GAME 94 PGS

Final Score
Knights 4  Militia 5 (SO)

Militia
Shootout win

1st Period

The first period was an eventful one. Kelowna dominated play early scoring 2 goals in the opening 10 minutes. Montreal still got a fair bit of zone time, but could not capitalize on their chances until a deflection goal by Montreals Andreas Kvalheim off a shot by Olin O’Dowd. That gave the Militia the momentum, and with Knights Scott Niedermayer Jr. taking a high sticking minor 20 seconds after Montreal's first goal the game was soon to be tied. The Knights were able to hold off Montreal's attack on the powerplay for 1:16 seconds, but Montreal's Willy Mack was able to get a shot past Knights goaltender Vivian Leblanc to tie the game at 2. Kelowna responded back with pressure, but Montreal was able to deny their zone entry attempts. After the Knights iced the puck, and lost the ensuing face-off Militia Nikolai Evans took an offensive zone high sticking minor to send the Knights onto the powerplay. The Knights league leading powerplay went to work, and was able to get the go ahead goal just 21 seconds after the face-off in Montreal's zone.  The rest of the first period would play out with back and forth action with Montreal able to pepper the Knights goaltender with shots, but the Knights would go into the 1st intermission with the lead.

2nd Period

The second period was more quite than the first, but still had plenty of action. Montreal started off testing Leblanc with some quick shots in the first 2 minutes, but Kelowna responded with some sustained offensive zone time, but missed the net 3 times in a row. The Knights kept on the pressure forcing Montreal to ice it, and at the 4:12 mark of the second Hank O’Callahan lays a big hit on Nickolas Klaus in Montreal's one, but Klaus responds 15 seconds later by putting a shot past Petr Vrana to give the Knights a 2 goal lead. This would be the end of the night for Vrana being replaced by Aleksi O’Koivu-Volkava, much to the play by play announcers annoyance. O’Koivu-Volkava would get tested early, but would hold off the Knights pressure making some key saves to give Montreal life. The teams would trade chances for the rest of the period, but no one would get another tally.

3rd Period

The third period started with more pressure from the Knights, who aren’t looking like they will turtle. Coming out strong for the first 4 minutes of the 3rd, and continuing to test Aleksi O'Koivu-Volkova with some tough shots. It was all Kelowna, and the Militia’s frustrations started showing as Chuck Crutchfield tied up Bobby Sharp in the Knights zone. Sharp took exception to this and gave Crutchfield a wack with his stick. Both players would receive minors for tripping, and slashing respectively. The Knights would continue to get quality chances, but Aleksi O'Koivu-Volkova was equal to the test, keeping Montreal in the game. Chuck Crutchfield would finally get a tally for Montreal at 12:16 of the 3rd, and that seemed to give the Militia a breathe of fresh air. Montreal started to take control of the play, and started really pushing in the last 5 minutes for the tying goal. With Knights Big Fudge taking a hooking minor at 18:30 of the 3rd it was time for Kelowna's PK to really be tested. The Knights PK unit, especially Leblanc would hold them off until the final 30 seconds of the game. Montreal pulled Aleksi O'Koivu-Volkova at 19:23 of the 3rd period, after Montreal exited their zone from a face-off. The extra attacker would make it a 6 on 4, and at 19:43 a shot from Willie Fisterbottom would beat Vivian Leblanc, and this game would be going into overtime.

Overtime
In overtime both teams traded chances, with the overtime period playing out like a chess match. Both teams were defensively solid with blocking shots, and shutting down chances. The first shot on net came after and Icing by Militia’s Griffith Cadwalader, but Aleksi O’Koivu-Volkova stopped it easily leaving no rebound. Montreal would then advance the puck into the Knights zone after a face-off win, and get a shot, but Vivian Leblanc gobbled up the puck. Montreal would then get another chance , but same story as Leblanc would leave no rebound. The best chance came at 4:16 as a shot from Knights Nickolas Klaus would be deflected by Nathan Explosion, but Militia’s netminder would remain unbeatable sending this game to a shootout.

Shootout

Knights Karlstrabe Scholz would take the first shot, and O’Koivu-Volkova would stop his deke.

Montreals Keegan Angelo would take the Militia’s first chance, and Vivian Leblanc would stop his quick wrister.

Next up for the Knights was Vladislav Konstantin, and again Aleksi would stone him with quick lateral movement after a forehand-backhand deke.

Next up for the Militia is Willy Mack. He came fast down the center, and with a fake shot got Vivian Leblanc sliding to the wrong side, and put it in.

GOAL! Knights 0 :Militia: 1

Now it was time for Nickolas Klaus to try and keep the Knights in it. He came in with speed, and tried to get Aleski to bite on his fake shot, but Militia’s goaltender would remain with him and caught his backhand with the glove to give the Montreal Militia the win

Game Turning point

Even though Aleksi O'Koivu-Volkova did not get a star. The netminder was the changing point for the Militia. Comment #1: 1st Impression (107 words)
The Kelowna Knights came flying out of the gate in this one, scoring twice in the first 6:06 minutes of the first period. Two and a half minutes later it was all tied up with two fast goals by the Montreal Militia, before the Knights scored again to make it 3-2 after only 10:32 into the game. The coaches were scratching their heads and trying to calm everything down but the fans were loving it!  One interesting fact is that these initial 14 points were made by no less than 13 players, Willy Mack being the only one to put up both a goal and an assist.

Comment #2: Big Fudge! (109 words)
The Knights and Nickolaus Klaus started off the second period by making it 4-2 and things were looking down for the Militia. The coach took a time out but nothing really happened for the next 25 minutes. Enter Big Fudge... halfway through the third he got called for a cross checking and the Militia managed to score on the Power Play. With a minute and a half left of the game Fudge got called again, this time for hooking, and this time the Militia was able to tie the game with 17 seconds left on the clock. The coach and fans alike were furious and things went into overtime.

Comment #3: Aleksi O'Wait What? (113 words)
After the 3-2 goal Petr Vrana was called from the game after only saving 7 out of 11 shots. Enter Aleksi O'Koivu-Volkova and that was the complete game changer. After entering the game halfway through the Russian goaltender saved 15 out of 15 shots and 3 out of 3 penalty shots in the shootout to make the pickup complete and give the Militia the most saisfying win of the season so far. If this is how O'Koivu-Volkova acts when he gets subbed in maybe that's what he should do more often. It's definitely a goalie to look out for in the future and don't forget that he's eligible for the S46 SHL Draft.

Comment One:
Glutes Media's Three Stars of the Game
Note: These stars may be different from those determined by the sim.

First Star: Nickolas Klaus (KEL)
Klaus delivered two crucial goals this game to give the Knights a substantial lead going into the third. However, Klaus giveth and Klaus taketh away as he missed the final penalty shot and ultimately lost Kelowna the game.

Second Star: Willy Mack (MTL)
Willy Mack made some crucial plays in the first period to keep Montreal in the game. A goal and an assist, along with 4 shots and an important blocked shot secured this second line winger the second star.

Third Star: Olin O'Dowd (MTL)
The rookie third-pairing defenseman had an impressive showing this game, racking up two key primary assists -- one to open up scoring for MTL, and one to tie the game and force overtime.

Comment Two:
Turning Point of the Game: 18:30 of 3rd period - Minor Penalty to Big Fudge for Hooking
This was the key mistake that led to an eventual Montreal comeback. With only 1:30 left in the game, the Knights held a one goal lead and was trading blows offensively with the Militia. This play was largely unnecessary, but it's important to note that the fourth line forwards of Kelowna were pinned in their zone against the second line and first pairing of Montreal. Perhaps the Militia would have scored regardless because of the discrepancy in skill between the players on the ice. Some blame can be placed on the Knights coaches for this one, for not only failing to reel in an emotional player in Big Fudge in the final few minutes of the game, but also allowing the Knights to be outmatched on the ice while protecting a small lead in the dying moments of the game.

Comment Three:
Rookie Watch: Guy Zheng
Rookie sensation Guy Zheng, currently leading all rookies in points, has taken the SMJHL by storm. In particular, this game shows that even when Zheng is unable to produce offensively in a given game, he recognizes his defensive responsibilities and is able to bring his A-game to protect his team's lead when needed. The defenseman posted a monstrous 4 hits and 3 shots blocked, and played for a total of 2:46 minutes on the penalty kill. Though offense is still his strong suit, Zheng shows that he is no slouch defensively. We'll continue keeping a close eye on Zheng as he tears up the junior league.

S45 Game 94 SimWeek 4 Kelowna Knights @ Montreal Militia

Aleksi O'Koivu-Volkova showed a stellar performance as a backup in front of the homecrowd from the Montreal Militia. She took over from Petr Vrana after the starter gets 4 goals on 11 shots / Sv%0,636. In regular and overtime O'Koivu stopped all 15 Shots on her net and after that she saved all 3 of the Knights penalty shots in the Shootout. It’s a secret of the Experts how she couldn’t be on the 3 Stars of the game. Vivian Leblanc (Kelowna) had an immediate game with 31 saves an 35 shots. She could only stop 1 Penalty in the ShootOut.

COMMENT ONE: How The Fudge Does This Happen?

-While Big Fudge did contribute a bit on the defensive end (and somehow ended the game with a plus/minus of 1), he ultimately has to take more than his share of the blame for the loss. His two undisciplined penalties in the 3rd period proved backbreaking for the Knights, and they gave up both powerplay goals to tie the game and spoil a decent outing from netminder Vivian Leblanc. Big Fudge didn't have the pedigree of a particularly undisciplined player coming into the Draft, but has been among the glut of players trailing the Knights enforcer David Vent for the team lead in penalty minutes. Big Fudge has to tighten up his play, cause moments like these could take away more points from the Knights, and take away a good SHL draft position this summer......

COMMENT TWO: O'Koivu-Volkana Does O'K In Relief

-Petr Vrana had a surprisingly poor outing today, and got pulled after a soft goal from Nickolas Klaus just under 5 minutes through the 2nd period. Luckily backup Aleksi O'Koivu-Volkana cleaned up the mess afterwards and did yeoman's work in relief, recording 15 saves and making key stops in the shootout to preserve the win for the Militia. Aleksi's had an up and down year as the backup to the normally reliable Vrana, but looked the part of an All-Star here, suppressing the rolling Knights forward core when it mattered most. The pick of the saves was in the shootout against Vladislav Konstantin, with a quick save on a forehand-to-backhand move.

Comment one - shootout analysis
After 3 periods the game was tied at 4-4 and since either team didn't score in OT a shootout was required. Goalies Vivian Leblanc of the Knights and Aleksi O'Koivu were up to the task to pull out an extra point for their team.

Round 1
Knights Karlstraße Schol: Scholz moved slowly towards O'Koivu and tried to shoot it in the top left corner, but his shot was stopped.
Militia Keegan Angelo: Angelo picked up a lot of speed, tried the fake and go five hole, but Leblanc had none of that.

Round 2
Knights Vladislav Konstantin: Konstantin went really wide on the right side, cut towards the middle, but was poke checked by O'Koivu.
Militia Willy Mack: Mack raced towards the goal, did two fakes and tips it in. Goal for Militia.

Round 3
Knights Nickolas Klaus: Klaus skated towards the net quite slowly waiting for O'koivu to give up some space, but O'koivu had none of that and keeps his sheet clean.

Montreal Militia wins it in the shootout.

Comment two - Nickolas Klaus league leader in points
Nickolas Klaus is league leader in the SMJHL in points and assists. Though in this game against the Militia the Kelowna Knights forward scored 2 goals in a 4-5 shootout loss. Klaus had an opportunity to score an unofficial hattrick, but was denied by O'Koivu in the shootout. Klaus opened the score early in the first period only 4 minutes into the game. He was assisted by the Knights captain Sanyi Kocsis and wristed it in blocker side on Petr Vrana. His second goal came also close to the 4 minute mark at 4:27. Against assisted by Sanyi Kocsis and Karlstraße Scholz. The goal that send Petr Vrana to the bench to be replaced by Aleksi O'Koivu, a turning point in the game. I wonder if Klaus will top the list in points at the end of the season.

First Star - Nickolas Klaus (KEL)
Kelowna in the end lost this game 5-4 in a shootout but Klaus managed to score 2 goals and in addition went 16/31 in the face-off circle. He opened up the scoring for Kelowna 4 minutes into the game and scored the lone Kelowna goal in the second period.

Second Star - Willy Mack (MTL)
Willy Mack without a doubt deserves to be a star in this game as he scored in the first period to tie the game up 2-2. More importantly than that goal, however, he was the lone scorer in shootout tonight, giving Montreal the win.

Third Star - Andreas Kvalheim (MTL)
Kvalheim was tonight's third star of the game. Not to say it was undeserved, but I believe there to be a few players that could have had this honour over him. Regardless, Montreal was down by 2, 6 minutes into the game, and he managed to stop it from becoming a blowout by scoring just a minute later. He bought momentum back towards Montreal's favour and helped them win the game.

Andreas Kvalheim goal early in the first period was tonight's turning point of the game. Kelowna scored their first just 4 minutes into the game, and tallied another one only 2 minutes after that. Kvalheim managed to cut the lead in half just over a minute after the game became 2-0, swinging momentum into Montreal's favour where they scored to tie the game up 2-2 just a minute after that. Kelowna scored again 2 minutes later to take the lead again 3-2. Without Kvalheim's goal early in the first, the game may have ended up out of control heading towards a blowout in Kelowna's favour.

Special teams managed to see a lot of action tonight with Kelowna seeing the man advantage 3 times and Montreal 5. Kelowna is top in the league in power play so it is no surprise to see them go 1/3 with the advantage. Unfortunately for them, their penalty kill is lacking and it is clear to see that after this game. Montreal scored 3 of their 5 goals on the power play, which evidently was a big reason for why Kelowna lost. Kelowna is currently 8th in the league for penalty kill and they really need to improve that in order to make a big impression in the playoffs.

Comment #1 Montreal Goalies:

Montreal goalies this game could be described in 2 words; Hot and Cold. First off, Petr Vrana started the game and was sent to the showers after only 24 minutes of play. He managed to let in 4 goals in 11 shots allowing Knights to take a 2 goal lead being 4-2 when he was chased from the game. Vrana had previously known a solid game against Kelowna during week 2's PGS, we can't say this much this time. However, his teamate Aleksi O'Koivu-Volkova came in hot stopping all 15 shots received during the remaining time and the overtime period and then stopping all 3 shoutoot attempts made against him. We can basically say he saved Montreal from an embarassing loss and earning them a spectacular win.

Comment #2 Kelowna's Third line:

Knights are used to having a solid performance from their top 6 forwards. However, the third line of Barry Batsbak, Nathan Explosion and Zach Laliberté managed to contribute positively to the team effort, especially in the first period as they assembled to score a goal. The line managed to keep a neutral +/-, an important stat for a third line and had 4 scoring chances as a whole. The line could help contribute more physically as they only recorded 1 hit. usually, the checking line manages a bit more hits but Montreal played a fast game and big hits were scarce.

Comment #3 Shootout:

This game led to a rare occurence in the SMJHL this year so far, shootouts. Fans were already on the edge of their seats as Montreal came back froma 4-2 deficit allowed by starting goaltender Vrana and were confident in O'koivu-Volkova's after a solid relief performance.

The first shot was taken by Karlstrabe Scholz who tried a big slapshot, easily blocked by Vrana.

Next  shot by Montreal was Keegan Angelo who also went for the big old slapper. Easily stopped by Leblanc as well

We had to wait until 3rd shot for a little creativity, Vladislav Konstantin went for a spinorama in front of the goalie but Montreal's goalie spread his pads all the way to the post to keep the puck out of the net.

Next up was Miltia winger, Willie Mack. He stole the show going for a baseball swing after sending his puck up in the air. He scoredon Leblanc who was surprised of his feint. This would be the winning goal.

Nickolas Klaus tried to keep his team alive but was stopped easily after a nice wristshot.

Comment #1: Prospect Watch: Kristoffer Svensson
Game 94 of the S45 SMJHL season was not a happy affair for our subject - other than the team eventually managing to close it out in the shootout, there weren't many upsides for the young Swede. The offense wasn't clicking for the 3rd line, and he managed to pull another minor penalty. These minors are starting to become a trend for the center, and something he needs to rectify sooner rather than later. On top of this he was on the ice for two of the goals against, something that isn't that usual for Svensson. While the offense hasn't been his strong suit this season, he tends to be strong on the defensive side of things, so the hope is that this was more of a lapse in performance level.

Comment #2: Backup goalie bringing the heat!
Montreal start to the game wasn't a fortuitous one - while they were holding the shots lead quite comfortably it seemed that tender Petr Vrana was having a rare off night. At the beginning of the second period he had seens 4 out of 11 pucks pass him which needless to say is way below his usual performance level. The coaching staff saw fit at this time to put in backup goaltender Aleksi O'Koivu-Volkova - they might as well have built a brick wall between the pipes. Through 40 minutes of play and a shootout to top it off, the backup tender completely killed off all offensive attempts from Kelowna.

Comment #3: Spotlight shines on Nick Klaus, and he seems to be enjoying it!
Kelowna center Nickolaus Klaus performance cannot be overstated - both in the game at hand and in the season as a whole. At the time of writing the center is the league leader in points at 61 (20G 41A) and with a whopping 19 point lead of the next center in line, Anaheim's Derek Bohne. The shooting machine showed up in this game versus Montreal as well, answering for 7 shots on target of which 2 found their way into the back of the net. This is the kind of performance that we've come to expect from the young center, as he has proved himself all season to be more than capable. On top of this, he's no slouch in the faceoff circle, and we don't really see any defensive lapses from him either. How far can he go?

Comment #1 (Shootout thriller) 107 words

After three periods the game was tied at 4-4. It was an overall high scoring affair as both Vivian Leblanc and Petr Vrana got lit up. Vrana was actually pulled early on which led to the comeback win with AKV backstopping them to a shutout the remainder of the game. In the shootout no one managed to score on either goalie other than the WIlly Mack of Montreal! He put the goal home with the last shot of the shootout and they won. This credited AKV with the win, quite the accomplishment coming in as a relief G down 3 and winning the game.

The third star of the game comes from the winning team Montreal Militia, Andreas Kvalheim. He contributed to his team's win with a goal on a whopping 8 shots on net. Not a great shooting percentage but I'm sure his team used those rebounds. The 2nd star of this game was Willy Mack who scored the deciding goal on the opposing team's netminder during the shootout after overtime. With the first star of the game we have a player from the losing team. Nickolas Klaus was only one goal away from a hat trick, contributing to his team's win with a whopping 2 goals.

Comment #3 (special teams) 107 words

The highlight of this game was each team's atrocious penalty kill, and each team's great powerplay! The Kelowna Knights scored on 2 of their 5 opportunities, chasing Montreal's starting goaltender Petr Vrana out of the net. His relief willed them to a win with no goals against. Montreal really came back because of their use of the powerplay. Montreal managed to score on 3 out of their 5 opportunities. With such a deadly powerplay they made up for lack of defense, but this is not a power play rate that can be sustained throughout an entire season. We look forward to seeing if that can continue

Special Teams Not Special for the Knights
Coming into this game the Knights were one of the better combined special teams, with a stellar powerplay and an average penalty kill. Tonight they took far too many penalties, giving Montreal 5 powerplays, and giving up 3 goals on them. The real dagger however is the 4-2 lead they took going into the third period evaportated due to two of those powerplay goals, letting Montreal back into the game. The Knights did manage to score a powerplay goal of their own, but the timing of the ones they gave up swung the momentum in Montreal's favor in a huge way, and ultimately is why the Knights walked away from this game with a shootout loss rather than a regulation win.

Goalie Change Sparks the Militia
After a rocky start in the first period where three goals found their way past Petr Vrana, the fourth goal only a few minutes into the second period sparked a change. Petr Vrana gave up 4 goals on 11 shots, while Aleksi O'Koivu-Volkova came in and proceeded to stop 15 of the 15 shots faced in the final two periods and overtime. Goalie changes are sometimes done to spark the team and it sure worked here and Montreal came out strong in the third period by drawing penalties and tying the game up with the ensuing powerplays. Aleksi O'Koivu-Volkova also stopped all three shootout attempts by the Knights, specifically some of the top scorers in the league, and stole the win tonight for Montreal.

Shootout Highlights
Shot 1: Karlstrabe Scholz skates down the right wing side, takes a hard wrist shot that Aleksi O'Koivu-Volkova gets a piece of with the glove
Shot 2: Keegan Angelo skates down the center of the ice slowly, takes a fast snap shot aimed right at the 5-hole and Vivian Leblanc closes the door with a stick save
Shot 3: Vladislav Konstantin skates fast down the center of the ice, deeks to his backhand and Aleksi O'Koivu-Volkova gets a leg pad on it
Shot 4: Willy Mack skates down the left wing side with speed, takes a quick snap shot that beats Vivian Leblac blocker side. Montreal puts the Knights on their heels.
Shot 5: Nickolas Klaus must score to keep it going, he slowly skates down the center of the ice and trys to corral the rolling puck. He deeks to his backhand, shoots, and Aleksi O'Koivu-Volkova gets a piece of it with his blocker.

An interesting Knight in in Kelowna, as a massive blown lead ultimately brings the Militia to arms as they beat the Knights in the Shootout. Of note, the Knights had actually chased the starter, Vrana, form the game in the second period due to a underwhelming defense and some lackluster moving between the pipes. O'Koivu-Volkova came in as relief and had them self a perfect game, stealing the show from Leblanc, he had holes in coverage all night long, and was finally overwhelmed in the third period when the Milita forced them into overtime. The coaches seemed confident in Leblanc maintaining as the game went on, but the pressure from all sources proved to be too much.
