[S46 Prospect Showcase] - Stingrays Edition

The first eight games of the S46 Prospect Showcase are done and the Stingrays are off to a solid start. The finished the first day with a record of 5-3-0 while scoring 38 goals and conceding 37 goals. Only the Blazers were more successful, winning 7 of their eight games against the Wranglers. The series between the Stingrays and the Vipers seems to be more evenly matched and so it will be interesting to see how the series unfolds. The next games we be played later today. So let's take a closer look at the individual performances of the Stingrays.

Top 3 Players

Thomas Bathory - Probably the most promising young defenseman of this year's draft class. He finished the day with 2 goals and 10 assists for a total of 12 points. The next best defensemen in the whole tournament have 8 points (Corey Kennedy, Taylor Lights, Joshua Maugher) so already he seperated himself from the pack. Only 5 of his points came on the Powerplay so he seems to be a very good even strength player which will help is draft stock. He finished the day with a solid +3 rating. The only Stingray with a better rating is Khan Smeb with a +4. Let's see if Bathory is able to show this again on the second day.

Jaguar Johnson - Johnson, Right Wing, is the leading scorer of the Stingrays with 13 points. More impressive are his 8 goals on the day which are 3 more than the next Stingray (Roenick, Tankovic). He actually leads the whole tournament with his goals so he is showing that his potential as a premier goalscorer could become reality one day in the big league. He has a pretty high SH% with 21 % so let's see if that one will go down today.

Vadim Malichov - Malichov is an all around beast. The centerman has 11 points while scoring 2 goals. But he also has 22 Hits on the day which is far and away the most on the Stingrays. He is third in the whole tournament in that category, only trailing Wibbly McButternutz and Max Power. He finished the day with a solid +2 rating. But this is intriguing: He has a SH% of 5.5%. Maybe he is just a very bad shooter, but often times this means that he will be better in that regard soon. So Malichov could take over this tournament, maybe already today.

The not so Top 3 Players

Luke Derion - The goalie really had problems on his first day. Maybe it was because he had no backup and eight games is a lot to play, but he finished with a 85,9% Save Percentage which is very, very bad. Maybe today's games will help to find out if the team defense on the Stingrays is bad or if Luke Derion just isn't a very good goaltender (yet).

Taylor Lights - This will be controversial because Lights had a pretty solid offensive showing (scoring 3 goals and 8 points) but the finished the day with a very bad -4 rating. Acutally this is far and away the worst rating of all Stingrays. Only Joe Ackroyd is close with a -2. Everyone else is positive. So Taylor Lights is pretty solid offensively but as a defenseman, at least you should be able to play defense. Maybe he will progress today but as long as that doesn't happen, he is on the Not so Top 3 list.

Joe Ackroyd - You could say he is just a non factor so he doesn't really affect his team so much. He scored 0 points in eight games which is incredible because the Stingrays scored 38 goals. It must have been harder to no be involved in any goal than to get atleast one assist but here we are. But Ackroyd finished the day with a -2 rating, the second worst on the whole team. I don't know what Ackroyd is doing out there but he is pretty close to bust status if he continues.

Everything else

The Everything else list isn't really a list. Everything else is just a whole bunch of meh. Today will be the next eight games and the players on the Everything Else list need to wake up and show that they're more than just useful players if they want to be picked in the first rounds. We are looking at guys like Martijn Westbroek who is on a line with Jaguar Johnson and should be able to profit or a guy like Sami Raanta who doesn't really hit and play defense but only scored 9 points.

Outlook

The question is: Will the current trends continue or is there a superstar somewhere who will come up today and show everyone that he should be drafted 1st Overall? Only the games today can show.

Nice write up, but doesn't change the fact that the Stringrays cheerleaders smell like a trailer park. I still would tho.

I wonder if our draft class is a little more lively than the average draft class..

I like you Wibbly, but you would be the perfect guy to hate so I hope we end up in different teams.
