PGS S45 Game 43: St.Louis vs Lethbridge
#1

Game #43 St.Louis vs Lethbridge Lions (3-5)
Main Story: "Lions ends 5 game losing streak"

St.Louis. Lethbridge Lions ended a 5 game losing streak with a 5-3 victory against the struggling St.Louis Scarecrows.

Lions won just their 2nd game this season (record 2-7-0), while the reigning 4-star champion St.Louis Scarecrows extended their losing streak to 3.

Jordan Joestar (2 goals, 1 assist) and Monkey D. Lully (3 assists) both had a 3 point evening. Nicolas Fleming scored 2 goals for the Scarecrows.

First period
Both teams started with a rookie goalie on net. Junebug Langdon-Wray for the Lions and Billy Sorokin for the Scarecrows. And coincidentally both goalies also started their first game of the season.
Lions started shaky with a hooking penalty for Sami Karppa just 5 seconds into the game. Nicolas Fleming opened the scoring early in the first period on St.Louis 2nd powerplay attempt. The Lions came to life late in the first period with 2 goals in a 22 seconds span. Rahotep Tutankhamu succesfully deflected a shot by Cant Eykhil at 18:40. At 19.02 Eva Lykke Aparjode easily tipped in a pass from Dinars Briedis.

Second period
Similar to the first period, St.Louis came out the lockerroom strong again with Nicolas Fleming scoring his second powerplay of the game (2-2) at 3.09. Lions team-leading scorer Arsene Arsenich broke the tie with 9 minutes remaining, with his 5th goal of the season. Rookie Jordan Joestar put the Lions on a 4-2 lead with his first career goal. Billy Sorokin (9 saves on 13 shots) looked not comfortable in the net and got replaced by Scarecrows star-goalie Aleister Cain.

Third period
St.Louis looked like they gave up the game, shooting just 5 shots on the net. Jordan Joestar celebrated his second goal of the game at 9.25. Michael Fox scored with 1.13 remaning for the final 3-5 score.  Junebug Langdon-Wray ended the game with 17 saves on 20 shots. Aleister Cain gave up 1 goal on 9 shots.

Three stars
1 - Jordan Joestar (LBL)
2 - Eva Lykke Aparjode (LBL)
3 - Monkey D. Luffy (LBL)

Notes:
- It was the second game between Lethbridge Lions and St.Louis Scarecrows this season. St.Louis won the first in Lethbridge, 1-3
- Lethbridge Lions scored 5 goals, their highest amount in 9 games. They previously scored 3 goals against the Montreal Militia, Halifax Raiders and Anaheim Outlaws.

Comment One:

Glutes Media's Three Stars Of the Game

Note: These stars may be different from those determined by the sim.

First Star: Jordan Joestar (LBL)
The first star is without a doubt Jordan Joestar. The shoot-first rookie winger was on fire tonight, and registered 2 goals and 1 assist for a total of 3 points. Without a doubt, an outstanding rookie performance.

Second Star: Nicolas Fleming (STL)
The SMJHL sophomore came close to a hat trick tonight, scoring 2 goals on 6 shots. The Scarecrows' star winger did the best he could to put the team on his back, but the bounces were just not going Fleming's way.

Third Star: Monkey D. Luffy (LBL)
Another rookie makes the list, this time as third star of the game. The rookie centerman is an unexpectedly good playmaker and passer, and registered three key assists this game to help the Lions break their 5 game losing streak.

Comment Two:
Fall of the Champions?
The Scarecrows are the reigning Four Star Cup champions and were the clear favourites going into this game against the then-bottom place Lethbridge Lions. This begs the question: what went wrong? Perhaps this was a case of underestimating the opponent, as St. Louis started one of their two rookie goalies, Billie Sorokin. Sorokin was chased halfway through the game, and veteran Aleister Cain was brought in to stop the bleeding. Maybe the Lions just had the game of their lives, and rallied the troops in this David versus Goliath-esque matchup. Whatever the case, St. Louis will need to tighten up on these seemingly easy games if they hope to have any sense of consistency that will take them far in the playoffs.

Comment Three:
Goalie of the Game: Junebug Langdon-Wray (LBL)
This is an easy pick for goalie of the game, as the original starting goalie of the Scarecrows was chased just over halfway through the game. Langdon-Wray is a rookie who came into this game with no expectations, and managed to go toe to toe with the Scarecrows' shooting prowess. Perhaps this was a fluke, but Junebug looked lethal tonight, only giving up 5 rebounds and makes a strong case for the starting job at Lethbridge. Let's hope Langdon-Wray is able to carry this momentum forward and give the Lions what they need to climb up the standings.

In dept analysis of rookie Gordie Boomhover
Rookie Gordie Boomhover ended the game with 1 point on an assist late in the third period at 18:47 on a Michael Fox goal, a wrister in the top left corner of goalie Junebug Langdon-Wray from the Lethbridge Lions. Gordie Boomhover had some solid minutes of ice time, a total of 13:01 minutes from which 2:41 were on the power play. You can see at everything that this rookie is a good fit for the St. Louis Scarecrows. Together with Alekski Leskinen and Michael Fox he forms the third line on a Scarecrows team that is still trying to find their way in the early games of the season. Expectations were quite high at the start of the season, but so far the team has failed to impress. Though rookie Gordie Boomhover is a sign that things are bright for the Scarecrows future and seasons to come. He is agressive on the ice and even though you see he is making some small mistake, he is making up for it in effort. He gives everything he got every game he plays. It's a matter of time before we can see Gordie shine in the SHL.

Post-game interview with first star Jordan Joestar
Hi Jordan, what a game? You scored two goals and got one assist. You must feel amazing?
Thanks Jack. Yeah, I do. Not because I scored two goals, but that we won. We desperately needed the two points in this game and we got them. Whoever scores the goals doesn't matter. Though I'm glad it was me, haha.

Take us through your first goal?
Lately we've been having some troubles on the power play, but I felt every second of this power play that we were going to convert. We had so much energy. Eventually I got the puck from Eva Lykke and I already knew where I was going to put it. In the back of the net.

You have the day off tomorrow, any plans?
Actually, I think I will do a skate tomorrow morning. I feel a little bit sore. Just a precaution, it's nothing serious.

Comment 3

Is St. Louis having a goalie crisis?
14:23 into the second period, goalie Billy Sorokin was pulled for Aleister Cain after the power play goal from Jordan Joester. Billy Sorokin faced 13 shots and allowed 4 goals in total in 34:23 minutes of ice time. Scarecrows defense left Billy Sorokin out to dry in those minutes, but I felt that Billy Sorokin was not focussed enough. He let in some pretty weak goals, that a fully healthy and fit Sorokin would have stopped for sure. We tried to get an interview with Billy Sorokin, but we were not allowed. The Scarecrows are protecting their goalie and I can't really blame them. As reigning champions there is a lot of pressure on the Scarecrows and so far they have not been able to perform under that pressure.

Welcome to another round of Arbys™ Three Stars, this time between the defending Four Star Cup Champions St. Louis Scarecrows, and expansion team Lethbridge Lions.

Arbys First Star - Jordon Joestar Lions

The first star of the game goes to Jordon Joestar, the second line right winger for the Albertan team. Joestar really came alive in the second period, first being the primary assist on the Arsenich goal which put the Lions into the lead for the second time of the match, and then scoring his own power play goal just 3 minutes later. He then went on to seal the deal half way through the third period with a second goal, ultimately closing the Scarecrows' fate. A helpful 3 points is the reason for this guy's star.

Arbys Second Star - Eva Lykke Aparjode Lions

The second star for Lethbridge's impressive win goes to the top liner left wing Aparjode. He got his first period off to a late start, scoring with just one minute left in the period, putting his team into the lead as the teams headed back into the locker room. He also assisted on Joestar's goal which put the Lions into the lead for the second time of the match. The winger's antics were almost certainly pivotal in the expansion team beating the defending champions.

Arbys Third Star - Monkey D. Luffy Lions

The third and final star of the Lethbridge win goes to the second line centre Luffy. Like Joestar, Luffy's first period was quiet with very little activity on the ice. He got the second assist on the goal that put Lethbridge into the lead for the second time. He then went onto assist the next two Lethbridge goals which eventually resulted in their win. He was a big player having a lot of ice time and contributed to his team's win, earning him the third star of the game.

The Champ and Goat of the Game:
Champ: Jordan Joestar was a 9th round pick in the S45 SMJHL draft, falling quite a great deal despite a lot of promise and many pundits singing his praises going in. Joestar scored 2 goals and 3 points on the season, and surprisingly those were his first two goals this season.

Goat: St. Louis's depth didn't seem to really show up today, as all but four players finished the game as a minus, something that doesn't happen very often, especially games that are actually fairly close. But it proves that up and down St. Louis was not ready to play this game.

Interesting Facts of the Game:
This 5-3 game was surprisingly split among the rookies and veterans when it came to actual production, with 8 of the 16 scorers being rookies going into the S46 draft. This could possibly be concrete proof of how impactful these young players are, as they are able to handle big minutes with the older players and are producing at just about the same level as they are. It also helps that there are a ton of them in this draft as this game had a ridiculously high number of rookies playing in it. Then again this could just be a matter of an anomaly and this isn't typical of how most games are.

Goal of the Game:
The goal of this game occurred around the 18 minute mark of the first period, which led to a series of great passing plays and an incredible play in front of the net to tie the game up for Lethbridge after conceding the first lead of the game early. It started with Benois Miuscule turning the puck over while breaking out, but then Lethbridge intercepting it back from Tyler Tougard and leading to a fantastic passing play between Minuscule, Tutankhamun, and Cant Eykhil, then leading to Tutankhamun getting the puck again in front and deflecting it in to tie the game.

3 Stars of the Game

1 - Jordan Joestar (LBL) - 2G, 1A, 3P, +2, 0PIM. Joestar was simply on fire this game, it took until half way through the game before he got his first tick on the score sheet, but after that assist things just seemed to start clicking for Jordan all the way through the rest of the game as he helped the Lions break their losing streak.

2 - Eva Lykke Aparjode (LBL) - 1G, 1A, 2P, +1, 0PIM. Eva saw fellow teammate Tutankhamun score and decided she wanted one of her own, scoring 22 seconds later to finish out the 1st which gave her team a big boost heading into the dressing room.

3 - Monkey D. Luffy (LBL) - 0G, 3A, 3P, +2, 2PIM. Mr. Luffy not only was outstanding in the faceoff dot, winning 12 of 23 draws, he also decided tonight was his night to let his teammates have some glory as he dealt some beautiful passes out that ultimatly resulted in a few goals.

TSN Turning Point

The turning point of this game was Jordan Joestar's goal. It seemed like the Scarecrows had a reply for every play and move that the Lions tried, up until Jordan scored his goal to make it 4 to 2. From that point on, the Lions looked like a completely different team that was out for blood and unfortunately it was the Scarecrows blood that they were hungry for. They dominated the game from then on out and didn't look back as they cruised to victory to snap their 5 game losing streak. Jordan along with the rest of his team was able to help put Lethbridge back on the map, and in the win column after this successful game.

Worst Player of the Game

Billy Sorokin (STL), 9 saves from 13 shots - (0.692), 34:23 minutes played. It's likely to pick on the goalie in a loss, but in this game, Sorokin deserves all the criticism that he gets. Allowing 4 goals on 13 shots is simply unacceptable, while some may argue the defense failed around Sorokin and that's what cause this, anyone watching the game saw he simply wasn't on and was far from playing to the max of his abilities. Billy was unavailable for comment after the game as he ran out of the arena shortly after he was pulled. With any luck he'll bounce back and be able to shake this one off.

Scarecrows missing killer instinct

After looking strong for 2 periods, and certainly still being in the game the Scarecrows going into the 3rd period down by 2 goals. The Scarecrows could only muster up 5 shots in the whole frame. No way you are going to win many games with that effort, let alone come back from a 2 goal deficit. The Lions didn't exactly turn on the pressure either, but they managed 8 shots on net. The Lions scored at 9:25 of the 3rd period which took all the wind from the Scarecrows already deflated sails. While the Scarecrows did end up getting a goal late in the game, it was too little too late. The reigning champs will have to figure it out quick before their current slide continues.

Game 43 Simweek 2 St. Louis Scarecrows @ Lethbridge Lions

In this game Goalie Watch had the chance to scout three goalies. This were bad news for St. Louis first time starter Billiy Sorokin who got pulles after 34 Minutes with a Sv% of under 0.700 and only 9 saves on 13 shots. He was replaced by Aleister Can who only gets one goal in the remaining game. Junebug Landon-Wrays performance wasn’t superb, but enough to get his first W of the season. His defence only allowed 20 shots the whole game, so maybe he wasn’t focused enough on the 3 shots he left behind.

C - Monkey D. Luffy (LBL) - comment 1

Monkey was a noticeable factor in tonight's game with three assists earning him the the third star of the game and the win for the Lions. While all of his assists were secondary assists, he was able to move the puck to areas to allow his line mates to convert. In past games, when Luffy entered the offensive zone, the opposing d-men's eyes would light up as they knew they could easily smash the rookie center off the puck. Unfortunately for the Scarecrows, Luffy finally decided he was tired of being a sponge and did not have any turnovers due to hits this game. Luffy played a strong defensive game, winning 52% of his face-offs and never being on the ice for a goal against.

RW - Nicolas Fleming (STL) - comment 2

Nicolas was the most noticeable and best player on the ice for the Scarecrows. He was electric on the power play scoring two goals. On the defensive side, he was only guilty of one goal against this game. Fleming had a game high 6 shots on net which accounts for 30% of the Scarecrows shots the entire game! Fleming logged huge minutes, playing both the PP and PK and was a positive factor for the Scarecrows in killing 4 out of the 5 penalties they had. Unfortunately for Fleming, hockey is a team game and his efforts were not enough to propel a depleted Scarecrows team to victory.

RW - Jordan Joestar (LBL) - comment 3

This was the best game of the season so far for Jordan. He was very opportunistic, scoring on the two shots he had for the game. More known for his play-making ability, he showed us that he is capable of putting the puck in the net when needed. He also had a primary assist on line mate's Arsene Arsenich's goal giving him three points for the night. Joestar was very effective on the penalty kill tonight as both power play goals scored by the Scarecrows is when Joestar was not on the ice. Hopefully this will be the breakout game for Joestar which will help propel the Lions to more victories.

Comment 1:

Rookies Major Impact

A major factor in this game would have to be the rookies skaters, Lethbridge is loaded with them due to them being an expansion team and although the Scarecrows have less both teams rookies had major impacts in this contest. Monkey D Luffy has been a major standout for the Lions all season and this game was no different with the rookie centre setting up three different plays resulting in goals this game while being the second assist on all three goals. Joey Joestar who was named first star sniped 2 goals and added an assist while first line rookie Eva Lykke Aparjode had a goal and an assist. For the Lions rookie Gordie Boomhoover had an assist on his linemate Michael Fox's goal to go along with an assist from rookie defenceman Basil Magnicotta in the first.

Comment 2:

Mediocre goaltending

If you're a fan of good goaltending then this is definitely not the game for you. Junebug Langdon-Wray played the entire game and ended up getting the win but he ended the game with an ugly 0.850 SVP. Rookie goalie Billy Sorokin was starting his second game this season as he looks to steal the backup position away from fellow rookie Lee Marshall and this game will not help him. Billy allowed 4 goals on 13 shots and ended up being pulled for veteran Aleister Cain 6 minutes into the second period. Aleister played a bit better but he did end up allowing a goal in the final two minutes which ultimately ended the Scarecrows comeback bid as they fell 5-3.

Comment 3:

Lack of discipline

Lack of discipline was a big problem for both teams, both teams had 5 penalties each and although this has been a reoccurring problem for the Scarecrows so far this season this is a new problem for the Lethbridge Lions which is surprising given the amount of rookies they're icing. For the Scarecrows, Helmuts Akmenlauks was the main culprit totaling 6 PIM split between a hooking call in the a double minor high stick with both penalties coming in the 2nd period while Brennan Kennedy Jr. had 4 PIM for the Lions between a hooking call in the first and a charging call in the third.

Comment 1:
St Louis Chronicle Game Recap
St Louis's losing streak continued tonight as the Scarecrows dropped their third straight, giving the Lethbridge Lions their second win this season. Rookie netminder Billy Sorokin started for the Scarecrows but was replaced by Aleister Cain in the second period after giving up 4 goals on 13 shots. The Scarecrow's offense didn't do much to help Sorokin get back into the game and the defense left Sorokin out to dry on 2 of the goals Sorokin allowed. The bright side for the Scarecrows from tonight was the special teams play, with the power play going 2 for 5 and the penalty kill stopping 4 of the 5 power play opportunities the Lions had. The coaching staff will have a lot to say about this game before the Crows return to action against the Montreal Militia.

Comment 2:
Special K Special-Teams Player of the Game
Tonight's Special K Special-Teams Player of the Game is one most Scarecrow fans will recognize - Nicolas Fleming. Fleming netted two power play goals in this game, the first two scored for the Scarecrows tonight - one in the first period off of a high sticking minor by Donny McMasters, and the next in the second period off of a Monkey Luffy holding minor. Fleming's two goals tonight were his third and fourth goals on the season, yet they weren't enough to help the Scarecrows stay above .500 on the season, dropping below .500 for the first time since the first game. Either way, the special teams units for the Scarecrows continue to impress and Nicolas Fleming is the offensive leader for the Crow's power play.

Comment 3:
House of Crow Rook of the Game
The House of Crow Rook of the Game is an award given to the St Louis Scarecrow rookie who impressed the most in each night's matchup. The Scarecrows as a whole did not have a good night, but a few players did impress in certain areas of their game. Tonight's rook of the game award goes to Michael Fox for his goal with a little over a minute left in the contest, his second goal of the season. Michael Fox has continued to impress the Scarecrow coaching staff, earning a double shift on the team's third and fourth lines. While Fox hasn't put up the points he was probably expecting heading into the season, his work ethic has been compared to some of the SHL greats and has earned him the trust of the coaching staff. Many junior scouts from the SHL have suggested that Fox's production - and in turn his line's production - should see a steady increase as the season progresses. I imagine this won't be his last "Rook of the Game" award by season's end.

Luffy's Lethbridge Lallstars

1st Star 1st comment
Junebug Langdon-Wray - Our first star for the lions has got to be backup goalie Junebug Langdon-Wray. If their first start of the season they finally steal the show and stop the 5 game skid that the lions were on. The stats seem pretty marginal but making the big saves when it mattered and stopping more pucks than the other goalies were a big factor in this game. A big first win for this rookie goalie and one they won't likely forget for years to come.

2nd Star 2nd comment
Jordan Joestar - Leading the way for the lions is Joestar with 2 huge goals in this game and an assist to add for a total of 3 points. While laboring 19 minutes isn't near the top of play time on his team this guy made his minutes count and it shows on the scoreboard. This guy has been quiet for most of the season but when he wakes up he scores in bunches and the lions are glad to have a big game from him to help snap their skid.

3rd Star
3rd comment
Monkey D. Luffy - THE MAN, THE MYTH, THE LEGEND. Well not really but this rookie has had a tremendous year and again gets on the scoresheet three times tonight. What can I say about this kid that hasn't been said already. He has stats in almost every category and boasts 19 minutes of play. 3 Apples, plus 2, 4 shots, 2 hits, a penalty. This guy looks like he has a bright future and he showed off all he is worth in this game tonight.

The Lookback Show - St Louis Scarecrows vs. Lethbridge Lions

Comment 1 - Junebugs in the Air: Where Did She Go?

Despite a good effort by Junebug Langdon-Wray with 17/20 saved shots (.850 SV%), the rookie goaltender only played 6 more games in Season 45. From Coach/GM Daniel Burd: "We noticed June had begun to stagnate during practices, while Pat had been working incredibly hard for the starter spot. It was a no-brainer most nights on who to choose." Nadeau would go on to start 47 out of the 50 games for the Lions. It is unknown if Junebug will continue her SMJHL career at any point, as she has already made plans to move back to her hometown junior team.

Comment 2 - The Monkey is Out of the Barrel

If there were any bright spots for the Lethbridge Lions this season, it would be the rookie draft steal Monkey D. Luffy. The rookie phenom took a step back from his goalscoring for this game and instead helped out in the assists department: all three of his points from this game were assists. The rookie would continue to impress from an unlikely team, obtaining 15 goals and 16 assists for his rookie season, becoming the team's first captain, and he is the third best rookie of Season 45. It's no wonder why the rookie is planning on moving on to the SHL next season.

Comment 3 - Round 1... FIGHT!

Lethbridge had a very good draft that gave them good pieces to build upon. One of these pieces is 1st rounder Eva Lykke Aparjode. While having a modest rookie campaign, her 1st round class was, to say the least, underwhelming. Only Karlstraße Scholz and Tyler Tougard were able to be in the top 10 rookies for Season 45. Aparjode had a solid night, punching in a goal and an assist, and is looking to be a solid forward for the Lions going forward. With that, it may take a year or two more for the young forward to find footing in the SHL.

Comment 7

Defensive consistency and the never quit attitude, as well as a the St. Louis goalie being chased pushes the Lions to the win. The ice did not feel tilted due to the shots being so close with the lions taking the 22-20 lead in goals. The penalties did not seem to the stir the teams up as much as one might expect being up a man might be. This game was a defensive showcase through and through, and St Louis did not have the stuff in this match up. With the Lions being able to put up doubles in back to back periods, ultimately decided the game before the third was finished.

Comment 1
Lethbridge pours it on offensively.
A big 5 goal outburst from the Lethbridge Lions today, not bad for the worst team in the league. Jordan Joestar contributed with a big 2 goal game, both goals coming late in the game to give him the game winning goal. Tutankhamun, Eva Lykke Aparjode, and Arsene Arsenich chipped in with the other three goals. This is a good look for Lethbridge as it's only Week 2 right now, plenty of time to turn it around and this proves they can hang with a contending team in the Scarecrows. Let's look for them to string a couple of these games together to climb the standings a bit.

Comment 2
STL Goalies Struggle
Billy Sorokin started in net for the Scarecrows. He played a good first 15 minutes, shutting the Lions out, and holding their 1-0 lead, but that quickly went away late in the first period. Trying to get his team to the intermission with the 1-0 lead, Sorokin let in 2 late goals in the finals 2 minutes of the 1st period. His team quickly tied it up in the early 2nd, but again he let in 2 more goals getting him pulled. Cain came in after that and played a decent game, although he let in another goal to give the Lions a 5-2 lead. All in all it was a poor performance for the STL goalies tonight.

Comments 3
Undisciplined Game
This was an undisciplined game for both teams, each taking 5 minor penalties each. The refs weren't letting anything slide tonight, but it looks like they did a good job balancing out the penalty minutes. STL went 2 for 5 on the PP, good for a 40% clip, this really kept them in the game as Lethbridge was really dominating 5 on 5. The Lions went 1 for 5 (20%), with their only power play goal coming from Jordan Joester, which also happened to be the game winning goal. These teams need to look to be more disciplined in the future, because either team isn't going to win many games if they give up five power plays to the opposition
