PGS S45 Game 93: HAL v ANA
#1

Welcome to Game 93 of the 45th Season of the SMJHL

     HALIFAX Raiders v ANAHEIM Outlaws
    raiders v Outlaws

Game 93 of Season 45 saw the Anaheim Outlaws host the Halifax Raiders in a cross-continent trip for the Canadian team. The Raiders were chasing a second win of the season after beating Detroit the week before. Anaheim were looking to an improve on an already impressive expansion season, outperforming fellow expandees Lethbridge.

 1st Period
The first period was an eventful one in some words. It was kicked off with an early goal from Clifton Outlaw, who's been having an impressive rookie season which the Raiders definitely need right now. The first penalty of the match went to Aaron Freaking Rome for cross-checking. Aaron Freaking Rome (that is actually his name) roamed his way into the penalty box. The Californian team killed off the freaking penalty pretty well, and before long had their first goal on the board courtesy of Jerry Mander, who escaped their own zone with Hiro Fujikawa for an unstoppable 2 on 1 goal. Another penalty to Anaheim a minute later for a nasty high stick which caught Montgomery in the chin. The power play for the Raiders went as well as the first and didn't prove fruitful. Fujikawa put up his own goal after assisting the first, making the score 9-1 and  putting up his 9th point of the season. Halifax's first penalty came from Montgomery and a questionable hooking call from the linesman. It left the Raiders with a 3-1 deficit. As the period came to a close, McKorsy got a little stick happy trying to clear the puck, and ended up with a slashing call against him, which was served by Troy Reynolds, much to the delight of the Gazette. The penalty actually proved to be a blessing as Desmond Carey puts away Halifax's first short handed goal of the season, and also his first point. The goal was officially noted at 19:59, meaning a much needed lucky break for the Raiders.

Goals
Clifton Outlaw (HAL) 2:14 - Assisted by Andrej Doskocil, Touncie Bitties
Jerry Mander (ANA) 8:30 - Assisted by Hiro Fujikawa
Hiro Fujikawa (ANA) 14:00 - Assisted by Osbert Whacker
Tye Maximino (ANA) 16:38 - Assisted by Derek Bohne, Jaco Petermen (PP)
Desmond Carey (HAL) 19:59 - Assisted by Rainbow Dash (SH)

2nd Period
The second period was almost the polar opposite to the first, with no goals taking place, and the only score board worthy event going to Seger, for a slashing minor with 30 seconds to go. The action didn't stop however, with 5 more shots than the first period.

Goals
None

3rd Period
With a minute thirty left on the Halifax power play, they kicked off the third period with a heavy start against the Outlaws. Anaheim killed the rest of the penalty but soon gave up another one after a slashing call against Banthony. The Raiders finally took advantage of a power play, making quick work and scoring just 10 seconds in to the man advantage, which was lead from the front by captain Dominic Montgomery. The goal made the game a tied game with most of the period still left. The tie didn't last long however, as Maximino scored his second goal, and the final goal of the night to seal Halifax's fate for a 4-3 loss.

Goals
Dominic Montgomery (HAL) 1:55 - Assisted by Mr. Faceoffs, Mikael Choybuk (PP)
Tye Maximino (ANA) 7:07 - Assisted by Uvis Zommers

Three Stars
1) Tye Maximino  Outlaws  2G, GW, +/-1
2) Hiro Fujikawa  Outlaws  2P, +/-2
3) Jerry Mander  Outlaws  1G, 20:51 TOI

Game 93 Simweek 4 Halifax Raiders @ Anaheim Outlaws

Mike McKorsy was like many games before not happy about his performance. Four goals against and another loss was not what the goalie had in mind when he travelled with the team to the near of Disneyland. The start of the games look like a problem for the young german goalkeeper. In this game he received again three tallies in the first period. Frustrated later in the game McKorsy took a Slashing Penalty which was served by Troy Reynolds. Maybe some luck, Halifax scored a short handet goal in this Penalty Killing. At the end the Outlaws won 4-3.

Comment 1: Special teams

This game saw quite a few penalties called. More specifically, it's 4 on Halifax, and 5 on Anaheim. Both teams used one of their powerplay chances, which thanks to how math works favours Anaheim as the more efficient team. However, what we haven't accounted for, is the shorthanded goal from Halifax. Everything about this goal is weird. Scored a mere second before the end of first, and a first goal of Desmond Carey for the season, a player that only rarely sees ice time, and had just shy of 3 minutes in this game aswell. It hasn't helped Halifax gain anything come second period, but this goal kept the game close and would have been for sure the turning point if Halifax Raiders were to pull a victory out of jaws of defeat.

Comment 2: Exciting game

Nothing better than a close hockey game, right? These two teams have played the closest game they probably could. All the stats are almost the same, Anaheim managed to only win by one after being tied by Raiders early in third. There was plenty of hits, plenty of shots, plenty of goals to go around and entertain you. This has to simply be one of the better games played this week, even if we are looking at where these teams are in the standings, more specifically aiming at Halifax here. Anaheim has to be glad to take the close game after a bit of a scare from the surging Raiders, and for Raiders, it's a dissapointment when another game they could have won goes the way of the opponent.

Comment 3: Ice time for you, ice time for you, ice time for everyone!

An interesting thing to watch is how equally or unequally ice time is distributed across these two rosters. While Anaheim has 6 players with 20+ minutes, Halifax only has 4 of them. Plus, if you look at players with sub 10 minutes, Anaheim's 2 players are way better than Halifax's 5. So, can we say that Anaheim is more equal with their ice time? Absolutely. The players over 20 minutes are very often barely over, and a lot of their roster sees some healthy time, while Halifax that does really heavily on rookies, has a lot of ice time thrown at the few veterans they have on ice. If that's any good, we can probably see that both in the standings and this game aswell. It's never too good to overplay your top guys, and it's not quite the greatest idea to not give the rookies much of ice time, because you can't see any development that way.

Comment 1 (Excellent Losing Effort):

With such a close game it is hard to make the 3 stars. Missing the 3 stars was; Halifax Raiders, 2nd line, left winger, Rainbow Dash. Dash had a steady game rarely making any mistakes. Despite only being on the PK for 25 seconds, Dash read a beautiful interception play by Desmond Carey in the offensive zone with seconds to go in the 1st. Desmond passed it off to Dash who with mountains of poise dished it softly back for the tap in goal at 19:59. Dash played 20:11 of the game with 3:15 of power play time. Dash ended up a +2 while many of his teammates were in the negatives. He had 4 shots on goal, 2 hits and drove play for Raiders.

The Insignificantly Significant Player Of The Game .
A  ridiculous Wawazat award .. Awarded to the player  with less than 7 minutes of ice time that actually registered something positive.
The Fourth recipient of this trivial achievement..
Halifax Raiders Defenceman  Demond Carey .
Desmond Carey a player who epitomizes the Insignificantly Significant. A player who isn't even listed as occupying space on a single Halifax line listed in the Game Notes yet took advantage of  2:50  of premium ice time which included 34 precious seconds of Powerplay time and 1:25 of effective Penalty Kill time during which Desmond Carey SCORED. Yes, Desmond Carey scored his 1st goal of S45 SHORT HANDED at 19:59 of the First Period. Carey's stat line for this game 2 shots on goal and 1of those 2 being that Shorty goal and he finished this contest with a +1(+/-).
This is the Exact Type Of Insignificantly Significant activity that this Wawazat award was created to recognize. So Congratulations to you Desmond Carey for this spotlight moment.

Interview with Dominic Montgomery
Can you walk me through your thoughts during your game-tying goal?
We were ready in the third, and I thought Faceoffs' shot would go in, but I saw it about to hit the post. I tried to put myself where the puck would go and it worked out how we wanted it to. It was good to tie it up early, but unfortunately, we didn't get the two points.

Where did things go wrong for you today?
I needed to have better control of the puck and shouldn't have given them more chances to score on the penalty. My shot needs more work, and we didn't give Korsy the help he deserved. There are some things I need to personally work on and the team, too.

Can you speak a little to Desmond Carey's short-handed goal?
Yeah, Dezzy will surprise you. Before the game, he said he was going to score and we were joking about it, but he was right. We definitely needed that boost before the end of the first.

Outlaw Irony
Clifton Outlaw, right winger for the Halifax Raiders, opened the game with a goal just over two minutes into the first period. Unfortunately, the Anaheim Outlaws immediately showed Outlaw what they thought of his audacity to have a name so similar to their team's and to score a goal against them by scoring three goals in quick succession in the same period. Desmond Carey's short-handed goal in the last second of the period proved that the Raiders wouldn't go down without a bit of a fight, but as for Outlaw... he must have been suitably chastened, as he didn't do anything with the rest of his ice time in this game.

Goalie Matchup
In this one-goal game, like most one-goal games, the performances of the goalies were crucial. While things started off badly for both the Raiders' Mike McKorsy (three goals against) and the Outlaws' Mike Hunt (two goals against) in the first, they both returned to the game steadfast in the second, allowing no goals - which, of course, fell apart, with a goal apiece against in the third period. Their save percentage was similar - 0.892 for McKorsy with 33 saves on 37 shots, and 0.897 for Hunt with 26 saves on 29 shots. Shots taken into consideration, it could be argued that McKorsy slightly outperformed Hunt, but considering he added another unfortunate loss to his team's frankly abysmal win-loss record, Hunt definitely ran away with this win.

Comment 12

Mike McKorsy take a bow. If there was ever a game that the final outcome was decided by a single act of larceny, it would be next to the name of McKorsy. the final number is not representative of the product on the ice, as McKorsy put up a measly .892. That's right, in the SMJHL, he had a stellar night, but also had a save in the middle of the game that seemed to be the bastion that the wave of Outlaws broke on. Execpt they didn't, as Hunt did even BETTER. A goalie duel of the ages, which was quiet refreshing in todays age. Hunt won the battle, but the war is heating up!

Comment 1: Outlaw Spotlight - Hiro Fujikawa - Right Wing
Anaheim's captain Hiro Fujikawa lives up to his role in the Anaheim Outlaws 4-3 win over the Halifax Raiders tonight. Fujikawa notched an assist on Jerry Mander's first period goal before scoring his own later in the period. This lead to a 2 point night for Fujikawa who ended the night with a +2 in plus/minus. The captain lead his team in ice time tonight with 21:52 spent on ice. Hiro received 2nd star for his efforts in front of the home crowd. Fujikawa also spent over a third of his time on special teams tonight totaling over 7.5 minutes.

Comment 2: Outlaws Raid Raiders
The Anaheim Outlaws hosted the Halifax Raiders in tonight's SMJHL contest. It was a rough game between the two teams as they jockey for position in the standings. The Outlaws would prove victorious tonight as they vanquished the Raiders 4-3 in regulation. Both teams penalty kill were hard at work only allowing a single powerplay goal from each team. Anaheim had 5 attempts on the powerplay while Halifax had 4 chances. The faceoff race was narrowly won by the Outlaws with 43 to Halifax's 42. Halifax answered back in blocked shots barely edging out Anaheim 9-8. Anaheim was awarded all 3 stars of the game for their impressive play.
