Hey, we're still in a top-6 playoff spot! Let's look at how we got here... And how we can get even better.

The goods:

- Colorado's first defensive line is a pretty interesting combination so far. Cassius Darrow and Anastasia O'Koivu have a combined 61 shot blocks on the season, with the two of them ranked 1st and 2nd on the team, in that regard.
- Ushakov's awesome. He's had a phenomenal season so far, currently sitting 2nd in SV% (0.898) and 3rd in GAA (2.64). It's been nice to have this kind of strong goaltending, since the starting cast of skaters is so loaded with rookies still trying to find their bearings.
- Physical play's going well - Lillie Jacobs and Jean-Pierre Gay have hit counts of 85 and 75, respectively, putting them both in the top 10 for the league. This is indicative of a greater pattern, as the team as a whole sits first in the league in hits/GP with 19.86, nearly 3 whole hits per game above league average.

That being said...

-Perhaps the rest of the defensive core should emulate their first line's physical play. The team is currently sitting in the bottom half of the league in shot blocks despite the first line's best efforts, with a total of 194 for the whole team.
-Oof, Faceoffs. The team sits near the bottom of the pack in FO%, which surely doesn't help us with regards to possession. The team currently has a 47.78% FO%, behind only Lethbridge for worst in the league.
-What in the fuck are we doing with our shooting? League average in shots/GP is 26.18, yet we sit near the bottom of the league with a fat 24.57. Yikes. It'd be nice if we could pick up the generalized offense rather than tryna let Selich do all the work, maybe with just a sheer greater volume of shots, we'd get some nice bounces.
-Let's maybe do something about our penalty numbers (whoops @ me). They're kind of rough. We have the third highest in the league, with 277 total.

It's a brand new season for the St. Louis Scarecrows, and the reigning 4-star Cup Champions have found themselves in unfamiliar territory. Not only are there a plethora of new faces in the SMJHL, but two new teams now grace the 10-team league, a rapid expansion prompted by the overflow of rookies. Also charted as unfamiliar territory, the Scarecrows are out of a playoff position as of this writing, sitting at a 9-8-0 record. While at a positive win percentage, it is not enough in the new SMJHL, which currently has a bevy of teams close together in points. St Louis sits at 18 points, two out of a playoff position and 6 points out of top spot, meaning just three wins separate the Crows from first place. However, the competition at the top is fierce, with Detroit and Vancouver leading the league with 24 points, and Anaheim and Kelowna currently barring the Crow's path back to the playoffs. Lethbridge and Halifax languish far below at the bottom of the standings with only 6 points each on the season, leaving no middle ground for the other eight teams.

If the Scarecrows want to turn things around, it's their 5 on 5 play that needs to improve. The sit at a third-best special teams total percentage (106.74%), thanks to an excellent penalty kill and decent powerplay, but overall lag behind on GF/GA totals, being the only team not named Lethbridge or Halifax that has less than 100 % (96.08). It's early in the season, and the teams are very close, so by the time another writing might happen, the Scarecrows could easily be in a playoff spot, and heading back to the postseason with a high seeding.

I'm not going to lie. It's been a rough inaugural season for the beloved lethbridge lions Lions. It started with a mountain of enthusiasm but the abysmal 3-14 record tells the whole story. All the enthusiasm in the world can't make up for the lack of capped players, which not all the fault of the lions, but it can't really be used as an excuse as the other rookie team isn't doing as bad. With the worst goals for (36) and the 2nd most goals against (62) the lions are just not producing enough nor contributing enough defense to help out the rookie goalie. 2nd worst in both PP (10%) and PK (74%) is clearly letting the team down just as hard as production. We are all hoping the rest of the season pans out for the lions when they finally find a line combination that works out the best for them! Still excited to see the team to start jellin, hopefully in time for the playoffs! LETS GO LIONS :Lions GANG

outlaws have played fairly well for the start of the season really thriving on the pk with an above average pk at 85.25% and a solid 51.48 faceoff perentage. However we are struggling hard making those offensive playes to take those much needed shots and stopping other teams from getting their shots off. Which has made our goialies have to kick it into overdrive to come out on top in these games. We average the lowest in the league with 22.94 shots for and 28.94 shots against working to bring out a abysmal 79.27% SF/A. Our team should really be looking to focus a little more on offense and pick up a few more defensive power houses to round us out its going to be a tough grind but as the team grows and our rookies get a few more tpe we should be able to put it together our gm has been looking hard and making some big dcisions on the line choices and we should see some inprovment immediately.

Halifax Raiders Through 17 Games

Stat 1: WINS
It is easy enough to see where the Raiders need to improve so far this season, the win column!  It has been a rough start to the year with only 1 win in the first 17 games.  The Lions, the next worse team, have three times as many wins as Halifax, but due to loser points the Raiders are very lucky to be tied with the Lions for last place.

Stat 2: GOAL DIFFERENTIAL
Once again Halifax finds itself neck and neck with Lethbridge at the bottom a category: goal differential.  Halifax shockingly is slightly better than the Lions, sitting at a -25 goal differential compared to the Lions' -26.  Halifax's league worst 66 goals against is the culprit here, although their goals for is still second worst in the SMJHL.  Halifax's goalie, Mike McKorsy, has been heating up a bit lately though, including 42 saves on 44 shots in back to back games against Detroit (including Halifax's lone win).  With the team struggling to score they'll need Mike to continue that play.

Stat 3: PENALTY MINUTES/PENALTY KILL
At this point in the season Halifax finds itself with the third most penalty minutes in the entire league.  When you add in the fact that the Raiders' penalty kill is by far the league worst at 65% you have a recipe for disaster.  With some shakeups to the lineup, including taking Jimmy Slothface off of the penalty kill, the Raiders have actually enjoyed a little better penalty killing success, although that will need to continue to trend upward mightily merely to become league average.

Stat 3: POWER PLAY
It isn't all doom and gloom for the Raiders, they do currently sport the third highest power play conversion rate in the league to date.  They've been bolstered by being awarded the second most power plays in the league so far, but that doesn't necessarily lead to success: just look at the Lions leading the league in power play attempts but being second to last in conversion percentage.  The Raiders are able to support a solid power play by having many different options.  Four different players are tied for the team lead in power play goals with 3 each: Michael Choybuk, Clifton Outlaw, Dylan Karlsson (only defenseman in the group), and Jimmy Slothface.  With 3 of the 4 being rookies, the Raiders have to hope they continue their balanced attack as the season progresses.

While the season has not gone quite the way the Lions had hoped it would for their inagural season, it is going the way that many people expected. Tied with Montreal and Halifax for last in the league at goals for at 21 and 2nd last in goals against at 28, the Lions have a couple things right there that they need to work on, mainly scoring more and not letting their opponents to score as much. Another couple areas that the Lions could work on is capitalizing on a few more power play opportunities as they are sitting second last at 10% of the power plays ending in a goal. On the other end of special teams they are once again 2nd last on the penalty kill. Successfully killing their penalties 73.68% of the time is not great, the one saving grace the have is that they are one of the least penalized teams in the league. With all this in mind, the Lions are lucky that all teams now make playoffs in the SMJHL, but hope to get some problems figured out so the are not steamrolled in the 1st round.

After going 6-3-1 in their last ten games, the Anchorage Armada are sitting at 5th in the league with 21 points, but it's a tight race, as they're a mere four points away from the top spot that was theirs mere weeks ago. The team is playing a solid two-way game, with their goals for/against percentage neatly over 100 at 117.07%, and their shots/for against first in the league at 136.71% (26% ahead of the second-place Whalers). However, we could stand to get our special teams going slightly more - especially the powerplay, which is tied for 7th in the league at 14.75% - in order to get that extra bit of offence to hopefully translate to more wins. Overall, though, with our clean game keeping us out of the box and our league-leading faceoff percentage making sure we retain possession of the puck, the Armada is in fine shape going forward this season. We'll no doubt be a force to be reckoned with come playoff time.

Currently, Montreal sits third in the SMJHL with a record of 11-5-1. The Militia have been one of the best in the league at preventing goals, a major reason for that success. Petr Vrana has been stellar in net, with a save percentage of .914 and two shutouts. Of course, the defense has been solid in front of Vrana as well, limiting opponents to 23.94 shots per game. Only Anchorage is currently allowing fewer shots against.

There is room for improvement offensively for the Militia. They are ninth in the league in shots and middle of the pack in goal scoring at 2.94 goals per game. The stellar defense has still allowed Montreal to carry one of the best goal differentials in the league at +11. Still, they would like to see more scoring, particularly on the power play, where they are converting on just 14.75% of their extra-man opportunities.

The Colorado Raptors currently sit at 10-5-2, good for 22 points on the season so far. 4th place isn't too bad, but we expect more, having the highest average TPE in the entire SMJHL. The good news is that we are only 2 points back from 1st place. We've struggled to find our groove at home so far, but having the best road record in the league at 6-2-0 is keeping us in the race for 1st place. Once we start getting going at home, I have no doubt we'll take by first place in no time.

Our defence has been incredible. We are a rare team that can put out 8 unique defenseman, all who can contribute to the team. Having a lead league 2.29 GAA proves this. Our powerplay is what we need to improve BADLY. A measly 7.84% puts us dead last, when you compare that to Vancouver's 29.17% somethings got to change.

All in all I think we're a strong contender for the cup this year. I'm expecting a long playoff run once we figure out how to play better on home ice, and fix our PP.

The Colorado Raptors sit among a pack of teams at the top with a record of 10-5-2 good for 22 points and 4th place while being 2 points out of 1st place. A reason the raptors are doing so well is their solid defense. They currently sit tied first in the league for goals against at only 2.29 goals against, a big factor to this is the big physical presence they display each game making it tough to play against them as they also lead the league in hits averaging 19.88 a game.As a result of all these hits however the raptors are 2nd in the league in Pims averaging 9.65 a game. One area where Colorado is struggling however is on the power play, they currently have the worst power play in the league at an abysmal 7.84%. The raptors are keeping pace with the top of the league right now and looking good and in order to make a deep playoff run they'll need to continue their strong defensive play while cutting down on the penalties a bit and making big improvements on their power play.

Seventeen games into the season and Vancouver is sitting pretty at tied for first in the league. That being said, one bad stretch of games can easily knock the boys to the bottom of the table, as only four points separate the top seven teams and six points separate the top eight. The stats themselves are encouraging, however. On a per game basis, the Whalers are top three team in both goals for and against. Special teams have also been very favorable, with a top-half penalty kill percentage of 83% and the league's top power play, chugging along at a 29% conversion rate. Time will tell if those gaudy power play numbers are sustainable. Another thing to keep an eye on will be Vancouver's shooting and save percentages. The team currently boasts the top shooting percentage in the league at 14.18%, but also has a bottom-three save percentage at 88.19%. One could expect both to revert to the mean to some degree, but whichever reverts more aggressively may determine the team's success or lack thereof in the coming weeks.

I currently play on the second line for the Kelowna Knights and we have been playing some decent hockey so far. Currently, we are in 5th place with a record of (11-7-1). Our team has a strong power play, second in the league at the moment at 27.94%. Our penalty kill on the other hand is abysmal, second lowest in the league at 73.68%. The season is still young, however, and there are still many games left to play and with only a few percentage points separating 9th place from 6th, there is still time for Kelowna to move up. An additional area that we need to focus on is face-offs. Kelowna once again finds themselves 2nd last in the league with 47.92%, but just like the last category, only has 4 percentage points separating them from the top 3. Lastly, we have been scoring quite a bit: we are 3rd in the league for goals for at 3.26. We still have many areas to improve on, but this team filled with rookies is going to have an impact.

The Kelowna Knights have been off to an okay start this season and currently sit in sole possession of 5th place. The battle between the top 8 teams is fierce this season, and with 4 of our last 5 victories coming from the 10th place Raiders, we may soon drop in the standings once we hit a stretch of games playing against better teams. These results were somewhat expected from the Knights, since we are a rebuilding team with a boatload of rookies on the roster. However, I expect the team to continue getting better as the season progresses and our rookies keep updating.

Here's a look at our stats: the Knights are currently 11-7-1 with 23 points. We lead the league in goals for (62) while also having the highest goals against out of the top 8 teams (56). This is somewhat expected, since the majority of our defensemen are offensively oriented. We're second in the league in powerplay percentage (27.94%) while also being second last in penalty kill percentage (73.68%). All in all, this team has a go-big-or-go-home playstyle, which I personally feel is very exciting and great for racking up our individual points. We'll definitely need to work on putting pucks in their net while keeping pucks out of our own net come playoffs, or we might not make it past the first round.

The Kelowna Knights have played right in the middle of the pack so far this season. They are currently leading the league in goals for with 62 goals, but are currently allow the 3rd most goals in the league with 56 goals against. The Knights have proved they are able to score on the powerplay with a PP% of 27.94% that is 2nd best in the league. Why are the Knights stuck at 5th in the league then? They cannot seem to get their penalty kill going with it being 73.68% which is 2nd worst in the league. The Knights will certainly have to get their PK up if they are going to have a chance at winning more games, and if they have hope of winning a playoff series as they currently sit 4th in the league for PIM/GP.
