After the Heart breaking loss to the Detroit Falcons, Halifax entered the offseason with both pride and a great deal of Questions. Of course the SHL entry draft was on very rookies mind but this team had more rookies than any other SMJHL team. They played the season with pride, distinction, and determination. They not only found themselves as one of the hotter teams at the end of the season but also a team that no one really wanted to meet in the playoffs. Not because they were this great Team full of unstoppable players, but rather because they were unpredictable. They went from 15 straight losses to battling out of last place and closing the gap with teams above them. In the playoffs they made short work of Anaheim before meeting eventual finalists Detroit. After the series was over, the Detroit Gm publicity stated “ they were beginning to worry us. They clawed back and defiantly made us think hard about how to approach the next game.”

Entering the Offseason, the big plays was the fact that the rookies would be back after the entry draft. Every team sends their newley acquired talent back for more development. So the plus side is that the rookies will make their way back to Halifax, only this time they will not be rookies any longer. The Likes fo Troy Reynolds, Matt Kholin, Jimmy Slothface, Gaspard Boone, Perry Morgan, Andrej Doskocil, and Dylan Karlsson are all pretty much guaranteed their spots back in Halifax. Goalie Mike McKorsy will also return between the Pipes last the Raiders starting Goalie. This team that has learned a ton last season will be joined by a new group of rookies making their way into the league and onto this team. Maybe a new Backup goalie in the place of Justin Willis? New wingers on the third line? New Defensman? There are questions but the answers will depend on the SMJHL draft just days away now.

It’ was a deeper draft than expected, as a sudden influx of prospects made their way across HO’s desk stamped “APPROVED”. Halifax scouts went all out to find what they needed and who would be available at certain points of the draft. It took weeks but come draft time Halifax felt like they had achieved their goal. Den Atkins, Halifax GM, even went as far as to say “ we got our players, The ones we scouted hard and wanted to get. “

Our in depth look at the new Halifax Raiders starts with a highly sought after player, and ends with an unlikely selection that may pay dividends.

1 Overall
raiders
Halifax Raiders (Via Lethbridge Lions)- Esa Parmborg @Steelhead77

Let’s be clear. This was a highly sought after player. Almost every team would have loved to pick up this player. Esa is still developing and honestly may have been a step or two behind in the showcase but the potential is sky high. The 7’0”, 350 pound Centre from Hella, Iceland is a monster to look at. His sheer size is enough to impress you. What impresses you more however is the man’s skating ability as well as his passing ability. Defensivley sound, this two-way Centre will be a force in the SHL before long. His puck Handling skill and his Shooting skill are solid but will get better with time and practice. Our guess is this young man will be leaving his mark sooner rather than later. There is a reason Halifax moved up to get this guy, i'm sure we'll see it soon.

12 Overall
raiders
Halifax Raiders - JOSEPH LARAQUE @blix900

American Born Sniping Left winger, Laraque is not the biggest player in the SMJHL. Standing 5’11” and weighing 187 pounds, this left winger packs a solid scoring talent. Besides the natural scoring ability, Joseph can move well on his skates, A solid skater who can be defensively solid and still hit a solid pass to a teammate. This sniper should get his fair share of chances to bury the puck. A little more strength is required to not get knocked off the puck to easily but that will come with some training. Laraque was a target to be an earlier pick for Halifax before they moved up for the 1st Overall pick. They were seriously excited to get Laraque in the early in the second round.

21 Overall
raiders
Halifax Raiders (Via Lethbridge Lions)- Ender Zavala @Thranduil

In need of some defence, the raiders went out and selected Swedish D man Ender Zavala. While Zavala was considered to be a later pick by most, Halifax saw his offensive upside and felt it was a good time to select an offensive defenseman. Zavala is a shooter first and passer second. Both however are second to him being solid in his own end. The Swedish prospect needs to work on some skating but his Puck Handling is solid. With a bit of training Zavala may prove that being a 3rd round pick was actually a steal, with some more overall training he may become Halifax second Powerplay specialist like countryman Dylan Karlsson.

32 Overall
raiders
Halifax Raiders - Jaguar Johnson @Shadowz1797

Shocked to see Johnson still on the board at 32, the raiders made sure he would become their property. The U.K prospect is all sniper. A disciplined, solid skater, this guy can simply shoot the puck. Solid puck handling and passing skill the main issue with Johnson is his defensive play, but that can easily be fixed in training. Bigger than Laraque, this player should also get a good amount of scoring chances and hopefully, bury a ton of them.

35 Overall
raiders
Halifax Raiders (Via St. Louis Scarecrows)- Isaiah Reece @Isaieh

Their second pick of the 4th round, Halifax again went for a offensive forward. This time they picked Canadian born centre, Isaiah Reece. 5’6” 185 pound player is an overall solid player. Defense  is in need of work but he can shoot the puck well. A solid face-off man, this guy can be a bonus to an already stocked Centre position in Halifax.

42 Overall
raiders
Halifax Raiders - Kobe Krisp @dudees75

The Final pick of the draft for the Raiders selected RightWing sniper from Canada, Kobe Krisp. A definite wild card pick for Halifax. Shooting is not a problem for Krisp but Defense needs work. Passes tend to be erratic but shows potential. Puck handling skills are solid as well as skating but both can use improvements. None of these are really issues as training can help with everything. If this player applies himself he also can be a steal in this draft but only time will tell.

Halifax Came into this Draft wanting Shoot first players and they got it. With last seasons rookies being a solid mix of playmakers and shooters, this seasons rookies will be sure to compliment theta as they begin their quest for a championship.

*** Shortly after the draft, Halifax signed German Right winger Jason Viersaitl. The issue here is defence defence defence. Skating and passing can use improvements but…..MAN CAN HE SHOOT THE PUCK!!!!! Halifax sees the potential and with training and hard work they may just have a scoring champion, but it’ll take some work.
