(This post was last modified: 03-16-2019, 02:09 PM by Fordyford.)

Montreal Militia  Militia @ Armada Anchorage Armada

Final Score:
Armada 3-2 Militia

Period 1:
NOTHING

Period 2:

1:50 Armada Olivier Cloutier (Kenji Yoshimura, Leopold Lockhart) ANC 1-0 MTL

Early in the second period the first goal is scored, and it's Olivier Cloutier for Anchorage, picking up his 11th of the season. A breakout pass from Lockhart (for his 17th assist) is received by Kenji Yoshimura who, in the now created 2 on 1 whips it across to Cloutier who finishes it into the top right. A great play by Anchorage to get ahead.

3:47  Armada Oliver Kovacs (Olivier Cloutier, Kenji Yoshimura) (PP) ANC 2-0 MTL

Shortly after a holding penalty is called against James Truong and Anchorage get their second PP of the night. Montreal win the face-off, but it's recovered by Kenji Yoshimura who passes it to Cloutier at the edge of the zone. He tries a shot and Kovacs gets his stick on it in front of net. A well executed piece on the best power play in the league to score with the man advantage.

Period 3:

4:40  Armada Maxime Bouchard (Phil Mcrakin, Kenji Yoshimura) ANC 3-0 MTL

Another planned play comes off to put Anchorage 3 up at the start of the third. A drop pass from Kenji Yoshimura is picked up by Phil Mcrakin coming into the zone. He passed it across to Bouchard who was in space to finish it between the goalie's legs. Another impressive piece of play and Yoshimura picks up his 3rd assist.

14:51 Militia Andreas Kvalheim (Marc Hagan, Nikolai Evans) (PP) ANC 3-1 MTL

Kvalheim finally manages to get Montreal onto the board with 5 minutes left in the game. A penalty by the rookie Van Otter gave Montreal a man advantage, and though they were running out of time eventually Evans swept it round the net to Hagan, who Shot it in, and Kvalheim converted the rebound. A bit of a mistake by the goaltender, who couldn't hold on to the puck.

16:27  Militia Nikolai Evans (Mason Hudson, Marc Hagan) (PP) ANC 3-2 MTL

Another penalty drawn by Montreal, this one perpetrated by Maxime Bouchard, the game winning goal scorer, as once again Montreal looked to be running out of time on the penalty, but this time Hagan passed it across the zone to Hudson, who with an excellent pass put it in to Evans in front of net, who duly converted. A smoothly executed finish to put Montreal within 1.

Three Stars:
1: Kenji Yoshimura  Armada (0G, 3A)
2: Olivier Cloutier  Armada (1G, 1A)
3: Nikolai Evans  Militia (1G, 1A)

Power Play:
Armada 1 on 5 - 20%
Militia 2 on 4 - 50%

Goaltenders:
Armada  Simeon Vanloon: 30 Saves, 32 shots - 0.938
Militia Aleksi O'Koivu-Voltova: 18 saves, 21 shots - 0.857

Audi Star of the Game: Kenji Yoshimura Armada
Tonight's Audi Star of the Game is Anchorage's Kenji Yoshimura. The Armada's star forward had assists on all 3 of their goals tonight as he helped set up his teammates for Victory. Yoshimura's game wasn't perfect as he had a rough outing in the faceoff circle but he made up for it by finding his teammates with picture perfect passes to help his team steal this game. Yoshimura blocked a shot and generated 3 shots of his own while also getting an assist in his 3 and a half power play minutes. He had exactly the kind of game a team needs from their star player to steal a win when they aren't at their best.

Tide Flop of the Game: Griffith Cadwalader Militia
Tonight's Tide Flop of the Game is Montreal's Griffith Cadwalader. It was a rough night at the office for Griffith who was basically invisible for the Militia tonight with no hits, shots or blocks in almost 16 minutes of ice time. Cadwalader was also a -2 on the night so he was on the ice for both of Anchorage's even strength goals and none of Montreal's. Cadwalader is usually a player that Montreal relies on to kill their penalties and tonight was no different as he got almost 4 minutes of ice time on the penalty kill but was still beaten once by Anchorage's power play which ultimately made the difference in this one.

Tesla Key to the Game: Goaltending
Tonight's Tesla Key to the Game is goaltending. When it all came down to it, goaltending made the difference for both teams in this one as Montreal won 48 faceoffs compared to Anchorage's 32, giving them most of the possession in this one. They also had 11 more shots than the Armada and forced them into blocking 9 more shots but they were ultimately unable to win the game as Anchorage's Simeon Vanloon shut the door stopping 30 of 32 shots and helping backstop his team to victory in a game in which they were second best. Anchorage's goaltending is really what gave them a shot in this game and they'll surely be grateful that Vanloon came up big for them in a game where they really should've been better to make things easier on themselves.

Comment #1 -  What happened in the first period. This may have been the most uneventful period in the history of the SMJHL. No goals, only 12 shots on net, obviously they weren't very good shots, since no goals. We did have two whole penalties which equated for most of the action in the first period. Keegan Angello (MTL) for Hooking (Minor) at 5:51, Phil Mcrakin (ANC) for High sticking (Minor) at 16:24. This was the most exciting minutes of the period, which is disappointing from one of the most exciting teams in the SMJHL (Anchorage). Hopefully this is the worst period they play all season.

Comment #2 - Anchorage almost blows a 3-0 lead. Starting in the second period Anchorage climbed to a 3-0 lead. This was due in large part to goals by a bunch of Olivers. Anchorage has 2 Olivers who can score goals, this must be unique in a minor league system, as I can't imagine that Oliver is a very common name. Oliver Cloutier and Oliver Kovacs, scored the two goals in the second to put Anchorage up 2-0. Maxime Bouchard then put up another goal in the third to go up 3-0. However, this was not enough for Anchorage to feel secure as they quickly gave back this commanding lead.

Comment #3 - Power Play inefficiency by Anchorage. Anchorage had 1 more powerplay than the Militia did for the game, but could not convert on it. The Armada went 1/5 on the powerplay, while the Militia went 2/4 on the powerplay. Yet the Armada still won, this made me wonder if this was a lack of scoring depth and power play depth from the Armada or if the Militia happened to play well for this. The result was that the Armada up to this game where super ineffiecient when it comes to the man advantage. This being said with their potent offensive I wouldn't think that this will last long.

Comment #1:

Something To Write Home About: Here's a feel good story for the night and definitely going to be a night to remember for Vanloon. Making only his second start of the season for the Armada, Vanloon was an absolute stud in net stopping 30 of the 32 shots that came his way and was a huge reason that they were able to come out on top. It'll be interesting to see given his 2-0 record as to whether Anchorage gives him a few more looks down the stretch.

Something To Forget: On the flip side of the coin, O'Koivu-Volkova had an absolute night to forget for the Militia as they surrendered 3 goals on 21 shots for an ugly .857 save percentage. It's hard enough to win scoring only 2 goals but the Militia will need a better effort from their goaltender on the rest of the nights this year if they want to put up a respectable showing.

Comment #2:

Here at the 2nd intermission we're gonna play what I like to call the name game; we're going to discuss some of the better and more interesting names on these two teams.

Bang Bros: These guys have a couple of names coming straight from the porn industry with Phil Mcrakin and Johnny Sins suiting up for Anchorage. They only put up one point between the two of them, so they're going to need to put some more work into their banging game if they want to prove that they are worth their names.

The Artist Formerly Known As: Prince. Madonna. Dido. Sting. All great artists who chose to forgo having two names and instead be known as one singular one. Clearly Armada player Xena took a page out of their book and decided to go the same route. Not for a lack of trying, Xena was held off the board with 5 shots but no points in 22 minutes.

Comment One - First Round Focus:
In this segment, we will break down the impact that each team's first-round selection from the S46 draft had on today's game.
Militia Marc Hagan(C/LW)
Marc had a very bipolar game, to say the least, assisting twice on the powerplay goals that kept the Militia in the game but also being on the ice for both of Anchorage's even-strength goals ultimately costing his team the game. He also had a penalty, 1 shot, and 2 hits, outlining his overall solid play in 17:11 TOI centering the third line.
Armada Tony Ford (D)
Tony played a strong defensive game tonight which he was rewarded for by gaining a +1 for being on the ice for an even-strength goal for. 3 hits highlighted his strong defensive physical presence on the first defensive pairing which is very impressive for a rookie who is in their first generation. Tony was a big reason the Armada pulled out the win in tonight's game with his physical style of defense.
Comment Two - Who was Hot?
Forward of the Game -  Armada Kenji Yoshimura
Kenji was an offensive powerhouse for Anchorage in tonight's game which resulted in him achieving the first-star status between both teams. Centering the second of three Armada forward lines, Yoshimura had 3 assists, two during even strength (+2), while also shooting 3 times and blocking a shot, however, he struggled in the faceoff dot only winning 5. Overall, for playing 20 minutes in tonight's game and having 3 points, if Yoshimura continues this rampage on the league he could receive some shouts for regular season MVP.
Defenseman of the Game -  Militia Nikolai Evans
Bernik was named the first star of the game after his excellent offensive showing in tonight's game. His stat line included 3 assists, a +2 rating, and a shot all while playing the most defensive minutes on his team. Vrzala is a key #1 defenseman that plenty of team's around the league would covet, and he will play a huge role in the Whaler's run for the championship.
Nikolai was named the third star despite his team being on the losing end of the matchup. Proving to be the only bright spot in his team's overall performance by recording a powerplay goal and a powerplay assist which allowed his team to stay in the game until the final buzzer. He also had 3 additional shots and a shot block to round out his strong stat line. Since this game, Evans has been traded to Halifax for a hefty price which emphasizes his value around the league.
Goaltender of the Game - Armada Simeon Vanloon
In spite of being left out to dry defensively by his team, facing 32 total shots from his opponents the Militia, Simeon held his ground and recorded 30 saves and only allowed 2 goals, securing the victory for his team. Relative to league averages for goalies, Vanloon is an above-average starter breaching on elite status, even while playing as the Armada's backup goalie.
Comment Three - Who was Not?
Liable Forward of the Game -  Militia  Montreal's 3rd Line
The trio of Marc Hagan, Griffith Cadwalader, and Herry Morris IV had a rough outing during even strength play on the night. They played relatively sheltered minutes and managed to allow the only 2 five-on-five goals of the game, which ended up being the losing condition for the Militia on the night.
Liable Defenseman of the Game -  Militia Montreal's 3rd Pairing
Similar to their teammates on the 3rd forward line, Dirk Von Grimmelshausen and Oliver Krozoff struggled to hold off the Armada attack when they were not on the man advantage. These two had even more sheltered minutes and certainly won't be seeing more minutes in the near future after the performance seen tonight. The only bright side of the forwards was their offensive production which cannot be said for these two defensemen.
Liable Goaltender of the Game -  Militia Aleksi O'Koivu-Volkova
Aleksi received a strong defensive outing from his team compared to the one seen by Anchorage, yet he allowed one more goal than his counterpart in Simeon Vanloon. 18 saves on 21 shots is unacceptable and I would expect the Montreal coach to start the backup in the next game to rally the troops.

Rookie Spotlight: here's some mostly mundane accomplishments

Tony Ford (ANC) - Ford blocked three shots in this one, one in each period, to lead the Armada. Ford finished at +1
Eko van Otter (ANC) - EVO registered three hits to lead the team, a notable accomplishment for the winger not known for his physicality
Spencer MacLean (ANC) - Though none of them made it past the MTL goalie, MacLean fired three shots on goal, tied for second on the team

Marc Hagan (MTL) - Hagan was an actual contributor in this one, registering two power play assists. Hagan's five-on-five play was less impressive, as he finished -2
Herry Morris IV (MTL) - A game of 2s for HM4: 2 shots on goal, 2 hits, 2 PIMs, and a -2
Dirk von Grimmelshausen (MTL) - no counting stats, just a -2 oops not great

Player of the Game

There were plenty of good players in this game on both sides, but we shouldn't forget about Armada goalie Simeon Vanloon who made 30 saves on 32 shots (0.938 SV%) and helped his team win the game with a final score of 3-2. Anchorage was heavily out-shot in the second half of the game and Montreal really tried to turn things around in the third period by scoring two quick power play goals. Vanloon hasn't seen much ice time up to this point, being the backup to starter Peter Larson this season, but surely has earned himself a few more starts after a performance like this one. The only criticism and probably a reason why he wasn't chosen as one of the three stars was him taking an undisciplined slashing penalty at the beginning of the third period.

Nice win by the Armada in this one. Let's take a closer look at the game of Maxime Bouchard played in this match up. The top Dragons prospect is putting together a nice season this year. Bouchard lined up on the wing alongside Kenji Yoshimura and Olivier Cloutier, on Anrhcorage's 2nd line. This is a line that has the full green light for offence playing at an 0-0-5 strategy. Bouchard played a total of 17:54 with 2:46 of that on the powerplay. Somewhat low minutes for one of the best players in junior but his elite skill stood out once again in this game. Maxime Bouchard scored the game winning goal in this one, a snap shot from the high slot, assisted by Phil McKrakin and Yoshimura. It was Bouchard's 7th goal of the season and obviously a key goal in the game, ending up as the game winner. Bouchard had a strong outing tonight, finishing with a +2 rating, 1 goal on 2 shots and even went 2/3 in the face off circle when called upon. Clearly a premier player in the making.
