Ed Balls.
The oh-so famous tweet went out almost 8 years ago, in April 2011, and thus a legend was born. Every year the Twitter community comes together to celebrate the fabled day, which is being now known as Ed Balls Day. Not much has been heard from the man himself since he retired in May 2015. However he has recently resurfaced, in none other than the world of ice hockey. Being a relatively obscure sport in the UK, it's not completely sure how he got into it. But what we do know is that he is already having a ball of a time and making waves in the world of Hockey.
His hockey management career began very recently in the Season 45 playoffs of the SMJHL. The Halifax Raiders were down 3-0 to the Detroit Falcons and were clearly desperate for anything they could get. Apparently the Halifax front office could only manage to get their hands on an ex-politician. Perhaps they thought his... unusual name would instil some morale into the Halifax locker room, or maybe they had heard whispering of his hidden untapped potential. Who knows? Well we here at the Halifax Gazette do know the facts.
He was brought into the Raiders for game 4 of the round 2 series. And much to the surprise of just about everyone, won a game on his first attempt. He had done the impossible and was turning a lot of heads towards his direction. This was amplified when he did the unlikely and went and won yet another playoff game, forcing the Falcons into a sixth game. Thing were set for the Raiders to go on a reverse sweep against Detroit, but unfortunately it wasn't meant to be and Halifax were defeated.
Balls had certainly made an impression however and he was selected to run the British Isles Junior team, alongside George Zheng. While an early performance from the Brits (and Irish) looked to take them all the way to a medal, it was never meant to be. A bizarre quarter-finals round saw all 4 of the underdogs win their brackets in what can only be described as one of the strangest medal rounds in all of the tournament's history.
This didn't put the Halifax Front Office off as on his return to Nova Scotia he had a promotion waiting for him. Due to unfortunate circumstances, the ex-Co-GM of the Raiders Sloth had decided to step down. Front office saw the man who had memed the team's way into 6 games against Detroit as the perfect man to replace him. We tried to catch up with Balls to see his thoughts on the new fast paced change of career.
"It's all happened awfully quick. But I'm enjoying every second. There's a small group of Brits on the team too so it doesn't feel too much of a culture shock. We take it in turns getting our family to send out decent tea bags."
We also reached out to who he's replacing, Sloth, for a word on his thoughts on the matter. "I'm very excited to see where the team is going after Balls was named the new Halifax Co-GM. When he took over as coach our team chemistry immediately increased, so I have no doubt that he will work the same magic as Co-GM and turn the Raiders into a powerhouse." Nothing but good words from the ex-Co-GM. Over-exaggeration? We think so.
Ed Balls was announced to the press by Head-GM Dean Atlk. "We are proud to announce the addition to our Management team. Our new Co-GM is Mister Ed Balls . We are proud to have balls on our staff to help lead the way, he is an excellent communicator and we believe he has the ability to help lead this team to its' ultimate goal. Welcome Mister Balls." Captain Dominic Montgomery was also on hand to give his thoughts. "We were fortunate to get to work with Balls for WJC, so having him come in here makes it an easier transition at least for a couple of us. We're lucky to have him here."
Balls will need some serious... Courage to help lead Halifax to a cup this season. Let's hope they can finally do something with themselves.
