Montreal Rises Above Kelowna in Shootout Win

Militia Montreal Militia 3 - 2 Kelowna Knights Knights

Scoring Summary

1st Period:
8:17 - Montreal Goal - Kristoffer Svensson 5 (Mason Hudson 3) -  Militia 1 - 0  Knights
After an icing call against the Knights, Kristoffer Svensson won a face-off for the Militia in their offensive zone. The puck found its way back to Mason Hudson, who fired a shot that went wide of the net. The puck ricocheted off the boards and slid back out into the slot. After winning the face-off, Svensson went right to the crease and found himself in the right place at the right time as the loose puck came off the boards and right onto his stick. A swift wrist shot had the puck in the back of the net before Kelowna's goaltender even knew Svensson had possession.

2nd Period:

No Scoring

3rd Period:
7:37 PPG - Kelowna Goal - Nickolas Klaus 2 (Nolan Sawchuk 2, Bobby Sharp 4) -  Militia 1 - 1  Knights
Montreal's Oliver Klozoff was called for holding at the 7:29 mark of the third period. The Knights took just eight seconds on the power play to make Montreal pay for the lack of discipline. Nickolas Klaus started the play by winning the offensive zone face-off for Kelowna. The Knights then cycled the puck, displaying an incredible amount of passing skill. Bobby Sharp found Nolan Sawchuk down the wing, who threw a perfect saucer pass across the crease to Klaus who buried it top shelf with a vicious one-timer.

12:55 - Montreal Goal - Andreas Kvalheim 7 (Mason Hudson 4, Kristoffer Svensson 7) -  Militia 2 - 1  Knights
Montreal started off a furious attack on goal with an offensive zone face-off win by Kristoffer Svensson. The Militia then cycled the puck around the zone, finally getting it to Chuck Crutchfield who sent a shot that would start an onslaught of shots by Montreal. Kelowna scrambled defensively as the Militia fired off five successive shots, three of which missed the net and one of which was saved by the goaltender. Every loose puck fell to a Militia player who fired it right back towards the goal. Finally, Hudson shot a puck low towards the goalie's five-hole which was deflected by Andreas Kvalheim up over the goalie's shoulder and into the back of the net.

19:33 - Kelowna Goal - Bobby Sharp 5 (Karlstrabe Scholz 7, Nickolas Klaus 4) -  Militia 2 - 2  Knights
With only thirty-three seconds remaining in regulation, Kelowna's Bobby Sharp struck for his fifth goal of the season to tie the game. With time ticking down quickly, the Knights pulled goaltender Vivian Leblanc from the net for the extra attacker. Kelowna passed their way into their offensive zone and cycled the puck to Karlstrabe Scholz. Scholz shot the puck wide of the net, which then bounced back out in front of the net and onto the stick of Bobby Sharp. Sharp found himself staring at an open net as the goaltender scrambled to slide across the crease. Keeping his composure, Sharp scored to tie the game and force overtime.

Top 3 Gritters of the Game
1. Nathan Explosion (KEL) - Alright, Montreal was completely physically dominated during the game, and Explosion was a big factor in that. 5 hits on the night, leader among his team that dominated in the hit department. 2 PIMs as well, but for hooking, so, a minus.
2. Pierre Laroche-Durocher (KEL) - Not sure how to pronounce his name, but he had 4 hits on the night, another solider contributor to the physical dominance of Kelowna. 2 PIMs, but for holding. Sigh.
3. Nickolas Klaus (KEL) - The center had 3 hits in the game, no PIMs, and was absolutely obliterated in the faceoff circle. 13/31. Terrible.

Goalie Recap:
Comment 1:
Aleksi O'Koivu-Volkova continues his impressive season with adding a shootout win on top of his 7-1 record. AOKV looked impeccable between the pipes in the first two periods. Wasn't until the 3rd where a powerplay goal snuck past him early and then subsequently a late tying goal sent it into OT. AOKV went to the bench before OT, muttered some foreign words towards his trainer and they ran into the locker room to bring back a weird glass bottle with tape on top saying "geiturade". Rumor is it was a heavy cocktail of vodka mixed with gin and a splash of rum but we will never know. Nonetheless, AOKV shot back into his crease and was an absolute brick wall for the remainder of overtime. Only Nathan Explosion was able to beat him in shootouts but that meant nothing since Hans Zucker converted for MTL while Bobby Sharp was dull in his attempt and was stoned by AOKV to close out the game.

Comment 2:
Vivian Leblanc on the other hand continues his mediocre season by tacking on a shootout loss to his 2-3-3 season. Leblanc was far from blanking his opponents in this match up but he did look up to par in the second period stopping all 3 shots that went his way. To be honest, I think we need to give the man some credit for staying awake through that. Nonetheless, MTL came back in the 3rd and upped their shooting 300% with 9 SOG, one which Leblanc let through. They went into OT then shootout, but Leblanc fell short with Hans Zucker beating him in the 4th round of SO.

Shootout highlights:
Comment 3:
Montreal Militia, Andreas Kvalheim - Stopped by Vivian Leblanc -- Leblanc stops the first attempt against him by Andreas Kvalheim by the skin of his teeth. The crowd thought he was beat for sure when the puck slipped between his wickets but he managed to clip it with the back of his foot and send the puck wide.

Kelowna Knights, Nathan Explosion - Goal! Nathan Explosion sneaks goal past AOKV with an explosive snap shot down the middle of the ice, sending the puck between the wickets right into the net. AOKV was stunned by his quick release and looked back in disbelief to see the puck in the back of the net.

Kelowna Knights, Bobby Sharp - Stopped by Aleksi O'Koivu-Volkova -- AOKV comes up with a gnarly last second save to stone Bobby Sharp. The Kelowna fans stood up with their mouths wide open ready to celebrate the tying goal to push the shooutout to the 5th round until AOKV's geiturade came into full effect and stoned Bobby Sharp with that last second kick.

Tony's stars of the game:

1.Bobby Sharp Knights :Bobby was so nearly the hero of this game, pulling Kelowna back to overtime in the last 30 seconds. Alas it was not to be, but for what could have been he gets my first star. (He also posted an assist on Kelowna's first)

2.Chuck Crutchfield  Militia : Chuck was great, posting 3 shots blocked, but the real reason he got my second star was the roughing penalty he picked up in the second for giving Bobby Sharp a strong tap on the balls when he interfered with Chuck (both were called penalties).

3. Nikolas Klaus  Knights  :Nikolas played a great game, he posted a goal and an assist on Kelowna's two goals, but also threw out 3 hits, which I like. I thought it was a solid performance and a disappointing loss.

Face-offs
Looking at the game statistics, it is notable how much Montreal dominated Kelowna in the face-off circle. Montreal won 53 while Kelowna only won 33. Dominating in this category doesn't automatically lead to a win, but let's look in detail which role face-offs played in the game. How important are face-offs?
The first goal was scored by Kristoffer Svensson (MTL) at 8:17 in the first period just seconds after he himself won a face-off vs Vadim Malichov (KEL). Svensson also lead his team by winning 53% of the face-offs he took in this game (not big surprise considering his overall numbers in this category). Malichov, one of Kelowna's rookies, lost 60% of his face-offs which roughly correlates to his stats throughout the season. The next goal, scored by Nickolas Klaus at 7:37 of third period came after he himself won a face-off vs Svensson this time, even though Svensson is statistically stronger (Klaus only won 42% of his face-offs), but it's worth adding that this goal happened on the PP. Goal number three, scored by Andreas Kvalheim (MTL), didn't come immediately after a face-off, but again Svensson was involved in the offensive zone face-off prior to the goal and won it against Aleksandr Scherbak (who lost the majority of his face-offs in this game btw). Svensson added an assist to his overall strong game. Kelowna's second goal, scored by Bobby Sharp just seconds before the end of the game (that lead the game to OT), didn't happen directly after a face-off, but Kelowna had just pulled their goalie.
We see that winning face-offs can help, especially when you're already in the offensive zone, but absolutely doesn't guarantee a goal or change the outcome of the game.

Unsung Hero

A shootout game, a low scoring one at that. Then we'll go my speciality, SHots blocked and Hits, hehe. I'm going to give this one to the Kelowna Knights player Pierre Laroche-Durocher. Not only because double names are cool, but because he did a bunch. He had 4 hits, which is second most in the game. He also blocked a shot, which is of course a nice thing to do, sacrificing that sweaty body for your team. He was a +/-0 when half the team were -1, and he played a bunch of minutes. Not a lot of special team minutes tho, about a minute on the PK and 8 seconds on the powerplay, lol.

Turning Point:

The turning point of the game was definitely the penalty to Oliver Klozoff in the 3rd period. The game was tight and kelowna had been shooting and shooting all game long but had nothing to show for it, then Oliver Klozoff decided to grab a hold of Söderbergs nutsack, which definitely must have hurt. However he only recieved a minor penalty which was bullshit. Kelowna woke up after this though and decided that their aim was really good and managed to score 2 goals in the third period, despite only shooting 4 shots. Now that's impressive! That is definitely worthy of being called the turning point of the game.
