tied it 2-2, and gave the Knights momentum going into the locker room for the second period, which they managed to transfer over to a win after a first 20 minutes that could've been disastrous......

COMMENT TWO: Will The Defense Be Enough?

-Kelowna got a much-needed win after dropping the season opener away to Anchorage, but questions still remain over the team's ability to contend for a playoff spot. The defense is spotty in terms of overall talent with two veterans, and they lack the 4th pairing filler that can munch minutes in even strength and save the best players for the special teams. The Kelowna defenders skillset is also more inclined to move the puck and shoot, rather than rally back and play their position. Veteran Vivian Leblanc is a solid goalie at the J level and will need to prove her mettle this year to keep the Knights in contention. Kelowna fans will no doubt be hoping that Guy Zheng and Karlstrabe Scholz keep developing....

Knights Bounce Back
After suffering a 5-2 defeat to the Anchorage Armada the previous night, where they were outshot 41-18, the Kelowna Knights bounce back to even the season series at 1-1. They were still outshot 28-18 and arguably outplayed for the majority of the game. They will have to start putting more pucks to the net if they want to get out of their season series against Anchorage ahead. This home ice win is huge for the Knights as their next three games are against the Anchorage Armada, with two of them being on home ice. They've shown thus far they can keep up with Anchorage, but will they be able to show that they can dominate the same way?

Three Stars
Xena (ANC)  1g 1a +2 15:52
Xena helped get the Armada the lead twice, with an assist on their opening goal and scoring their third goal. Xena had stellar production without any PP ice time and had nearly 2 minutes of PK time.
Dick Clapper (KEL) 0g 2a +2 16:06
Dick Clapper helped start and finish the goal scoring for the Knights tonight, with an assist on both their opening goal and the game winner. He also was part of the stellar Knight's special teams with almost 2 minutes on the PP and over a minute on the PK.
Barry Batsbak (KEL) 1g 1a +2 13:03
Barry also helped start the goal scoring and put a winning cap on it, with an assist on the Knight's opening goal and scoring the game winner himself. On a night where the Knight's special teams may have stolen the show, he did this all at even strength and with only 13 minutes of ice time.

Special Teams Make the Difference
The huge swing in this game was provided by the Knights special teams scoring at opportune moments. In the final 10 seconds of the first period, the Knights scored shorthanded to tie the game at 2-2. Goals in the last minute are hard to bounce back from, especially when they're shorthanded goals. The powerplay scored just 16 seconds into a 2nd period powerplay to again tie the game back up at 3-3 this time. These goals prevented Anchorage from ever establishing a lead for more than a few minutes, and kept breathing life into the Knights. When all was said and done, the Knights were 1 for 3 on the powerplay and 4 for 4 on the penalty kill, with a +2 goal differential across both of them.

The Champ and Goat of the Game:
Champ: Barry Batsbak was a 7th round pick in the S45 SMJHL draft, overlooked by every single team to get to the Knights. However he took his game to a whole other level in his second ever SMJHL game, scoring his first goal and assist while only playing 13 minutes of ice time. To top it all off he was 11 for 17 on the dot (64.7%) and demonstrated why you can't always rely on the scouts to pick the right players early in the draft.

Goat: Goaltending for both teams was about as bad as it can get, with Hank Scorpio and Vivian Leblanc just providing putrid performances. Scorpio stopped 14 of 18 shots for a save percentage of .778, while Leblanc stopped 25 of 28 shots for a save percentage of .893. That is not the kind of goaltending that wins you hockey games.

Interesting Facts of the Game:
This 4-3 game featured 12 total players registering a point on the scoresheet, with all the goals being scored by a different player. Of those 12 players only three of them played over 20 minutes a night, with the majority of them playing fewer than 18 minutes. 4 of the 7 players  Also the only players to register two points were those who played fewer than 20 minutes a night, leading to one of those weird games where some times playing a ton of minutes is actually more counter-productive. But that could just be the SMJHL for you, and this may be something that is mitigated in the SHL when these guys come up to the big leagues.

Goal of the Game:
Surprisingly enough the goal of the game for this one happened within the first 10 seconds of the game starting.  Xena won the faceoff and sent the puck to Oliver Kovacs who made a nifty move into the Kelowna Knights zone to get a breakaway chance. Vivian Leblanc attempted a desperation move to block the puck with his head down, but Kovacs saw it coming and flipped the puck over his head, then tapped it into the net while it was still airborne. That is a contender for goal of the year at this point.

Team Stats Breakdown

The Armada's powerplay really let them down in this game, as they failed to convert on all four of their man advantage chances, as well as allowing the Knights to tie the game up with a short-handed goal just ten seconds before the end of the first period. Anchorage's penalty kill didn't fare much better, as they allowed the Knights to score on 2/3 of their chances. In a game that ended so close score-wise, the special teams falling down on the job just isn't acceptable. This is especially the case with the Armada outshooting the Knights 28-18 and winning 46 faceoffs to the Knights' 34. If Anchorage had capitalized on their puck possession and their shots on goal, we would have seen a very different result of this game, and so I think we all know what the team will be spending time on in practices to come.

Story of the Game

It's early in the season yet, and with such a huge draft class of rookies coming into the SMJHL, we have no idea how things will look come playoff time. Still, though, we can draw some conclusions about how so many team slots going to rookies is affecting the league this early on. Thus, the Kelowna Knights may have won game 7 against Anchorage, but the real story comes in the third period, when the Armada got 5 shots on the goal to the Knights' 3 and neither team scored. This is a significant difference from the beginning of the game, especially in the Armada's case (they had 15 shots in the first period). Why? Perhaps both teams are getting increasingly tired as the game goes on, and their play is shifting to match. The compete level come playoffs will no doubt depend on which teams' players have adjusted to the grind of the SMJHL season.

Rookie Rave

While this game was a disappointment for the Armada in the end, it did include a happy moment for some of their rookies - defencemen Johnny Sins and Kalevi Karhunen. The two are the team's second defence pair, and Sins notched his very first SMJHL assist at 13:44 of the first period. Receiving the puck from top-line winger Eero Niemi (who also scored his first assist of the season on the play), Sins passed it up to Karhunen, who slipped it past Knights' goalie Vivian Leblanc glove-side for his very first goal in his professional career. It was no doubt a moment to remember for the two young defencemen.

Game 7 Simweek 1 Anchorage Armada vs Kelowna Knights

In the dratted Game 7 of the SMJHL Season 45 the Goalie Matchup in Kelwona was Hank Scorpio vs. Vivian Leblanc. In this 4-3 Kelowna Win Vivian Leblanc showed the better performance. But with a Sv% from 0,893 there will be much in this game to learn from. But after she lost her first game she was very happy to get her first win under her belt in her second start. Hank Scorpio hat a very bad day. He won his first game of the season but now in Kelowna 14 Saves of 18 Shots are not excuseable.

Anchorage came into the game swinging, immediately winning a face-off and scoring their first goal on their first shot 8 seconds into the period. They didn't let off the gas after scoring, however, and continued to pepper LeBlanc with shots, without getting any through. Kelowna tied it up roughly half way through the first but Anchorage retook the lead 6 minutes later. First period scoring wasn't over quite yet as Sawchuk tied it up once again with 10 seconds remaining. The second period continued to be back and forth as Armada scored to take the lead for the third time this game off a deflection by Xena 8 minutes in, and the Knights tied it up for the third time 5 minutes later from Konstantin. Barry Batsbak scored the game winner for Kelowna no more than 3 minutes after that and with a scoreless third, the final score was 4-3 Kelowna.

The turning point of the game to some may have been the game winner scored by Barry Batsbak at 15:02 of the second period but I believe it to be the 3-3 game tying goal scored just minutes earlier by Kelowna. Kelowna the whole game was trailing and once they managed to tie it up, Anchorage kept delivering pressure to re-gain the lead. After the 3-3 goal by Konstantin the momentum of the game shifted in Kelowna's favour with the other team icining the puck a few teams, forcing guys that are tired to stay on the ice. The Knights continued to win key face-offs, including the face-off in the offensive zone which immediately led to the game winner.

First Star: Xena (ANC)
Xena was an absolute monster for Anchorage tonight. He didn't play the most tonight, finishing at just under 16 minutes. But he definitely made the most of his playing time with 1 goal and 1 assist on 2 shots. In addition to this, he played a strong face-off game tonight, finishing with a record of 11/17: roughly 65%.

Second Star: Yours Truly, Dick Clapper (KEL)
Clapper played a healthy 16 minutes on the third line in his first ever SMJHL game, with 2 of those minutes being on the power play. Despite it being his first game he still managed to find success with 2 assists, both being primary, on the Knights' first and last goals of the game. As his play grows over the season we hope to see him move up in the lineup.

Third Star: Barry Batsbak (KEL)
It is a little surprising to see Batsbak as only the third star of the game, especially when looking at his stats in the game. He finished with just over 13 minutes played with the game winning goal and a secondary assist on the first of the Knight's goals. In addition to his points he finished at 64.7% in the face-off circle, or in other words 11/17. Matching Xena's stats it would be no shock to see him as the first star as he managed to get the win for his club.

Comment 1:

In this game, we can look at the big hits laid off by Armada's forward, Ashburn McAllister. He led the game for hits with a total of 4. An indepth analysis of these hits demonstrates that the fourth line player targets were Nickolas Klaus, Sanyi Kocksis, Justin Siddals and Big Fudge. All of the hits were recorded within the first 5 minutes of the first period. We can see the player set the tone for the rest of his teamates but he couldn't grab any other opportunity to record another hit after this as he was limited in play time.

Comment 2:

Dick Clapper had a big game in the Knights defeat claiming the second star of the game. He ended the night with 2 assists. The first assist came from a faceoff win in Kelown'as zone from Barry Bastbak. he then passed the puck to Dick Clapper who himself passed to Scott Niedermayer Junior in the neutral zone. Nidermayer entered Alask's zone and took a shot. He scored and Clapper registered his first pass of the game. The second pass came up from a 5 pass play between Clapper, Niedermayer Jr, Batsbak and Liam Hutchinson before Batsbak finally took a shot. This incredible play demonstrates Clapper's natural talent as a passer spoting big opportunities.

Comment 3:

Why Anchorage couldn't win the game despite having the advantage on total shots taken? They indeed outshot Kelowna 28 to 18 but lost by a goal. Goalie Vivian Leblanc had a huge game but on the opposite side Hank Scorpio only managed 14 saves out of 18 shots. The save percentage of 0.778 isn't enough to win a game against the Kelowna Knights. Scorpio let in 1 powerplay goal, 1 shorthanded goal and 2 even strenght goals. His defense tried their best to help him by blocking 11 shots but the goalie just couldn't get it done. He can hopefully bounce back as the season has just begun, especially since the defense seems to be doing their part.

Interview with max branagan GM for the Armada

So Max, first loss of the season. How does that feel?

Everyone loses, losing is part of the game. Dwelling on a loss is productive to no one so it comes down to how well you respond to it. Our goal as a management team is to ensure that losses are one offs and don't develop into streaks.

You out shot the Knights 28-18, yet lost by a late goal, any thoughts on what happened there?

There are positives to take away for sure. It is probably more frustrating to lose a game you dominated but at least you know your systems are working and maybe it just came down to a hot goalie or not placing our shots properly. No need to bag skate this week.

How is the team going to respond going forward?

We have shown the league that we can keep it tight in our own end while also maintaining possession at the right end of the ice. I feel like we will be winning the majority of the games we play if we keep this up and the table will show that at the end of the season.

Cheers to @Acsolap

2nd Comment

It has become the facts for the early games that dominating the game is not enough to win games in this league. The other version of this take is that Goalies are showing their worth early on by holding it down when their defense lets up on the gas at anypoint in the game. Anchorage out shot the Knights 28 to 18, and yet Kelowna ended up with the win. Penalties were relatively low for both teams, but as the game went on, it slowed down, with no goals being scored with great performances from Leblanc and Scorpio. Leblanc really stood out as his defense was the one that was slower to start and yet he held on to the lead with a fiery passion.

Turning point(s)

I can see other commentators takes on the relative strength of the two goalies. And to be honest you can only look at the first half and wonder if Hank was the difference between the two team, Anchorage dominate possession, territory, and shots on goal yet ended the half drawn with knights 2-2. How if you are looking for the moment that the game turned on Anchorage, look no further than the 6th, game tying goal that happened on a power play as Johnny sins lost his head. During that period knights won crucial face-offs and put pressure on Hank that he couldn't withstand with a shorthanded team. Once that goal was scored the 7th and desicive goal felt enevidble. Although the Knights team should also be congratulated on successfully shutting down the Armada offense in the 3rd, and they never looked like coming back after losing the lead.
