Preview:
The Montreal Militia were riding high coming into this game, standing atop the SMJHL standings and with only 2 regulation losses in 10 games, they were the heavy favorites in this one. The Anaheim Outlaws for their part were incredibly inconsistent but were able to break a three game losing streak by beating the Lethbridge Lions the previous game. Petr Vrana for the Militia was undeafeated going into this one as well, with a 4-0-0 record and a fantastic save percentage.

First Period:
The Militia began with an all out assault, registering 6 shots on Mike Hunt before Anaheim could even blink. Eventually the Outlaws were able to respond as their top line went to work and started to pepper Petr Vrana and test out his spotless record. Vrana stood tall, however, but midway through the first the depth players for Anaheim would break through the armor of the Militia defense when Anthony Banthony made a solid screen slapshot from the point to put the Outlaws up ahead 1-0.

Goal Outlaws 1. Anaheim Outlaws , Anthony Banthony 2 (Derek Bohne 6, Hiro Fujikawa 4) at 10:04 (PP) Outlaws Goal

The Outlaws spent the next 10 minutes trapping the Militia into their game, leaving very little in the way of opportunities (the Outlaws outshot the Militia 3-1 in the final half of the period) and ending the period with the Outlaws ahead 1-0.

Score:
Outlaws 1
Militia 0
Shots for:
Outlaws 7
Militia 7

Second Period:
The second period began similarly to the way the first period ended. Montreal struggled to generate offense through the first five minutes of the game, registering a single shot on net, while the Outlaws seemed uninterested in spending time in the Militia's offensive zone at all, not even regestering a shot until the 6:36 minute mark. However the second line would show their worth yet again as that shot led to it finding the back of Montreal's net yet again.

Goal Outlaws 2. Anaheim Outlaws , Collin Gibbles 2 (Derek Bohne 7, Jaco Petermen 3) at 6:36 Outlaws Goal

Montreal from this point could not answer the depth play of the Outlaws, and for the first time this season saw some real adversity which they could not counter. The Outlaws turned up the speed and kept the puck in Montreal's zone for what seemed like an eternity. Anaheim's second line was put back on the ice and it was yet again more offensive magic as Jaco Petermen scored his first goal of the season and his juniors career from Bohne and Gibbles.

Goal Outlaws 3. Anaheim Outlaws , Jaco Petermen 1 (Derek Bohne 8, Collin Gibbles 5) at 10:54 Outlaws Goal

Down 3-0 Montreal appeared to have woken up as they finished the third with three straight shots on Mike Hunt, but it was not enough to pull them within striking distance and the period ended with the Outlaws on top 3-0

Score:
Outlaws 3
Militia 0
Shots for:
Outlaws 6
Militia 4

Third Period:

It was do or die time for the Militia early in this period, and why they failed to outright dominate Anaheim and put them on their backs early, they were able to open up the game, generating an exciting back and forth for the first five minutes. However, despite putting 5 shots on net within that span, they were unable to convert, and from there they lost all their momentum and had struggles from then on getting any kind of offense going. For the last 10 minutes they registered only 4 shots on net, all stopped by Hunt, and with that the Outlaws were able to stifle the great Montreal Militia and hand them an unexpected loss by a final score of 3-0.

Score:
Outlaws 3
Militia 0

Here's an indepth look at our three stars of the match, and no surprise, they are all from the Anaheim Outlaws!

First star center Derek Bohne led the team with 3 points and a starling 17 faceoff wins out of 29. He also racked up plenty of time on special teams.

Second star of the game was goalie Mike Hunt. Some say he should've had the first star of the matchup for his 20 save shutout victory, but what do fans know, right?

The third star is left-wing Collin Gibbles, putting up a goal and assist to push the Outlaws over the edge to victory.

Unsung heroes of the match! While goalie Mike Hunt claimed the glory for the shutout win, a big shoutout should go to the two unsung heroes of hte game, first line defensive pairing of Aaron Freakin Rome and Mathias Seger. These two defenseman put up a total of 42.47 minutes of playing time, the two highest counts in the entire game. They kept the ice in front of Hunt clean and were swift to pressure any Militia forwards encroaching in their zone. Included in that ice time were over 8 minutes of special teams play. These guys really did play some special hockey, great job defense!

Here's an indepth look at the first period powerplay goal by the Anaheim Outlaws. When Olin O'Dowd was called for goalie interference at 8:24 of the first period, Anaheim won the faceoff and a flurry of shots on goal ensued. Four Anaheim players, Hiro Fujikawa, Tye Maximino, Derek Bohne and Tye Maximino all managed to get shots that were stopped or blocked by the Militia until goalie Petr Vrana managed to cover it. The next three faceoffs consisted of both team's playing 'lets see who can ice the puck more often' until Anaheim's Hiro Fujikawa jarred the puck loose with a hit and Anthony Banthony put the puck in the net.

Comment # 1 (Other Stories of the game):

Special Teams were a story of the game. Lynxfire has already gone in detail on the first power play goal which began the Outlaws lead. On top of the powerplay conversion the Anaheim Outlaws also killed 4 penalties. The first of which came around the 19th minute of the first. The Montreal Militia failed to generate any chances before the period was up. The Milita didn't register a shot on the first power play. They would struggle the rest of the game. Another interesting story is the 3rd lines played the most 5 on 5 minutes for both teams throughout the game. This is due to the amount of special teams played by the top 6 leading to more 5 on 5 minutes for the bottom lines.

Derek Bohne settling in well in Anaheim - and taking it out on former teammates!
As the previous 1C of the Montreal Militia this was sure to be an interesting game for Bohne and boy, did he show up. Looking at the post game tally of First Star shows him racking up three assists, while also having a big presence in other parts of the game - shots, blocked shots, hits, you name it. In the face off circle he was a force to be reckoned with - winning 17/29 bouts for a FO% of 58,6%.

With that kind of stat sheet I'm sure the Anaheim coaching staff doesn't regret fielding the center just as much as they did: a whopping 20:20 TOI, only being beat out by teammates Seger and Rome. Was this Bohne's way of venting some frustration at his old teammates, or just having a bit of an inside scoop on their play? Only he knows the answer to that!

Karl's Stars

1st star - Mike Hunt Outlaws - 20 shots, 20 saves. The rookie netminder was perfect in this one and proved to be a real difference maker. This was particularly noticeable in the 3rd period when the Militia nearly doubled their shot total through the first two frames.
2nd star - Derek Bohne Outlaws - collect a bushel of apples and factoring in to all 3 Anaheim goals the sophomore center stole the show offensively. He also led the team with 4 shots on goal and performed well in the faceoff circle winning 17 of 29 draws.
3rd star - Jaco Petermen Outlaws - one of three different goal scorers Jaco also finished the night with an assist. His 2 points and +2 rating along with a single shot block earned his a respectable evening and my third star award.

Thanks for the sig ragnar!

comment #1 (team stats vs analyse)
The expansion team Anaheim Outlaws is performing surprisingly well against one of the title favorites, Montreal Militia. In the preseason the teams met each other 5 times. Anaheim won 2 of those and lost 3 (2 of those in a shootout). This was the second meeting between the two teams this season. Montreal won the first, 3-1. In all those 7 games though what is surprising, is that Anaheim scored only 1 time less (15) then Montreal (16). This confrontation ended with the best result for Anaheim so far against Montreal, 3-0. A remarkable effort by the expansion team so far and it will be interesting to see if they can hold on to this.

I think it's safe to say Mike Hunt is a bona fide starter. With his first Shutout of the year he is making a name for himself and it won't be long before SHL scouts are knocking on his door. The team gave him good support all night by converting one early on the power play and making strong defensive plays. With that said both teams were poorly disciplined tonight making up almost 18 minutes in penalties. Anaheim took up 10 of those minutes but fortunately Hunt the wonder kid showed he was the best penalty killer of the night. Also want to give a shout out for that beautiful hockey flow that Hunt has been sporting lately.

Montreal's wrecking ball.
Olin O'Dowd plays a tough game and it shows when you watch him on the ice and when you look at his stats. The 5 ft 11in tall offensive defenseman from Ireland is a real terrier on the ice. Tonight he had 2 penalties for 4 penalty minutes and 5 hits, Olin O'Dowd is not afraid of throwing his body in to the opposing team. Playing a total of 14:38 and 01:17 on the PK this rookie defenseman has the potential to become a fan favorit in montreal if he keeps hes exciting play going.

Outlaw Spotlight: Derek Bohne- Center
A recent trade between tonight teams seems to have paid off in Anaheim's favor. Derek Bohne was traded from Montreal to Anaheim with no other pieces moving. Tonight the two met to face their opposing teams and Bohne came to prove trading him was a mistake. Bohne put up 3 assists in an impressive offensive display which in turn earned him the first star of the game. Bohne also impressed on the faceoff dot, winning 17 of 29 faceoffs. In his energetic display, Bohne lead the offense as the only forward with over 20 minutes on the ice. Only time will tell who wins this trade but the Outlaws GM must be smiling now.

3 Stars in 3-0 Thumping:

Anaheims impressive display tonight netted it all 3 stars of the game in Derek Bohne(1st), Mike Hunt(2nd) and Collin Gibbles(3rd). In an impressive display, Hunt was able to starve the Montreal offense of any points on the way to his first career shutout. Bohne and Gibbles combined for 5 points against the Militia. Both forwards also contributed to the PP and PK efforts that lead their team to victory. Gibbles and Bohne have not played together much but showed instant chemistry tonight as line-mates. Most analysts picked Montreal for an easy win tonight but Anaheim's upset has shown hope for the fans. Outperforming the other expansion team in Lethbridge; Anaheim looks to be a potential post-season threat

Unsung Heros of Anaheim:

While not showing up on the scoreboard, two defensemen from Anaheim were key factors in tonight's huge win. Aaron Freakin Rome and Mattias Seger lead the D core in tonight's match with an unbridled tenacity. The two combined for 42:48 TOI and were instrumental in keeping Mike Hunt from being challenged by quality shots. The pair blocked a shot a piece further proving why they deserved to be the top pairing. Playing a shut-down game allowed Seger and Rome to control the ice and allow their teammates to focus on offense. While not getting a single shot off, their impact was felt by fans who began cheering for the pair each time they took to the ice.

Mike Hunt Slams the Door

Mike Hunt puts up an impressive performance, saving all 20 of the Montreal Militia's to finish the game with a 3-0 shutout. He did so while his team was shorthanded 4 times. He showed exceptional rebound control with only allowing 5 of the shots he faced to get away from him, freezing the other 15. He brings his season record up to 4-4 for the Outlaws, a good start for this new expansion team. After being held without a goal all game, Montreal came out in the third period hard, with all 9 of their shots occurring in the first 15 minutes of the period. Anaheim tightened up defensively afterwards, holding Montreal without a shot for the last 5:40 of the 3rd period, preserving Hunt's shutout.

Comment #1: Bohne Again (121 words)
With three assists in a 3-0 win there is no doubt that Derek Bohne is deserving of the first star of the game. He set up both of his line mates, Collin Gibbles and Jaco Petermen, as well as a third pair defenseman in Anthony Banthony. With his four shots Bohne also had the most shots in the game and could definitely have scored himself as well. Not a bad day at all for the German second line winger, who was selected 8th overall in the S45 SHL Draft by the Minnesota Chiefs. With a lot of playing time and important special team roles both on the Power Play and the Penalty Kill, this is someone to keep your eyes on.

Comment #2: Even Steven (104 words)
Despite the Anaheim Outlaws winning by 3-0 in the end, this was a really tight and even game from beginning to end. Tied in hits at 14 and plenty of penalty minutes for both teams, the Outlaws edged out the Montreal Militia with 42-40 in Faceoffs and 22-20 in shots. Maybe that's really what it takes to win some of these games, judging from tonight it sure looks that way. Nothing could really tell these teams apart besides some impressive individual performances, with Derek Bohne and Collin Gibbles stepping up to score some points, and not to forgot the spectacular shutout by Mike Hunt.

Comment #3: Goalie Battle (105 words)
Mike Hunt had gone 3-4-0 skating into this game and felt like a win was needed to not fall behind. It started off nervously as Olin O'Dowd of the Montreal Militia ran him over halfway through the first period and got called for goalie interference. For a minute or two he seemed hurt and it looked like Hunt was going to be substituted by backup goaltender Tibuk Soonika. However, he bounced back and managed to save 20 out of 20 shots. Opponent Petr Vrana looked strong in the net but was outsmarted by the Outlaws second line and recorded his first loss of the season.

With his 1st shutout of the season we have Anheim's Mike Hunt with an absolutely dominant game. His team can rest easy knowing that if they slip up Hunt will be there to soak up the saves. Such an exemplary performance is not unusual of this rookie of Anaheim. He is known for racking up shutouts and actually led all rookie goaltenders in the preseason tournament. His team has been letting him down a bit this season sitting at a mediocre .500 record, but maybe this could be the start of a great run of wins for this young Anaheim team led by their Hunt.

All 3 stars came from Anaheim this game, and how can you blame em with nothing positive to show for Montreal. Collin Gibbles put up a goal and an assist for a very solid plus2 on the game overall. With the 2nd star we have the hero of the game Mike Hunt. Personally I say any time a goalie gets a shutout its a first star, unless someone else had a hat trick. The first star of the game was Derek Bohne, who had a hattrick of assists! Ok I could see how he gets this star having setup every single one of his team's goals.

The difference in this game may come down to each teams powerplays. The Militia went a paltry 0 for 4, while Anaheim managed to convert a third of their chances. It was Anthony Banthony who scored the first goal of the game, being on the powerplay with the assist from the 1st star of the game. You could say that this goal is the one that opened up the flood gates, as Montreal was clearly demoralized at their lack of penalty killing ability and the impenetrable wall that was Mike Hunt with his shutout stopping all shots of the game in this harrowing victor

Comment 10

If there was a dominant performance that stood out to me so far this season, it would be Hunt in net. His record is reflective of the team around him, however tonight in net showed the real beast under the hood. A flawless game on 20 shots faced really set the ball in motion, as if one goalie is playing into a shutout, it is required for the other goalie to live up to that standard or they will not make it to overtime. Vrana had a decent game with a .864, however it was not enough as the opposing side finished the damage they had done.

The Insignificantly Significant Player Of The Game.
A ridiculous Wawazat award .. Awarded to the player with less than 7 minutes of ice time that actually registered something positive.
The Seventh recipient of this trivial achievement..
Is a unique one,  in that the winner is (Former) Anaheim Outlaws Right Winger  Juane Attend.
It should be noted that nowhere in the Game notes is this player listed and a check of the Outlaws roster was of no help either.
I had to Advanced Search by player name to find him. That's how I know he at least was an Outlaw signee and was a Right winger.
Anyway in an amazing :32 seconds of premium SMJHL ice time  Attend was able to register a stat line of 0 goals  0 assists and not even a shot on goal ..oh and before I forget Attend also managed 0 hits on the Montreal opposition and even more amazing Attend jumped on the ice to skate :17 seconds( of that 32 seconds) on a Anaheim Powerplay opportunity. He did manage to finish with an even 0 (+/-).
So in conclusion the seventh winner of the Insignificantly/Significant  goes to Juane Attend. On behalf of the entire research/writing staff we salute you.
