Game 122: Anaheim Outlaws (12-11-2, 6-4-2 away) vs. Anchorage Armada (17-7-1, 10-2-0 home)

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA -- With their 6-game win streak broken just a few nights ago in Vancover, the Anchorage Armada hoped to continue their winning ways against the middling Anaheim Outlaws. The teams' previous two matchups in Anchorage were blowouts, as the Armada won their first meeting 6-1, while Anaheim won the latest meeting 4-0. Today's game was definitely the tightest matchup of the two, but ultimately the offensive pressure applied by the Armada proved too much for the inexperienced defensemen of the Outlaws. The Armada came away with 2 points in a 3-2 victory.

First Period
The first 20 minutes of play proved rather uneventful for the Outlaws, as they could only muster 3 shots on goal officially. It's a miracle that Peter Larson even stayed awake in net. Early on, the two teams exchanged penalties: first, it was Xena who went to the box for a trip, then Alexei Ivanov for Anaheim just past the halfway mark of the period. Some excitement finally arrived when, halfway through an Armada powerplay, first-line center Dean Colt III scored his first goal of the season. A bad shift from Anaheim immediately following the Hiro Fujikawa dump into the Anchorage zone led to an opening just wide enough for the Armada to steamroll coast-to-coast. Apart from another penalty for Anaheim - this time courtesy of Aaron Freakin' Rome - this was all the action from the 1st, and the Armada had to have felt confident even with the score just being 1-0.

Second Period
After being out of the penalty box for a whopping sixteen seconds, Aaron Freakin' Rome clearly wasn't done speaking with the fans as he booked himself another two minutes, this time for hooking. Fortunately, yet again, the Outlaws killed his penalty successfully. A few minutes later, Anaheim got some production out of their 4th liners as they've been seeing in respectable amounts all season; Mister McCarty got one past Larson with help from Jonny Jokihoki and Alexei Ivanov. In spite of some great defensive play throughout this period (only 9 shots were registered on goal between the two teams), Anchorage took the lead back just four minutes after the McCarty goal. Star offensive d-man Leopold Lockhart put away his 9th of the season. Here's the game call:

Still 1-1, but the Armada are threatening here ... Niemi FIRES one ... deflected away accidentally ... Kovacs follows his missed deflection and gets it back ... quick WRIST--just wide. Soonika looks fairly lost for Anaheim but it doesn't matter ... the Armada can't get one on net, here's the pass to Niemi, ONE TIMED! ... BLOCKED in front by Whacker, I think that was going to be on target. The puck careens into the corner. Kovacs is stopped in front. Lockhart is there for Anchorage to grab the puck. Nobody there, he has to go on net ... shot -- Goal Goal SCOOOOOOOOORES!!!! Goal Goal Lockhart ... was out of position there for a moment and just fell on the puck to keep the sequence going ... but with how this man's year has been going, he can do no wrong. What a blistering shot from point blank, Soonika didn't have a chance at it.

Anchorage took the lead and held it through the 2nd; it was 2-1 through 40 minutes.

Third Period
The Armada picked up where they left off in the shooting department, managing 15 shots on net. The Outlaws were kept to just 5, making the grand total for 60 minutes of play ... twelve shots. Anchorage's lead was doubled when Dean Colt III came up big yet again just four minutes into the period. The mismatch on the first line was apparent all game! There weren't many highlights of note past that. A few minutes after the Colt goal, Colin Gibbles put together an amazing run coast-to-coast to score his 5th goal of the season. Star center for Anaheim Derek Bohne got credit for an assist and a faceoff win on the same play thanks to Gibbles' efforts. In spite of that an occasional other sequences of greatness, though, the Outlaws could not gain any momentum. Whether it was the Mathias Seger tripping penalty two minutes after the goal to make it a 1-goal game again, or the Anthony Banthony penalty a few minutes after that, 12 shots will barely ever get you a victory in a hockey game. A brilliant effort by Sinooka after getting nearly no help for half the game kept it a 1 goal loss in the box score.

Final Score
Armada Anchorage Armada - 3
Outlaws Anaheim Outlaws - 2

Three Stars
1. Dean Colt III Armada - 2 G, 5 SOG, 11/19 faceoffs
2. Eero Niemi Armada - 2 A, 2 SOG
3. Oliver Kovacs Armada - 2 A, 3 SOG

It is hard to win games when your team spends almost a quarter of the match short handed. Anaheim has to be more disciplined if they are going to start moving up the standings. In a 1 goal game a team is really rolling the dice by taking so many penalties and I think it showed here in this game. While it does say something about Anaheim's defensive play and goaltending that they can kill off 7 penalties in 1 night and still keep it a one goal game it is better to not put yourselves at such a disadvantage.

I can't say for sure because stats aren't kept for this category but I think Peter Larson racked up and impressive 10 minutes of sleep during this game, mainly in the first period. Kidding aside Larson did fine and made all the stops he needed to secure the win even with Anaheim "push" in the third period. Meanwhile at the other end of the ice Tibuk Soonika was doing everything he could to keep the game from getting out of hand for Anaheim. While he didn't get the result the team wanted this goalie is putting up some fine numbers and showing he is a really solid tender.

Worth noting that Anchorage was able to ice a more rounded lineup with only 2 of their players going over the 20 minutes of ice time mark. Anaheim conversely had 6 of their players who passed that threshold. Anaheim's 4th line averaged approximately 5 minutes of 5-on-5 play compared to Anchorages 8 minutes of 5-on-5 time. This is becoming a recurring theme for Anaheim and at half way through the season they are going to need to be relying on more contribution from their depth if they are going to find success for the rest of the season and into the play offs.

Comment #1:
Anaheim's box play team was on fire today. They allowed only one goal in 7 power play attempts they allowed the Armada. Derek Bohne and Hiro Fujikawa were the two forwards who both had over 6 minutes penalty kill time on ice. That might explain their lack of offensive power today. On the defenses side, the Outlaws most prominent penalty killers, Aaron Freakin Rome and Mathias Seger, have both gotten them 2 minor penalties each, so Milo Momoka and Mister McCarthy had to pick up for them and also both spent over 6 minutes on the ice while being short handed. Anaheim certainly didn't miss a will to fight, sadly they often took illegal measures doing so.

Comment #2:
Another positive sign on the Outlaws side today was Tibuk Soonika. Anaheim's goalie 1B stopped 28 out of 31 shots, which is good for a 90.3 save percentage. Considering a lot of these shots came out of good positions during the 14 minutes of power play, the Anchorage had today, this is a very impressive number. Soonika is putting a lot of pressure on Mike Hunt. It will be interesting which goalie the Outlaws are going to start once the play offs come around. On the other side, Peter Larson's numbers don't look all that impressive. He stopped 83.3% of the 12 shots he was tasked with tonight. This game would have been winnable by Anaheim, had they not taken so many penalties.

Comment #3:
The toll of the penalties also showed itself in the number of shots taken. The third period was the best for the Outlaws with a whole 5 shots towards Larson. In comparison, both Bust and Dean Colt III from Anchorage each managed to get off 5 shots during this game. In the end we have a shot total of 12 to 31 in favor of the Armada. The first period was especially poor for Anaheim. Even though they could play their only powerplay in the game in this period, they only managed to test Larson three times. Only Collin Gibbles and Mister McCarthy shot more than once and half the team had no attempt at all.

Game 122 Simweek 5 Anaheim Outlaws vs Anchorage Armada

Tibuk Soonika startet with a 5-2-1 record in this game but got his 3 W despite of the better goalie effort in this game. A SV% over 0.900 is a good one. Peter Larson in his 12th win of the season only has to stop 10 of the 12 shots he faced. Its not clear if it was a great defense effort by Anchorage or a poor offense outing by Anaheim. Soonika would maybe have dreamed of Dean Colt III that night, two (including the GWG) goals from the 3 came from the Anaheim Striker.

Comment one - Anachorage poor power play
Anchorage won the game 3-2 and outshot the Anaheim Outlaws 31 to 12, but the score could have been a lot higher if there were better in converting on the power play. Out of 7 power plays Anchorage Armada only managed to score 1 goal. It was the first goal of the game 13:43 into the first period by Dean Colt III. On all other attempts Tibuk Soonika was stellar. With a power play percentage of over 22% the Anchorage Armada is still in the top half of the league. Though when they want to make a difference this year, they will have to improve in this department.

Comment two - Tibuk Soonika snubbed for a star
Goalie for the Anaheim Outlaws Tibuk Soonika was snubbed for a star of the game in my eyes. With 28 saves on 31 shots having to endure 7 power plays, he had a save percentage of 0.903. Though the home team media favoured only players from the Anchorage Armada for the first stars of the game. Soonika had a solid performance through out the game and none of the goals could be blamed on him. Specialy in the first and third period where he faced a lot of shots. 11 and 15 shots respectively. In my eyes he should have been considered.

Russia Russian player notes: Russia

Jerry Mander: This American-born star continues to make a name for himself in juniors, putting up another hit towards a campaign that currently sees him 8th in the league as a rookie. However, this -2 tonight might be symptomatic of a weakness in that physical play of his, as he’s currently a surprising -10 for the season.

Alexei Ivanov: The young Russian rookie showed some big hustle in today’s game, with two hits and his second assist of the season. With a startling increase in influx to the Federation in recent years, Ivanov continues to fight to prove what role he might be able to serve on the federation’s roster.

Mister McCarty: McCarty showed tonight how he can round out his play past the solid 53% he’s winning at the dot. McCarty played renaissance man tonight, putting up one hit, one shot block and two shots, in addition to his fourth goal of the season.

Comment 1. Offense is the best defence

Peter Larson wasnt sleeping during that game tying goal, but he was eating his emergency got to stay awake snickers bar. And that because the buzz of armada players at the other end of the rink was hypotonic. Armada offensive players out shout their opponents three to one. And while Tibuk Soonika did a great job of keeping the Amarda assault at bay, he could have done more to relieve the pressure on himself by controlling more of the rebounds, 2/3 of the Armand's shots on goal were able to be attacked by the armada forwards. Armada also dominated at the face offs enable them to continue to pressure the outlaws throughout the game.

Turning Point
Anaheim wasn't the first to have to kill off a penalty, but when Alexei Ivanov took a penalty for holding against Maxime Bouchard at 11:31 of the first, it seemed to set the tone for the Outlaws. Anchorage didn't capitalize on that powerplay, but the game returned to even strength for a mere 22 seconds before Anaheim centre Thornton Opperman slashed Bust and was sent to the box. This time, Anchorage's Dean Colt III scored, assisted by Mika Mayfield and a revenge-seeking Bouchard. It was the only powerplay goal Anchorage would score, despite 5 more chances, but the amount of time spent on the man advantage only helped spur them to a win.

Three Dimly Lit Stars
3 - Anthony Banthony
Banthony may not have appeared on the score sheet, but he was on the ice for Mister McCarty's tying goal in the second period and for Collin Gibbles' goal that had the Outlaws trailing by just one with over half the third period still to play. At a plus two for the game, it's no wonder that Banthony was frustrated enough to draw a roughing penalty near the end of the third.

2 - Jacob Geza
Geza put in the work (nearly 22 minutes of it) to support his defence partner Leopold Lockhart and provide a defensive backbone for the team. Despite being on the ice for an Anaheim goal, Geza managed 4 shots on goal, displaying his excellent two-way play.

1 - Mister McCarty
In a different universe, McCarty's game-tying goal spells a very different result for an Anaheim Outlaws who followed his lead and stayed out of the box for the rest of the game. Unfortunately, we don't live in that universe.

Alexei Ivanov Takes Advantage
For a player that was only on the ice for 5 and a half minutes of the game, Alexei Ivanov certainly made his presence known. Aside from his unfortunate penalty at the beginning of the game, Ivanov also notched a secondary assist on the first goal of the game, as well as laying two hits on key players on the Armada: Xena and Dean Colt III. The hit on Dean Colt III is particularly interesting, as Ivanov relieved Colt III of the puck, and despite it being picked up by Anchorage's Cotalay, allowed McCarty to pick off Cotalay's pass and send the puck out of the zone. Colt III managed to score not long after that, but by then Ivanov had left the ice, proving that his limited presence had a significant impact for the Outlaws.

The Insignificantly Significant Player Of The Game .
A ridiculous Wawazat award .. Awarded to the player with less than 7 minutes of ice time that actually registered something positive.
The Fifth recipient of this trivial achievement..
Anaheim Outlaws Fourth Line Left Wing Alexei Ivanov.
Ivanov utilized his 5:30 of premium SMJHL ice time in this contest to the maximum and it resulted in an assist on Anaheims 1st goal of the game ( Scored by Mister McCarty at 4:42 of the 2nd Period). Ivanov also contributed 2 hits to Anchorage opponents and had an ending stat line of 0-1-1 with an outstanding +1(+/-) even while spending 2 minutes in the box of shame. Congrats to Alexei Ivanov.

Let's take a closer look at the game winning goal by Dean Colt III of the Anchorage Armada at 4:30 of the third period. This play started deep in the Armada zone in a face-off that was won by Vital Krantsov. The puck went to Whacker, but was intercepted by the Armada's Speardane. Speardane passed to Kovacs in the neutral zone who chipped it ahead and caught Eero Niemi breaking into the zone with speed. Niemi broke the outside and curved in for a shot, but missed the net. Kovacs followed the puck in and retrieved it from the corner, circled around and fired another shot on goal. The goalie Soonika was up to the task, but the juicy rebound went straight to Dean Colt III who buried it for the lead.

Comment 1: Outlaw Spotlight: Collin Gibbles - Right Wing
Collin Gibbles came up big tonight for Anaheim in their close loss to the Anchorage Armada. Posting his 5th goal of the season, Gibbles ended the night with a positive +/- of 1. Gibbles recent promotion to the first line seems to be a wise decision as he continued to incorporate his defensive game into play. Gibbles registered 3 hits in tonight's game and even laid his body on the line with 1 blocked shot. Surprisingly Gibbles accomplished this while being on the ice for under 15 minutes including limited special team play totaling barely over 1 minute. Gibbles did manage to stay out of the penalty box, a fate not shared by many of his teammates.

Comment 2: Mistakes Take Outlaws Out of Game
Tonight's showdown between the Anaheim Outlaws and Anchorage Armada ended in disappointment for the away team. The Outlaws lost 3-2 despite a last period rally by Gibbles and Bohne. The biggest factor in tonight's loss has to be special teams. The Outlaws received 7 penalties while the Armada only received 1. This wild gap in time shorthanded contributed to a less than stellar offense by Anaheim. Anaheim did manage to hold the Armada to only 1 powerplay goal out of 7 chances. This stellar defensive play made the game far from the blowout it seemed to be mounting towards. Anaheim also outhit their opponents 25 to 16 to keep pressure on the puckholder.
