Armada Defeat Raptors in Mid-season Bout

Game 146: Anchorage Armada Armada vs. Colorado Raptors Raptors

GAME LINK

Anchorage (4) - Colorado (3)

Anchorage and Colorado square off for the third time in the season in Game 146. Anchorage took the first two, 3-2 and 2-1. This game followed the trend, with Anchorage claiming another victory by a margin of one, this time 4-3. Both teams entered in the midst of up and down stretches, having gone 2-3 in their previous 5 games. The game itself was an up and down affair, with Colorado surging ahead to a 2-0 lead before Anchorage scored 4 in a row. A late addition for the Raptors was too little too late.

Period 1

The first period was all Colorado. The Raptors got called for two minor penalties but killed them off without much struggle. When Anchorage's Kalevi Karhunen got sent to the box for high-sticking, Colorado made them pay. Knute Knurtsson won the opening faceoff of the power play and fed it to Jakub Novak, who sniped his 12th goal of the season. Akashi SixNine picked up Colorado's third penalty of the period, but the Raptors killed it off again. With just a minute left in the period, Colorado struck again off the stick of Eric Vanderberg, his third of the year, assisted by Cassius Darrow (18) and Loki Odinsson (4). Each team had 5 shots in this period, but Colorado made theirs count, getting two past Anchorage goalie Simeon Vanloon. End of period: Anchorage 0 - Colorado 2.

Period 2

In the second period, Anchorage locked in on both offense and defense. Five minutes in, little-used defenseman Phil McCracken scored his second goal of the year, assisted by Dean Colt III (6) and Eko van Otter (7). Five minutes later, the Armada struck again, this time courtesy of Oliver Kovacs' 9th of the season, assisted by Xena (15). Five minutes passed and Anchorage struck gold yet again when Xena (11) rifled one past Yuri Ushakov off passes from Karhunen (16) and Johnny Sins (13). No penalties in this period, just some evenly spread scoring for the Armada, whose offensive pressure led to 13 shots in the frame. Vanloon locked in in net, stopping all six shots he faced. End of period: Anchorage 3 - Colorado 2.

Period 3

Anchorage kept the offensive pressure up to start the third. After Jason Kruger got sent off for high-sticking, Colorado had about 90 seconds of effective penalty kill until Eko van Otter (not often found on the PP) found the back of the net for his second goal of the year, assisted by Olivier Cloutier (13) and Dean Colt III (7). Vanloon stood strong in net until Parker Smeb got one past him at the 12 minute mark, his 11th of the year, assisted by Jakub Novak (8) and Jason Kruger (5). A minor called against Xena gave the Raptors a beautiful chance to tie the game, but Vanloon stopped all three shots on the PP and Anchorage held on for the victory. Colorado stepped up the offense in the third, with 12 shots, but it wasn't enough. Final Score: Anchorage 4 - Colorado 3.

Three Stars of the game
1 - Xena (ANC) - Xena assisted on the game-tying goal and, minutes later, put the Armada ahead for good
2 - Eko van Otter (ANC) - van Otter seems to thrive against Colorado (and Colorado only), picking up an assist in the second and a power play goal in the third that proved to be the difference in the contest
3 - Dean Colt III (ANC) - Colt III contributed two assists and won 15 of 19 faceoffs

Two Raptors of the game
1 - Parker Smeb came up with a goal in the third that brought Colorado within one; Smeb also registered a game-high 5 hits
2 - Jakub Novak got the scoring started in the first and picked up a late assist on Smeb's goal as well.
