Vancouver Whalers vs Anaheim Outlaws

Final Score

Whalers  2- 3  Outlaws

Period 1:

1.   Vancouver Whalers  Whalers  , Petr Mikulak 12 (Cullen Gray 10, Joe Ackroyd 4) at 3:29

Early in the first period the Whalers get the puck deep in the Outlaw zone. Mil Momka shoots, but it’s deflected off Yoshimistu McCloud, the shot bounces wide of the net. The puck is picked up by Cullen Gray, who immediately shoots the puck wide. Joe Ackroyd grabs the puck off the boards and swings it wide to Cullen, who find Petr Mikulak in front… he shoots… he SCORES! 1-0 Whalers.

Period 2:

2. Anaheim Outlaws  Outlaws  , Collin Gibbles 11 (Kristers Dzelme 10, Milo Momoka 7) at 5:32
The Anaheim Outlaws look to respond to a week first period. About 5 minutes into the period they capitalize on a Whaler mistake. Igor Volkov ices the puck which puts it in the Whalers zone. Though Slap McShotty loses the face off in the Whaler defensive zone, Milo Momoka steals it on the clear. He passes the puck down low to the Outlaw center Dzelme. Dzelme finds space and moves the puck to Gibbles. Gibbles dekes one defender and puts it in the back of the net. The game is now tied 1-1.

Period 3:

3. Vancouver Whalers Whalers , Aaron Wilson 4 (Jax Duggan 10, Joe Ackroyd 5) at 4:35

Borromini Cannellini wins the face off in the offensive zone. He gets the put to Joe Ackroyd, who moves the puck over to Jax Duggan. Jax makes a stellar move and put the puck on Aaron Wilson stick who is wide open. Wilson can’t miss from here and buries it to give the Whalers a 2-1 lead.

4. Anaheim Outlaws Outlaws  , Kristers Dzelme 2 (Mathias Seger 20, Hiro Fujikawa 14) at 11:53 (PP)

Jax Duggan takes a stupid penalty to give the Outlaws a man-advantage. With that Kristers moves the puck out of the Anaheim zone. The play is lead forward by Seger, who takes a shot but misses wide. The puck is wrangled by Fujikawa, who finds Seger on the point. Seger moves the puck back to Fujikawa on the half way, who quickly moves it back to Seger. Seger slap passes it to a wide open Kristers…. HE SCORES!! We are tied on the power play goal by the Outlaws.

This game is going to overtime!

Comment 1:

The Fight

At 5:56 in the second period Max Rockatansky (ANA) and Borromini Cannellini (VAN), who had just faced-off each other in the neutral zone, had a fight. Just prior to their face-off Collin Gibbles (ANA) had tied the game 1-1. Neither of the two players is known for fighting - in fact it was the first fight for both players this season. Rockatansky didn't even take very many penalties before, however Cannellini had collected his first major for boarding a few games prior to this one. It was an odd fight for an odd reason, because both players, especially Cannellini, are rather known for their offensive skill. Obviously, given his size and weight, Cannellini had a slight advantage, but Rockatansky didn't give him any chances either. The fight itself was very uneventful and ended in a draw. Whatever caused it isn't known, it might be something between the two of them or something that was said after the goal. Either way it should be interesting the next time Anaheim and Vancouver face each other.

Comment One:
Strong Goalie Performance

Both goaltenders were sharp tonight as the Vancouver Whalers and the Anaheim Outlaws had to go to the shootout to determine a winner. Casimir Stevens of the Vancouver Whalers stoppend 28 of 30 shots for a solid 93.3 SV% but suffered his first Overtime/Shootout loss in the process. It's clear though that this wasn't Stevens doing who kept his team in the game tonight. Tibuk Soonika of the Anaheim Outlaws only faced 20 shots and was able to stop 18 of them for a solid 90.0 SV%. He stopped all shootout attempts to get his ninth victory of the season and a deserving win for his team.

Comment Two:
Bad Powerplay

The Vancouver Whalers were awful when they stepped on the ice for the powerplay tonight. The had the following lines:

Andy Kerr - Carlo Russo - Borromini Cannellini

Bernik Vrzala - Cullen Gray

and

Aaron Wilson - Aleister Crowley - Petr Mikulak

Theo Morgan - Jax Duggan

Those ten guys weren't able to get one in their five attempts and the Whalers just had problems to beat the stekkar goalie of the Anheim Outlaws, Tibuk Soonika. The Outlaws however were able to pot one one Powerplay as Kristers Dzelme put it into the net off the feed of Mathias Seger and Hiro Fujikawa. This was the goal to tie the game up and sent it to overtime.

Comment Three:
Big scrap in the second period

It's not often that you see the league leader in scoring, Borromini Cannellini, drop his gloves but tonight he couldn't resist after Max Rockatansky put his glove into Cannellini's face several times after a stoppagee 5:56 into the 2nd period. The first line Center of the Whalers grabbed Rockatansky and dropped his glove, his oppenent did so as well just secons later and off they went. Rockatansky was able to land a big right but Cannellini could resist and hold on to Rockatansky. At the end, the referees had to step in and seperate the two and the scrap ended in a draw. Still, this was something that let the fans rise to their feet.

Comment 1:

Borromini Cannellini, who is, by this point a house hold name in Vancouver, and a reoccurring character in the nightmares of most defenses and goalies around the SMJHL. An offensive power house that was more or less useless in this game for Vancouver. Cannellini's only real contribution to his squad during this game was his 11 faceoff wins, which, sitting at a 45% rate on this game is well below his standards most nights. While it may seem unfair, if Vancouver is going to continue winning, they are going to need to see far more out of their Captain.

Comment 2:

Its no secret that the Vancouver Whalers have been just awful in the special teams department. Most games for this whalers squad are either won or lost on either a failure to produce in the man advantage situation, or a failure to keep their heads out of their asses long enough to avoid giving the other squad a chance to dominate for 2 minutes. That was one of the main issues for Vancouver in this game. Giving the Outlaws 5 full chances to capitalize and receiving none in return. Had it not been for the Outlaws one power play goal, Vancouver easily could have won this game by 1 goal.

Comment 3:

Vancouver struggled with an overall inability to win in every aspect of this game. Hits? The Anaheim Outlaws had almost double Vancouvers hits this game at 19 to 11. Faceoffs? This one was closer but Anaheim still won 4 more faceoffs this game, which can be crucial depending on the zone the faceoff takes place in. Blocked shots? Ok Vancouver may have done better here with 3 more shots blocked than the Outlaws, however 5 of 7 blocked shots were by offensive players, where was the defense on this. Vancouver player Borromini Cannellini couldn't even get a win in his fight this game, with both himself and the Outlaws player fighting to a draw, which could have summed up this game completely if Cannellini was injured in the fight.

Top 3 Gritters of the Game
1. Borromini Cannellini (VAN) - Fights! Yes! His 5 PIMs were from a fight, which was a draw, and it was a good fight. He also had 2 hits, and went 11/24 on faceoffs. Good performance.
2. Max Rockatansky (ANA) - The other fight combatant, he collected a hit to go along with it. He also went 6/10 on faceoffs, which is a solid performance on draws.
3. Andy Kerr (VAN) - 3 hits, excellent. 12/21 in the faceoff circle, even better. 2 PIMs for absolutely plowing over the Anaheim goalie? The best part of his performance. Great work from him.

Comment 1: Anaheim peppers Vancouver with shots, barely gets the win.
Anaheim came out guns blazing posting up 12 shots to 4 in the first period but that didn't mean much since Vancouver took the early lead with a goal by Mikulak 3:29 into the first. Whalers goalie Casimir Stevens was seen doing the splits and full body extensions to stop the early onslaught of shots while Anaheim's Soonika was caught snoozing and let in a softy to put their team down 1-0 going into the break. The second period was a bit of a snooze fest all around but more balanced in offense with both teams putting seven shots on goal on their opponents goaltenders, with only ANA Collin Gibbles finding the back of the net to tie the game at one a piece heading into the second intermission. The third period was heavily sided once again for the Outlaws in regards to shots, 10 to 5 in Anaheim's favor, but that did not seem to translate well on paper as both teams found a goal in the period, albeit Outlaws scored on the man advantage. With the amount of shots on goal for ANA and lack of shots on their goalie, its hard to blame the Outlaws forwards for this close game. Perhaps the ANA goalie coach can work more with Soonika this week to help him improve on this nights performance. That being said, he did make up for it in shootouts and gathered the win, which ultimately is what matters most in the end.

Comment 2: Vancouver's poor discipline eventually costs them the game.
Vancouver was the only team to play at a disadvantage this match by taking five penalties including a coincidental fighting major in the second. Vancouver found themselves on the PK three times in the first and managed to kill all of them off successfully. This ramped up the momentum in their favor especially when they walked into the locker room ahead 1-0 after the early pressure from Anaheim. The second period bode no better for the Whalers when they picked up a goalie interference call 2:23 into the period. Although they were able to kill off the penalty, fatigue must have set in on their defenders as they surrendered the equalizing goal a minute after killing off the penalty. Rockatansky (ANA) and SMJHL star Cannellini (VAN) found themselves in a scrap shortly after the goal but those penalties offset, resulting in no man advantage. The final penalty happened in the third period when VAN Duggan was called for a high stick which helped ANA Dzelme level the game 11:53 into the period, which forced the game into a scoreless overtime and eventually a shootout tilt in favor of Anaheim. With the Whalers playing at a disadvantage, it was only a matter of time until the penalties cost them, and in this case it cost them the game. Perhaps the Whalers coaches can address the lack of discipline and avoid dropping points in games where they held the lead twice.

Comment 3: Borromini Cannellini risks injury scrapping with 3rd line center Max Rockatansky
Rumor is that Vancouver's coaches and GM were FURIOUS with Borromini after he decided to duke it out with Anaheim's Rockatansky shortly after the equalizing goal in the second period. As most are aware, Cannellini leads the SMJHL in points and is a front runner for the MVP this season whereas Rockatansky has only 20 points in 48 games played this season. With the offensive prowess that Borromini provides for Vancouver, its logical to assume that the risk of injury over a stupid fight is not worth it in the eyes of VAN management and its rumored that coach pulled Borromini to the side immediately after heading into the locker room after the second period horn blew. While this is Borromini's third fight this season, I'm sure the coaches are getting sick of his goon shit and are probably expecting him to taper his grittiness heading into the playoffs but given the gritty player that Cannellini is, I don't know if we will see that maturity spark in him just yet. Time will tell!

Comment #1: Discipline but no Finish: One of the big stories of today's game has to be the Outlaws play when it came to the topic of penalties.  They were fantastically disciplined, taking 0 penalties and not allowing Vancouver's high powered offense to get any extra-man advantage chances to score on them.  That being said, they were real bad when it came to being able to succeed with the powerplay opportunities that were gifted to them by Vancouver.  They're going to need to be better in the playoffs if they want any hope of making it past the first round.

Comment #2: Goalie's Battle: In a game where the finals core is 3-2 in a shootout, it's hard to find fault with the efforts of either goalie when looking back. Soonika put up a solid .900 SV % by today's SMJHL standards and gave his team a chance to get to the shootout and pickup the W. But, he was outplayed in that respect by Casimir Stevens who put up 28 saves on 30 shots, good for a .933 SV% and he's had a real solid year in net. Everyone talks about Vancouver's offense but Stevens could be a key factor keeping them in the race to be tops of the SMJHL.
