S46 SMJHL PT 4 - MVP
#31

The race for the coveted Raymond Lindsay award is a tight one this season. Many amazing players and tons of great individual seasons this year mean that the choice for the Lindsay, as usual, is not an easy one. In no particular order my favourites list look like this;

Guy Zheng: The Kelowna Knights lead the SmJHL this year and one of the biggest reasons is the play of stud defenseman Guy Zheng. He leads the team in scoring from the blue line and is second on the team in +/- as well as being a leader on and off the ice.

Leopold Lockhart: Lockhart has enjoyed an amazing season as well, in his second year as captain of the Anchorage Armada he is tied for third in team scoring from the blue line and has shouldered the burden of huge defensive minutes. He sets an amazing example for his teammates, be it rookie or vet, and should receive some consideration for the Lindsay.

Nicholas Fleming: The winger for the powerhouse St. Louis Scarecrows has done it all this year while leading his team to a second place league finish behind the Kelowna Knights. He’s lead his team in goals and points and looks to make some noise in the playoffs. He dominates play and strikes fear in the hearts of opposing dmen when they see him coming down the wing.

I did my top 3 based upon where a player landed in the leaderboards at their respective position, their points per game, their team's position in the standings, and how valuable they really really are to their team.

My Top 3

3.  Knights  D Guy Zheng - He's had a fantastic season all around, leading all defensemen in points and +/-. He's logged big minutes for the 1st place Kelowna Knights and could be in for a deep playoff run. As good as a season other defensemen have had in the SMJHL this season, Zheng will definitely get the most MVP votes at that position.

2.  Lions   G Patrice Nadeau - Nadeau was just incredible for the Lethbridge Lions this season. Leading all goalies in save percentage, goals against average, and shutouts while only really being challenged by  Whalers Casimir Stevens in SV% and GAA, he was the best goalie in the league by quite a wide margin and there is little doubt how valuable he is to his team and deserves to receive some first place MVP votes.

1.  Whalers  C Borromini Cannellini - As good as the previous 2 players I listed were dominant at their positions this season, Cannellini was just as if not more dominant. He led the league in goals, points, +/-, and finished 10 points higher than the guy in 2nd place, his linemate Whalers Petr Mikulak. It's believed by most hockey experts that Cannellini is the front runner for the Raymond Lindsay award this season.

Although this is my top 3, I could see any of these 3 taking the award this season. It should be a tight race for sure.

If you say anyone other than Borromini Cannellini for the MVP of the Simulation Major junior Hockey League.... you have got another thing coming. This man literally tore up the SMJHL all season, he made everyone his personal bitch and just feasted on the ice. With 25 goals, leading the league, and adding 29 assists, mans stands above the rest of the league with 10 points more than the second place guy - his teammate nonetheless. Throw on his +28 on the season, which is also ridiculous considering his teammate had a +18, and the next highest scorer was Guy Zheng with a +19 and 42 points. I guess if we really had to make the counterargument, it would be that VAN probably would have been sitting pretty without Cannelini, as Mikulak also had a tremendous season with 44 points on the Whalers. Someone who probably could win as well, but will not is Knute Knurtsson, with his 44 points on the year - however, Colorado was a shit show all year in the sim and just could not get it done, so he was a bright spot on an ailing team. Nicolas Fleming had a good eyar with 42 points, but I still believe Cannelini is the frontrunner for the MVP

No matter how you're looking at it, Borromini Cannellini is going to be the MVP of the leage. No competition. He's number 1 in goals by a 3 goal margin as well as 5th in assists. The dude's a monster. Sure, he couldve had a couple more hits and maybe he shouldve thrown himself in front of another shot or two. But why would he? Why would he risk the injury by getting infront of a 100 mile per hour shot and maybe be out for the rest of the season instead of just scoring twice the amount of goals the opposition does? That's like passing up on McDavid for someone shit tier. Vancouver ended up on 8th plays? Jeeesus, that makes it even more clear.

Just for fun, lets name 2 more

Patrice Nadeau

Patrice Nadeau was the clear leader when it came to goalies. Will no doubt get awarded the best goalie prize and all the praise. Nuf said frankly.

Casimir Stevens

Casimir Stevens ended up 2nd in the leaderboards for goalies, despite playing on the tire fire that was vancouver. However he and Cannellini are playing on the same team so sadly he's missing out on the MVP award.

Borromini Cannellini (VAN F) - Leading the league at 44 points in 42 games, it is hard to pass him up for the MVP consideration while he is maintaining over a point per game pace. With his second year in the league, his maturity has really started to shine in the SMJHL and he is certainly Vancouver's best asset this season. If Borromini can continue this persumably sustainable pace, then it would be to no ones surprise to see him crowned the MVP of this season.

Raino Kyllonen (DET F) - With a young Detroit team that had some early season struggles, Raino kept his stride by pulling his weight (and probably some others) through this season to tally up 14 goals and 21 assists (35 points) in 42 games. On top of that, he even showed a grittyness to his game as he has racked up 30 PIMs with 2 majors, something we don't see very often out of top talent snipers. His well rounded play along with his peripherals puts him on my list for potential MVP of the league.

Guy Zheng (KEL D) - Zheng has had an impressive season from the blueline over in Kelona, racking up 34 points (6g, 28A) in 42 games. More impressively than that is his respectable 11 +/- over the season which shows that while he is on the ice, the puck typically ends up in the net. Furthermore, his 21.84 min per game is towards the top end of all blue liners in the league which leads us to believe that the coaches over in Kelona lean heavily on him and his play. If someone is carrying that much weight, it seems to be a shoe in for MVP candidacy if you ask me.

3 Possible MVP Winners:

Nicolas Fleming Scarecrows Fleming has filled the stat sheet up during this season. He has 22 goals, 20 assists, totaling 42 points in 50 games. This ranks him in the top 5 of scoring on the season. Fleming also took 162 shots which ranked him fifth in shots taken. On top of that, Fleming played over 20 minutes a game. He was an important member of the Scarecrows power play and penalty kill. Fleming has helped lead the Scarecrows to a first round bye and second overall in the SMJHL standings.

Guy Zheng KnightsZheng is by far the best defensemen this season and his stats have showed that. He has 10 goals and 32 assists, totaling 42 points. He is one of the top ice time getters in the whole SMJHL and he a very important member of this Knights team. He is a plus 19 and has 49 blocked shots so we can see that Zheng is very good on offense and defense. Zheng is an important reason why the Knights are first in the standings.

Borromini Cannellini Whalers The SMJHL point leader with 54 points in 50 games. He leads the league in goals with 25 and shots with a total of 187. He is able to bring out the best of his line mates and this is proven because he is playing with a rookie on the first line and has still managed to lead the SMJHL in points.

When you look at the S46 season there is one player that stands out among the rest, one skater that has taken the league by storm and really made a name for him self. Borromini Cannellini has been an absolute monster this season. Cannellini has found away to lead the league in Goals, be in the top for assists and lead the leagues in points by a large margin. Borromini Cannellini has stepped up his game and taken control of the Vancouver Whalers and is looking to find any avenue to carry them to a cup. Borromini Cannellini has had some support from team mates especially from the likes of Petr Mikulak, who has been a great supporting cast.

The Whalers have had a rough go on the season but without the likes of Borromini Cannellini they would easily be looking a lot larger of a dire sitution. The big aspect of the SMJHL playoffs is all 10 teams make it which leave the door wide open for the Whalers and an MVP like Borromini Cannellini to steal the show and find a way to power a team like the Vancouver Whalers to a deep playoff run and maybe, if everything goes well, a deep playoff run.

It is always a Wild race in the SMJHL playoffs, but Borromini Cannellini looks to carry the Vancouver Whalers deep.

Whalers Borromini Cannellini (F) - He has the most points in the league and the most goals in the league. His power-play points look average for the top scorers, so he's getting a lot of these points at even-strength. He's also taken the most hits in the league, so to be able to take a beating and score more than anyone is quite a testament to his skills and the sign of an accomplished player.

Knights Guy Zheng (D) - This defenseman is the top scorer of all defensemen and tied for 4th overall in the league, with a majority coming from assists. His +/- of 19 is higher than the top 52 scorers other than Cannellini (28). He has played the 11th highest amount of minutes and blocked 49 shots. This guy is the complete package for an offensive defenseman.

Lions Patrice Nadeau (G) - Nadeau has put up a valiant effort to get the Lions on the map. His save percentage is 0.911, the highest in the league, with 37 games played. He also has the second highest win rate of the top 10 goalies of 57%, behind Sorokin's 28 wins in 45 games (62%). With the lowest GAA in the league, Nadeau did his best to give his team all the chances they needed.
