PGS S45 Game 111: LBL vs STL
#1
(This post was last modified: 01-17-2019, 05:55 PM by TnlAstatine.)

Coming at you live from the Post Game Studios we have the St. Louis Scarecrows  Scarecrows hosting the Lethbridge Lions  Lions

 Scarecrows 1 - 4 Lions

The Lions come into this game on a 2 game losing streak sitting with a bleak 5-17-0 record sitting near the bottom of the table, while the Scarecrows won their last game and boast a winning 12-10-0 record. The Scarecrows are the clear favorite in this tilt. That's the tale of the tape, let's see how the two actually matched up!

1st Period
We start the game off slow with not a whole lot of action from either side. The Scarecrow come at the Lions rookie goalie Patrice Nadeau with a flurry of non quality shots which he stops with ease. The pressure was clearly on the Lions in the first period and the frustration started to show as they took two penalties this period trying to stop the Scarecrow flurry. They kill off the first penalty from Brennan Kennedy Jr. that came early in the period and a nice surprise come after star rookie defenseman Donny McMasters takes a selfish high sticking penalty late in the frame. Rookie captain Monkey D. Luffy (6) pots one of his league leading 3 shorties after a defensive zone faceoff win by Roger Bastion and a quick change and some great puck movement by Dinars Briedis (7) and Benois Minuscule (10). Rattled from the tally the Scarecrows continue the pressure with even more shots but can't seem to beat Nadeau or the post for that matter.
 Outlaws 0 - 1 Lions
Goals:
Lions Monkey D. Luffy (6) 15:30 (SH) - Dinars Briedis (6), Benois Minuscule (10)

Penalties:
Lions Brennan Kennedy Jr. - Hooking (Minor) 3:03
Lions Donny McMasters - High Sticking (Minor) 14:42

Shots:
Outlaws 15
Lions 6

2nd Period
It looks like the Lions coach had a good talk with the boys in the locker room and they came out flying in the second. Not even two minutes into the period Jøln DuBølk (3) scores his third goal of the season on the powerplay assisted by Dinars Briedis (7) and Nick Mckee (3). The Lions don't stop there, not even two minutes after that Tutankhamun muscles off the face off and pots his seventh of the season with the helper going to the center and Lions leading point getter Roger Baston (12). This extended the Lions lead to 3 but the Scarecrow office refused to stop peppering Nadeau with a relentless onslaught of shots. Unfortunately for the them at 17:17 Gordie Boomhover converted his own rebound only to have it called back for a crease violation. Lots of shots by both teams but the Scarecrows can't seem to get any high quality ones and they end the period on the PK (third of the period) so the frustration is clearly showing.
 Scarecrows 0 - 3 Lions
Goals:
Lions
Jøln DuBølk (3) 1:55 (PP) - Dinars Briedis (7), Nick McKee (3)
Lions Rahotep Tutankhamun (7) 4:46 - Roger Baston (12)

Penalties:
Scarecrows Samuel Jalopski - Holding (Minor) 0:05

Scarecrows Rainbow Dash - Holding (Minor) 11:37
Scarecrows Rainbow Dash - Interference (Minor) 19:49

Shots:
Scarecrows 11

Lions 10

3rd Period
The game slowed down a bit in the third period with both teams looking a little tired. However the Scarecrows still refused to stop putting the puck on net hoping they could finally get one past this rookie goalie. Finally at 7:48 Tyler Tougard (6) gets one past him after a bunch of uncontested rebounds from Helmuts Akemlauks (12) and Michael Fox (4). The Scarecrows would be unable to get anymore by this rookie after a sensational night and Cant Eykihl (3) puts the nail in the coffin coming from Jordan Joestar (6) and Jøln DuBølk (5). The Scarecrows couldn't find a way to beat Nadeau this night and that was their only downfall after outplaying the Lions for most of the night. The Lions withstood the storm and hopefully they can use this momentum against a good team to light up the second half of the season!

Comment 1: Three Stars of the Game

Star #1: Patrice Nadeau (40/41 Shots Saved, 0.976 SV%)

Despite his 5-15-0 record, Nadeau made a valiant effort against the defending champions. While his record has led many to question his ability in net, being last in Save Percentage and Goals Against, there is no question Nadeau will make improvements in his game. Tonight's game is hopefully a sign of things to come for the rookie goaltender.

Star #2: Jøln DuBølk (1 Goal, 1 Assist, 2 Points)

The Swedish defenseman is continuing to make strides, tallying a goal and an assist in tonight's bout. DuBølk has been a very good producer for their defense, providing a solid amount of hits and blocked shots and providing for the offense when he can. While there is much room for improvement on the physicality side (DuBølk only made 1 hit throughout the night), there is no question that the

Star #3: Dinars Briedis (0 Goals, 2 Assists, 2 Points)

Briedis made a good effort in getting the puck to his teammates, as he helped open scoring by assisting in Monkey D. Luffy's opening goal, as well as DuBølk's tally. Briedis has made 7 assists as of this game, including the 2 assists from tonight's matchup.

Comment 2: Duel in the Night: Goaltender vs Goaltender

Patrice Nadeau (Lethbridge) Vs. Billy Sorokin (St. Louis)

For tonight, it was a battle of the rookies. It ended in a feel-good confidence boost for Patrice Nadeau, a down on his luck goaltender having a rough rookie season, as well as an evaluation for Billy Sorokin, and what still needs to be done

Patrice Nadeau:
Start #: 20
SV%: 0.979
Shots Saved: 40/41

First up, Patrice Nadeau. Now with a record of 5-15-0, the rookie goaltender has had quite the rough rookie season so far, with the current lowest save percentage in the SMJHL. This game seems to be a breakout performance for Nadeau: despite the team being outshot in every period, Nadeau was visibly more confident in his play, going for saves that he had previously missed. Tonight's win against the defending champion Scarecrows should be a confidence booster for Nadeau moving forward.

Billy Sorokin:
Start #: 2
SV%: 0.800
Shots Saved: 16/20

Between Nadeau and Sorokin, there are a few major differences: mainly, Sorokin has been fairly shielded from starts so far, with this game being his second start of the season. Was it worth sitting Aleister Cain for a night? Not really. For the most part, Sorokin looked very sluggish on most of his saves, allowing ample opportunities for the opposition to score. Given the fact that this is his second start it is understandable, but St. Louis really needs to throw Sorokin into the fire often: who knows when Cain will head off into the SHL.

Comment 3: Highlight from the Broadcast

Time: 19:55 left in the 2nd period

(John Klomer, Lions Play-by-Play) "Clock is ticking on the Lion's power play, only about 15 seconds to go. Nadeau takes the dumped puck and passes to Briedis while the Scarecrows change lines. Briedis to McKee, then back to DuBølk on the blue line. Puck is now in the Scarecrow's zone. McKee, back to Briedis, then passes to DuBølk, then pa-  AND. HE. SCORES! DUBØLK HAS HIS 3RD OF THE YEAR! THE LIONS ARE NOW UP BY 2!"

(Razor Sharpe, Lions Color Commentator) "Wow. Very good play by DuBølk here: after Briedis passes the puck, he kind of does a bit of stickwork here. It looks like he was gonna pass it to Myton, but he retrieved the puck a little and just flew that puck over Sorokin's right shoulder like a joke over your naive friend."

Karl's Stars

First Star - Patrice Nadeau Lions - Pretty hard to argue this one. The Lions were out shot by an insane margin of 41 to 20 yet manage to sneak away with a 4-1 victory? Someone owes this goaltender a nice steak dinner. Finishing the game with 40 saves and a shiny 0.976 save percentage he is easily the first star of the match.
Second Star - Rahotep Tutankhamun :Lions: - While only able to register a single goal Rahotep was an absolute force in this one. Registering a team high 8 shots and a team high 5 hits he was machine on both sides of the puck. This is even more so impressive when considering the team only managed to collect 20 shots on goal.
Third Star - Joln DuBolk Lions - With 1 goal and 1 assist he was one of two players to achieve two points in this one. Add in a team leading 4 shot blocks and this blue liner provided tremendous value in his twenty minutes of ice time. While perhaps not as dominating as the previously mentioned Rahotep, he was much more efficient on the chances he created.

Thanks for the sig ragnar!

1) Physicality Physicality

Despite dominating the body to body aspect of the game, the Scarecrows were still unable to find much luck offensively. St. Louis outhit the Lions 18-15, with both Rainbow Dash and Slip McScruff accountable for 4 and 3 hits respectively. However leading hitter of the night was Lions Right Winger Rahotep Tutankhamun who put up 5 body smacks thru 60 minutes.

2) PP no working

Both sides Powerplay units were almost non existent. The Lions generated the only man advantage goal of the night going 1 for 4 when they had an extra skater, while the Scarecrows were shut out going 0 for 3 with the additional body.

3) PK Fire

On the other side of the coin, perhaps we should ask ourselves why the Penalty Skills were so effective. Ty Hoover and Kiko Rytmeyr led the St. Louis scarecrows in time on ice during the disadvantage state, with Kiko maintaining a clean sheet, not picking up a dash all night.

Steven Moyer, defensively solid. In this 4-1 loss to the Lethbridge Lion's the scarecrows center Steven Moyer showed that his teams poor performance does not affect him. Although he went with out points in this game he showed great play in the defensive zone. Winning 17 of 24 face offs, a 70.8 win % shows that you can count on him for important draws both in the offensive zone and defensive zone. Steven played for 19:13 minutes in this game, including 2:38 on the power play and 3:47 on the penalty kill. He played the 3 most minutes on the first penalty killing unit.

Comment 1:
St Louis Chronicle Game Recap
St Louis came into tonight's matchup the clear favorite over Lethbridge, who had only won five of their first 22 games of their inaugural expansion season. It ended up not going the way St Louis had expected, as Lethbridge scored four goals on twenty shots, compared to one goal on 41 shots for St Louis. The St Louis coach was not happy with the way his team played tonight, and neither were the players as not a word was spoken in the locker room by anybody after the game. St Louis is heading into that stretch of the season where every game matters, and it will be a true tell of the team's resilience in this next stretch of games.

Comment 2:
Special K Special Team's Player of the Game
Tonight marks the first time this season that this award will not be given out to a player on the ice for St Louis. Neither special teams units were good tonight, despite the penalty kill killing off three of the team's four penalties on the night. The power play was as bad as it has been all season, failing to score on all three man advantages while also giving up a shorthanded tally to open the game. The special teams units will both have to improve going forward if St Louis wants to have any chance in going far in this year's playoffs.

Comment 3:
House of Crow Rook of the Game
Tonight, despite the poor showing from the entire team as a whole, this award will be split between Scarecrow rookies Michael Fox and Tyler Tougard. Fox had the secondary assist while Tougard buried the shot in the third period to narrow the gap on Lethbridge's lead. Fox's assist was his fourth on the season and Tougard's goal was his sixth of the season. Both rookies started the season relatively slow, but have started to pick up pace as their development continues to be something the St Louis management is impressed with. If this season ends in disappointing fashion, Scarecrow fans should be excited for the next season as this rookie class is looking to be the best that St Louis has had in a long time.

The Insignificantly Significant Player Of The Game.
A  ridiculous Wawazat award .. Awarded to the player  with less than 7 minutes of ice time that actually registered something positive.
The Second recipient of this trivial achievement..
Is Lethbridge Lions Third Line Right Winger  Jordan Joestar.
It should be noted that with Lethbridge's small line up I was forced to modify the under 7 minutes of ice time to  accomidate  the  Lions.
Anyway in 17:01 of ice time  Joestar was able to register a stat line of 2 shots on goal, and 1 hit on the St.Louis opposition and even had time for 1 shot blocked.
The Major accomplishment was the 1 Assist ( on the fourth Lethbridge goal of the game by Third line Center Cant Eykhil) and the 1 point that goes with it. Joestar finished with an even 0 (+/-) Congrats to Jordan Joestar.

Nadeau let roar in the closing games of the season, culminating in his performance tonight. Rocking a solid .976 svv, on 41 shots faced. Obviously the Lions needed to be more defensibly responsible and can't rely on such monster play, however when it comes around it is always welcomed with warm arms. Sorokin is still luckless in the SMJHL this season, trying his best, but ultimately, combined with the lack luster offense that the Scarecrows could barely muster, it is not a surprise that the final result was what it was. To be fair to the Crows, they did manage to turn the Lions D into swiss cheese, however it was swiss cheese that was rigidly backed by their goalie.

Comment #1: Head To Head (Roger Baston vs Ty Hoover)

Both the starting first line centers on their respective teams, we will analyze who contributed the most to their teams success in this specific game. In the minutes played department Baston played a solid 37 minutes this game however he was slightly edged out by Hoover who played a total of 40 minutes, now playing a bit less may be a good thing it seems that St. Louis rely a lot on their #1 center in this game. The face-off battle was another stat that we looked at and it seems that Hoover out-performed Baston in that category with Baston only notching 9/23 face-offs to Hoover's 14/24, edge Hoover. Baston got himself a little heated this game and took a penalty however made up for it by getting himself 2 shots on net and 1 assist for a +1 on the night, that is already 2 shots of the Lions 20 for the night. Hoover was a bit more aggressive notching 4 hits however was invisible on the scoreboard and in the end ended up a -1. Overall, Baston had a better game and made a bigger difference in the game, the face-off differentials were not that far off to skew things.

Comment #2: Special Teams? What Special Team?

Oh my, is all that needs to be said regarding both sides special teams today. St. Louis had 3 powerplays with a 0% convergence rate which you would think they could at least pot one of the opportunities facing a weak Lethbridge Lions side. The Lions themselves also struggled but somehow managed to beat the St. Louis keeper on one of 4 attempts giving them a 25% success rate on powerplays on the night. Now Penalty killing wise, the stats of course will show that one team performed better than the other. Lethbridge killed off all of their penalties and to top it off they actually scored short-handing, what in the world is happening in St. Louis. The St. Louis penalty kill could not get it done and let in a goal to a team who totaled 20 shots all game. St. Louis really needs to get their Special Teams under control if they want to make it to the top.

Comment #3: It wasn't only the goalie

We have give credit where credit is due and praise Nadeau for his goaltending performance however this segment is not about that. Here we will take a look at the another player who made this outcome possible for Lethrbridge. Joln DuBolk played as if he was a second goalie this game and even drove offense from the defensive position. He was all over the ice and on top of his game, and by far the best defender on the ice tonight. With 4 blocked shots, 1 hit he was not scared to take the body and let some pucks just bounce right off him to help out his netminder. On top of that he notched 2 points, one goal off of one shot that might I say was a rocket of a shot and there was no way in hell even the best goalie was stopping that cannon, and an apple. Although given the 2nd star of the game it was honestly a toss up between him and Nadeau when it came down to it.

3 Stars of the Game

1 - Patrice Nadeau (LBL) - 40 saves from 41 shots - (0.976) - Nadeau had another amazing game where he stood on his head for his team. The Scarecrows doubled the Lions in shots, but Patrice was not having any of it as he turned away all but one in his effort to get the W.

2 - Joln DuBolk (LBL) - 1G, 1A, 2P, +1, 0PIM - Join played almost a 3rd of the game and was relied on to kill some penalties by his coach in which he succeded quite a bit. 1 shot was all he needed in order to find the back of the net, but where he really stood out was his shot blocking abilities as he got in front of 4 shots.

3 - Rahotep Tutankhamun (LBL) - 1G, 0A, 1P, +1 0PIM - King Tut rose from the dead with a vengenace this game. He ripped shots from anywhere with 8 shots on net and threw his body around with reckless abandon as he managed to la out 5 hits.

TSN Turning Point

It took until almost the end of the 1st period for the first goal to be scored, but the Lions capitalized on their chance and scored on the penalty kill. that 1 goal was the turning point in this game as the Lions came out in the scored and blasted 2 more shots into the back of the net within the first 5 minutes on the 2nd period as they carried on from their momentum that they had picked up in the first. There wasn't many high moments for the Lions in their first season, but this game was by far one of their highest moments of the season.

Worst Player of the Game

Samuel Jalopski from the St. Louis Scarecrows is the honouary worst player of the game on this night. He was near the bottom of his team in TOI and really didn't help his team out by picking up 2 penalties especially since he's a member of the penalty kill. A 2nd pairing defenseman such as himself really needs to be more of an impact player against a team of Lethbridges caliber as well as learn to keep himself disciplined if he wants to be the type of D that is looked at as a top pairing guy in the big leagues.

Comment #1 Bad goalkeeping or great accuracy?
This game ended with a surprising result if we look at these tems purely based on their standings and rosters. But at the end everything turned out to be quite different. Lethbridge Lions showed how great they are at capitalizing on their chances. They made only 20 shots on goal during the game and scored 4 times! Was it a bad game from the Scarecrows goalie Billy Sorokin or it was just one of those days when the puck just seemed to get through. Truth be told Sorokin isn't the first choice when it comes to defending the net. This young Crows rookie had his chance to shine against the weakest opponent out there, but he let his team down and might not get that many chances in the future. But you have to start with something, hopefully more and better games are in front of young Sorokin.

Comment #2 Does Lethbridge even have centers?
The game is based on more than just scoring goals or making big saves. Of course without goals you can't really win and without big games from your goalie you can't even start to think about goal scoring. But today the key part of the game was also faceoffs and as it turns out this time the team with less won faceoffs came out on top! The Crows completely dominated the battles during puck drop but everything else just didn't seem to lock together. Lions won only 27 faceoffs while Crows had 42. And it is surprising considering that Roger Baston who is the number one man who you think about when you hear - Lethbridge Lions centers - had the worst faceoff percentage with only 9 won out of 23 faceoffs. But I guess he did capitalize with other actions and his faceoff percentage was forgotten.

Comment #3 Patrice Nadeau is a star!
What a huge game for the young Lethbridge Lions goalie Patrice Nadeau. This is not the first game he has showed his skills and almost single handedly carried the team to victory. He did let one puck slip, but if we look at his stats, he was more then great during the game. He faced 41 shots and saved 40. His save percentage is amazing, 97.6% if we want to be precise. He was the key player in making the Crows look like small boys trying to beat one of the best goalies in the game. Great saves during the penalty kill, great first and second period with 15 and 11 saves and no goals allowed. The future is bright for this young fella and Lethbridge fans can be sure that the better he gets, the more wins they will get.
