PGS S45: KEL vs HAL
#1
(This post was last modified: 01-06-2019, 06:12 PM by Kalakar.)

Welcome to the post game show between Halifax and Kelowna
Knights vs  raiders 3

Game #54 of the SMJHL takes us to Halifax where both teams should be well rested as neither teams played last night. Three weeks have passed already and we are starting to get a clearer picture at the standings. Coming into this game, Kelowna sits in the middle of the pack with a 6-4-0 record in 10 games played. As for their opponent, Halifax comes in dead last in the standings, having lost all of their games so far either in regulation or overtime with a 0-7-3 record.

1st Period

The home team, eager for their first win, start strong in the early game. Halifax forward Troy Reynolds comes in the offensive zone but his shot is stopped by Big Fudge. Dylan Karlsson takes the rebound but is immediately denied by Big Fudge's defenseman partner Scott Niedermayer Jr.. Halifax's Clifton Outlaw thinking they won't be denied a third time grabs the puck and shoots it directly at Big Fudge's kneepad shortly after.

The first penalty of the game goes to David Vent for hooking on Jimmy Slothface. Halifax deploys their first powerplay unit in hopes of getting an early lead in the game. They clearly hit a wall when Vivian Leblanc makes brilliant saves on multiple Halifax players to shut them down.

The Knights dump the puck into the Raiders zone for a lineup change. Touncie Bitties retrieves the puck and passes it to Matt Kholin at the blue line. The centerman hands it off to Troy Reynolds who skates into the offensive zone and sends the puck over to Clifton Outlaw. The young prospect shoots the puck as soon as it hits his stick which makes it into the net right below Leblanc's blocker.

David Vent tries to clear the puck but it goes over the boards into the stands. He is sent to the penalty box for delay of game. Halifax set up their second power play unit after the puck is dumped into their end. Mikael Choybuk picks it up and sends it over to Mr. Faceoffs, who moves the puck into the Kelowna's defensive zone and leaves it at the blue line for Dominic Montgomery. The newly appointed captain shoots the puck but is blocked by centerman Nickolas Klaus. Montgomery winds up and shoots the rebound puck which flies straight into the net.

Goals:

raiders  Clifton Outlaw (3) 13:22 - Assisted by Troy Reynolds (1), Matt Kholin (4)
raiders  Dominic Montgomery (2) 17:03 (PP)  - Assisted by Mr. Faceoffs (8), Mikael Choybuk (4)

2nd period

The great rookie Karlstraße Scholz retrieves the puck in front of the Halifax goalie but his shot is denied by Mike McKorsy. After the play ends, the Raiders captain slashes the young 1st rounder and is immediately sent to the penalty box on a double minor. The Kelowna players set up their power play and quickly passes the puck around to try to make McKorsy move as much as possible in his net. Guy Zheng proves to be already a valuable member of the Kelowna defensive corps as he takes matters into his own hands to control the power play and slaps the puck after Halifax's Desmond Carey tried to block it a second time but failed. Young goaltender McKorsy fails to see the puck and it goes into the net for Zheng's first goal in the SMJHL.

A great play by the Kelowna Knights after the Halifax players fail to control the puck in their own zone to tie the game early in the second period. Bobby Sharp and David Vent created the play themselves by setting up Dick Clapper with an easy wide open goal.

Late in the second, Nathan Explosion stays true to his name with a great zone entry while the Raiders players have tired legs. His shot misses wide but manages to score his first goal in the SMJHL on the rebound. The great play by Explosion sends Kelowna in the lead for the first time in the game.

Goals:

Knights  Guy Zheng (1) 2:05 (PP) - Assisted by Vladislav Konstantin (6), Sanyi Kocsis (7)
Knights  Dick Clapper (3) - 4:22 - Assisted by Bobby Sharp (3), David Vent (2)
Knights  Nathan Explosion (1) 15:19 - Assisted by Dick Clapper (5), Scott Niedermayer Jr. (2)

Third period

Coming off yet another third period from behind, the Halifax Raiders will try to come out on top after tonight's game to win their first win of the season. However, Kelowna has other plans in mind for tonight.

The Knights' first line shows yet again the opposing team who will win tonight by moving the puck deep from their own end to behind McKorsy's net in just a few seconds.

The Raiders players are getting desperate for a goal to come back in the game, but the Knights don't want to hear any of it. Halifax's Choybuk is caught holding Vladislav Konstantin along the boards and is sent to the penalty box. Halifax has once again no answers for Kelowna's power play units as they move the puck seemlessly between their players to put it in the net.

Late in the third, unaware that the game ends in 2 minutes, the Raiders' second line players move the puck intro the offensive zone to try to make something happen. A week shot by Choybuk is deflected by Rainbow Dash to lessen the gap between the two teams. Unfortunately, there is not enough time for Halifax to make something else happen, and Kelowna leave the ice with another win under their belt. Halifax will have to wait once again for their first win.

Goals:

Knights  Nickolas Klaus (6) 0:22 - Assisted by Sanyi Kocsis (8), Karlstraße Scholz (6)
Knights  Nolan Sawchuk (5) 15:42 (PP) - Assisted by Nickolas Klaus (7), Karlstraße Scholz (7)
raiders  Rainbow Dash (1) 18:31 (PP) - Assisted by Mikael Choybuk (5), Dominic Montgomery (6)

3 stars:

Knights  1. Nickolas Klaus (1G, 1A)
Knights  2. Dick Clapper (1G, 1A)
Knights  3. Nolan Sawchuk (1G)

Comment One:

Glutes Media's Three Stars Of the Game

Note: These stars may be different from those determined by the sim.

First Star: Nickolas Klaus (KEL)
Klaus managed 1 game winning goal and 1 assist tonight, and gave two enormous hits while playing an astounding 23 minutes of ice time. Overall, Klaus gave an absolutely electrifying performance.

Second Star: Dick Clapper (KEL)
The rookie third-line winger surprised us again with a great performance, this time with 1 goal and 1 assist. It's only a matter of time before Clapper is given the chance to play on the second line.

Third Star: Dominic Montgomery (HAL)
Montgomery did everything in his power to keep the Raiders in this game, but it just wasn't meant to be. The star defenseman logged a heavy 23 minutes of ice time and scored 1 goal and 1 assist, both on the powerplay.

Comment Two:
Turning Point of the Game: Guy Zheng's Powerplay Goal
Spirits were down after the disheartening first period, with the Raiders scoring 2 goals to the Knights' 0. The team needed something to rally behind, and Guy Zheng gave them exactly that with a powerplay goal early in the second period. This was his first goal of the season, and it certainly wasn't pretty. Zheng managed to drive this one home after a mess of rebounds, blocks, and scrambling in front of the net, but it was just enough to raise the spirits of the Knights. After this goal, Kelowna quickly responded with another two goals in the second period and five straight goals without answer in total. Some might say that the Knights owe their victory to Zheng's messy heroics.

Comment Three:
Goalie of the Game: Vivian Leblanc (KEL)
I'm constantly surprised and amazed by Leblanc's abilities, and this game was no different. The SMJHL sophomore recorded a 0.919 save percentage, allowing only 3 goals on 37 shots. This was a shot-heavy game where defense was left as a second thought, but Leblanc stepped up and kept Kelowna in the game, even after conceding two early goals. The most impressive part of Leblanc's heroics this game was in the third period, where she allowed only one goal on a staggering 17 shots. The Knights definitely need to lend a helping hand to their starting goalie, but for now, Leblanc is quietly racking up a monster of a season and will hope to carry the Knights into a high standing.

Comment one
Kelowna Knights dominant second period
The Kelowna Knights had their most dominant period performance in this game against the Halifax Raiders. In this second period the Knights outshot the Raiders 13 to 6 and scored 3 goals on those 13 attempts.  At 2:05 on a double minor slashing penalty from Dominic Montgomery the Knights scored their first power play goal of the game. Defenseman Guy Zheng ripped one from the blue line for his first goal of the season. Shortly after the second powerplay of the Knights was over Dick Clapper scored his third goal of the season with a tip-in from a nice Bobby Sharp shot that was deflected. The Knights added a third goal this period when Nathan Explosion was able to shoot from his rebound to bring the Knights in the lead. Such a better performance in the second period for the Knights compared to the first.

Comment two
Karlstraße Scholz, a rookie destined for HOF

If you are thinking about future HOF-ers than you already consider Karlstraße Scholz. The rookie defenseman has had a solid start of the season and is showing so much potential to be hockey elite. He recorded 24:14 minutes of icetime, most on the Knights roster. Among those minutes he spend 4:06 on the power play and 6:04 on the penalty kill. The young defenseman recorded another pair of assists today against the Halifax Raiders and has seven total for the season until now. Karlstraße Scholz is one of the reasons that the Kelowna Knights are performing like they are right now. One could not have drafter a better defenseman.

Comment three
Sanyi Kocsis finding his form

It was reported that Kelowna Knights captain Sanyi Kocsis performance was suffering from off ice issues a few days ago, but today Sanyi had no sign of those issues. Pairing a couple of assists in todays game showed he was back to his original form. Kocsis recorded 24:03 minutes of icetime, second best on the team behind Karlstraße Scholz. Rumor has it that while now Fortnite is banned in the Kelowna Knights lockerroom that Sanyi Kocsis is getting his focus back on hockey. Just in time, because Kelowna Knights have a tough few games ahead of them.

Gameday 16 Game 54

Mike McKorsy had to swallow the pill of another loss against the Knights from Kelowna. Still waiting for his first win in a regular game in north America McKorsy tried to stay focused even if his start in the SMJHL was poor and he was very sad about this. In the second period he couldn’t help his team enough to keep the raiders in front. Leading 2-0 after the first period the Raiders went with a 2-3 deficit in the 2nd submission. The game got lost with 3-5 and Mike McKorsys bad performance was a reason for that too. His SV% was low like in the other games before and that’s not enough goaltending to win SMJHL Games.

Comment 1:

THE GOON SQUAD
Kelowna Knights: David Vent (6 minutes)
Halifax Raiders: Dominic Montgomery, Michael Choybuk, and Perry Morgan (tie, 4 minutes)

The game between Halifax and Kelowna was a spirited affair with plenty of physical play.  This lead to a combined twenty-eight minutes of penalty time between the two teams, all minor penalties as well.  Leading the way for the Kelowna Knights was David Vent with 6 minutes in penalties.  His crimes included hooking, delay of game, and roughing.  This was particularly concerning for the Knights as Vent plays on Kelowna's top penalty killing pair.  Halifax did score on 1 of 3 of Vent's penalties.  Halifax on the other hand decided to spread out their minutes, having three players tied for four minutes a piece: Montgomery, Choybuk, and Morgan.  It appears that the weapon of choice for Halifax was the stick as most of their penalties were slashes or hooks.  Both teams eventually would give up two power play goals on seven opportunities.

Comment 2:

Move Over John Travolta and Nick Cage: The Real Face/Off

There probably isn't a more aptly named player in the league than Mr. Faceoffs, and his talents were on full display in the game against Kelowna.  Mr. Faceoffs took a whopping FORTY FOUR faceoffs in this game!  He ended up winning twenty five of them for a percentage of 56%, almost two percentage points higher than his season average.  His faceoff prowess was integral in his line gaining possession often in the game, and allowed Mr. Faceoffs to chip in an assist and four shots to go along with all of his faceoff wins.  Unfortunately, the faceoff wins weren't enough as Mr. Faceoffs ended up a minus 2 overall, although it was hardly his fault.  Most of the Halifax roster ended up in the minus column in this loss.

Comment 3:

Discontent in Halifax?

One doesn't have to look hard at the box score to notice something strange: the Raiders dressed a player that saw zero minutes of ice time.  Yung Javi found his butt permanently glued to the bench for the entire game against Kelowna.  In looking at the Raiders' season stats, Javi has seen a monstrous two minutes on the season and appears to be in the coach's doghouse.  I tried to interview Javi after the game to see if he could offer any perspective on why he isn't getting any minutes and Javi did not respond.  As in he just sat there staring blankly ahead.  If his chest wasn't slowly rising and falling I would have thought he was dead.  Something strange is afoot in Halifax!

My player spotlight of today is Nathan Explosion of the Kelowna Knights. Nathan was not listed as a draftee and signed as a free agent while the season was already underway. Hence the powerforward winger from Finland did miss the first two games of the season. Playing on the third line along with rookies Barry Batsbak and Dick Clapper, Nathan's first explosion came in this game, where he notched his first goal of the season. I took him 9 games to find the net. It was just his second point of the season after his assist on Karlstrabe Scholz's goal in Kelowna's third game of the season and his first in a Knights shirt.

Knights Explosive 2nd Period

Nathan Explosion caps off a 2nd period explosion for the Kelowna Knights where they outshot Halifax 13-6 and outscored them 3-0. After taking 13 shots in the first with only a 2 goal deficient to show for it, the Knights came out in the 2nd guns blazing. Guy Zheng got his first of the year, followed by Dick Clapper only 2:17 later, and Explosion finished off the period. The Knights took this momentum into the third, scoring just 22 seconds in and grabbing some insurance in the final 5 minutes. Halifax managed a late PP goal but the lead was already insurmountable.

First Star: Nickolas Klaus (KEL)
Nickolas Klaus found himself being the first star of the game after quite a strong performance. He scored the game winner and additionally assisted on the final goal of the game. In addition to his points, he played 23 minutes tonight, with 6 minutes each on both the power play and penalty kill. Lastly, he took a team high 48 face-offs tonight.

Second Star: Dick Clapper (KEL)
Clapper was the second star of the game tonight, after scoring the 2-2 game tying goal in the second period and then assisting on the go ahead goal 10 minutes later. He has been having quite a spectacular rookie season, currently on the third line. Hopefully he can continue to progress and perhaps end up on the second line later in the season.

Third Star: Nolan Sawchuk (KEL)
Sawchuk scored the 5-2 goal solidifying the game late in the third period, making himself the third star. He logged 23 minutes, with 6 minutes on each the power play and penalty kill similar to Klaus. Something that stands him out from the rest of the team, however, is the fact that he took 11 shots tonight, making his presence well known to the other team.

The turning point for tonights game seems to be an easy one. Kelowna was down 2-0 entering the 2nd period and the game was quickly heading out of reach. Offensive pressure by the Knights caused Halifax to take a slashing penalty giving Kelowna a chance to capitalize. Capitalize they did as Guy Zheng scored his first of the season just 2 minutes into the period. This goal clearly got the team going as they continued to score, in fact, scoring 4 more before the Raiders could get one in. This first goal created a torrent of offensive pressure as Kelowna scored another goal just 2 minutes after the first, and they continued to dominate the second period scoring again 15 minutes in.

My unsung hero of this game has to be Karl Scholz. Scholz assisted on both the game winner and the final Kelowna goal of the game. This player logged over 24 minutes of play time with 4 on the power play and over 6 of those minutes on the penalty kill. Special teams got a lot of action tonight as Halifax got 7 opportunities with a man advantage. Unfortunately they managed to cash in on two of them but still blanked on the other 5. Of course, a 71% penalty kill is not great, there is still a lot of time left in the season to improve. With Scholz leading the first line defense, I have faith that our penalty kill will continue to improve.

Despite only have 5 additional Shots on Goal, Kelowna managed a 2 goal lead over the Halifax Raiders. Both teams, however, were evenly matched in Penalty Minutes. Multiple minors for several players and one Double Minor for Dominic Montgomery from Halifax for Slashing. Four of the goals scored tonight were Power Play goals, 2 from each side. As a whole, it doesn't appear that either team was particularly dominant over the other, but the Kelowna Knights managed to squeak in those extra two goals to add two points to their record.

Comment 1 :
5 different scorers for Kelowna

The Kelowna Knights offense all contributed in this win against the new expansion team, the Halifax Raiders. Kelowna scored their 5 goals after trailing 0-2. Big names such as Klaus and Sawchuk registered their 6th and 5th, Dick Clapper registered his third goal of the year and rookie Zeng and Explosion got their 1st of the season and of their young career. Even though Halifax brought the game back 5-3, the 5 straight goals cut their legs and couldn't bring themselves back in the game in time. @ of these 5 goals came from the powerplay, the rest from even strenght displaying good opportunism from the Knights.

Comment 2:

Goalie Performance.

Both goalie had big games shotwise as the Knights tested Mike McKorsy 42 times and Vivian Leblanc denied the raiders on 34 of their 37 shots. This is definitly one the the most offensive game of the season so far and both goalies were relatively solid. You have to keep in mind Raiders is a team consiting of a lot of rookie players and that despite being scored 5 times, the gap could have been wider if they didn't tighten up defensively. Mike Korsky would have definitly loved recording his first win as a raider because before the game he was 0-6-3 and his performance could have led to a succes but his team just couldn't score enough this time.

On the other side, Vivian Leblanc has been getting Knights fans and players confident in her abilities as she keeps recording big wins having a say in most of them. She was chosen 4th star of the game by many journalists.

Comment 3:

Total Domination from Sawchuk and Klaus as they registered 18 shots altogether on the Raiders goalie. Klaus with 7 shots and Sawchuk with 11 is one of their biggest performance of the year. This is without counting shots that were blocked, deflected of missed the net. In comparison, Raiders also had big shot counts from their first line players, Montgomery with 7 shots, Mouette and Karlson recording 5 each. Back to Knights players, if it wasn't for a big performance from halifax goaltender, their scoring percentage would have been higher. Most of their shots were high quality and some could say the palyers may lack finnish but that would mean being disrespcting Mike McKorsy's performance.

First Comment: Save of the Game

The save of the game occurred very early in this match-up between Kelowna and Halifax, less than two minutes into the first period. Kristers Dzelme won the faceoff against Shouta Aizawa in Kelowna's end, and the puck went back to Vegeta Muerto, who ripped a bullet of a pass across the zone, going tape-to-tape with Frank Mouette. Mouette, anticipating the play, raced forward as soon as the faceoff was taken, and found himself in the high-danger area of the slot as he one-timed the pass straight at the top corner of the net. While it should have been a sure goal, and would have been 99 out of the other 100 times that shot was taken, Vivian Leblanc made sure it was that 1 in 100 save that energizes your whole bench. Performing an excellent display of the splits, Leblanc outstreched thier glove hand and just caught enough of it for the puck to redirect down into the ice. Quickly collapsing on the loose puck in the blue paint, Leblanc held on for a quick whistle and brought forth the puck to thunderous applause, as they kept the tied scoreless as 0 apiece.

Second Comment: Hit of the Game

Nickolas Klaus, the newly-minted German national, receives our  nightly hit of the game accolade. Approaching the end of the second period, the Knights led 3-2 and things were heated with the game so close. It's not very often you get the drop on Andrej Doskocil, but Klaus did just that, catching him off-guard as he collected the puck in his own zone with a crunching hit along the boards. Causing a turnover, Klaus took advantage of his temporarily stunned opponent by dishing the puck to teammate Vladislav Konstantin. Konstantin would deliver a powerful one-time slapshot, but kept it a little too close to center as Mike McKorsy swallowed the puck into his chest protector. While the play didn't result in a late 2nd-period goal, it was an excellent scoring opportunity created from an unexpected but well-placed and well timed hit by Nickolas Klaus.

Third Comment: Goal of the Game

With Kristers Dzelme doing very well in the faceoff circle tonight (14/22), it was no surprise that this play, and our goal of the game, started with a faceoff win by the Latvian power pivot. On the power play, the puck was immediately cycled to rookie sensation Karlstrasse Scholz, and the Second-overall S45 SMJHL pick mad the samrt play, faking a wrist shot and sliding it over to his blue-line powerplay partner and leading defenseman scorer Sanyi Kocsis. The big Hungarian-born skater took full advantage of Karlstrasse's faked shot, using the opening made in the Halifax PK defense to thread a quick pass to Nolan Sawchuk, someone who should never be left in alone in the high slot was all alone in front of the net, and it's unsurprising what happened next. Sawchuk roofed the puck without hesitation, popping of McKorsy's water bottle and setting off the red light for a backbreaking goal at this point in the game. Before, a 4-2 game was far behind, but not insurmountable.  With less than 5 minutes to go in the third, that Sawchuk goal would put a stake in the hopes of the Halifax Raiders, who would add a powerplay tally later in the period, but ultimately lost the game 5-3.

The Insignificantly Significant Player Of The Game.
A ridiculous Wawazat award .. Awarded to the player with less than 7 minutes of ice time that actually registered something positive.
The Ninth recipient of this trivial achievement..
Is Kelowna Knights Fourth Line Center Justin Siddals
Justin contributed 3 shots on goal and went 6/8 from the face off circle in this Kelowna victory and he did it with only 8:41 of premium SMJHL ice time. Siddals also stepped up and stepped in on both Powerplay (:45 seconds) and the Penalty kill (:21 seconds). Although not listed as a member of either squad in the game log. Although his 8:41 breaks the 7 minute barrier Siddals is about the closest player our crack research team could find to meeting the now rubber band 7 minute requirement. ( It may become necessary to permanently alter this requirement in future editions.)
But for now congrats to Kelowna Knights Center Justin Siddals.
