PGS S45: Game 51 - LBL v ANC
#1
(This post was last modified: 01-06-2019, 05:15 PM by Segi.)

Welcome to the post game show of the third week game between the Lethbridge Lions and the Anchorage Armada!

Lions 1:5 Armada

Game #51 of the SMJHL season 45 brings us a game between two teams with very different starts into the seasons. The Lions come from their already third loss against the Anaheim Outlaws in this still young season. In their first 10 games, the Lions have a record of 2-8. Only the Hallifax Raiders and the defending champion, the St. Louis Scarecrows have so far lost against the expansion team. Totally different, the Anchorage Armada. They started their season with a 7-3 record and are coming into this game on a 5 game win streak, with their latest game being a close 3-2 win against the Colorado Raptors. The Armada currently shares first place in the league with the Detroit Falcons.

Period 1

The game starts good for the underdog. In their first shift of the game, Kalevi Karhunen of the Armada comes too late to stop Joln DuBolk legally and gets a 2 minute hooking penalty. After 34 seconds, the Lions can send their power play formation on the ice for the first time in this game. And they only need 40 seconds until Arsene Arsenich opens the score. The Lions showed a beautiful combination in their first power play. Monkey D. Luffy and Joln DuBolk each get an assist. In the following minutes, the Armada show, why they are one of the best teams in the league. Dean Colt III alone gets off 3 shots within 3 minutes. At 4:25, Xena wins an offensive face off for the Armada, gets the puck right back by Eeron Niemi and is able to score herself. The Armada needed just over 4 minutes to tie the game up. After this, the game is mostly equal with chances on both sides until the Armada can play their first power play. Junebug Langdon-Wray can't fully stop a shot of Dean Colt III and Leopold Lockhart scores on the rebound. After 19:01, the home team get their first lead of the game.

Goals:
Lions Arsene Arsenich 1:14 (PP) - Assisted by Monkey D. Luffy and Joln DuBolk
Armada Xena 4:28 - Assisted by Eero Niemi
Armada Leopold Lockhart 19:01 (PP) - Assisted by Dean Colt III and Mika Mayfield

Period 2

Again, the Lions get the better start into the period. Eva Likke Aparjode manages to dangerously deflect a shot by Roger Baston, but Peter Larson is able to make the save. This period is rather uneventful with slight advantages for the Lions until the 38th minute. Bust's shot is deflected by Olivier Cloutier but just misses the net. However, Ricardo Cotalay gets to the puck first and is able to get his team a two goal lead. This is Cotalay's first SMJHL career goal!

Goals:
Armada Ricardo Cotalay 37:51 - Assisted by Olivier Cloutier and Bust

Period 3

The Armada comes out of the locker room determined to not make this a close game. After 5 minutes of pressure by Anchorage, Dean Colt III and Mika Mayfield both miss the net with their shots, but the Lions are unable to clear the puck and Maxime Bouchard is able to score and make the game 4-1. Just 4 minutes later, the Armada manages a turn around and Eero Niemi makes it 5-1. The game is now definitely decided and the last 10 minutes pass rather uneventful.

Goals:
Armada Maxime Bouchard 45:00 - Assisted by Mika Mayfield and Dean Colt III
Armada Eero Niemi 49:38 - Assisted by Oliver Kovacs and Thomas Speardane

Three stars

1. Armada Eero Niemi (1G, 1A)
2. Armada Leopold Lockhart (1G)
3. Armada Ricardo Cotalay (1G)

COMMENT ONE: Armada Overwhelms Lethbridge's Defensive Fleet

-Defense undid Lethbridge yet again in this blowout, as a couple goals were the result of the Armada getting sustained pressure with multiple shots in a row at even strength. The Lions goaltending routinely faces 30+ shots a game and are high on the leaderboard for shots allowed in the J. The odd turnover during the neutral zone breakouts didn't help matters either for the Lions, and two of them led to goals by Eero Niemi and Maxime Bouchard that helped ice the game for the Armada. Struggles are to be expected for a fresh expansion team, but the Lions went downhill after a preseason that wasn't totally terrible for them. Thats pretty concerning......

COMMENT TWO: Young Lions Lacking Claws In The Present

-Lethbridge may be good in a year or two, but right now the team's got all sorts of problems. The forward and defense corps are overworked on the depth end, as they're only rolling 3 lines and 3 pairings as opposed to 4 and 4. Several rookies have been benched, presumably for not putting out the required effort, but the answer may not be overworking the 3rd line and pairing to the tune of 18-20 minutes per game when they aren't ready to handle that. Even if the plan is to tank and build up, they could've done what the Outlaws did and secured several veterans and free agents to fill out the roster, adding some contributors in the first season to be in the playoff hunt. At least Monkey D Luffy is looking like a real find for the Lions, and could follow up his high draft position with another one next year at the SHL draft!

COMMENT THREE: Anchorage Analysis

-Top draft pick Olivier Cloutier got his first career assist for the Armada, and you know they want that to keep happening. Him, Johnny Sins, and Kalevi Karhunen are developing well so far according to Armada brass, and will hopefully translate that development to the scoresheet soon. Andris Dzerins is also progressing well, although he got burned badly in the faceoff circle tonight and will want to work on improving that. 2 for 12. Yikes. Overall, Anchorage looks to be good value for a playoff spot with eight returning veteran forwards, although the race is tight right now with 8 teams bunched closely together. Even though developing the rookies is important, getting another depth piece to take some even strength burden off of defensemen Jacob Geza and Leopold Lockhart might help them to win now......

#2 - Armada had more hits than their opponent, which helped them gain overall puck possession by forcefully taking the puck away. It's interesting to note that the most hits for a player on Armada was 2, but that was shared across multiple players. Conversely, Lions top hitters were Makeout-King with 5 hits, Tutankhamun with 3, and Arsenich with 2. The remaining players had either 1 or 0 hits. Physically, this was a tough game for the Lions, as they were constantly getting hit by all Armada lines, whereas Armada arguably only had to worry about Makeout-King and Tutankhamun from the Lions.

#3 - The shots had a large disparity between the two teams, with Armada having 10 more. This could be related to the physicality of the Armada, with only 5 players in their roster who didn't give a single hit. The Lions, however, had 9 players with 0 hits. Hockey is of course a physical game, and when players aren't taking the body to obtain puck possession, you can end up with situations such as this, where you're outhit, outshot, and outscored. It could have just been a bad game for the Lions, but they'll likely take notes and adjust their game in the future, especially when playing against Anchorage.

Hello and welcome to this week's Arbys™ Three Stars, your go-to section for who's the most valuable player in matches.

Arbys First Star - Eero Niemi Armada

Your first star goes to Niemi, top line right winger for the Armada. Niemi was the lone assist for Anchorage's first goal which very much set the tone of the rest of the match in this 5-1 blowout. He lead his team with 6 shots and was an impressive +/- of 2.

Arbys Second Star - Leopold Lockhart Armada

Your second star for this game goes to Leopold Lockhart. One of the many Anchorage players to put a point, he lead his team in time on ice at 20:55. His first point came off of a late first period power play goal which put the Armada on the road to a 5 goal lead which went unanswered by Lethbridge.

Arbys Third Star - Ricardo Cotalay Armada

The final star of the game goes to the rookie blue liner, Ricardo Cotalay. The first year SMJHLer had an impressive game, putting up a point in the lone goal of the second period. He also put in considerable effort into getting the puck on net and had an impressive amount of ice time for a rookie, clocking in 18:48.

Comment 2 (Unsung Hero):

Anchorage played a solid game throughout with multiple players contributing. Playing a solid quiet game was Armada goalie Peter Larson, who made 22 saves, posted a .957 percentage. He only allowed a goal on the powerplay after a brilliant pass by Monkey D. Luffy to Arsene Arsenich on a rush after a bad change by Armada. Larson held down the fort in the 2nd period when the Lethbridge Lions took control of the game early in that period outshooting the Armada 8 to 6. All 8 of those shots came in the first 11:30 minutes of the 2nd period maintaining the momentum for the team to finish the game off.

Missing person report - Lethbridge Lions defence
Have you seen the Lions defence? If so, please call Brennan Kennedy Jr. because he needs some help The Lethbridge Lions workhorse defenceman logged a team high, for both teams, of 21:04 TOI. 1:10 of this came on the PP, and 0:14 of the time came on the PK. The defenceman only managed 2 shots on net, but he did block 3 shots for his goaltender. He ended the game a -2, though in a 5-1 game nothing on the Lions were clicking. He, and the rest of the Lions will be looking for a better team effort after this game got away from them. You can't win to many games giving up 5 unanswered goals. This expansion team will have to tighten up their defence, or it will be a long season

First comment:

Lethbridge goalie Junebug Langdon-Wray really struggled this game. Whenever you concede 5 goals in a game, you can usually blame a poor defense but the young goalie for the Lions let in 5 goals on 33 shots, for a save percentage of just 84.8%. That is not good enough as a professional player, and Anchorage really punished the Lions' suspect goalkeeping ability. Particularly in the second period and third period, Anchorage outscored the Lions 3-0, while the Armada only went on the Power Play once the entire game. This simply just isn't good enough for the expansion team.

Second comment:

This was a very balanced attack from the Anchorage Armada. 5 different players scored the 5 goals for the team. Mike Mayfield also recorded two assists, pushing his assist total to an astounding 11 for the season. Olivier Cloutier, the highly hyped first round draft pick of Anchorage, also finally recorded his first assist for the team. This has been a long time coming for Cloutier, who has struggled to create chances for his teammates despite his excellent performance in the prospect showcase prior to the draft. Expect Cloutier to push on and really get the puck moving to his teammates from now on, now that the monkey is off his back.

Third comment:

This was a relatively clean game for both defenses in terms of committing penalties. In the SMJHL, you tend to see a lot more penalties as players are less refined and commit dumb mental mistakes as well. This was not the case in this game. Just 3 penalties in this game, all in the first period. That means that is 40 minutes of totally clean, 5 on 5 play. Always good for the neutral fan to see, and it makes Anchorage's performance all the more impressive, as it is not as though the Lethbridge Lions made many mental mistakes that led to a man disadvantage for extended periods. Anchorage simply dominated 5 on 5, in neutral.

Karl's Stars

1st star - Eero Niemi Armada - hard to stray away from the sims selection for 1st star on this one. Several Armada players managed to tally 2 points in their commanding 5-1 win, but Eero stands above them with 1 goal, 1 assist and a team leading 6 shots.
2nd star - Dean Colt III Armada - a playmaker by trade I tend to value assists more than the sim and once again I can't help but give the second year center some love with his 2 assists. Dean also put a lot of rubber on net with 5 shots of his own.
3rd star - Arsene Arsenich Lions - it's difficult to be consider a difference maker when you lose 5-1, but give credit where it's due. Arsene tallied the Lions lone goal in this one as well as led the team in shots on goal with 5. His 2 hits were also a factor.

Thanks for the sig ragnar!

3 Stars of the Game

1 - Eero Niemi (ANC) - 1G, 1A, 2P, +2, 0PIM - Niemi was a force to be reckoned with tonight. He didn't have the time on ice of other players on his team, but he didn't need it. Shooting from everywhere as evidenced by his 6 shots and finally getting his goal towards the end of the game as it was already decided.

2 - Leopold Lockhart (ANC) - 1G, 0A, 1P, +2, 0PIM - Lockhart only had 1 shot and that's all he needed to score as he sat on the blueline and also ate some big minutes for his team. He was an anchor on the backend with his strong defensive play during the game.

3 - Ricardo Cotalay (ANC) - 1G, 0A, 1P, +2, 0PIM - Ricardo plays on the bottom D pairing, but still makes the most of his time when he steps on the ice. Taking shots, and hitting anything he saw, his strong play tonight is what earned him the 3rd star of the game.

TSN Turning Point

The turning point of this game was Ricardo Cotalays goal to put the Armada up 3 - 1 late in the 2nd period. The Lions could see themeselves getting into the game only being down by 1 after the first period. They battled hard and ended up coming up short as Cotalay let one rip and hit the back of the net. The Lions saw their hopes dwindle as the struggle to get wins this season and Ricardos goal just crushed any hopes of getting the W in this game. That's why this moment is where hte game took a turn, for the worst if your a Lions fan, and for the best for all the Alaskans.

Worst Player of the Game

Looking at the whole roster of the Lions, I really don't see one player that sticks out as the worst player without a doubt, so for that reason the worst player of the game is actually the whole Lethbridge Lions team. Besides scoring the first goal of the game, nothing seemed to work out or come together from that moment for the rest of the game. Passes were off, shots were wide, and defensive assignments missed. The Lions netminder, Junebug, was hung out to dry more then once and managed to bail her team out a few times. If not this could of easily been a 10-1 game instead. The Lions are an expansion team, and tonight, that was painfully obvious as they worked through their growing pains.

Game 51 Simweek 3 Lethbridge Lions vs Anchorage Armada

Anchorages Armadas Danish goaltender Peter Larson (who has a fantastic Avatar here in the forum btw) made a very good game and hat a great performance in his third W he earned. At this point of time he was 100% at 3-0-0 in his record. Junebug Langdon-Wray from the Lethbridge Lions had to face and save many shots. His Defence allowed 33 and he could only save 28 of them. Much shots for a young goalie. The offence hadn’t helped either and the armada scored 5 unanswered goals.

Comment 1:
Those first 4:28 seconds were going to well for the Lethbridge Lions and then it all came tumbling down after that. The Lions need to get their roster to a point where they can more evenly run lines so as not to burn out their players. Their 4th lines Defence and 4th line offence played a paltry 3:01 COMBINED. While Anchorage didn't even bother to ice their 4th defensive line at least their 4th offensive line was able to get out and collect 8:52 of ice time. It could be a long season of Lethbridge, hopefully this expansion team can battle through a rough first season.

Last Minute 1st Period Goal Propels Anchorage

After conceding a powerplay goal only 1:14 into the game, the Anchorage Armada bounced back in a big way. With less than 1 minute left in the first period, Leopold Lockhart scored his 3rd of the season on the powerplay, one of two Anchorage defensemen to score tonight, giving Anchorage their first lead of the game that they would not lose. Goals in the last minute of a period can be huge momentum shifters, as it seems to have been here with Anchorage holding Lethrbridge off the scoresheet for the rest of the game, while piling up 5 goals of their own.

Larson Continues to Wow
It's still early in the season for rookie goaltender Peter Larson, but he's already proving his mettle and assuring management they made a good draft selection with his 3-0-0 win record. Larson is lucky enough to have a strong, experienced players up front (players like Lockhart, Xena, Niemi, Mayfield, and Kovacs certainly shone in this game), but making 22 saves on 23 shots for a 0.957 save percentage is nothing to sneeze at. It's hard to imagine how Larson could go up from here, but Anchorage fans are surely in for a treat as the rookie continues to improve throughout the season.

Interview with Leopold Lockhart
How important was your powerplay goal in the first for the mood in the dressing room at intermission?
It put us ahead, so I think that was pretty important since they got the first goal. It definitely helped get the momentum going and set the tone for the rest of the game. The mood in the dressing room was positive, but focused on getting the win. A one goal lead is never a sure thing, so we just try to stay focused.

The Lions never bounced back after that first goal. Why do you think that is?
I think we just had the momentum. It's never fun to end a period behind and to know you have to come out and try to catch up. It's easy to get frustrated when that happens.

How is the team finding Larson's success so far?
Man, that kid's incredible. I think he gives us a lot of confidence when we play in front of him. I can't wait to see where he'll go from here, because he's only gonna get better.

Cotalay Makes His Mark
Offensive defenceman Ricardo Cotalay notched his first SMJHL goal in the dying minutes of the second period, extending Anchorage's lead to two goals ahead. Kenji Yoshimura won the face-off in the Lions' zone, starting off a bit of keepaway between Yoshimura, Thomas Speardane, Olivier Cloutier, and Bust as the team looked for an opening. Yoshimura passed to Cotalay, who saw a chance, but Lions' goalie Junebug Langdon-Wray made the save. Bust recovered the rebound and sent it right back at the goal, but the shot was deflected wide by Cloutier, bouncing off the endboards and meeting Cotalay's stick - and then the back of the net. Not quite a beauty of a goal, but nothing tastes as sweet as the first of what is hopefully many for Cotalay's career.

Comment 1: Have you ArSEEN this guy?

Veteran presence for the Lions is a very important thing, especially for a group consisting of rookies. Arsene Arsenich is a big factor in this. Scoring his 6th of the season in the 5-1 loss, the vet has been very adamant about setting a good example for the rookies. In an interview by SHLTV host Jim Bakur: "Honestly, the best thing we can do for the young guys is to get out there with them and support them as much as we can. For a team with a bunch of rookies, there's not a whole lot we can ask for." Arsenich was formerly from the Anchorage Armada, taken in the Expansion Draft.

Comment 2: Three is Supposed to be the Magic Number, Right...?

Lethbridge is currently the only team with 3 forward lines. Through their first season so far, it's been one of their downfalls. On average, all three lines see equal playing time (about 20 minutes a night from all lines). This understandably leads to earlier exhaustion in the game. This especially showed tonight: after Arsenich's first goal of the game, there was nothing else that came from the forward lines. They looked visibly tired, failing to land some hits and block some shots. While conditioning plays a part of it, there is no question that the Lions need help up front to let their rookies breathe a bit.

Comment 3: Junebugs in the Open Field

For goaltender Junebug Langdon-Wray, she had a rough night: 5 goals against out of 33 shots, and little help up front. While there was no question that the goaltender was left out to dry for patches on end, there has been rumors about the goaltender's accountability. Goaltender coach Fortie Fuur mentioned in a post-practice interview: "I wouldn't be supprised if Patrice gets more starts at the end of the day. June is a great gal, don't get me wrong, but her effort during practice and morning skate is very minimal. Pat, on the other hand, is usually the first person to arrive each morning and asks me to shoot some pucks at him."

Comment 8

After there strong showing last week, the Lions were clipped, and clipped hard. Multiple factors at play, predominantly the Flotilla set to defense positions and not letting up good chances. The Goalies tried there best, and Langdon-Wray was left in for all 5 goals, although due to the schedule there does not seem to be any intent other than making sure that everyone is utilized efficiently. It will be interesting to follow that story closely to see if there are any more rifts that develop in that organization. Otherwise, a strong showing from the ANC goalie and hoping to start some strong momentum with it!
