#1

Welcome to the 139th game of the new SMJHL regular season. This time it is the Detroit Falcons versus Lethbridge Lions.

PERIOD 1
The first period started off quick, with a fast goal from the Falcons. After a great pass from Nat Emerson (10th of the season) Franz Cooper scored his 11th goal of the season and made it 1:0 after just 55 seconds played. Lethbridge started to pressure and got on of their own just 2 minutes later when their best scoring line did it again and Arsene Arsenich (9th goal of the season) burried a beauty after passes from Monkey D. Luffy (10th) and Dickens Makeout-King (6th). The period turned out to be one hell of a show with lots of scoring chances, but at the end the goalies stayed strong and didn't let anything beat them again. With all this offensive play it was a surprise to see that there were no penalties given. The score after the first stayed 1:1 and the shots were also tied at 11 for Lethbridge and 11 for Detroit.

PERIOD 2
Once again, the period started off strong! This time after just 42 seconds played the Lions carried their momentum over from the end of first period and the same line got another goal, this time passes for Arsenich and Makeout-King but the goalscorer was Luffy (7th). The Falcons wanted to get it back fast, and went on an offensive spree. Benois got the first penalty of the game early in the first for hooking and gave a great chance for the Falcons to get back into this game fast. And they did. Just about 25 seconds in to the PP and they tie the game after a great combination between Viklund and Skottson the end word went to Dicks who scored his 6th of the season and tied the game. Just 2 minutes later Lions managed to yet again score and this time it was Amin with his first goal of the season and boy it was a pretty one. Passes from Baston and Karppa. What a scoring spectacle in the first 5 minutes of the 2nd period. We did have to wait a while for some more action, but after 12 minutes of play Lions once again showed why they are the better team on the ice, at least for now. Briedis got his 2nd goal of the game after passes from his fellow Latvian Aparjode (5th) and Baston who got his 2nd assist of the game. Detroit went on a counter attack and got another PP after Arsenich got penelised for hooking. And again, Falcons PP unit was on point scoring after just 6 (!!) seconds! Great goal by Cooper who was assisted by Fantobens and Zvejnieks (both had their 11th assists of the season). What a period! The fans really had a chance to cheer. The second period ends with a score 4:3 for the Lions and the shots were also in favor for Lions with 9 shots for them and 6 for the Falcons.

PERIOD 3
As we go into the 3rd period the Detroit Falcons have nothing to lose while Lions have to keep their ground and protect their one goal lead. Detroit starts off great with some shots on goal and great puck movement, but they just can't seem to score or at least hit the goalie with some hard shots. They even had a chance to play 3-on-5 PP, but Detroit just couldn't score. Lethbridge just seems like the better team on both ends of the field. And the leading line for the Lions did do just that. With 7 minutes into the 3rd, Arsenich scored his 10th of the season and just a minute later Amin scored his second of the game and second of the season to give the Lions a comfortable 6:3 lead. With only 12 minutes left to play the Falcons were pinned down in the corner and showed no signs of getting into this game. Even more, they started to play dirt and that never ends well. Right at the last 1/4 of the period they got 2 penalties and ended up defending not attacking. That cost them the game and the important points in the table. As for the Lions - it was a great team win and a boost heading into the next games. They really needed this win to show others that they are a force to be reckoned with. Shots for the period were 9 for Detroit and 11 for Lethbridge.

Karl's Stars

First Star - Arsene Arsenich Lions - One of three players to achieve 3 points in this game, Arsene is the only to do so while also tallying 2 goals. While his +2 rating isn't quite as flawless as some of the others on the team he did manage to collect 4 shots and a single hit showcasing his ability on both sides of the puck.
Second Star - Franz Cooper Falcons - One of just a handful of Falcons to finish with a positive (or I guess not negative) player rating Franz was far and away the best Falcon in this losing effort. Registering 2 of their 3 goals and collecting 3 shots in a reduced 16 minutes of ice time is proof of this.
Third Star - Maurice Amin Lions - The first star in the sim, you can't deny the effort Maurice put in to this winning performance. Tallying 2 goals, 2 shots and 2 hits his presence was felt all over the ice and he played a huge factor in this Lethbridge victory.

Thanks for the sig ragnar!

Lions Takeaways the Lions need to learn from this win  Lions

1. Special Teams comment one
So ya it's one of the teams few wins but the Lions need to start evaluating the mistakes and learn from them. 0/2 on the powerplay isn't the worst but could definitely be improved in the long run, especially when you are taking more penalties and only killing off half of them (2/4). 2nd last overall in power PK and PP is just not going to cut it coming into the playoffs.

2. Shots comment two
This team isn't used to putting the puck on the net but for once they outshot their opponents and it resulted in a victory! There are a lot of rookies on this team because they are an expansion team. So these guys are a little behind the 8 ball to start. That being said it never hurts to just put the puck on net and hopefully get some lucky bounces to curve the momentum and get the ball rolling for themselves. I believe this could help them upset some of the better teams on a daily basis.

3. Lines comment three
They only have 3 lines! Being a newer team with fewer players and also fewer established players. There has been a lot of line juggling and it just comes down to some things aren't clicking all the time and when you can't rotate your players well enough then the cookie crumbles. This game saw even the weaker players playing upwards of 17 minutes where as the Falcons had some 3rd and 4th liners between 10-14 minutes, with some dips to around 5!

Smeb report:
Kit smeb ends up having one of his worst games of the season in this one. Detroit lost the game 3-6 to lethbridge, and the third line failed to produce any offense whatsoever with only 3 shots coming from the trio, one of which was from kit smeb and it was a weak wrister right into the chest of the lethbridge netminder. Kit was also zero for two on critical faceoffs, and although hes not a center, its nice to see the wingers win one here and there when their center gets thrown out of the dot. Look to next game for kit to come back.

Goalie report:
One of the greatest goalies to ever play in the smjhl has one of his worst games ever in this one. Robinson lets in five goals, yes five whole goals on only twenty three shots. Hasek came in for relief after Robinson lets in the fifth goal, and Hasek only let in one goal after that but it wasnt enough relief as the detroit offense was unable to get anything past netminder Nadeau after the second period. Detroit peppered Nadeau with nine shots in the third but were unable to get passed him, and youd think Nadeau would get a start for shutting the game down, but with such an offensive game all the stars go to offensive players.

Cedric Robinson had a big collapse for the Detroit Falcons in tonights game. After playing 46:31 minutes and allowing 5 goals on 23 shots he got pulled and his backup for the night Jakub Hasek got to finnish in net. Cedric Robinson had a down night with 78.3% saves. On the other side of the rink Patrice Nadeau faced 26 shots allowing 3 goals for 88.5 % saves. Not a great number either but tonight it was enough to come out with a much needed win for the Lethbridge Lion's. Both teams need to take a look at their defensive game with the playoffs approaching since games like these can end your season.

The Champ and Goat of the Game:
Champ: Maurice Amin finally got his act together in this game, scoring the first two goals of the season and earning the first start on the night. He scored the go-ahead goal in the 2nd period and from that point forward the Lions wouldn't surrender the lead. His second goal in the third made the game insurmountable for Detroit and was important for a back-breaker.

Goat: Cedric Robinson continued his poor play in this game, getting yanked after allowing 5 goals on 23 shots, and the worst part of it was it was in the third period when the team still had a chance to take the game. Robinson is currently at a .896 save percentage despite a great record, which means that he really is holding the team back in ways.

Interesting Facts of the Game:
The Detroit Falcons are feast or famine so far in this season, as the team has allowed 4 or more goals in 16 of the 40 games they have played so far. Most of these games have featured teams that are significantly worse offensively than them, which begs the question as to what exactly is going on with Detroit? Lethbridge in particular has only scored 4 or more goals 10 times this season, and were merely .500 in those games that they played. There is a big reason why the Lions are the worst team in the SMJHL at this point in time. Thankfully for them the Falcons' goaltending did not show up to play, allowing them to add another 4+ goal game to their stats.

Goal of the Game:

Despite the loss, the Falcons Franz Cooper provided a nice highlight-reel worthy goal when the Falcons were behind 4-2. Due to a fortuitous power play from Arsene Arsenich's mis-timed hooking penalty, Cooper had time and space to carry the puck into the slot and put a solid wrister home past Patrice Nadeau. This was his second goal of the game, but unfortunately it would be the last goal that the Falcons would score in this one, leading to the 6-3 score. Franz Cooper has already provided a ton of GOTY candidates up, so this should come as no surprise to anybody.

Story of the Game
One cannot speak to the nature of this game without mentioning the uncharacteristically bad performance of Falcons goaltender Robinson. Whether this was the effect of miscommunication with defenders or simply an off night is hard to say from where we're looking, but the end result was clear - Detroit had to chase. Everytime they potted a goal, it felt like the Lions were on them like, well, lions and always managed to either match that goal or even extend their lead. By the time Robinson was switched out for the backup, Detroit were too deep in the hole and all Lethbridge has to do was play the rest of the game out solidly which they did well. One could be of the opinion that the keeper change could've come sooner. To Lethbridge's credit they put up respectable offense, winning the shot totals 31-26 in a game I feel many people would've put their money on red.

Pride of Lions?
The aforementioned offensive prowess were in large due to the effectiveness of their 2nd forward line, consisting of Monkey D. Luffy, Arsene Arsenich and Dickens Makeout-King. Together they answered for a total of 10 shots on target and a point production 8 (3G 5A). Mind you, this isn't even considering the defensive pairing that were on the ice with them, which makes the feat even more impressive. They're all playing a fairly decent amount of minutes, but even so - considering they're the second line the production they're putting up might even be reason for promotion? Time will tell.

Special teams, Lethbridge?
While I'm sure the Lions are very happy with their overall performance in this bout with Detroit, the performance of box the boxplay and the power play deserve a a look. With the power play going 0 for 2 and the boxplay letting one in on half of the 4 attempts Detroit had, this is certainly the one weak point of Lethbridge's play in this game that stood out for me. And while those numbers on their own aren't disastrous, I'd bet it's still something that management and coaching staff are having a keen look at going forward. A momentary lapse in focus, or the beginning of a negative trend?

Comment 1: Special Teams
What did I say before? The Lions are at it again with their lack-luster special teams and it is seriously hampering their play, albeit they won this game but that hasn't been the case for most of the season. They have been relying on bailouts from the goaltenders or just giving up goals and having to outscore their problems which they rarely do. They discipline as they took another 4 penalties this game and it would not surprise me if they led the league in penalty minutes, which led them to have a terrible 50% PK in comparison to the 100% that Detroit managed to achieve meaning that the Lions powerplay also lacks the finishing power to punish other teams.

Comment 2: Penalties

The Lethbridge Lions aren't the most physical team out there always being out hit by their opponents but why is it they are taking so many penalties constantly? Well it comes down to the fact that most of these penalties are due to small stick infractions such as hooking, tripping or high-sticking which can be mended with time. Being an expansion team in the league there are not many veterans on this Lions team and as such they are taking strides to learn the way the SMJHL works and unforutnately for the Lions is being done through small silly infractions that could be avoided. Look to the future when the Lions are no longer struggling in the penalty department as players get more comfortable with the rules and know exactly when they can and can't get away with.

Comment 3:Game Winning Goal

The game winning goal belongs to second pairing defenceman Dinars Briedis. In the second period of tonight game the Lions started applying immense pressure and at about 12:00 into the period Roger Baston deftly squeeked his way into the Falcons zone and snapped a shot right at Cedric Robinson with Eva Lykke Aparjode running the screen who tipped the puck over the net and with a weird bounce off the boards ended up at the blue line in the tape of Dinars Briedis who for a moment was considering whether to pass it or shoot until the crowd started chanting , "SHOOOOOT". Briedis wound up and launched a rocket straight through Robinson giving him zero chance to react putting the Lions up 4-2. The Falcons would only score one more goal in this hockey game, allowing Briedis to record a GWG.

1) Hits!
The hits in this game were somewhat close (16 to 12), with Detroit having 4 more than Lethbridge. Neither team was overly physical throughout the game, but there were a few players who stood out. Defenseman Pierre Laroche-Durocher for Detroit had 4 hits during the game, which equaled 25% of his entire team's total hits. Lethbridge didn't really have a powerful presence on the ice like Detroit did. Instead, a few players (Brennan Kennedy Jr., Joln DuBolk, and Maurice Amin) all had 2 hits each. Interestingly enough, the team with fewer hits overall (Lethbridge) actually had more penalty minutes with 8 than Detroit did with 4.

2) Top Two Forward Lines Contributions - Detroit
Looking into the top two lines of the Detroit Falcons, we can see that Detroit's first line (30% icetime) of Marc Palicka, David Fantobens, and Hippo Passamus didn't do so well this game. When combining some of the stats for the game, they had a total of: 0 Goals, 1 Assist, -3 Plus/Minus, 10 Shots, 2 Hits, and 0 Blocks. However, Detroit's second (30% icetime) line of Kalvins Zvejnieks, Donnie Dicks, and Franz Cooper had a lot more success. They had a combined total of: 3 Goals, 1 Assist, 0 Plus/Minus, 8 Shots, 1 Hit, and 0 Blocks. Some good work from the second forward lineup for Detroit!

3) Top Two Forward Lines Contributions - Lethbridge
Looking at the top two lines of the Lethbridge Lions, it's clear that both lines had greatly contributed to the success of the game. Looking at their top line first (37% icetime), Roger Baston, Eva Lykke Aparjode, and Maurice Amin combined for 2 Goals, 5 Assists, +9 Plus/Minus, 10 Shots, 3 Hits, and 0 Blocks. Lethbridge's 2nd line (34% icetime) of Monkey D. Luffy, Dickens Makeout-King, and Arsene Arsenich had a combined 3 Goals, 5 Assists, +6 Plus/Minus, 10 Shots, 2 Hits, and 1 Block. Only one goal in the Lion's 6-3 victory was from a line other than their top two. Fantastic work by these six forwards!
