Draft 1st round Overview
#1

Round 1

1. Hamilton Steelhawks - Nikolai Evans

After a strong campaign in the SMJHL for this Militia rookie in which he excited the scouts and had people all around the league talking, this defensive sensation snags the first overall draft pick. Nikolai plays a strong two way game and put up 20 pts in his rookie SMJHL season. Her is strong defensively, but is very able at capitalizing on opportunities and jumping up and joining the rush. His game lacks physicality, but as he develops, this weakness will become less apparent. He is a blue chip prospect and is almost sure to succeed at the pro level after a little more marinating in the juniors.

Likelihood to be involved in the shadow organization: 9/10

2. Hamilton Steelhawks (VIA San Francisco Pride) - Anastasia O'Koivu

A strong stay at home defensive defenseman. While the expectations may have not been such a high pick for someone of this build, it will be a perfect complement to their 1OA Nikolai Evans. Anastasia is very strong physically and defensively and is among the better checkers in the SMJHL. Teams will do well to keep their head up on the blue line with Anastasia patrolling the blueline.A decent passer and skater will lead Anastasia to being a strong prospect for the team who will slot into a first line position in the future. Needs to work on having shots hit the net, but this is not a major concern as Anastasia is not advertised as a scorer

Name origins: Fuck if I know

3. Tampa Bay Barracuda - Olivier Cloutier

The first forward off the draft board may appear a little surprising to some of the folks out there after his 13 point season, but don’t be fooled, this player has a ton of potential and is improving in all the right places. Tampa Bay clearly saw a lot in him this season and think very highly of this player and decided to snatch him up early before anyone could have the chance. A strong skate and shooter, he has all the potential in the world to light up the SMJHL next year and move on to a strong career in the SHL. Expect to see this guy start to pop off as he becomes more comfortable and ups his training to the caliber it should be.

Likelihood to miss a game due to excessive sunburn: 10/10

4. Buffalo Stampede - Monkey D. Luffy

Now, contrary to the 3rd pick, here’s a guy that we expected to be high up in the draft. After a strong rookie SMJHL season where he put up 31 points, Luffy is poised to continue that success and begin competing for Junior scoring titles next year. He’s a very talented player who can dangle and finish very well. He’s somebody that you need to keep an eye out for whenever he’s on the ice as he can take advantage of any small defensive error and make you pay. As he develops, we look for him to start differentiating a little more and focusing more on shooting the puck as compared to passing it.

Likelihood to admit his favourite restaurant is in Kelowna: 1/10

5. Minnesota Chiefs (VIA Chicago Syndicate) - Mathias Seger

A strong skating defenseman who has a great breakout pass and can jumpstart the play very well. He’s strong in his own end and will be valuable for any team looking to add a bit of firepower to their blueline. Coming off a 17 point rookie season, Seger is poised to have a strong sophomore campaign as he continues to improve defensively and become one of the better skaters in the league. Fairly strong physically, but doesn’t tend to use this to check, but rather to keep people off him.

Chances that he’s Bob Seger in disguise: 7/10

6. New Orleans Specters - Jimmy Slothface

27 points in his rookie season out in the Maritimes. It’s pretty clear that Slothface was not dining on donair every night to keep up that type of form. This speedy youngster has a habit of finding the back of the net, and it doesn’t look like he’s ready to stop anytime soon. Some think he should pass more, but in my humble opinion, he should keep doing what he does best, burying that puck in the back of the net. Expect this guy to be top of the league in goals scored in the juniors this coming year, and competing for that title in the SHL in a few seasons.

Chances he’s actually a sloth: 0/10. Unfortunately.

7. New England Wolfpack (VIA Calgary Dragons) - Perry Morgan

Back to back picks off of the Halifax Raiders. Next off the board we have Perry Morgan, a speedy as hell defenseman who is always the first one back. His skill in the defensive zone is absolutely incredible and his awareness is off the charts. While he’s not the most physical defender, Morgan excels at being in the right place at the right time and ensuring that his stick is in the lane, making it very hard for opposing teams to get an offense setup. He will be a strong anchor on the New England blueline for years to come.

Chance he’ll become a scummy reality tv show personality: 8/10

8. Manhattan Rage - Andrej Doskocil

Want a defenseman with a ton of discipline who will always have himself in the right place and not take a ton of penalties? Then Andrej Doskocil is the perfect player for you. While he doesn’t jump off the charts in passing, scoring, or skating, he is a very solid d-man who makes his mark by having incredible positions, and defensive awareness beyond his years. He may be quiet on the ice, and not noticeable, but that just means that he’s doing his job well.

Likelihood his team nickname is Dredgy: 9/10

9. Hamilton Steelhawks (VIA Toronto North Stars) - Kalvins Zvejnieks

This Falcon had a pretty decent rookie season, and by the looks of things he’s looking to continue on his path of playing for bird teams. An assist heavy season is what was advertised for this player and what he achieved with his strong passing. Kalvins thrives off having good linemates, and will need to have this setup. Hamilton has been picking up a ton in this draft, so keep an eye out for him to be a feeder to some great talent down the line.

Chances I pronounce his last name correctly: 0/10. I'm not even gonna try

10. Los Angeles Panthers - Borromini Cannellini

Here he is, the best name in the draft. Rolls off the tongue and reminds me of pasta. A scorer with some solid defensive talents, Borromini looks to impress in his second SMJHL season by lighting the lamp behind his opponents while they’re too dazzled by his name. He’ll bring a nice scoring touch to the team and will be useful for those last minutes when you want to really push the pace, but also need someone defensively responsible enough to stop the other team from potting and empty netter

Number of pastas consumed daily: 7

11. Winnipeg Jets - Nick Brain

Brain’s brain went and told him growing up that the best type of hockey player for him to be was to be a well rounded winger. He has the ability to bury, skate, and handle the puck all pretty decently. Of course, of those he excels as a scorer and can outthink the goalies moves to get the puck behind them. He didn’t have the highest point total this season, but players such as him tend to take a little longer to develop. I have no reservations that he will play it smart as he goes and that he’ll go on to have a successful career in Winnipeg, and eventually slotting in on their first line.

IQ: Unfathomable.

12. New England Wolfpack - Gordie Boomhover

Are we sure that this is the right draft? This name should have been drafted about 40 years ago. He’d absolutely crush it with a thick stache and some beautiful hockey hair. That said, I guess it is the current draft and we’re looking at a teenager. Coming in from the left wing, we have an exceptionally strong scorer who has been showing a lot of promise with what he’s going to develop into. He’s already come out with a very strong 25 season, potting 12 goals in the process. Another scorer with some strong defensive play, he is a steal at the 12th pick and will go on to have a long and successful career

Boomhover: New name for bomb jumps in Ocarina of Time

13. Minnesota Chiefs (VIA Texas Renegades) - Jerry Mander
A solid checking winger willing to screw up more than just state electorates. Has a nice scoring touch and a good feel for the puck. Won’t hesitate from clocking players who try and get around them. All around, Jerry Mander will make things very tough for the other team while providing some scoring touch. This type of player will be very dangerous in the playoffs as he wears teams down night after night and frustrates them with their inability to get space. Not a great passer and will need to get better at finding the holes in the D to push the puck through to his teammates.

Show him: The Money

14. Tampa Bay Barracuda (VIA Minnesota Chiefs) - Matt Kholin

An incredible first SMJHL season for this Halifax rookie, notching 32 points for his squat with a pretty even split between goals and assist and leading the entire SMJHL in rookie scoring. This impressive showing had him a sure thing for the first round but frankly a little surprising that he’s this late. Expect him to challenge for titles as the years go on and he improves his game bit by bit. Has a lot of potential as he seems to be pushing himself towards being an elite skating playmaker. He will likely be getting another year in the SMJHL to dominate before being called up to start contributing to his SHL team. Not a checker and could use some cardio training, but in a very solid spot for future success

Not to be confused with: Colon

15. New England Wolfpack (VIA Chicago Syndicate, West Kendall Platoon) - Guy Zheng
This guy can feed the puck like there’s no tomorrow. Always able to find an open lane to feed it to his teammates, he makes incredible decisions with the puck, and that shows by the 31 point season that he put up. He’s not a very physical defenseman, tending to excel more at positioning than his checking, and probably for good reason as he is on the weaker end physically of the prospects. His offensive ability is unparalleled in the defensive draft class. Could use more work on his skating to be able to keep up in the defensive zone better since he isn’t a checker, another prospect well poised to go far in this league.

Smells like: elderberry

16. Calgary Dragons (VIA Edmonton Blizzard) - Brennan Kennedy Jr.

Heading off to Calgary, we have the Defender coming out of the Lethbridge Lions, Brennan Kennady Jr. . He is great with the puck and is designed to play those long minutes, having incredible endurance for someone in the SMJHL. He is a very adept passer who can make the first pass out of the zone or carry it should nothing be open. Neither situation should be a worry for a team as he’s comfortable doing both. Not great in terms of strength or checking, but he is able to make up for it with good zone presence, and decent skating. He could stand to improve as a skater, but it certainly isn’t bad right now. As it stands, he could stand to differentiate between his shooting and scoring a bit, as at this time he sometimes will take too long to make a decision, causing a turnover.

Hopes: Not to be the next Kennedy Jr to make an early exit
