SMJHL S45 PT 6 - Self Evaluation

32 points in 50 games was good enough for Raino Kyllonen to claim joint rookie points leader honours, an extremely impressive feat for the Laurifier Trophy winning Detroit Falcons. The Falcons leaned on Raino heavily throughout the seasons as his steady production rose, and for a team gutted by call-ups Kyllonen, alongside his teammates, surpassed all expectations both internally and externally. What was most impressive in Raino's case perhaps, is that he performed these feats playing third line minutes, clearly making the most of each one. Personally, I was shocked by his production, and whilst he never exploded in games, it was his consistent performances that kept the points ticking over for Kyllonen, and he was never held off the score sheet for too many games in a row. There are some calls, especially within the Detroit locker room of course, for Raino to be rewarded with a Rookie Of The Year award for his part in the Detroit Falcons season, and in all honestly, it's an honour just to be considered. As a first gen player, my expectations weren't particularly low, but they weren't high either. I was shocked at him being picked in the second round, after I had personally projected him to go much lower and it's definitely a huge motivator to continue to perform. Raino Kyllonen's TPE will have to increase if he wants to carry this success into future seasons, improving on the defensive side of his game if he wants to be a true first line center.

The Lethbridge Lions had a really rough season which reflects on Patrice Nadeau as well with facing the most shots in the league at about 1100 shots faced. Nadeau performed exactly as expected however there is a lot that he needs to work on, and has been working on so that next season he can push further than being a middle of the pack goalie. What he can do better is play more consistently and be more dependable in high stress situations. He has been working hard on the weakest part of his game being agility, and strengthening the stronger parts of his game as well hoping to improve his .883 Save Pct. from his first season as  a Lion. Being the starting goalie for an expansion team that finished last has slightly hampered Nadeu's stat-lines but he shows promises of a bright future with the team and into the SHL.

Now that S45 is officially over, it's really really hard to look back and be dissapointed. I joined the Raiders just before the halfway mark of the season and honestly the team wasn't doing good at all. They were on track to be one of the worst teams ever in the SMJHL. But it was a very young team and we knew that. We knew that going into the season we'd be the underdogs. We knew it'd be tough and rack up some losses. We also knew that if we kept working as a team we would only get better and better and guess what, we were right.

Though the team managed to pick up quite a few wins over the last stretch of the season, my personal performance did leave much to be desired. I was immediately thrust into a top 4 role and it was clear out the gate that I was outmatched. but as time went on I got a little more comfortable and i managed to put up a couple points here and there and I really felt like I was contributing, like I was actually a part of this team. I still have a lot of growing left to do and I certainly hope to outdo my 1 goal and 7 assists in 29 games next season. Thanfully i have the best team in the world to do it with. Whatchout SMJHL, the Raiders are coming.

Bernik was disappointed with how the season ended, but ultimately was proud of his squad. He had contributed solid minutes on special teams and on defense in general, and with the solid back stopping of Casmir Stevens and the rest of his team, managed to put up some points. He was never known for his ability to score, however he was still kind of let down that he ended the season without a single goal being scored. Overall his team covered his weakness in scoring as they had some high end talent in the scoring department, however it still was a point that there needs to be a point increase in order for Bernik to maintain his top pairing.

The playoffs were a fun time and he hopes to be back there shortly. He has started to be scouted and knows there is a lot of work to be done but was very proud of his season overall.

Kit smebs first season was kind of a bust. First off he was drafted in the fifth round, despite being highly touted and one of the most talented players in the draft. Many claim this was due to an attitude problem, but that has yet to be seen. Next Kit did not have the best stat like in the regular season, unfortunately he didn’t have the talent to put up godly numbers on the third line, and didn’t have the ice time to put up godly numbers with his talent level. Finally the playoffs. Kit Smeb remained on the third line while most of his rookie line mates got bumped up, and this worked out for the falcons as Kit sucked big donkey doo doo and his rookie cohorts did pretty well for themselves. Maybe some day kit Smeb will find that success and the ice time but until that day comes he will continue to disappoint

Season 45 was a surprising rookie season in many ways for Nikolai Evans. Touted entering the draft as an extraordinarily gifted offensive defenseman, Evans surpassed many expectations with his defensive ability. Evans tallied 60 blocked shots over the 50-game season, tying him for sixth in the SMJHL. By the end of the season, he was pulling time on both the power play and penalty kill for Montreal, and developing as a PK specialist.

However, Evans did not live up to expectations on the offensive end on the ice. While he was hardly a slouch – his 20 points led Montreal rookies in scoring – it was definitely not the elite offensive production many expected. The leading rookie scorers reached the 30-point plateau while Evans barely reached the 20-point mark. Eight of the 20 points came on the power play, which partially shows Nikolai’s ability as a power-play quarterback but shows he has some work to do in five-on-five scenarios.
