How They Got There: Steelhawks Edition
#1

Sorry had a busy week with the rookie draft and other such things in the PBE so got delayed on this series a bit; now it's time to pick things back up with the Hamilton Steelhawks as I continue down through the Eastern Conference. Hamilton seems to really be relying on a strong group of S35/36 players, so let's find out how they and the rest of the squad made their way here.

(S30) D- Ben Dover - TPE: 1286

Of course the oldest player on the team has also been with them for his entire career. Dover was drafted 13th overall by the Steelhawks, and started making good money out of the gate with a 4M contract for a season as his rookie deal. He then went on to sign one of the most team friendly deals I've ever seen - 1M per season from S31-S39 - though it was described in the signing thread as a "Doverpayment". It was changed starting S34 to meet new contract rules to a 3 season deal at 3M per year, though it was then inexplicably and I assume sarcastically declined by himself after being posted. This continued for another 3 seasons in S37, and well really just continues to this day with Dover taking HTD contracts all the way through S47 at this point.

(S33) LW - John Langabeer - TPE:999

Langabeer began his career with the West Kendall Platoon, and was selected 8th overall by the team in his draft class. From there he would sign a series of contracts with the team - some of which didn't pop up in my search, whoops - that followed some sort of progression in value, starting at 2M on his rookie deal, 3M for second deal, 4M for third deal, and 5M a season on his most recent deal with the club, S42-S44. Before the S44 part of that deal though, Langabeer was part of a sign and trade (Florence Clijsters being the one signed and traded) over to Hamilton. So he hasn't been here long, but seemed to have liked the team enough to stick around and sign an extension at 4M for this season.

(S34) G- Jimmy Wagner - TPE: 459

Wagner is a long time member of the Steelhawks, having been drafted here with the 19th overall pick in his class. Holy crap the team must've not had many players under contracts back then because he got 10M for his one season long rookie deal. That also continued for S35 and S36 on his second contract.  After S36 he's made 2M per season throughout his career, first actively signing such deals and then having them forced upon him when he stopped showing up to meetings with the head office.

(S34) D - Jakub Trocheck - TPE: 687

Jakub was the #1 overall pick by the team in S34, though was not paid at a ridiculous level like draftmate Jimmy there. Started at 4M, went up to 5M for a couple seasons, back down to 4M after that, and has now been at the 3M level for some time. Not really counted on as more than part of the third defensive pairing for the team at this point, but seems to still be around the league in some capacity.

(S35) C - Robert Phelps - TPE: 1963
(S35) LW - Angelo Odjick - TPE: 1368

These two linemates were the team's first and second overall picks in this draft, and have paid off big time for the club. The two have played together since their SMJHL days with the Whalers at this point. Phelps has been pretty easy on the budget and the need for posting new contracts for the team. He made 1M his first 2 seasons, 2M for the next 2, and then signed a 4M per season deal starting in S39 that has yet to end. Odjick followed basically the same path, though his second contract at the 2M level lasted 3 seasons, and his current deal will go an extra season at 4M through S47.

(S36) D - Sami Owens - TPE: 1409

Sami was part of a big draft class for the team, and was the 9th player selected in the draft. He signed for 3M per season for 3 years on his rookie deal before getting 10M split approximately evenly (one additional dollar in S41) over the next 3 seasons. His somewhat odd contract values continued in S42 and 43 with 4.13M paid to him per season (I don't get it), and the current deal ends this season with him making 5M.

(S36) RW - Vijanupatan Singh - TPE: 1347

Pretty amazing for someone on their team's first line to have originally been a 4th round pick. Taken 43rd overall by the Winnipeg Jets, Singh signed for 3M per season for his first 3 seasons. His next 3 season deal averaged out to 4M per season by going 4.5/4/3.5, then he took something of a discount on a 2 year deal at 3M/3.5M. During this contract was when he came over to the Steelhawks, as he and a 2nd rounder were sent here in exchange for Connor Blackwell. After the trade Singh decided to stick around, signing a 3 season deal extending through S46 for 5M per.

(S36) D - Dwayne Wyder - TPE: 663

Wyder was taken 7th overall by the team, but hasn't worked out quite as well as some of the players taken after him. He started on a pretty common rookie deal of 3M per season for 3 seasons, and his team seems to have spelled his name wrong on his second contract because the next result that came up was S42. He had taken a paycut by that point down to 2M per season and has continued with that trend, and is now linemates with Jakub who had a similar story and now similar TPE.

(S36) LW - Chuck Bernstein - TPE: 226

Originally drafted and signed by the Rage late in the draft at 47 overall, right before Hamilton passed completely. He was already inactive at the time, and wasn't needed by the Rage for long, as he was out on the street after a couple seasons. Hamilton has been using him as cheap roster filler ever since. It ain't much but it's honest work.

(S36) D - Nour Harrak - TPE: 1174

After Minnesota traded for the first overall pick in this draft there was talk that Nour would be their pick. He ended up lasting all the way to the 2nd pick instead, where Hamilton happily snapped him up. Currently on the 2nd line with the team but plays the same minutes as the first line anyways. He made 3M for all of his first 6 seasons, then got bumped up to 4M for S7 and 4.5M all the way through S47, with no trade clauses until the final year of that deal.

(S36) LW - Alexander Zajac - TPE: 1,186

Another find from the back end of this draft, Zajac was taken by the Seattle Riot at 44th overall, right behind Singh. He was given a 2M per season rookie deal for 2 seasons, then extended for a total of 10M across 3 seasons after that. Alex's next deal brought in 4M per season from S41 to S43, but not really because he had it restructured down to 3M per season after S41. He extended for another season at 4M, and then signed a 4M per season deal for 3 seasons as part of a big sign and trade. Hamilton received him and a first round pick, though had to give up their 5th overall pick from the same draft, Oliver Konig.

(S38) RW - Dick Skillstedt - TPE: 1348

With a 3rd overall draft pick that was traded between a total of 4 different teams, Dick was snagged by Minnesota and given a fat rookie deal of 6M for a season. He extended with a much cheaper 2M per season contract for 2 seasons after that. Made a bit more from S41 to S43 with a raise to 3.5M per season. During that contract, he was shipped off to Hamilton here, as they acquired him and a 2nd rounder for Noro Wozy. He then extended long term with the Steelhawks, for 4M per season through S49.

(S39) LW - Baron O'Beefdip - TPE: 264

Man I always wanted Baron to be awesome in the SHL with that player name, but it wasn't meant to be. Then again he was the 70th overall pick in his draft class after a lot of teams had passed so not like this wasn't expected. He was actually given a solid contract by the team, making 2M for his first 3 seasons. Hamilton made a move for him and Samee Iqbal during this initial contract, giving up a 2nd rounder. He's been on 500k per season cheap deals ever since.

(S42) G - Geezus Kryyst - TPE: 849

The team has something of a lack of players from S39 to S41 that is kinda disturbing, but Geezus is here to break that before it extended to a fourth season of drought. He was the team's first rounder at 11th overall, and made 1.5M a season on his first 2 season contract. As an active and quickly progressing goalie he's commanded a fair chunk of change since, with 6M in S44 and 5M in S45.

(S42) RW - Ēriks Skalbergs - TPE: 610

With a pick in the same draft as Geezus that was acquired from NEW, Hamilton took Skalbergs at 6th overall. He made 2M in his first season, 1.5M in his second, and 3M the last 2. Sadly his progression seems to have stagnated at this point.

(S42) RW - Vladimir Vaskov - TPE: 388

Vaskov is the only other remaining player from Hamilton's S42 class, having been taken 25th overall after a few other players no longer with the team. He is no longer putting in the work and just filler for the team despite some early investment of 1M per season into him.

(S43) Defense - Tig Murphy - TPE: 729
(S43) Right Wing - Andrew Martin - TPE: 632

Taken 4th and 17th overall by the team in this draft, the pair is now making their league debuts together. Both are continuing to progress well for the team, and have had identical contracts: 3M in rookie season, 2M in season 2, and 3M through S46.

(S43) Right Wing - Dank Boija - TPE: 629

Now linemates with Martin and at about the same TPE level, Boija was originally not particularly sought after as the 46th overall pick of his draft by Toronto. He signed a 2.5M per season deal with the club for 3 seasons at the time, but didn't last that long with the team. Instead, he was dealt to Hamilton in a big trade for star defenseman Finn Kruger, bringing a reddit 2nd rounder along with him. Looks to be a strong future-oriented move for the club at this point.

This is a club that relied on the draft, like the two before them. They've also made some big trades to bring in talent old and new. Seriously though does anyone leave a team for free agency here?
