Colorado Raptors vs Anaheim Outlaws

Game 31 of the season saw the visiting Colorado Raptors take on the Anaheim Outlaws. This was their second meeting of the season with the Outlaws taking the first match 5-1, also at home. Coming into this game the Raptors have a 1-5 records, were the Outlaws aren’t doing much better at 1-2-2. Let’s get down to rink side to get ready for the action.

The Starting lines were:
Colorado  Raptors : Jakub Novak – Knute Knurtsson – Nick Brain  Raptors
Cassius Darrow – Jules Watt

Anaheim  Outlaws : Collin Gibbles – Kristers Dzelme – Hiro Fujikawa  Outlaws
Mathias Seger – Osbert Whacker

Starting goalies for tonight were Yuri Ushakov for Colorado and Tibuk Soonika for Anaheim.

First Period

The first period starts off pretty uneventful with Anaheim dominating the possession and shots on goal. Some early faceoff wins for Anaheim led to a chance for Hiro Fujikawa but Yuri stood tall. The first real and only action of the first period comes at 16:18 were we have matching penalties. It appears Nick Brain was holding Slap McShotty, but Slap decided to embellish the hold a bit to much and went off for a Diving minor. Alas, nothing would come of these penalties in the first. Shots on goal 5-4 Anaheim in the first.

Second Period

The second period starts off with an Outlaw faceoff win. They are continuing to control the play in the second before a Mathias Seger penalty at 15:28, which leads to a PP goal from Knute Knurtsson, just at the PP expires. It doesn’t take to long though for the Outlaws to respond on a goal from Collin Gibbles at 9:21. With less than 2 mins remaining in the period an Interference penalty on Jake Peralta leads to a PP opportunity by Anaheim. Jaco Peterman cashes in here with a PP goal via a deflected shot from Max Rockatansky with only about 30 seconds remaining in the period.  Anaheim leads 2-1 going in to the third with the shots being 14-9 in favor of Anaheim.

Goal Recap:
Raptors Colorado Raptors , Knute Knurtsson (Cassius Darrow, Jakub Novak) at 7:21 (PP)
Outlaws Anaheim Outlaws , Collin Gibbles (Hiro Fujikawa, Milo Momoka) at 11:39
Outlaws  Anaheim Outlaws , Jaco Petermen (Max Rockatansky, Seemu Telanne) at 19:29 (PP)

Third Period

The third period was all Anaheim, with a few Raptor mistakes leading to chances for the Outlaws. Back to back Raptor penalties by Jules Watt and Jakub Novak, led to an onslaught of Outlaw chances.  The Outlaws were able to convert on both of these power plays. Both Osbert Whacker and Max Rockatansky were able to get on the board converting on those Raptor mistakes late in the third period.

Goal Recap:
Outlaws Anaheim Outlaws , Osbert Whacker (Hiro Fujikawa, Kristers Dzelme) at 18:17 (PP)
Outlaws Anaheim Outlaws , Max Rockatansky (Collin Gibbles, Mathias Seger) at 18:43 (PP)

Final Score:

Anaheim 4 - Colorado 1

Three Stars
1 - Max Rockatansky  Outlaws
2 - Collin Gibbles  Outlaws
3 - Hiro Fujikawa  Outlaws

Notes: Anaheim was 3 for 4 on the Power Play and 2 for 3 on the Penalty Kill.
Faceoffs were about even with the Raptors winning 3 more FO opportunities than the Outlaws.
Hiro Fujikawa, Mathias Seger, and Thomas Speardane (ANA) and Loki Odinsson (COL) all picked up penalties as well.
Shots on goal were in favor of Anaheim 22 to 17.

Jesus fuck these two teams are absolutely atrocious, they don't even know what they're doing. There's a reason why these guys are in the SMJHL and that's because they are straight up garbage. I would be surprised if these guys makes it in the SHL. Parker Smeb had an absolutely atrocious game. This guy is so bad, D-prospect. I tried so hard to find where he was on the ice, I don't think a telescope would even find him. He's tiny. Martinjs Weisbrok, was also terrible. If I were the SHL GMs that drafted these shit players, I would probably just step down now.

TSN TURNING POINT

Game 31 of the SMHJL S46 season brought together the Colorado Raptors and the Anaheim Outlaws. This game was a tight fought one until pretty much the 3rd period but one aspect stuck out in this game which could easily be determined the turning point in it. It was easily the special teams that made a vast difference in the game, as even though Colorado was able to net the first goal of the game on the man advantage, it was Anaheim who ultimately rode the momentum of their special teams to victory and they were able to go 3 for 4 on the Power Play and a 2 for 3 on the penalty kill. In the end its was just too much for the Raptors to handle and the Outlaws took the game easily 4 to 1.

The Highlights

The Raptors took and early lead on the Outlaws with a nice goal from Knute Knurtsson, who was able to fire one past Tibuk Soonika with a sensational effort on the rebound...

With just 30 second remaining in the 2nd period, Jaco Petermen was able to give the Outlaws the lead on the Power Play, as he ripped one top shelf...

The 3rd period was all Anaheim after they added 2 more goals, but it was all started with a  huge stop from Soonika...

MVP of the game

Max Rockatansky

Even though tonight's game didn't have the tight checking game many were expecting, and it leaned more on the special teams, one player did stand out among the rest and had him self an impressive night. Max Rockatansky found his name twice on the score sheet as he potted a goal and added 1 helper to go along with it. Rockatansky also added 4 shots on the night and was a weapon all night for the Outlaws. The biggest play he probably made all night was setting up Petermen for the game winning goal late in the 2nd period. It was the turning point that the Outlaws needed to run away with the rest of the game.

Special Teams:
There were seven power plays on nine penalties in the game. Most expected a more finesse game as a result of younger less developed players playing a less physical game, combined with the experienced bruising leaders that have a higher discipline. Both teams have notable special teams statistics, the Raptors having the most lethal power play unit, operating at just above 24% efficiency, and the Outlaws’ penalty kill, neutralizing the oppositions extra attacker in 85% of attempts. Inversely, the Outlaws have almost a 20% power play, and the Raptors just below an 83% kill. Both power play units earned notches tonight (COL: 1 of 3, ANA: 3 of 4), and it all began after a Mathias Seger hooking minor 5 minutes in.

Goalie Play vs. Shot Volume:
Anaheim’s Tibuk Soonika and Colorado’s Yuri Ushakov allowed only one even-strength goal for the duration of the game.  Tibuk’s work was cut out for him by a stifling defense, lead by Osbert Whacker who churned out 23 minutes on the ice for his club, and Thomas Speardane who blocked two shots and registered 2 hits. The Outlaws’ defensive unit only allowed 17 shots to reach the cage, including on the power play. Across the Ice, Ushakov allowed only 4 goals on 22 shots. While the majority were registered during the power play, the statistics sheet is blind a ruthless as it notches Ushakov’s 6th loss of the season through just 7 games. The Raptor’s lead the league in shots allowed on net per game, and will likely need a strategy or goalie change if they hope to keep Ushakov mentally fresh for a potential playoff push.

Game Film is Never As Bad As You Think:
After any loss at any level, small battles that were lost in the contest will haunt a players mind. After a win, small victories are glorified as the dopamine rush mixes with the Budweiser, or whatever the rookies brought that day. Watching game film afterward is the most humanizing aspect of the game, as coaches point out “Yea, the score was bad, but look at what we did right” or “You think you’re hot shit? Look what would have happened if the other team hadn’t messed up”. It is truly humbling to know that no matter what the simulation churns out, both teams were a few big breaks away from the score sheet reading the opposite and the Budweiser tasting differently. A winner who will get bag skated: Slap McShotty for taking a diving penalty early in the first, neutralizing a holding minor. A loser who is moving in the right direction: Ja’Aj Coitus-Wagg for his efforts in the faceoff dot. While his turnover led to the only even-strength goal, one way to combat those protected minutes is by continuing to go 6 for 8 after frozen pucks.

Comment One - First Round Focus:
In this segment, we will break down the impact that each team's first-round selection from the S46 draft had on today's game.
Raptors Juulius Smonk (LW)
Juulius played a fairly unnoticeable game for the Raptors today, which can be considered a good thing since they lost 4-1. Smonk was placed on the second line alongside two dangerously skilled sophomores in Michael Scarn and Parker Smeb. Juulius recorded 0 points, had a shot and a hit, and played a total of 15:10 minutes. All things said and done this was a below average game for the rookie, and if he hopes to continue to play alongside this offensive talent he must improve.
Outlaws Corey Kennedy (D)
Corey also had a minimal impact on the outcome of today's game which can be expected from a rookie of this caliber. Kennedy slotted in on the second defensive pair next to an inactive 4th year player in Thomas Speardane. Kennedy also recorded 0 points but played solid defensively while he was on the ice recording 1 hit, 1 shot during his 18:33 minutes played. Similar to his counterpart on the Raptors, Kennedy should be expected to pick up the contributions offensively throughout the season in order to keep his spot on the depth chart.
Comment Two - Who was Hot?
Forward of the Game -  Outlaws Max Rockatansky
Max was named the first star of the game after an excellent performance on the second line for the Outlaws. He had a goal on four shots and an assist, on offense, and then 3 hits and a blocked shot defensively. Rockatansky was an essential cog in the gears that make up the Outlaws' powerplay tonight.
Defenseman of the Game -  Outlaws Milo Momoka and Gustav Steen
The Outlaw's third pairing of defencemen saw sheltered minutes and were playing extremely defensive roles during today's game. Despite that fact, this pairing was on the ice for the even-strength goal that tied the game up in the second period, with Milo getting an assist. Quality depth defense is hard to find in the SMJHL, but Anaheim as it right here on display.
Goaltender of the Game -  Outlaws Tibuk Soonika
Facing only 17 shots may not warrant goalie of the game for Tibuk in everyone's books, but that's a kudo to the strong defense mentioned above. He still saved all but one of those shots for a .941 save %, which is definitely above average in the SMJHL.
Comment Three - Who was Not?
Liable Forward of the Game -  Raptors Ja'Aj Coitus-Wagg and co.
Colorado's 3rd line was abysmal on both ends of the ice in today's game. None of them recorded a single point offensively, during even strength or on the powerplay. Meanwhile, they were on the ice for Anaheim's one even-strength goal which added to the damage of the result.
Liable Defenseman of the Game -  Raptors Cassius Darrow and Jules Watt
The defensemen for the Raptors that are supposed to be the best and most reliable of the three pairings had a rather poor showing today. Darrow recorded one power play assist but this pairing was on the ice for the Outlaw's even-strength goal, which showed their imperfect performance on the back-end.
Liable Goaltender of the Game -  Raptors Yuri Ushakov
Yuri was the primary reason for Colorado's losing outing today, as the defenseman held the Raptors to just 22 shots and he managed to let 4 of those past him. He can thank the team's poor discipline since 3 of the goals were on the powerplay, but still, with this few shots, you would expect a better performance from the team.

Top 3 Gritters of the Game
1. Nick Brain (COL) - The starting winger for the Raptors was lighting up the opposition on the ice, collecting 5 hits in a physical performance. He received 2 PIMs, but they were for holding, which is a minus on our scale.
2. Max Rockatansky (ANA) - This center has a decent game from a grit point of view, collecting 3 hits. He was absolutely terrible in the faceoff circle, going 8/23, and had no PIMs, which is disappointing.
3. Anastasia O'Koivu (COL) - The sophomore blueliner collected 3 hits, but nothing else. As a defender, where are the blocks? Where's the PIMs for roughing up the opposition? She was better than the rest of the players though, so she gets 3rd.

Tony's Stars of the game:

1. Max Rockatansky (ANA) - Max was a great player in this game, scoring a goal and an assist, but also throwing shots out, and throwing big hits as well. A great all round performance from him for first star

2. Nick Brain (COL) - Nick was a beast this game, throwing out 5 hits. The Anaheim players looked scared to come out on the ice after Nick Brain was throwing them all over the place. He picked up a minor for holding, however, when he grabbed a player by the balls.

3. Hiro Fujikawa (ANA) - Hiro was a real hero this game for Anaheim, not only setting up 2 of their goals but also firing shots and generally keeping the defense on their toes. A solid performance earns him my 3rd star.

Audi Star of the Game: Max Rockatansky Outlaws
Tonight's Audi Star of the Game is none other than Anaheim's Max Rockatansky. Mad Max made the most of his limited ice time tonight with a goal, an assist, 4 shots on goal, a blocked shot and 3 hits. If that wasn't impressive enough, both of Rockatansky's points came on the power play with his assist being a beautiful feed to Jaco Petermen on what would end up being the game winning goal. Mad Max has been a force all season as he has proved to be a mismatch for other team's 3rd liners and tonight was a perfect example of Anaheim taking advantage of that mismatch to win the game.

Tide Flop of the Game: Jules Watt Raptors
Colorado's Jules Watt gets the (not so much) honour of being tonight's Tide Flop of the Game. Watt went pointless and was a -1 with the 2nd most ice time on the team tonight as he was ineffective for much of the game and was unable to shutdown Anaheim's forwards well. Watt also took the first of the two penalties that put the Raptors down 5 on 3 and resulted in two Anaheim goals late in the third period to put the game out of reach.Watt's 2 minutes and 46 seconds on the power play were also ineffective as he came up empty with no power play points to his name. It was a rough outing for Watt who the Raptors need at the top of his game if they want to start winning more games and climb out of the league's basement.

Tesla Key to the Game: Special Teams
Tonight's Tesla Key to the Game is a classic key that always plays a huge role in the outcome of hockey games. Special Teams. The two teams were close in shots and for most of the game were close in score as well but when it came down to it, special teams made the difference for Anaheim as they scored three power play goals on four attempts, including two goals on a 5 on 3 late in the third period to increase their lead from 1 goal to 3 goals and put this game to bed. Anaheim were also great on the penalty kill going 2 for 3 and not allowing Anaheim to tie up the game with their other power plays after having taken the lead early in the first period on their first power play of the night. The two teams were much closer tonight than the final score suggests but when it came down to it, Anaheim's special teams for the job done for them to help them win this game.

Comment #3:

We're going to talk about a couple factors that were huge in determining the outcome of today's 4-1 Outlaws win over the Raptors:

Smeb-Less: We're going to dip a bit into analytics here in order to determine one of the factors that allowed the Outlaws to prosper. Looking over the roster chart for the Outlaws, they dressed exactly 0 Smebs for tonight's game. Looking over the roster chart for the Raptors, they dressed exactly 1 Smeb for tonight's game. Anaheim won tonight's game and did not have a Smeb on the ice. Therefore, Smeb's put you at a disadvantage for winning games. Facts.

Penalty Killity Inability: The Outlaws went 3 for 4 on the powerplay tonight. Now, I don't have the exact footage here so I can't determine if they were playing 5 v 1 on the ice or if the Raptors decided to go with an all Stevie Wonder line, but regardless they're gonna need to rethink their strategy. Purely atrocious showing here tonight.
