VAN CITY GETS RETRIBUTION

raiders Halifax Raiders 2 | 4 Vancouver Whalers Whalers

Scoring Summary & Recap

Period 1:

0:30 Whalers goal scored by Petr Mikulak (Bernik Vrzala, Borromini Cannellini) Whalers
Vancouver started this game fast despite having lost the opening faceoff against Halifax's first line. Raiders center Matt Kholin missed a shot on net allowing an easy 3 way pass from Whalers center Cannellini to defencemen Vrzala, inevitably leading to a break out pass for left wing Mikulak. Vancouver scored on their first shot of the game.
5:07 Raiders goal scored by Jaguar Johnson (Ricardo Cotalay, Esa Parmborg) raiders
Halifax center Gaspard Boone came up big for the Raiders in a neutral tie up allowing winger Parmborg to gain control of the puck. With a quick pass back to Dman Cotalay and an even faster pass forward to Johnson the Raiders were able to secure space on the wing leading into the tying goal.
12:38 Whalers goal scored by Cullen Gray (Petr Mikulak, Borromini Cannellini) Whalers
Vancouvers last goal of the first period and go ahead goal was very reminiscent of the goal that started this game off. With an easy defensive zone tie up against the Raiders third line Cannellini managed to find winger Petr Mikulak, who in turn found rookie and line mate Cullen Gray streaking down the right wing side towards Raider territory. Gray unleashed a deadly wrist shot that streaked over goalie Mike mcKorsy's left shoulder.
Period 2:

No Goals

Period 3:

3:26 Whalers goal scored by Borromini Cannellini (Petr Mikulak, Joe Ackroyd) Whalers
This goal was not easy to come by for the Whalers. It all started with a defencive zone pick up after a Raiders missed shot. 2 Whalers were hit by defenceman Ender Zavala before they eventually made it into the Raiders zone. Some heavy cycling between Whalers defencemen Jax Duggan and Joe Ackroyd then broke into a pass to a guarded Petr Mikulak. Mikulak took the shot and missed the net, however Cannellini was waiting on the other side for an easy tap in.
5:00 Raiders goal scored by Mr. Faceoffs (Joeseph Laraque, Andrej Doskocil) raiders
This goal could not have happened without a series of unfortunate events for both sides. Passes were intercepted no less than 3 times on this play before it was finally recoverd by Doskocil for Halifax. Doskocil passed to an open Laraque who wired it towards the net with Faceoffs screening Stevens, with an easy deflection the goal was counted for Faceoffs.
19:51 Whalers goal (EN) Egor Kucherov (Borromini Cannellini, William Goose) Whalers
Kucherov both started and ended this play in separate ends of the ice. Halifax had pulled their goalie just after a Whalers penalty had expired to maintain the man advantage, needing a change Kholin dumped the puck into the Whalers end where Kucherov recovered the puck. Getting the puck up ice to Goose who then gave the puck to Cannellini advancing up the left side. Cannellini took a shot through traffic and unfortunately missing the wide open net. Similar to the opening goal of the period however Kucherov was ready and waiting on the opposite side unopposed waiting for the easy tap in once the puck had come off the boards.
3rd Star

Cullen Gray (1-0-1) Whalers
Gray's +- secured him the spot as the third star in this game. Despite not being able to assist in his lines devastation this game he did get the go ahead goal at the end of the first period to boost his teams moral heading into the break. Gray ended the night with 1 goal, +3 and a 51% faceoff percentage.
2nd Star

Petr Mikulak (1-2-3) Whalers
Petr was one of the more dominant players of this game, easilly earning the 2nd star tonight. Finishing the game with 1 goal, 2 assists, a 3 plus/minus and a 33 shooting percentage Mikulak has secured himself as someone to be watched in games to come.
1st Star

Borrowmini Cannellini (1-3-4) Whalers
There really is no suprise here, leading the league in goals Cannellini showed us his play making side in this game. Cannellini finished the night with 1 goal and 3 assists for an easy +4 rating, he also ended the night with a 51% faceoff tally.

Comment 1: Vancouver Avenges Losses
A season series that, prior to this game, was 2-0 in favor of Halifax. The rivalry between the Halifax Raiders and the Vancouver Whalers goes beyond the ice, which can be sprinkled across the SMJHL media. Whether it be a post-game confrontation, or the respective media trying to get under opposing players' skins, there is always something happening between these two teams.

Vancouver looked hungry to avenge those early season losses to the Raiders, and it showed with an early goal 30 seconds in to the first period. While the Raiders would eventually tie it up, the Whalers were determined to take this game and they held on to bring the season series to 2-1 in favor of Halifax.

Comment 2: Special Teams
This is where the league's best teams separate themselves from the rest of the pack. Seizing your opportunity with the man advantage, or getting a big defensive boost with a penalty kill could make the difference. Both powerplays posted a goose egg (Whalers 0 for 3 / Raiders 0 for 6). However, was it poor powerplays or exceptional penalty killing? I would say a mixture of both.

The Whalers posted 12 blocked shots as a team, contributing greatly to the PK success. Laying the body on the line to ensure the win. While the PK looked good, Luke was not happy with the amount of penalties taken by his team and it is an area of focus to stay disciplined. However, on the Raiders side of the puck, they let golden opportunities slip with the missed opportunities. Your top players need to step up when needed most, which unfortunately was not the case.

Comment 3: First Line Difference
In tight games you need your best players to step up to the plate which was only the case for one team tonight. The Whalers first line of Cannellini, Mikulak, and Gray combined for 10 points while also going +10. At the opposite end of the ice the Raiders' first line of Reynolds, Kohlin, and Slothface put up a combined 0 points and went -5. Not the type of stat line you'd expect to see from players who have a lot to say off the ice.

Cannellini continued his impressive season with a huge game, having his hand in each of Vancouver's goals. The Raiders could not contain the speed and skill of the Whalers' first line, which skated circles around them all night, taking advantage of their dominant 5 on 5 play. The first line has been Vancouver's biggest weapon, and they once again lead them to victory. This could be problematic if the first line decides to take a night off, but on a night where revenge was on their minds, they came to play.

Vancouver Goalie
Casimir Stevens is always someone that you can depand on to be an important player for his team, but I don't think anyone was really expecting the performance that he had tonight. After facing 31 shots on net, Stevens managed to put up and extremely impressive 29 shots blocked for his team which was good for a save percentage of 93.5%. When you have a goalie that puts up numbers like this, you obviously want to make sure that you make the most of it and the Whalers certainly did tonight as he backstopped them to the win.

Halifax Goalie
Mike McKorsy is a guy who many people in the league have pegged as one of the top goaltenders, but his performance tonight certainly did air out that opinion very well as he had an absolutely hideous performance in between the pipes for the Raiders. With only 26 shots on net all night, McKorsky managed to let in three of those shots and posted a save percentage below 90.0% which is absolutely monstrous for a goaltender in a league as highly coveted as this. If McKorsky wants to be seriously considered for a top level position someday, changes will need to be made.

The Comparison
I don't think it's necessarily fair to compare these two goaltenders in this game, because while both of them are incredible netminders, they didn't both manage to show that. While Stevens stood on his head in the net for the Whalers and backstopped them to the win, his defense was considerably weaker and allowed more shots. In comparison, McKorsky had a worse performance, AND saw less shots in net placing a lot of the blame on him for this loss. Obviously you're going to have a bad game from time to time, but every single game is important in this league and McKorsky cannot afford to forget it.

Top 3 Gritters of the Game
1. Igor Volkov (VAN) - The rookie blueliner had himself a solid performance, with 4 hits, leading all players. Collected a block, too. He had 2 PIMs, but they were for holding.
2. Jax Duggan (VAN) - The rookie may have only had one hit and two blocks, but by God did he come through in the PIMs department. 4 PIMs, both for aggressive and physical fouls (roughing and boarding, that is). Fantastic, glad to finally see someone playing aggressively.
3. Joe Ackroyd (VAN) - Alright, I normally wouldn't give someone with no hits a spot, but this man put his body on the line tonight. 5 shots blocked. Outstanding.

Comment 2: Red Hot First Line
Vancouver's top line consisting of Petr Mikulak, Borromini Cannellini and Cullen Gray combined for 8 points and 3 goals. The line was red hot tonight getting all of Vancouver's goals except for the empty net goal scored at the end of the game by Egor Kucherov. The line also managed a combined +/- of 10 and put a total of 13 shots on net, that's half of Vancouver's total shots. Tonight was a good night for the first line to be hot as the rest of the lines weren't having their best games, but luckily for Vancouver, the timing worked out and they pulled out ahead. If you can get your first line to show up like that every game you'd be in a very good spot.

Comment 3: Three Stars
Third Star: Cullen Gray (VAN)
Although Gray didn't manage to put up as many points as his linemates he still had a great night with a goal, three shots and finished the game with a +/- of 3.

Second Star: Petr Mikulak (VAN)
Mikulak had a great night along with the rest of his linemates - as you can see from the three stars - getting himself a goal and a pair of assists. He finished the game with 3 shots on goal and a +/- of 3.

First Star: Borromini Cannellini (VAN)
Overall Vancouver's first line had a great night, but none better than Cannellini. Managing to get a goal and 3 assists, 7 shots on net, a +/- of 4, and playing 6 and a half minutes on the penalty kill. You really couldn't ask for much more from your top line center.

Comment #2:

Power-less Play: The major story from tonight was the teams' power play, or lack thereof. Halifax was gifted a total of 6 powerplay opportunities and came up empty with a big old zero on the board. Vancouver wasn't much better, also putting up a big old zero on a total of 3 opportunities. Vancouver luckily came out on top, driving play at 5 on 5 to take the 4-2 win but you'd have to think Halifax is kicking itself right now. That's 6 opportunities to put up 2 goals and get this game at least to overtime and grab a point. You gotta hope this doesn't come back to haunt them later this season as the SMJHL race is tight now and they're battling for the top spot with Anaheim among other teams. On the other hand, not all special teams were bad as their penalty kills were perfect. There's a silver lining to everything, back to you in the studio John!

Snake-bitten Player of the Night

Gaspard Boone wins our snake-bitten player of the night award in this game. He led the Raiders with 4 shots on goal as well as 3 shots or deflections that missed the net altogether. Why do we track the missed shots as well? You can't score if you don't hit the net folks. Not only do you not create a scoring chance, but you also cough up the puck and give the other team possession generally. This seemed to be extremely detrimental to the Raiders in tonights game as they of course lost. He did make up for it in the faceoff circle winning 9 out of 14, but this does not make up for the lack of offense he provided.

Brick Wall Award

Casimir Stevens was absolutely lights out in this game. Boasting a 93.5% save percentage and only allowing two goals on 31 shots, he was the difference maker in this game for the Whalers. What should have been a close game was not due to the goaltending of Stevens here. The Whalers were outshot 26-31 in this game and unfortunately for the Raiders goaltender Mike McKorsky did not play his best in this game. This win put Vancouver at 7-3 on the season helping them pass Halifax in the standings. Casimir Stevens didn't make the 3 stars here, but he definitely should have with his performance.

Three Stars

1 - Borromini Cannellini (VAN) - Cannellini absolutely lit up the Raiders tonight scoring a goal and adding three assists on the night. He factored into every single one of the Whaler's goals tonight. No easy feat.

2 - Petr Mikulak (VAN) - Mikulak factored in heavily for Vancouver tonight potting in a goal and pitching in with two additional assists. He's also relied upon heavily on the penalty kill where he had nearly five minutes of PKTOI.

3 - Cullen Gray (VAN) - Gray came in as the third star tonight due to his go ahead goal in the first period. Coming at the 12:38 mark of the 1st, this momentum helped push Vancouver into the second with a lead.
