PGS S46 Game 44: Anchorage vs Halifax
#1

Halifax Continues to Soar by Defeating Anchorage 5-3

raiders Halifax Raiders 5 - 3 Anchorage Armada Armada

Scoring Summary

1st Period:
1. Halifax Raiders , Tobias Viklund 4 (Joseph Laraque 6, Dominic Montgomery 6) at 1:04
raiders 1 - 0 Armada

Halifax started the period off with the best of intentions, shooting and scoring against Anchorage often and with gusto. Dominic Montgomery went along the far side with the puck, passing it over to Joseph Laraque who put a weak shot on net, but thankfully for the Raiders it was Tobias Viklund who was able to knock down the rebound.

2. Anchorage Armada , Kalevi Karhunen 2 (Maxime Bouchard 5, Johnny Sins 5) at 8:01 (PP)
raiders 1 - 1 Armada

Despite Halifax's best efforts, the Armada were somehow able to dominate possession enough to pot a goal of their own on the powerplay. It was Johnny Sins to Maxime Bouchard who sent it off to Kalevi Karhunen and put it top corner to tie the game.

3. Anchorage Armada , Dean Colt III 4 (Xena 2, Leopold Lockhart 8) at 13:42 (PP)
raiders 1 - 2 Armada

Even with only a couple shots on net, the Armada were poised to take care of business again, and were able to do just that with their other powerplay unit. Dean Colt III from Xena and Leopold Lockhart buried it through a screen and to the surprise of everyone the Armada had the lead.

4. Halifax Raiders , Dylan Karlsson 4 (Troy Reynolds 3, Mr. Faceoffs 6) at 17:13 (PP)
raiders 2 - 2 Armada

Despite their best efforts the Armada were unable to hold their lead for the rest of the period, as Halifax was able to get their own powerplay, as Mr. Faceoffs won the draw to Troy Reynolds and his shot was deflected by Dylan Karlsson for his fourth of the season.

2nd Period:

5. Anchorage Armada , Spencer MacLean 2 (Xena 3, Tucker Baloo 2) at 3:25
raiders 2 - 3 Armada

Anchorage was able to get their act together early in the second period, getting a multitude of shots on the net. Spencer MacLean scored his second of the season from Xena (again!) and Tucker Baloo, putting Anchorage back in the lead.

3rd Period:

6. Halifax Raiders , Perry Morgan 2 (Troy Reynolds 4) at 4:28
raiders 3 - 3 Armada

Halifax spent the majority of the game running behind, however the third period saw a different animal of scoring, as Halifax struck early with another non-scorer getting his due from Troy Reynolds.

7. Halifax Raiders , Matt Kholin 4 (Dylan Karlsson 3, Troy Reynolds 5) at 5:30
raiders 4 - 3 Armada

Only a minute later Halifax would strike once again, putting Anchorage in a tough spot early in the third period. Matt Kholin scored his 4th of the season from Dylan Karlsson and Troy Reynolds, and from there the Raiders took the lead and didn't look back from here.

8. Halifax Raiders , Perry Morgan 3 (Matt Kholin 4) at 8:58 (PP)
raiders 5 - 3 Armada

Anchorage tried to play a disciplined game, but it wasn't meant to be as they took a bad penalty to which Halifax responded. Perry Morgan scored his second of the night from Matt Kholin, ending the Armada's hopes that there would be any kind of comeback. Halifax would hold on and take this one with a final score of 5-3.

Snake-bitten Player of the Night

Oliver Kovacs gets the snake-bitten player of the night award for this game with his game leading total of 5 shots. He also amassed a total of 5 shots that were either deflected or blocked. Kovacs must have been visibly frustrated after this performance as he clearly felt like he could beat McKorsky in this game. Amassing 25% of Anchorage's total shot number Kovacs surely could have done more to help his team in this game. It wasn't a totally worthless game from Kovacs though, as he amassed a couple of hits and played some PK time. Anchorage will need this man to keep his shot totals up, but hopefully he can sort his finishing out.

Brick Wall Award

It would be embarrassing to award either goalie the brick wall award tonight as they both performed well below their expectations. Therefore we will award Kalevi Karhunen with the award for this game. Nearly leading the Armada in penalty kill time on ice, he managed to block five of Halifax's shots to help out his struggling goaltender. It's not a complete stretch to say maybe Anchorage should've started Karhunen in net tonight instead of Peter Larson. Not only was he a brick wall for the Armada he also pitched in offensively with a goal. If either of the goaltenders in this game had played to their abilities it wouldn't have been a contest.

Unexpected Impact Player

Perry Morgan lead Halifax's offense on a night where they didn't really need him or expect him to. Morgan is known as a bit more of a defensive defenseman who pitches in offensively with crisp breakout passes. He is not known for his scoring. So when he potted two goals for the Raiders, including the game tying goal, coach Ed Balls was ecstatic with the effort. "If Perry can do this every game I think we could go undefeated for the rest of the season" - Ed Balls. We don't expect Morgan to keep this going, hence the unexpected impact player award, but if he does the Raiders could be even more of a force going forward.

Game Recap

Two teams with extremely high hopes for this season, the energy was flowing early for both teams in this early season match-up between the Anchorage Armada and the Halifax Raiders. The Raiders scored just a minute into the game as SMJHL veteran Tobias Viklund took a nice feed from rookie Joseph Laraque for the easy goal. Laraque's assist was his 6th in just his 9th game. The Raiders would find themselves in penalty trouble and the Armada scored two powerplay goals within a four minute span. Kalevi Karhunen and Dean Colt III took advantage of the Raiders penalties and gave Anchorage a 2-1 lead. Dylan Karlsson would score a powerplay goal of his own to even the score heading into the locker-room after the 1st. Spencer MacLean scored early in the second period and the Armada held the lead until the horn sounded as neither team generated much offense. The Raiders star players shined bright in the 3rd period. Perry Morgan scored a pair of goals, Matt Kholin scored a goal and added an assist, and Troy Reynolds assisted on two of the Raiders 3 goals as Halifax proved to much for the Armada to handle. Reynolds added an exclamation point to the comeback victory when he got the best of Anchorage center Kenji Yoshimura in a late game scrap.

3 Stars of the Night

3. Matt Kholin

Matt Kholin stepped up his game when it mattered the most and was a big part of the Raiders comeback victory. Kholin scored the game winning goal just after Perry Morgan had tied the game and set up Morgan for the put away goal registering the primary assist on the play. Kholin was solid defensively as he usually is, winning 11 out of 19 face-offs, helping kill off a late penalty and finishing the game with a +2 plus/minus rating.

2. Dylan Karlsson

Dylan Karlsson has quietly been one of the most productive defenseman offensively from his draft class and he showed up again tonight. Karlsson scored his 4th goal of the new season and made a very smart pass to Matt Kholin for the primary assist on the game winning goal. Karlsson may soon be in the conversation for the leagues very best defenseman.

1. Perry Morgan

The first round pick of the New England Wolfpack lived up to the lofty expectations during this game scoring a pair of goals. leading the charge during the Raiders third period offensive outburst. Morgan scored on both of his shots and played important minutes in all situations. Morgan blocked a couple of point blank shots that could have very easily affected the outcome of the game.

---------------------

When Will Slothface Breakout?

One name that was surprisingly absent from the scoresheet was that of ultra talented and New Orleans Specters first ever draft pick Jimmy Slothface. Slothface has just one goal to this point in the season after many people expected him to be among the leagues very best snipers. Slothface committed a double minor roughing penalty that led to a goal by Dean Colt during the second half of the penalty. Was Sloth's frustration with his low goal total getting the best of him? There's still plenty of time left in the season for Slothface to turn things around and the Halifax Raiders could reach a new level of play when he does. The other stars were getting it done tonight and improved play from Slothface could take the team to the next level.

Comment 1: Possible playoff matchup?

This high scoring affair saw two SMJHL powerhouses matchup in an offensive shootout. Although Anchorage is off to a slow start early this season most hockey pundits are saying its only a matter of time before they settle in and start picking up some wins. Both teams have a good mix of stud veterans, promising looking young players and strong goaltending and almost seem destined to meet up in the playoffs. If this pulse pounding, fast paced game is any indicator of what’s to come, I think its fair to say hockey fans everywhere will be hoping for a postseason matchup, as well as circling the remainder of the two teams regular season games.

Comment 2: Rookie Spotlight

In a young league full of stud SHL send downs, it’s sometimes hard to notice rookies in the SMJHL. Most players come into the league at 16 and have some developing to do before they begin making a big impact at the junior level. This game between the Raiders and Armada was an exception to the rule however as three players were quite noticeable on the ice. Spencer MacLean, the Armada winger, played a big game in a losing effort. He scored his second goal of the season with the assist going to Xena on a beautiful 2 on 1 with a sweet quick release. Tony Ford, dman for the Armada ended up a minus on the game but played well through some tough match-ups against some very skilled players, holding his own throughout. On the winning side was Esa Parmborg. Promising young player with great pedigree, he didn’t play big minutes tonight but he flew around the ice when he did play and looked dangerous throughout.

Comment 3: PSN interview

Dick McGruff here with Anchorage captain Leo Lockhart. Leo you lost tonight but can you speak about some of the good things your team did tonight?
Leo: We were definitely flat in some areas but I thought our power play (40%) looked pretty dangerous all night and we definitely could’ve scored a couple more, McKorsy made some good saves.
Dick: Your team has been a bit flat out of the gate this year, have you pinpointed a reason for that in the room?
Leo: We’ve had some bad bounces and been unlucky but on the other hand we’ve been in a lot of games so we’re trying not to get discouraged and just keep pushing.
Dick: Can you talk a little bit about what being named the captain for the second straight year means to you?
Leo: It’s awesome I’m proud to be the Captain in this locker room and I know my parents are proud and I hope I can live up to the C.
