PGS S46 Game 109: Lethbridge vs. Colorado
#1

Week 6: game 109
Lethbridge Lions vs Colorado Raptors

Lions   2- 3   Raptors

The Lethbridge Lions entered the match as heavy favorites over the struggling Colorado Raptors. Up 10 points in the standings, and a goal differential better than 28 points, it would have been no surprise if the flailing Raptors rolled over. Instead, two young goalies gloved out an overtime game of carpet shinny, Raptors taking the edge, 3-2.

Period 1
The game started slow and finished slower. It took either team 4 and a half minutes to register a shot on goal, credit Raptors’ fourth liner, and impending healthy scratch, Loki Odinnson, who’s muffin was retrieved safely by Lion’s standout rookie Harry Carpet, but he would certainly be tested later. In net for the Raptors was backup Aleksandr Aleksandrov. Neither goalie had a strong showing, but it was exciting to see these promising youngsters tested against players who would get called up the SHL within the same week. Despite the poor percentages, neither quite received the help that they deserved.

Scoring:
1. Lethbridge Lions , Donny McMasters 3 (Eva Lykke Aparjode 8, Roger Baston 7) at 5:58 (PP)
2. Colorado Raptors , Eric Vanderberg 2 (Cassius Darrow 13, Knute Knurtsson 12) at 7:05 (PP)

Period 2
Along the theme for tonight, the second period action wasted no time in scuffing up the zamboni’s work.  Few heavy shot possessions took place within the five minute mark unti  Nick Barin raised the stakes with a deafening clean hit on Lions young super defenseman, Thomas Bathory. The open ice hit would send Bathory to concussion protoco (no worries, he would return within 10 minutes, but the Kronwallian up-ice slide is one of those aggressive and gritty maneuvers that helps keep Colorado above the league in Grit/60. Immediately after the notable hit, rookie center Jake Peralta came out to win a faceoff and lasso possession for the Raptors who would scrore just 50 seconds later.

Scoring:
3. Colorado Raptors , Jakub Novak 9 (Knute Knurtsson 13, Akashi SixNine 6) at 2:57

Period 3
The Lions came out roaring for the third, possessing and taking advantage in the opening five minutes. An impressive performance by Jules L’Eclar eventually potted the Lions the game tying goal. L’Eclair took 4 shots in his shifts, and his tenacity was awarded with wonderful far side wrist shot that just made it past Aleksandrov.
16 and a half minutes into the third stanza, Joln Dubolk, Lion’s defensive workhorse, took a questionable cross checking penalty. A lot of upward facing palms implied that neither team was quite sure as to who should be sent off. Despite the reasoning of the Lion’s bench, Dubolk was sent off for two minutes, killing any momentum that Lethbridge had acquired. The following powerplay was handled expertly by Carpet, as his penalty kill unit failed to clear the zone the entire penalty, and even once things were evened up, he still needed to stand on his head a few more times, as the Raptors shot differential rose by 6 to round out regulation.

Scoring:
4. Lethbridge Lions , Jules L'Eclair 5 (Boruvka Banananak 5, Dinars Briedis 5) at 5:02

Overtime
The Lions had already lost mentally, ith 6 minutes remaining in the game. Overworked and under performing, the Lions took careless penalties, heavy turnovers, and tested their endurance repeatedly by icing the puck. The quick intermission wasn’t enough to reset the mentally compromised team. Knute Knurtsson won the opening faceoff back to Parker Smeb who was able to rip blocker side high off a good screen from Kurtsson in just 11 seconds of overtime.

Scoring:
5. Colorado Raptors , Parker Smeb 5 (Knute Knurtsson 14, Anastasia O'Koivu 2) at 0:10

3 Stars:
*      Knute Knurtsson (Colorado) - an assist on every goal for his team. Won of the lone bright spots offensive and defensively.
**    Parker Smeb (Colorado) - OTGWG, dope.
***  Jay Boom’boom (Lethbridge) - registering 12 hits in just 15 minutes of ice time gets you a star in any league (except europe. Yuck. so soft).

Hidden star of the game:
Jake Peralta - for dominating in an increased role. Higher line, more ice time, and going 60% in the faceoff dot against some tough competition.

Mack Truck Big Hitter of the Game

Today's Mack Truck Big Hitter of the game is Jay Boom'Boom of Lethbridge. Boom'Boom leveled an insane 12 hits in just under 16 minutes of ice time, a missile headed for any Raptor on skates. Boom'Boom accounted for 12 of Lethbridge's 25 hits in the game. Here were his favorite targets:

Cassius Darrow - 4
Jakub Novak - 2
Michael Scarn - 2
Ja'Aj Coitus-Wagg - 1
Nick Brain - 1
Juulius Smonk - 1
Julio Tokolosh - 1 (technically a cow-tipping but registered as a hit)

Boom'Boom's physical play has been an... interesting approach this year. JBB is fourth in the league in hits on the season but first in the league in penalty minutes by a wide margin - his 101 stands head and shoulders above second-place Akashi SixNine's 65 on the year.

Top 3 Gritters of the Game
1. Jay Boom'Boom (LBL) - I literally, vocally, exclaimed "Oh my Lord" at this stat line. The man had 12 hits. That's a record for this stat column. There's dominating a team, and then there is literally bending them over and fucking them. That is what Boom Boom did to Colorado. Unbelievable.
2. Anastasia O'Koivu (COL) - On the other side, collecting half as many hits, but still a very solid performance, was this blueliner. She collected 6 hits, and 2 PIMs for elbowing. Great work.
3. Mister McCarty (LBL) - The last spot was tough, considering 2 players laid 75% of the hits in the game, but McCarty takes it. 2 Hits, 9/18 at the dot, and 2 PIMs (even though they were for hooking)

Three Stars of the Game: Their Stories

1 - Knute Knurtsson Raptors
Knute Knurtsson was busy in this one, registering three assists on the night, finishing +2, and even winning 19 of the 28 faceoffs he had in the game. He has had quite the season so far, and this game was no different in all honestly. How many more games like this does he have left?

2 - Parker Smeb Raptors
Due to the lack of any kind of high powered scoring or even great goaltending, Parker Smeb was able to soar above most in this one. He scored a single goal, but did a lot of other things like registering 4 shots and 2 hits. I mean, it isn't that much, but it is something.

3 - Jay Boom'Boom Lions
This game didn't have much in the way of stars, as we had a player with no goals and no points getting a star in the game. What did he do in this game, anyway? Well, he had 12 hits, which was something we don't se that often from players in the league, so he certainly deserved to be here from that statistic alone.

Borůvka Banananák: He Kinda Sucks
As we saw through the majority of the season so far this year, Boruvka Banananak is kind of terrible at the sport of hockey. Like, what has he done so far this season that would make you think "oh he is good at hockey?" Well this game he at least had an assist and a point. And he even finished +1 on the season. So I guess he doesn't suck quite as much this time as he has in other games, but he certainly has a lot of growing up to do if he wants to be a star in the SHL. And the good thing is that he did get his assist on the game-tying goal forcing overtime (which they lost unfortunately). So not a bad showing for him. Perhaps this is the time that he actually starts to make something of himself and bring himself up to the standards that he has set for himself.

Anastasia O'Koivu: The Most Disappointing S45 SMJHL Draft Pick?
Anastasia O'Koivu was selected 5th overall in the SMJHL entry draft, and so far has been nothing short of bad. We talk about Banananak being bad, but this is a whole other level of bad. O'Koivu has 3 goals and 14 points so far on the season, and when it comes this this game he was actually able to perform and do something. He had an assist on the overtime goal. So that is good, I guess. But other than that he did absolutely nothing in this game, and even made plays that led to goals against in this game. What on earth has happened to this player? Will he actually become a good player, or is his career basically over before it even started? This is a strange situation and I don't know if we have ever seen anything like this before. Maybe we will see him score better next season and we will talk about his great resurgence.

POTG

This game was a very close game in fact and the player of the game in my mind is very simple and in fact from the colorado raptors. Knute Knurtsson is the best player of the game and that is because of his production. He assisted on all of the 3 goals including the over time winning goal. What is very cool is that 2 of the 3 assists were primary assists so we assume that he created the scoring chances. He played 20 minutes this game which is pretty insane and he is definitely the best player of the game and a 1st star.

Roenick Report

Austin Roenick was dreadful this game. He no goals, no assists, no points, no hits, and no shots. He was basically useless on the ice and someone better would have his spot. If it were not for him, the lion would probably have won that game because it is the sport of hockey that one person gets the blame for the loss. Roenick is only a rookie but he has to get his head out of his butt and start waking up. He was a -2 in the most important stat and that is absolutely dreadful and very disappointing, hurts his draft stocks.

Rant

What the hell happened to the lions. This is probably one of their worst games of the season and it was so bad. They had 6 shots in the first period, 5 shots in the second period, and 7 shots in the 3rd. That first period sounds bad but colorado had 3 shots but they woke up unlike the Lions. Their penalty kill was okay but allowed a goal, their power play was atrocious and one of the reasons they lost. And they took a lot of penalties and lost a lot of faceoffs which is very bad. That is my rant and these tigers better wake up.
