Post-Game Show: Game 114
The Kelowna Knights host the Detroit Falcons

It was a high-octane game between the Detroit Falcons and Kelowna Knights tonight, but the home team came away with the victory after 60 minutes of play with a close 5-3 score. Despite the Knights being two goals up when entering the third period, the Falcons had plenty of scoring chances, with Kelowna keeper Vivian Leblanc stopping 14 third-period shots to keep the game in the hands of the Knights. The Trio of declared German-national players, Nickolas Klaus, Nolan Sawchuk, and Sanyi Kocsis combined with great chemistry and respectively took home the first, second, and third star of the game. Klaus had a 4-point night, Sawchuk had 3 points and six shots, and Kocsis played a great defensive game while also contributing a goal, 4 shots, and 4 hits.

First Period

Just four seconds into a Mikael Mlynarczyk interference call, Sawchuk scored his twelfth of the season on the powerplay. Getting of a great shot from the face-off circle after a good feed from Klaus, the puck was partially caught by Cedric Robinson’s blocker, but still made it into the back of the net. Detroit would eventually respond with just over a minute left in the period, with the lethal third line of the Falcons striking again. Emerson and rookie Kit Smeb helped set up a beautiful passing play that left fellow rookie Raino Kyllonen with an easy tap-in for the equalizer. The period ended with the game tied at 1, and the shots favouring Kelowna 12-9.

Second Period

After a standard first period, the game exploded with offense in the second. A total of six goals were scored this period, and both teams got to demonstrate their potent scoring weapons. Franz Cooper gave the Falcons a 2-1 lead early in the 2nd, and the third line struck again with Kit Smeb netting his 7th of the season less than a minute later. But the Falcons suffered a bit of a defensive collapse when Kelowna stormed back to score four unanswered goals to wrap up the period. The last goal of the period came from Nickolas Klaus, who had also added two more assists in the second period alone. The Knight’s top line was incredibly potent tonight, with Sawchuk and Klaus combining for 7 points and Bobby Sharp providing 4 hits and keeping the puck on his teammate’s sticks.

Third Period:

After conceding four unanswered goals, the Falcons clearly got a verbal ass-kicking during the second intermission. Up to the end of the 2nd, Kelowna had outshot Detroit by a count of 26-19. For the third period alone, Detroit would amass 14 shots on net and only allow 5. The puck largely stayed in Kelowna’s end for the entirety of the third period, and there was little chance of Kelowna adding to their 5 goals. However the Falcons could not solve Vivian Leblanc for the end of the game, as they stopped all shots that came toward the Knight’s crease. Even with two powerplays, one coming with 45 seconds left to play in the game, Detroit had some prime scoring chances that Leblanc swatted aside to keep the “W” alive. The Kelowna offense exploded in the second period and after that, the skaters seemed to take the third period off, something that the coaches will definitely not be too pleased with. However, their goalie stepped up where it mattered most, and the Knights stood their ground at home with a strong 5-3 win over the high-flying Falcons.

comment #1 (pro vs team stats)
The Kelowna Knights and the Detroit Falcons played their 6 and final matchup against each other tonight. With Kelowna winning this game 5-3, both teams ended their matchup record with 3 wins and 3 losses. Looking further into the stats and you can tell that these two teams are not inferior to each other. Detroit has scored 21 goals against Kelowna, while getting 20 goals against. That said, Kelowna did win their last two matches against Detroit so maybe they have found a way to fight them. Anyway, this will be an interesting battle if the two teams meet each other again in the playoffs.

My player spotlight of today is Nickolas Klaus of the Kelowna Knights. Nickolas is a sophomore center who went undrafted in the S44 SMJHL Entry Draft and signed as a free agent. In his rookie season he surprised everyone with 36 points in 50 games. The Minnesota Chiefs noticed this and selected Klaus 16th overall in the S45 SHL Draft. Klaus is trying to improve his already impressive stats from last season and it looks like he is succeeding. In this game he picked up 4 points, one goal and three primary assists, bringing his total to 47 points in 36 games.

Comment 1 (Unsung Hero):

Not appearing as one of the three stars is; Kit Smeb. Smeb had a solid game registering a goal and a primary assist. Smeb played 15:23 minutes and had 3:52 of power play time as well. To compliment Smebs offensive production he also had a +/- of +2 across the game which is good considering the goal barrage in the 3rd period by the Knights. Smeb also completed 9 passes and only had one giveaway from passing. He was passed to 17 times. The two goals Smeb was involved in were after good passing plays.

Comment 2 (Story of the Game):

This was a great game with big momentum swings during the 2nd period. With a little under 3 minutes to go in the first the Falcons tied the game up at 1 stealing a bit of momentum. The used this momentum to segue into the 2nd, scoring 2 goals in the opening minutes. Showing perseverance the Knights answered back 30 seconds after Smebs goal, keeping them in the game and stealing a bit of momentum back to keep it at 3-2. The next 10 minutes the Falcons controlled much of the play but the Knights kept holding onto the momentum and opened up later in the 2nd giving us our final 5-3 score.

Comment 3 (Goalie Spotlight):

Despite not playing an outstanding game statistically with a respectable .909 save percentage, Vivian Leblanc carried the Knights in the last period. 42% of the saves Leblanc made came in the 3rd period, where he mad 14 saves. 10 of those saves were without rebounds. Leblanc made 10 saves in total in the 2nd period alone. The Falcons actually had 23 shots attempted Leblanc in the 3rd period. As a cherry on top the Knights took a minor penalty in the last minute and Leblanc made 3 saves in the last minute to win the game for the Knights. Highlighted by a big rebound that was left for Franz Cooper but Leblanc made the 2nd save and gobbled up the rebound.

Karl's Stars

First Star - Nolan Sawchuk Knights - Collecting 1 goal and 2 assists Nolan manged to factor in to the majority of the Knight's offense on this one. Add in a team leading 6 shots on goal and it's hard to argue that the sophomore winger wasn't a dominating force driving this Kelowna team.
Second Star - Nickolas Klaus Knights - Finishing the match with 1 goal and 3 assists you could argue that the second year centerman had a case for 1st star honors, but I opted for the explosive shooting power of Nolan on this one. Nickolas did manage to register a shot of his own though, netting the 1 goal, and performed nicely in the faceoff circle winning 15 of 30 draws.
Third Star - Raino Kyllonen Falcons - One of two Falcons to finish with 2 points and a +2 rating in the defeat, Raino arguably the best player on the Detroit based squad this evening. Finishing the game with 1 goal, 1 assist, 4 shots on goal and a couple hits the Detroit center had a nice performance in an otherwise disappointing game for his team.

Thanks for the sig ragnar!

Smeb report:
Kit smeb came into this game with only 6 goals and 4 assists for 10 points on the season. Not as great as he had hoped he got on the board early with a nice pass to Raino Kyllonen for kyllonens 6th goal and smebs 5th assist. Just the next period and a little over 4 minutes of gametime Kit scored his first goal of the game to give detroit a 2 goal lead unfortunately after that Detroit imploded and gave up four straight goals in the second, but kit came out of the game with a nice stat line of two points and a plus two in fifteen minutes of ice time

First Star: Nickolas Klaus (KEL)
Klaus without a doubt earned this first star performance tonight. Not only did he score the last goal of the game, he also assisted on 3 others goals, including the first of the game. In addition to this he played 20 minutes tonight with almost 4 of those on the penalty kill.

Second Star: Nolan Sawchuk (KEL)
Sawchuk also had an impressive game tonight. He opened up the scoring under 10 minutes into the first and continued to work hard in this game assisting on 2 more goals. He had a strong assist on the go ahead goal scored by Clapper in the second. He had the same amount of game time as Klaus with just under 4 minutes on the penalty kill.

Third Star: Sanyi Kocsis (KEL)
Kocsis found himself as tonight’s third star of the game. No surprises here as the entire first line of the Knights were tonight’s three stars. Kocsis finds himself the third star as he scored right after Detroit scored twice in almost 30 seconds and started the Kelowna comeback.

Tonight’s turning point of the game was, without a doubt, Sanyi Kocsis of Kelowna. Detroit scored two quick goals early in the second period making the game 3-1 in their favour. Kocsis settled the game by scoring just 30 seconds after which prompted the Kelowna comeback. Kelowna then went on to score 3 more unanswered goals.

Special teams were a major factor of this game both in terms of power play and penalty kill. It is no shock that Kelowna tops the league in power play percentage. That fact was clearly eveident tonight as Kelowna managed to score 2 goals on 4 attempts. Both Kelowna’s first of the game and the game winner were power play goals. Penalty kill, on the other hand, is known to be an aspect of Kelowna that needs to be improved quite heavily. Tonight, however, the penalty kill was great with the Falcons going 0/4 on their man advantage.

Special teams showing up!
For me the biggest story of the game between the Knights and the Falcons were the difference in the respective teams special teams. Both teams had the same amount of attempts (four) and both generated all things considered very similar levels of offense, with the shot totals ending at 33 to 31 favoring Detroit. When looking at how the game ended at 5-3, the fact that Kelowna was able to convert on two of their four power play attempts suddenly becomes very relevant. Whether this comes down to Kelowna over performing, or Detroit having an off day is another subject - but the difference in special teams certainly became very decisive in my eyes.

Comment #1 4 point night:

The Kelowna Knights can always rely on Nickolas Klaus this year as their most prolific attacker. Tonight, he registered a 4 point night, 1 goal and 3 assists for a First Star of the game performance.

His goal came at the end of the game as Detroit was trying to tie the game up. This goal crushed any hope for the Falcons to come back in the game. He assisted on teamates Sawchuk, Kocsis and Dick Clapper goals. The star forward also managed to win 15 of his 30 faceoffs taken and ended his game with 6 shots on goal. Overall, he carried the team to victory as any star forward would do.

Comment #2:

Vivian Leblanc had yet another solid game, not only keeping the Knights in the game but also frustrating Falcons forwards on many solid occasions. She managed to stop 30 of the 33 shots received, many of high quality. Detroit had 4 powerplay during the game and couldn't capitalise once thanks to Leblanc's spectacular saves and her legendary calm. On the opposite side, goalie Cedric Robinson did not live up to the expectations and Leblanc made him look bad. Cedric Robinson is a good goaltender with a lot of upside as he is still progressing but Leblance quite simply stole the show from her rival and many GMs wished they would have drafted her. You can expect these 2 goalies to have many more great duels, the homer in me rooting for the Knight player to get a win most of the time of course.

Comment #3 Penalties:

The Kelowna Knights are known for their flashy offense, but supporting cast also brings a lot of aggressiveness, sometimes for the best other times for the worst. We mentionned Leblanc was solid on the PK unit frustrating Falcons' Stars. The penalties leading to these PK situation were a Charging minor from Big Fudge and a Boarding Minor by Nathan Explosion. Jackson Samuel was boarded by big forward Explosion and was having a tough time getting back to the bench. Luckily, the player was not hurt despite the replay cam showing his arm bending in two. There are many occurence of apparent injuries thorought the league but again, with the best of luck never a player has been injured in over 100 games during S45. Hockey specialists are baffled that no injury was ever recorded in either the SHL or the SMJHL. LEague Commissionners always thank the '' Simulator God'', whatever that is.

Comment 6

A very close and exciting game that really only had one loser. The goalie trainer for the Falcons. Defense for both teams was solid and both goalies had flashes of brilliance, but in the goalie duel, Leblanc beats out Robinson in a close. It is again odd to see the game basically shut down in the final period as both teams switch up to fit the situation they are in, as Kelowna only managed 5 shots on net in their attempt to stay back, which ultimately beat the Falcons attempts to score.  Obviously the Knights needed this win more than Detroit, but in this league, in today's game, every point is too valuable.

The Insignificantly Significant Player Of The Game.
A ridiculous Wawazat award .. Awarded to the player with less than 7 minutes of ice time that actually registered something positive.
The UNLUCKY Thirteenth recipient of this trivial achievement..
Is Kelowna Knights Fourth Line Center Justin Siddals
Wait didn't he win this before???
Yes Justin Siddals is the First Repeat Winner of this dubious award.
Siddals took 6:57 of that premium SMJHL ice time and went 6/9 from the faceoff circle. He also took 2 shots on goal. Siddals ice time which was closer to the under seven minute barrier earned him the nod over his teammate Liam Hutchinson . Better luck next time Liam.
Kelowna Knights Fourth Line Center Justin Siddals winner of this Thirteenth Insig/Sig award it should go nicely next to his other Insig/Sig (#9).
