#1

Welcome to the PGS of game 135
Halifax Raiders are hosting Anaheim Outlaws

Game 135 takes us to Halifax, where the Raiders trying to break their 3 game losing streak and find their third victory of the season, while Anaheim is coming in hot from a 2 game winning streak, looking to best the struggling opponent. The predictions are on the side of Anaheim, let's find out of they can get to the third W in a row.

1st period

The first half of the period was definitely a quiet one, with no goals, no penalties called, teams just looking and trying out each other seeing if they can find a opening for an attack. And Anaheim is the first to strike, exactly at the half of the third with Bohne scoring from Gibbles and Rome. Anaheim didn't get to enjoy their lead for too long though, with Halifax responding almost 5 minutes later as Scoreov scores from Matsson and Montgomery to tie it up, and then Outlaws lost the lead going into the intermission when at 18:46, a new roster aquisition and a rookie Boone scored from Matsson again. Outlaws had stuff to talk about leading into the second period.

So, Halifax leads Anaheim 2:1 after first, with Raiders having 10 shots to Outlaws' 7. As no penalties are called yet, we are just awaiting for the game to get a bit more physical. Also, one would appreciate less icing calls right from the faceoff.

2nd period

The second period brings only a single goal, early into the period Doskocil gets called for interference and Anaheim uses the following powerplay as Fujikawa scores from Bohne and Petermen. For Bohne this is his 20th assist of the season, and already a second point of the game. As the physical presence of both teams got more visible, so did the penalty count, but both teams unable to really use their chances, the period ends without any response from Halifax, neither a go-ahead goal from Anaheim.

Anaheim therefore scores 1 goal with Raiders unable to respond even if they outshot Anaheim 13 to 10. Even more suprising is the inability of Halifax to use their 3 powerplays, unlike Anaheim, that got their goal from one of the two powerplays they had.

3rd period

Last of the periods in regulation brings not much more action. The only goal comes from the hands of Halifax' players, as at 2:08 Choybuk scores from Faceoffs and Montgomery. The defense of the Raiders afterwards managed to handle Anaheim for the rest of the period to nurse home the closest victory, shutting Anaheim's win streak and also ending their own streak of losses.

For the period, Halifax scores one unanswered, with 16 shots against the 9 of Anaheim. Also, only 3 penalties were called in the period, two of them in favor of Halifax, one Anaheim's.

Closing thoughts

As mentioned, Halifax wins the contest at home 3:2 after a somewhat uneventful game. Anaheim trying to fight back outhit the normally very physical Halifax 17 to 11, also had more success on faceoffs by quite a margin, but in the end, shots heavily in favor of Halifax (39:26) made Anaheim happy to not leave with a bigger spanking. Many thanks can be given to their goaltending, which even in a loss tied the save percentage with the other goalie, which is quite interesting feat. The special teams were also a bit of a boring situation, Anaheim scored the only PP goal of the game, using 1 out of 3 their chances, Halifax losing on all of their 5.

Whether you believe Halifax deserved the win or not, they managed to squeeze by and look to improve their fortunes come end of the season. For Anaheim, it's a hard loss mainly because it was so close, but brighter days lie ahead and Outlaws can look forward to fight in the race for a top 6 spot that secures them a playoff spot, which can't be said about their opponents.

3 stars of the game

3rd star:  raiders  Oleg Scoreov (1G 0A 1P, +2, 2 shots)

Oleg has scored the very important game tying goal to let Halifax back into the game, and has been simply having a great game for himself. Of course, with slow games come low points, but there are different things to evaluate player on and Oleg came big tonight.

2nd star:  raiders  Kristoffer Matsson (0G 2A 2P, +2, 4 shots)

Kristoffer managed to have two crucial points in order to give Halifax the lead they managed to cruise home eventually. For him, it has been a quiet season, so a few points that he got are a great motivator to do better.

1st star:  Outlaws  Derek Bohne (1G 1A 2P, +1, 6 shots)

Derek has done everything one can do to bring home the victory. Alas, he hasn't been awarded with the points in the standings, but a few came to his personal scoring sheet. Derek had a undisputably great game and Anaheim would surely enjoy having these performances every game.

Even though the score does not reflect it Anaheim's defence put up some decent underlying numbers. They managed to kill off 10 minutes in penalties and went 100% on the PK, they blocked 10 shots on the night and tried to help out goalie Mike Hunt as much as they could. With the exception of a rough night for Osbert Whacker and Vegeta Muerto who went a -2 and -3 respectfully the rest of the Defensive core even went so far as to even squeeze out a +1 in the +/- category and put some points on the board. Hopefully the second half of the season sees Anaheim continue to build off what looks to be a solid defensive group.

Great goal tending at both end of the ice in this one. How great was it you ask? so great that both goalies registered the exact same save percentage (.923). While it was goalie Mike Hunt who saw the bulk of the action making a whopping 36 saves on 39 shots. Mike McKorsy had an excellent game as well stopping 24 of 26 shots faced on the night. Halifax made a strong push during the 3rd period but Hunt was there to keep it tight. The Anaheim Outlaws have been very fortunate this year to have such great goalies to rely on to try and steal them games but alas it was not tonight.

Again as has plagued Anaheim in previous games has caught up to them again. Halifax was able to more evenly roll their lines and have fresh legs more often. In fact Halifax only had 2 players that received less than 15 minutes of ice time, PJ Paradise (2:59) and Desmond Carey (0:07 who somehow slipped out just during a single PK shift). While in comparison Anaheim had 6 Players who registered less than 15 minutes of ice time throughout the game. It will be interesting to see if Anaheim tries to bolster it's depth in the second half of the season if they are hoping to make an impact in the playoffs.

The fourth star:
While Gaspard Boone has had an uneventful start to his SMJHL career, tonight he pulled through for his team. With the help of his line-mate, Matsson, who had a lights out performance with two goals, Boone was able to help cement a swing in momentum towards Halifax. A quick win off the face off from Matsson and a snipe from Boone and Halifax took an important lead moving into the second period. Perhaps this indicate something more to come of our newest arrival at Halifax. Boone only had two SOG this evening and was able to capitalize on one showing he has an iota of offensive talent. Let's hope that we see more from this rookie as he gets settled in at home.

MILESTONE ALERT: Gaspard Boone Tallies First Career Goal

It can be tough to break into a team part way through a season, but Gaspard Boone proved up to the task tallying his first goal in only the sixth game of his young career.  Skating on the Raiders' third line with Kristoffer Matsson and Oleg Scoreov, both players were involved in Halifax's tying goal earlier in the first period, Boone found himself lined up deep in Outlaws' zone for a faceoff.  Matsson won the draw cleanly to Boone, who then fired a quick one timer over Anaheim goalie Mike Hunt's shoulder to give the Raiders a late first period lead.  Scoreov quickly skated to the net to retrieve the puck for Boone to keep as a memento.  Although not the winning goal, the Raiders would use the momentum from this goal to secure a victory over the Outlaws 3-2.

Comment 2

POWER PLAY WOES: Cause For Concern in Halifax?

Not much has gone right for Halifax so far this SMJHL season.  One bright spot the Raiders can point to is their power play, whichhas hovered near league average for a team that has troubles generating offense at five on five.  Despite the win over the Outlaws, Halifax was unable to convert any of their five power plays in the contest.  The team cannot rely on their special teams to bail them out, but when the Raiders are last in the league in goals for they need all the help they can get.  They will look to have their power play enter the zone and establish their cycle next game and hopefully will find better results.

Comment 3

A GOOD GERMAN WALL: Mike McKorsy Slams the Door on Anaheim

The Raiders received a huge game from goalie Mike McKorsy, who began the game with a flurry of shots from the Outlaws.  Luckily for Halifax, the team settled in and the defense was able to tighten up in front of McKorsy.  The Raiders fell victim to a bad bounce trying to leave their zone half-way through the first period which resulted in an Outlaws goal.  From then on, McKorsy shut the door on the Outlaws at even strength, ending the game stopping twenty-four of a total twenty-six shots.  Anaheim was able to tie the game in the second period with a power play goal from electric scorer Hiro Fujikawa, but McKorsy yielded no more goals and was a main factor in the Raiders' victory.

S45 Game 135 Simweek 5 Anaheim Outlaws vs Halifax Raiders

In the Halifax Raiders 3-2 Win both starting goalies (Mike Hunt / Anaheim and Mike McKorsy / Raiders) worked for a good even Sv% of 0,923. For this % Hunt had to stop 36 of 39 Shots and McKorsy 24 of 26 Shorts. In his 3rd W McKorsy shut down the 2nd period. First period was not as he would have liked it and he got 2 goals against him. At the End of the he could stop enough pucks to get the raiders win home. McKorsy, pushed by his great BackUp Justin Willis, looks better from game to game like the whole team.

Welcome to C Three Stars for this match between bottom of the table Halifax Raiders and the Anaheim Outlaws.

Arbys First Star - Derek Bohne Outlaws

Your first star goes to Outlaws top line centre man Derek Bohne. The first liner was all over the ice all night for Anaheim, hauling ass everywhere he went and putting some long shifts in. He lead his team in ice time, with a total TOI of 22:33. The first goal of the match came courtesy of him, and he also assisted the Outlaws' second and only other goal. He is without a doubt they sole reason Anaheim didn't lose this match by more than they did. His penalty killing also helped keep the Canadian team out of the net more than they were. Overall a flawless performance.

Arbys Second Star - Kristoffer Matsson raiders

Matsson, third line centre for the Raiders is your second star of the match. Not only was he on the ball offensively with a 2 point night, he was also the physical presence of the game, providing the most hits against the Californians of his team. His two points, both of which were the primary assist on the two Raiders goals in the first period, would eventually prove essential to setting the pace for the rest of the game in favour of Halifax and give them their 3rd win of the season.

Arbys Third Star - Oleg Scoreov raiders

Your third and final star for this match up goes to Matsson's line mate, Scoreov. The third line showed excellent chemistry tonight and this proved invaluable for the win tonight. The first and game tying goal came from Scoreov, which instantly turned the tide in favour of Halifax. He was a +/- of 2 for the night, making him a big player for Halifax's win.

Russia Russian spotlight: rookie. Russia

Russian rookie Oleg Scoreov came up big in this game. With his third goal of the season, along with a +2 rating and 2 big hits tonight, Scoreov was named 3rd star for only the second time in his young career. His play today was very reflective of the kind of player he’s been training to be, with 71 scoring and 70 defense.

Highlight of the night:

Goal Goal Goal
Code:
2. Halifax Raiders , Oleg Scoreov 3 (Kristoffer Matsson 3, Dominic Montgomery 13) at 14:50

[Image: PlushWarlikeHairstreakbutterfly-size_restricted.gif]

His best play of the night? Couldn’t be anything else but his first-period deflection. Scoreov’s goal in tonight’s game came off of a well-timed shot by Kristoffer Matsson and some great hockey smarts by Scoreov’s. Quick reflexes and good positioning helped Scoreov tip this one right on goal and past Hunt to tie the game at 1.

Scoreov was recently traded to second-place Detroit, with Halifax getting veteran Detroit senddown Tobias Viklund in return. Hopefully, with a seemingly stronger supporting cast and a battle for the Laurifer on the line, we’ll be able to see him flourish and close out his rookie season strong.

Russia 3 Russian Stars of the Game: Russia

Russia : Oleg Scoreov (HAL)

This young Russian broke the scoring drought for Halifax early in the first period, bolstering the team towards their eventual 3-2 win. With that goal, Scoreov now has 3 on the season, and the second third-star designation of his career. Scoreov also had 2 hits and a +2 to cap off what ended up being a remarkable two-way game for him, all things considered.

Russia Russia : Jerry Mander (ANA)

The Russian brick shithouse strikes again, putting up a great all-around game even if he wasn't able to get himself a point today. The young power forward managed to get three shots on goal tonight, but no luck hitting the back of the net. His lone hit in the game, a rare occurrence for the man with 92 hits through 42 games, came to force a turnover on one of Halifax's sneakiest scorers. He even managed to win his single face-off attempt tonight.

Russia Russia Russia : Mister McCarty (ANA)

The junior senddown continues to be stellar at the dot, picking up another 4 wins in 7 attempts at the dot today.

Mike VS Mike

Tonight both goalies showed great play, they enden at the same exact save percentage of 92.3 but there was one major difference. The Halifax offense managed to put put of 39 shots on net versus only 26 shots from anaheim. Although lots of shots dosen't always mean that you will score, it got to a overwhelming point tonight for Anaheim's goalie Mike Hunt. With a great save percentage and the solid play Hunt showed the Outlaws should take a look at why they gave up so many shots. You could see that Halifax wanted the win tonight never showing any sign of slowing down, shooting 10 shots on goal in the first period, 13 in the second and 16 in the third.

1. Two great goalies faced each other tonight, Anaheim's Mike Hunt and Halifax's Mike McKorsy. The Raiders goalie got the better end of the deal, as he wasn't as challenged as Hunt. Both goalies had the same save percentage, 0.923%, but the Halifax forwards managed to slip a last goal in the early third period to seal the win. Coming into this game with a 3-15-5 track record for McKorsy, we are sure he will be delighted to add another win for his team. Hunt was chased late in the third in favor of a sixth player, but the Outlaws couldn't tie the game.

2. The fresh face the Raiders signed earlier this month in Gaspard Boone is already showing great promise by scoring his first goal tonight, assisted by Kristoffer Matsson. The young centerman turned right winger is adjusting well to the SHL ice and we believe he will be a great addition to this team full of rookies. We hope Boone will be able to center his own line in the future, if not, next season, where he will be able to show his teammates how great he is in his natural position. While we know the Raiders are talented, it will take time until they develop good synergy to rival the top teams in the SMJHL.

3.  The Halifax Raiders might want to hire a new powerplay coach as it hasn't gone well for them in the past few games. Once again going 0 on 5 attempts, the Outlaws shut them down at every opportunity. Earlier in the season, it had been their strength, counting on their power play units to score important goals to bring them back in the games. Now however, it really shows how it sets them back when playing versus strong teams that don't depend on their own power play units. We hope they will manage to turn in around in the second half of the season if they don't want to end up dead last in the standings.

The Insignificantly Significant Player Of The Game.
A ridiculous Wawazat award .. Awarded to the player with less than 7 minutes of ice time that actually registered something positive.
The Fifteenth and final recipient of this trivial achievement..
Is Anaheim Outlaws Defenceman Jonny Jokihoki.
Even though Jokihoki appears nowhere in Anaheim lines for this contest he managed to secure 4:08 of premium SMJHL ice time. A check by the Wawazat research team of the Outlaws roster does show him there ..so there's that. As for stats he did have a blocked shot (1) as for the rest it's 0's across the board. The significant thing was the 17 seconds of Powerplay and 2:39 of Penalty kill time he managed to include in his 4:08 for the Outlaws. So the Fifteenth and final winner of the S45 Insig/Sig awards is Anaheim Outlaws Jonny Jokihoki. Congratulations to Jonny.

Comment #1: Outlaw Spotlight: Derek Bohne - Center
Derek Bohne continues to show why the trade bring him to Anaheim was a good move by Anaheim's GM. Bohne lit the lamp once in tonight's game as well as making an excellent pass to teammate Hiro Fujikawa for another goal. This effort should not go unnoticed by the fans as Bohne lead the team in TOI with 22:33. Bohne was involved in all of Anaheim's scoring, which netted him a positive +/- of 1. Bohne also lead the charge in faceoffs for his team winning 20 of the 37 taken by his line. Bohne also helped contribute to a fantastic PK which stopped 5 of 5 opportunities.

Comment #2: Anaheim Edged Out by Halifax
In an extremely well fought battle, the Anaheim Outlaws fell short against the home team, the Halifax Raiders. With a final score of 3-2 Anaheim was not able to capitalize on enough of the Halifax players mistakes only scoring on 1 of 3 powerplays. Conversely the defensive core held up well as the Outlaws stopped 5 of 5 on the penalty kill. How Anaheim was unable to pull out the victory is astounding having won the stat battle in hits, faceoffs, and blocked shots. Anaheim centers were on point in tonight's game with each boasting a 50% win rate or better.
