Wranglers Review + Draft Predications
#1

The Wranglers were a highly touted team going into the S46 SMJHL Prospect Showcase but so far haven’t been able to put It together. The Wrangles have been a very top-heavy team with the likes of Charlie Serpe, Gunner Petrov, and Cullen Grey. But the lack of depth on the forward and defense core has come into play during this tournament because they have been unable to hold their opponents off the scoreboard. So far this is a tournament to forget for most of these players at it could possibly hurt their draft stock. This article will consist of breaking some of the Wranglers and giving a brief draft predication on where they could go.

Goalie:

Ja’Aj Coitus-Wagg

Coitus-Wagg hasn’t been very good during the Prospect Showcase, he has allowed the 2nd highest goals against average of 4.48, along with the Showcase’s 2nd worst save percentage at .880 and has the Showcase’s fewest wins at 4 out of 16 possible games. Coitus-Wagg has faced a Showcase leading 600 shots in just 16 games so all of the blame cannot be put on his play but at the end of the day the goalie needs to make a larger number of saves to keep their team in the game and Coitus-Wagg just hasn’t done that this Showcase. It’s believed that his draft stock has been hurt during the Showcase.

Draft Predication: Early 5th round

Defensemen:

Charlie Serpe

Charlie Serpe was a highly touted defensemen coming into the draft and was on a top 5 rated defensemen on many draft analysts mock draft. Coming into this Showcase Serpe was expected to dominate the other team with his offensive play, but frankly it hasn’t shaped up for him like that. While he is under a point per game, there has been an increase in the effort of his defensive play. Leading the league with 38 shots blocked is not something the scouts were expecting to see and that has intrigued them according to several sources because they just didn’t expect this kind of defensive effort from an offensive defenseman like Serpe. Being on the ice is very important and Serpe has found two ways of being able to be in the top 6 for minutes played in the Showcase. One was having been staying out of the penalty box and the other way was making the most of his opportunities while he was on the ice. This Showcase hasn’t been the best friend to Serpe’s draft stock but with all the potential he has it shouldn’t affect his draft stock much.

Draft Predication: Early 1st round

Gustav Steen

Another offensive defenseman that is around a point per game but hasn’t seen his defensive game rise in this Showcase. Has been in the penalty box often and that has limited his ability to stay out of the box combined with the Wranglers weak penalty kill it could be attributed to why the team is struggling. With that said when he’s not in the box is a minute machine and he’s among some of the top minute getters in the league.

Draft Predication: Mid 3rd / Early 4th round

Forwards

Cullen Grey

Grey has a wicked shot and it has shown up early and often in this Showcase. He’s averaging over a point per game and also is showing that he can dish the puck as well as he can shoot. Grey is a very disciplined player with a fast skating stride that can beat any defenseman on the ice against him. Some scouts have been very vocal about the lack of physicality that Grey shows on the ice, and it has shown alittle this Showcase, he only has 7 hits and 5 blocked shots so far through 16 games.

Draft predication: Late 1st / Early 2nd round

Gunnar Petrov

Petrov along with Grey are great snipers and offensive players. If you put the players side by side, they are pretty close to being mirror images. That is not a bad thing to some scouts because if you were to put a pass first center between them then it could be good night to the opposing goalie. Petrov is able to make himself stand out from Grey by being a more well-rounded player in terms of being able to stick handle, skate, pass and shoot. While Grey is the better shooter of the two, Petrov is the better passer. Just like Grey, Petrov lacks throwing the body and that is well noted by scouts. Some scouts have listed his height at 5 foot 11 a negative and states it’s a disadvantage because he is so small and can be taken advantage of in the dirty areas of the offensive zone. That is been the case sometimes in the Showcase, but it is worth noting that Petrov is able to find the open ice in the offensive zone and will make the defenders pay for giving him space.

Draft Prediction: 2nd round
