PSG Season 45: Game 92 - Colorado Raptors VS Anchorage Armada

(This post was last modified: 01-18-2019, 09:40 PM by Lynxfire.)

Welcome to the post-game show, our first story of the night is the absolute drubbing that the Colorado Raptor's received from the big guns of the might Armada. With a final score of six to zero, nothing seemed to go right for Colorado tonight. But let's take a closer look at the highlights...

Lets start with the three stars of the game:
  • Oliver Kovacs (ANC) - First star. 2 goals, 1 assist.
  • Ricardo Cotalay (ANC) - Second Star. 2 goals.
  • Peter Larson (ANC) - Third Star. Shutout, 22 saves.
Now, let me say to start, I think Peter Larson was ROBBED, ROBBED of first star status. This rookie played his heart out in this game and kept the puck out of the net for 60 minutes. His defense was reliable but this shutout was mainly on him. While to the Armada defenses credit, the Raptors only had 22 shots on goal, but they only blocked 5 shots all game. But that's not to say that Kovacs and Cotalay didn't have great games or not deserve their star status, they led the charge for the Armada as the team did score 6 goals. Additionally the Armada played a smart game and only had 2 minutes of penalties while converting two of their own power players into goals.

First Period Highlights:
The Armada came right out of the gate shooting all their guns. Cotalay broke in on the goalie just 3 minutes into the game after Xena knocked the puck off Colorado's Vanderberg and scored right through the five hole. Their second goal of the game, by Oliver Kovacs, was scored straight off a face-off win by Dean Colt III. Dean's having a great season in the face off circle so far.

Second Period Highlights:
The Raptors bounced back a bit at the start of the 2nd, but their hopes for regaining control of the game were dashed by Lockhard scooping up a blocked shot rebound and putting it past Colorado's Yuri Ushakov. Just a minute later, Ushakov stopped a shot by Mika Mayfield, but Maxime Bouchard managed to put in the rebound. With 4 goals on only 7 shots, Yuri was pulled and Aleksandr Aleksandrov entered the net for the Raptors. But again just a few minutes later, Kovacs again gathered up the puck off a missed shot by Dean Colt and buried a shot over the right shoulder of Aleksandrov.

Third Period Highlights:
Third period was much the same s the other two, Anchorage rode their hot goalie and peppered the Raptor's with 29 shots by the end of the 3rd. Cotalay managed to score another rebound with two minutes left in the 3rd to bring the total to 6.

It seemed the story of this game were shots off rebounds of blocks. The Raptors goalies stopped the first shot but need to work on their rebound control if they want to reverse the score the next time around.

Comment 1 (Play of the game)

With all the scoring that happened in this game, it is sometimes easy to over look strong defensive plays. After the Armada went up early on a power play goal. The Raptors gave a little push back. 1st pairing right defensemen of the Armada; Leopold Lockhart, led his team in shots blocked with 2. These two blocks came from a desperate play in front of the net around 9:00 minutes into the first. Lockhart blocked a shot which caused a rebound which was then saved by Larson then another rebound shot block from Lockhart. This gave the Armada a huge momentum boost scoring almost a minute later to put themselves up 2-0.

Comment 2 (Unsung Hero)

Segueing from the big defensive play Lockhart made I believe he was the most important defensemen for the Armada this game. Not to discredit the 3 stars who played great offensive games. Lockhart also had the crucial3rd goal that started off the 3 unanswered goals Armada had in the 2nd period. On top of his two big plays he played the most minutes for the Armada being on the ice for 23:19. He was tied with Kalevi Karhunen with the lead on penalty kill minutes with 2:44 minutes, which went a perfect 2 for 2. Lockhart also had a large role on the power play, playing 4:12 minutes, that converted on 2 of their 6 tries.

Comment.1 Goalie review part one Colorado

This was a bad night for the Colorado goalie tending team, with Yuri being pulled for fellow rookie Aleksandr after conceding three in two periods, although alesksandr was not much better on the night conceding another 2 goals in only 14 shots, both Colorado goalies hand two successful rebounds each and got help on 8 shots being blocked by team mates. The sixth goal was score on an empty net but 5/29 gives a combined sav% of .827 not great. In some ways pulling Yuri after three goals was harsh when four seems to be the normal threshold, but at the same time armada forwards where having a good night on a normally solid defencive unit.

Comment 2: goalie review - Anchorage

Peter Larson’s night was a stark contrast to that of the Colorado pair, getting his first shutout of the season. He did have help from his team, in that the rampant att king by the forwards kept shots on goal to only 22. But Peter pulled his weight on the night where he was a deserved star player (3rd) , with 8 rebounds controlled which doubled the Colorado effort, and he only had 5 shots blocked for him by team mates. While anytime a team manages a shut out there is going to be some luck, this game capped a great run of games by Peter who was starting to become a dominate force in the league, for a time topping both save% and goal against leader boards.

Comment three. Perfection in a bottle

This game for the Amarda represented everything that GM max branagan might have hoped for at the start of the season. With the experienced forward pack dominating possession (44/80 face off wins) and contributing 11 total points (3G + 8a) working as hoped. The defence emerged this season to be a force to be reconned with, this game contributing 5 points (3G + 2a), keeping penalty minutes to just 4! And limiting shots to just 22. Peter Larson was the standout rookie for this game, however all put in strong shifts to dominate this game especially on defence, the GM’s decision to pair rookies with more experienced players for defensive pairings seems to be paying dividends. Special teams also performed amazingly with two goals and none conceded. This might be the high water mark for Anchorage, but if so it is a great game that th team can point to and be proud of as a highlight of a season filled with highlights.

All cylinders were firing this game for the Anchorage Armada, and much less so for the Colorado Raptors. Taking a look at the special teams of the game, Armada was decent overall. Their Powerplay succeeded on 2 of 6 attempts, and their Penalty Kill was solid, with 2 of 2 penalties killed successfully. The players for the Armada with the most time on the powerplay were Thomas Speardane (+2), Mika Mayfield (1A, +1), and Maxime Bouchard (1G, +1). Conversely, the Colorado Raptors had an abysmal 0 for 2 attempts on the powerplay, and a penalty kill percentage of 66.67%. Not only were the Raptors unable to capitalize on their two powerplays, but they were unable to score at all during the game.

Despite losing 0-6, the Colorado Raptors did manage to dominate the physical play of the game, with 30 hits to Armada's 22 hits. However, the Raptors also took a lot more penalties as a result, which led to two goals for the Armada on their successful powerplay. For the Armada, Jacob Geza was the top hitter, with 4 hits in the game. Xena was a close second, with 3 hits for the Armada. For the Raptors, Lillie Jacobs had an impressive 6 hits in the game! Both Parker Smeb and Jean-Pierre Gay were tied for the second most hits, with 4 each.

Let's take a look at the players for each team who had the least amount of icetime, and look at their contributions (or lack thereof) for their respective teams. For the Anchorage Armada, Left Wing Brock Emmerton on the 4th line had 9:09 minutes of ice time. He did not have any points, his +/- was 0, had no shots, and he contributed one hit. Wow. Don't try too hard there, Brock! At least he didn't cost any goals for his team, which is probably a plus. Looking at the Colorado Raptors, both Daniel Smeb and Steve Craig-Smeb each had 9:39 minutes of ice time. Daniel did not have any points, his +/0 was 0, and he did not contribute to any hits or shots. He did, however, go 6 for 14 (42.8%) in the faceoff circle. Steve had no points, +/0 of 0, no hits, no shots, and 1 hit. He had a 1/3 faceoff success rate. So, to summarize, those three players between the two teams didn't really contribute much, but they also didn't cost their team any goals against either!

Comment 1:
This was an absolutely disgusting effort on display from the Colorado Raptors. In between periods Don Cherry was quoted as saying "These Schmeebs should go back to China or wherever they're from. Whoever brought these guys over to North America should be ashamed. Absolutely disgusting to have these asians play over a good NA kid like Nick Novak ." even though the Smebs managed to have a combined +/- of 0 in a 6-0 game. The shots in this game were actually close with the shots ending up 29-23 in favor of the Anchorage Armada. The Raptors also took 6 penalties tonight and the Armada scored on two of those power plays.

Comment 2:
We have to take a deep look at Colorado's top six which again just hasn't gotten it done. There has been a lot of talk this season about Colorado's lines with star forward Zidek even going as far as criticizing the Raptors line choices even though he's been on the top line pretty much all season while taking ice-time away from the newer rookies. This game Zidek was -2 with one shot, Jacob Novak was -2 with one shot, Lillie Jacob was -2 with one shot and on defense Eric Vanderberg and Anastasia O'Koivu were both -3. Something is going to need to be done about the Raptors top six if they want to have a chance at winning this year in the play-offs.

Comment 3
So far this season, life isn't the only thing that Dean Colt JR is winning at, he's also absolutely dominating everyone in the circle and helping his team win games. So far this season Colt JR has a 56.95 face-off percentage which is only .03 behind the league leader. This game Colt JR won 13/21 face-offs good for 61 % which is absolutely amazing and crazy to think about. To go along with his amazing face-offs skills Dean Colt has also been putting up points. This game Colt JR had 2 assists and there was a big uproar from the Anchorage fans in the building after in their minds he was robbed of a star.
