S22: Rampaging Rage
#1

(5,166 honest to the hockey gods words, graders)

Sorry for how long it has been, I just have been rather lazy over all and just having so much on my plate. I have found some time so here we go. S22 is the feature of today's look back into history. Another 52 game season.

The Wild West:
1.  Jets 34-14-4 72pts 161 GF 132 GA +29 Goal Diff
2.  Panthers 33-13-6 72pts 168 GF 150 GA +18 Goal Diff
3.  Riot 28-19-5 61pts 148 GF 134 GA +14 Goal Diff
4.  Blizzard 28-20-4 60pts 142 GF 134 GA +8 Goal Diff
-----------------------------------------------------------------
5.  Dragons 23-24-5 51pts 153 GF 158 GA -5 Goal Diff
6.  Renegades 23-25-4 50pts 144 GF 138 GA +6 Goal Diff

This years west certainly was wild as while 22 points separated 1st and last not a single team posted below a .500 record. The Winnipeg Jets sat atop with 72 points, Vidrik Onoprienko's 49 points powered them forward as the league's best team. +29 goal diff is rather strong and this team seems like it could go far. Not to be outdone the Los Angeles Panthers also finished with 72 points and 1 less win than the Jets being forced to sit second as a result. Brian Morley's staggering 60 point campaign definitely stole the show in Hollywood and their team is finding a way to win game in game out. 11 points back sit the 4th best team in the SHL, its the Seattle Riot. Not far off from the abilities of the Panthers to disperse their goals for and against but just unable to get 30 wins. Thomas King's 45 points lead the way for them but it seems much more like a committee deal. They did finish strong with a 9-0-1 final 10 though. The Edmonton Blizzard managed 60 points, a strong total normally lead by star playmaker Kyle Keenan's 45 points (I swear I am not making up the fact than many top scorers are at 45.) but for sure feeling moderate. This team, like others is solid no doubt. Just outside of the playoffs sit the provincial rival Calgary Dragons who are 9 points out with 51. Their -5 goal diff managed to be the only negative in the West showing it's strength of franchises and, perhaps giving Creedence to the "West is Best" argument. Roberts Birkavs lead them on with 48 points but many men managed to be minus'. Last but certainly not least is the Texas Renegades. To say the bottom dropped out would be a gross misreading of their season. That said 50 points must have felt like a huge let down for the two time defending champions. Mr. Shawn Velevra's 46 points topped their table but with 5 players riding 40+ point seasons its hard to see these guys out next year.

The Eastern Beast:
1. Wolfpack 31-18-3  65pts 163GF 135GA +28 Goal Diff
2. Chiefs 25-20-7 57pts 131GF 130GA +1 Goal Diff
3. Platoon 26-22-4 56pts 131GF 145GA -14 Goal Diff
4. Rage 25-22-5 55pts 143GF 150GA -7 Goal Diff
-------------------------------------------------------------------
5. Steelhawks 21-26-5 47pts 138GF 168GA -30 Goal Diff
6. Stars 15-28-9 39pts 114GF 162GA -48 Goal Diff

The East may have had more sub .500 teams but lets give them their due. New England managed to make 1st in the conference 8 points above everyone else and look like the eastern conference champ favorite. +28 Goal Diff and lead by the playmaking of Carter O'Callahan and his 53 points. 5 players with 40+ points and a strong supporting cast make them a serious case for it. Minny made 2nd with 57 points but only a +1 goal diff gives me the impression that they are more of a tooth and nail team but not a force. Deadline acquisition Niklas Stryker from the Dragons managed 51 points but 14 in 17 games for the Chiefs, Rufus Reinhart and Jackson Hauke's 38 points lead the team as far as mainstays and their scoring may be a problem but the east is WIDE OPEN. West Kendall finished 3rd RIGHT behind Minnesota with 56 points, Ivo Willems and his or her 42 points lead the way but their goaltending suffered a bit -14 is not amazing on goal diff but oh well. Manhattan made 4th with 55 points and only a -7 goal diff. Daniel Merica's 58 ridiculous points lead the way and these guys have some stars. Roy Razin had 54 as well which would lead most teams and these two could take over most series'. Now we get to the bottom two. Lets be honest, with so many teams posting above .500 (all of them so far) Somebody has to have suffered. Surprisingly not so badly but oh well. First the Hamilton Steelhawks made 5th and missed the playoffs, meaning we will have two new finalists guaranteed. 47 points meant they were about 8 points out and a -30 goal diff hurts. Griffin Simons and Joe McKeil's 41 points lead the way but the depth just wasn't there with 2 30+ point guys and 2 20+ point guys meant they just don't have the support there. Must be noted that they had 5 rookies including Starter Jakob Tanner who had a .890 SV% and a 2.88 GAA so not bad all told. This could just be a low before a bounce back. Finally the Toronto North Stars finished with 39 points and a -48 goal diff. Darian Scherbluk's 40 points lead the way but this team seems far from ready.

Playoffs Round 1:
1 Seed  Jets VS 4 Seed  Blizzard

Regular season Champions verses a very tough 4th seed in the Edmonton Blizzard. The West was certainly the tougher looking conference but it is all relative. Game 1 featured a solid back and forth that saw both teams tied at 3 headed into an exciting overtime. However just 7 seconds in Terry Bullis ( Jets ) would sit for a Roughing call that Jackson Rogers-Tanaka ( Blizzard ) would capitalize on to give the Blizz that big W. Game 2 carried on in what felt like one team playing, and the other just not quite all there. Dominated on the shot clock the Jets had no business staying in this, being outshot 34-14, however Theo Kane's 3rd period goal would put the Jets away in another 4-3 win for Edmonton. With the Blizzard up 2 games to none and the series headed to Edmonton, Game 3 was a must win for the Jets. Well in spite of staying in it, Kyle Keenan's insurance marker would give the Blizzard the 3-1 win and have the best regular season team on the ropes. Game 4 and now is Stay alive or go home. Guess that's all it takes sometimes as the Jets raced out to a 4-0 lead and never let up, taking it 5-2 before going back home. Game 5 and was game 4 the turning point? Give it all you've got as Winnipeg hammered the Blizz net outshooting them 12-5 in the first and 14-4 in the second. But it didn't matter as Jakub Aittokallio ( Blizzard ) stood tall. In spite of being out shot 9-6 in the third, Jamers Both ( Jets ) would give the Jets the go ahead goal with 2 and a half minutes left. But at just under 2 minutes left, Jackson Rogers-Tanaka ( Blizzard ) would get his 2nd of the series to knot it up. But if that didn't take the wind out if the Winnipeg sails then Yousuf Scherbluk's ( Blizzard ) Buzzer beater with 8 SECONDS LEFT!!! Would be the final, killing dagger in this playoff hope as the Edmonton Blizzard would take this game 2-1 and the series in 5.

2 Seed  Panthers VS 3 Seed  Riot

Welcome to the other Western Conference Semi Final round. We have already seen one upset, is another in the making? The Los Angeles Panthers are coming in with home ice advantage over the Seattle Riot but that hasn't meant much so far. Game 1 is set in LA and we are ready. Right out of the gate, with 2 goals in 30 seconds the Riot are up by 2 in the first minute. By the end of the first it is 4-1 Seattle. Things are not looking good for the Panthers just 20 mins into the playoffs. Shots were 14-5 in favor of the Riot as well. In the second the Panthers made some headway, clawing back to within 2 and outshooting the Riot 14-9, however Rehn Miller ( Riot ) would add another one for a natural hattrick at that to make it 5-2 heading into the third. LA was not phased however and kept the pressure on, getting back to within a goal. So, the score is 5-4 for Seattle, a team that is reeling after their 3 goal lead has been chewed into. There isn't much time left but the Panthers have a powerplay. 30 seconds left and the puck finds it's way onto the stick of Valterri Bottas ( Panthers ) Who buries it to knot things up at 5. Shots were again 14-9 for LA. Overtime had a couple penalties for each team and shots were 9-8 for the Panthers. But the score was still 5-5. Just 2 minutes into the second OT, Grigori Pajari ( Panthers ) Who got the Panthers on the board, would complete the comeback 6-5. That is some serious excitement all in one game. Game 2 was gonna be something. Game 2 and just like in game 1 the Riot would score just a minute in. Outshooting LA 9-6. However the Panthers would score 2 in the second to take the 2-1 lead in spite of being outshot 10-8 in the period. David Winter ( Riot ) would knot things up in the third to give us overtime for the second straight game. This time we only needed a minute as Adrian Thomaz ( Panthers ) would snipe his second of the game to keep LA up in the series 2 games to 0. The series shifts to Seattle for game 3 and this time it was the Panthers who score first, ending the first with a 2-1 lead. By the time the second was done it was 4-1. But the riot would not go away, outshooting the Panthers 22-11 in the last two frames and getting timely goals from Chara Brojled ( Riot ), and Snowden Manning ( Riot ). That was the closest they would get however, being stopped 4-3 by the LA Panthers who hold a commanding 3-0 series lead. Game 4, with their backs against the wall can the Riot get a W? In spite of holding them to just 16 shots, John Langabeer ( Panthers ) would score the game winner with Jhonas Skarsgaard ( Panthers ) picking up the insurance marker just 30 seconds later allowing the Los Angeles Panthers to complete the sweep of the Seattle Riot.

1 Seed  Wolfpack VS 4 Seed  Rage

It has been an interesting first round thus far, and only going to get more unpredictable. With Winnipeg's elimination by the Edmonton Blizzard, all eyes were on the Wolfpack not to fall victim. Game one in New England in a massive rivalry series with the Manhattan Rage. The first was relitivly quiet, with Bryan Whisonant ( Rage ) scoring the only goal while the Wolfpack got into a bit of penalty trouble. Second period starts with a bang as Carter O'Callahan ( Wolfpack ) scores just 30 seconds in. Half way through, Dean Colt ( Wolfpack ) and Benjamin Reid ( Wolfpack ) score a minute apart to make it 3-1 for the Wolfpack. 1 second into the new play, Brandon Donini ( Wolfpack ) takes a hooking penalty that results in a Roy Razin ( Rage ) powerplay goal just 12 seconds later. Logan Valentine ( Rage ) Would take a hooking minor of his own 10 seconds into the next play and it would only take 5 seconds into it for Willie Weber ( Wolfpack ) to put New England back up 4-2. That's right, just 28 seconds separate Reid's 3-1 goal and Weber's 4-2 goal in one of the oddest exchanges I have ever found. The rest of the game would be rather quiet as the Wolfpack would go on to take it 6-3. Game 2 with the Rage looking to steal one on the road. In spite of out shooting them 14-7, MAN and NEW traded goals as we hit the second tied at 1. The second wouldn't end much different though NEW would out shoot MAN 13-7, each would trade a goal and head to the third knotted up at 2 apiece. The third would be all the RAGE however (Heh) as MAN would command play with shots being 16-4 in their favor. Its no surprise that Chuck Goody ( Rage ) would get the game winner on the powerplay after Jermaine Tennyson ( Wolfpack ) would channel his inner Billy Smith with a double minor for slashing. Series would head to Manhattan for games 3 and 4 tied at 1 win each. Shots would swing wildly in favor of each team per period again but Bryan Whisonant's ( Rage ) 2 goal performance would power the Rage to a 4-2 win and a 2-1 series lead. Game 4 with NEW needing to tie it up and MAN set to put them on the brink. It would start out in the Wolfpack's favor but a 2 goal performance by Daniel Merica ( Rage ) would help the Rage come from behind to take it 3-2 and the series pushed to 3 games to 1. Game 5 is back in New England where the Bostonians are drunk and chirping. Hoping for a tight, close contest but Manhattan would jump into the driver seat and never look back, taking a relaxing 3-1 win where special teams certainly won the day. 4 games to 1, meaning that the top teams in each conference combine for 1 win.

2 Seed  Chiefs  VS 3 Seed  Platoon

Game one is in snowy Minnesota and the players may have been flying, but the shots just weren't hitting the net. Shots were 21-17 for the Platoon but the game would end 5-4 for the Chiefs. Game 2 would see the feeling out process grind down into a quiet, defensive, tight checking series as the shots were just 19-16 for Minnesota, however it was the Platoon with the 2-1 win on Ivo Willems ( Platoon ) game winner. Moving down to sunny West Kendall Florida for games 3 and 4. This series evolves game by game as game 3 would feature MIN dominating WKP 16-6 on shots in the first, letting them jump out to a 3-2 lead, but peter off with just 10 more shots all game, letting a resurgent Platoon roar back to a wild 6-4 win to take a 2-1 series lead. Game 4 would see us settle back down for a routine 3-1 win, WKP taking it and a 3-1 series lead. Game 5 is back up north in Minnesota with the Chiefs on the brink. MIN would leap out to an early 3-0 lead and hold on to pick up the 4-3 win to stay alive for game 6. Flying south for game 6 and all they have to do is win again. West Kendall is ready to meet Manhattan however. Back to a tight checking game but this time it would be the Platoon holding on for a 3-2 win and take the series, before another set of long flights.

Round 2
2 Seed Panthers VS 4 Seed Blizzard

Both teams raced to topple their respective opponents, winning in 4 and 5 games respectively. Game 1 would take us to Hollywood as the Edmonton Blizzard and hometown Los Angeles Panthers would do battle to see who would represent the West in the quest for the Challenge Cup. Jhonas Skarsgaard ( Panthers ) Would pick up the first goal of the series but the Blizz would get 2 in the first and head into the second with a 1 goal lead. In spite of out shooting them 17-5, the Pats wouldn't be able to tie it up. third period, Panthers down by a goal, need a hero. Etienne Modano ( Panthers ) Picks up the HUGE, tying goal in a tight last 10 minutes. Game would stay that way into OT, and 6 minutes into it it would be Etienne Modano ( Panthers ) again being the hero for the Panthers as LA would pick up the win. Game 2 would follow a similar pattern, LA scores first, then the Blizz, then LA gets one on the powerplay, then Edmonton does. Blizz come out flying in the first overtime, but Jackson Weekes ( Panthers ) Stands tall. double overtime and 4 minutes in OT hero Etienne (Bane of the Blizzard) Modano ( Panthers ) gives the panthers yet another 3-2 OTW here in round 2. The series shifts north for games 3 and 4 and boy did it ever freeze the momentum LA had. In spite of getting the first goal they couldn't hold Edmonton back as Lucas Smith ( Blizzard ) would get 2 and give them a 3-1 win and their first of the series. If the Panthers lost a step in game 3, game 4 took all the wind out of their sails. Edmonton explodes for five goals from five different Blizzards in the first and never looked back, Mark Longford ( Blizzard ) would add another one and Jakub Aittokallio ( Blizzard ) would pick up a 23 shot shutout in spite of the line brawl. 6-0 was the score and the series has been drawn up at 2 apiece. Back to LA, and back to the same old. LA scores first before the Blizz would tie it up, but a huge powerplay goal from Tomas Pylon ( Panthers ) would give the Panthers another win and put Edmonton on the brink. Game 6 up north, LA needs one more to move on, Edmonton needs to force game 7. Pressure was on and the Blizz brought their A game, 4-1 was the score as the Panthers let 38 shots on net, only managing 26. Game 7, its here, its now, its happening. Goals came early here, Riley Forsberg ( Blizzard ) scored 4 minutes in, Nicholas Pedersen ( Panthers ) Knots it up 4 minutes later. A Gabriel Dujardin ( Blizzard ) Hooking penalty would lead to a Brian Morley ( Panthers ) Powerplay goal to give the LA Panthers a 2-1 lead. Then......Shots were 16-15 for Los Angeles over the next to periods but, nobody would score as a tight checking game 7 would leave the Panthers moving on and the Blizzard headed for the golf course.

3 Seed Platoon VS 4 Seed Rage

In the East its the battle of the lower seeds as both the Platoon and Rage made it to round 2. Game 1 was set for West Kendall Florida to get started. Aviad Ratzon ( Platoon ) Would get the first goal of the series, but Manhattan would score the next three. Oliver Pettyfer ( Platoon ) would get them within one, however the Rage would hold on to win 3-2 as shots were kept to a minimum at 18-15 for MAN. Game 2 where are you? Oh, its here, its next. Goals would be traded back and forth and, in spite of out shooting them 16-7 in the first, WKP would get out shot 29-11 in the later two, including 17-3 in the third. In spite of all of this the score was tied 3-3 after 60 minutes. Jamie Hawkins ( Rage ) Would be the OT hero however, giving the Rage a 2-0 series lead, headed home to New York City. Game 3 and Manhattan would keep up the pressure with high shot totals and an early 1-0 lead, but the Platoon would pick up two quick goals in the third. With 30 seconds left, C.J. James ( Rage ) on the bench for the extra attacker, Jamie Hawkins ( Rage ) would save their bacon yet again and tie things up at 2. West Kendall would come out flying in the first OT but it would yield no results and after 80 minutes, we would need more. 8 minutes in Aviad Ratzon ( Platoon ) Would come up big for the Platoon as they pick up a huge and important win in game 3. Game 4 was back to the tight checking and low scoring as the Rage would come back from behind to win 2-1 on a Daniel Merica ( Rage ) Marker. Game 5 back in West Kendall, with the Platoon needing to stay alive while Manhattan needs to not squander a chance to put them away. Things were going well in the first as the Rage would be the first to score, however a disastrous second period, including surrendering 3 and allowing 16 shots would put them behind the 8-ball. In spite of a 15-2! shot disparage the Rage were left futile with their anger as the Platoon would attempt to soldier on. Game 6 and yet again WKP needs to win to keep playing, Manhattan has to win here or lose all momentum for game 7. Manhattan must have taken game 5 personally as they roared out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back. Aviad Ratzon ( Platoon ) would get West Kendall on the board late in the third but it was too little, too late. 4-1 is the score of the game and 4-2 is the series.

Challenge Cup Final:

2 Seed Panthers VS 4 Seed Rage

The Los Angeles Panthers finished with 72 points in 52 games and were the 2nd best team in the league. The Manhattan Rage finished with 55 points in 52 games and were 8th best team and worst to make the playoffs. Here they stand for game 1. only 4 more wins separate each from the ultimate prize. The Challenge Cup. Jamie Hawkins ( Rage ) would score the first goal of the finals, his 6th of the playoffs for and early rage lead. As usual LA would then come back, putting in two before Manhattan could tie it. Off to overtime and I for one am on the edge of my seat. back and forth for 19 minutes with only 2 shots each. With 30 seconds left in that first OT before Jamie Hawkins ( Rage ) Would don the cape and become an overtime hero. 3-2 is the score with the Rage up by a game. Game 2 and no scoring in the first as both teams are still tired from game 1, however its the Rage scoring first, hitting the third with a 2-0 lead. After that? ALL LA as the Panthers would score 4 unanswered to grab the 4-2 win and grab game 2 to tie it up. Game 3 and this time Brian Morley ( Panthers ) would get LA on the board first. However 2 powerplay goals in just under a minute gave Manhattan a 2-1 lead entering the third. There would be a flurry of chances for both sides but Thor Ludvigsen ( Rage ) would add an insurance marker to give the Rage the 3-1 win and retake their series lead 2 games to 1. Game 4 and Manhattan would score first this time, even taking a 2 goal lead. But goals from Alexander Andrezjeck ( Panthers ) and the game tying goal from John Langabeer ( Panthers ) would send us to yet another overtime. First overtime would have no solution, however LA would have more shots at 9-5 and Roy Razin ( Rage ) and Moosejaw Boudreau ( Panthers ) would fight to a draw. Second overtime featured 8 shots a piece and Chuck Goody ( Rage ) and Moosejaw Boudreau ( Panthers ) fighting to a draw, resulting in the former being thrown out after he had beat up Valterri Bottas ( Panthers ) before the end of regulation. By Overtime number three it was clear that only Manhattan had their legs under them, with shots at 8-2 for the Rage it was clear that something was bound to happen. at 9:24 of the third overtime after a marathon 109 minutes of game time, Thor Ludvigsen ( Rage ) puts home the game winner to put the Rage up 3 games to 1 and ready to take home the Challenge cup. Game 5 is back in LA, both teams have had long flights and plenty of rest. The Commish has the Challenge Cup in the building as the Manhattan Rage have the Los Angeles Panthers on the ropes with a 3 games to 1 series lead. Panthers need a win, Rage want a win. Who will get the cup. 1 minute in and Tomas Pylon ( Panthers ) proves his name is irony in these playoffs with a powerplay goal to get the hometown crowd into it. LA would add another and take a 2-0 lead into the second. Volker Bayer-Holtby's ( Rage ) powerplay goal would cut into it but leave the Rage heading into the third still down a goal. The Panthers would take charge in the third and add two more goals before getting another response from Manhattan, taking home a 4-2 win and pushing this thing back to New York for game 6. Game 6 would be all LA as they would lead in shots and put up a routine 3-1 win. Game 7, the end all, be all, The Challenge Cup is all filled up for the champs to win the drink. LA, Manhattan. Nothing else all year has mattered as it all comes down to this. 60 minutes and the greatest party will erupt in one city. WHO WILL IT BE? Panthers would win the faceoff but Tommy Creller ( Rage ) would get two good looks in the first 30 seconds. the next 30 would have a lot of back and forth as each team didn't want to be the first to crack. Yuri Boyka ( Panthers ) would intercept a Chuck Goody ( Rage ) pass and send it to Valterri Bottas ( Panthers ) who would set up Etienne Modano ( Panthers ) for the one time goal at just over a minute in, exciting the Los Angeles faithful. A Grigori Pajari ( Panthers ) Roughing minor would suck away some of that momentum and a couple more penalties between the teams would come, but the rest of the first and second would have no goals. third period and some of the more inebriated are chanting for the Rage to go home, happy to take a 1-0 win. A Hooking minor from GM player Fredrik Wastlund ( Panthers ) would keep Panthers fans chewing their fingernails. once, twice, thrice, even four times the Manhattan powerplay is sent back to their own zone as the first group would change up and give the second a shot. Rage fans groaning at their ineptitude and Panthers fans ruthlessly making fun of them. But wait, the Rage are setting up, could we see another shot on this powerplay chance? It would take some nice passing, but Roy Razin ( Rage ) Would blast one home to tie things up at 1 here in the early third. A couple of minutes of physical play and a Panthers line change on the fly. C.J. James ( Rage ) to Daniel Merica ( Rage ) who sends it to Tommy Creller ( Rage ) who brings it into the LA zone, crushed by Turd Ferguson Jr ( Panthers ) Roy Razin ( Rage ) grabs the loose puck and hits the streaking Daniel Merica ( Rage ) who snaps one short side to give the Manhattan Rage a 2-1 lead leaving the crowd in a stunned murmur. Things would go back and forth throughout the third as Los Angeles Panthers fans would find their voice and cheer their team on toward getting the tying goal. Believing in their hearts that this team is not, could not be, and would not die. But as the seconds whind down and the score remains the same, the panthers buzzing in the Rage's defensive zone. Brian Morley ( Panthers ) to Nicholas Pedersen ( Panthers ) to Jhonas Skarsgaard ( Panthers ) SHOOTS! C.J. James ( Rage ) stops it, but the puck squirts out to Morley ( Panthers ) passed to Fredrik Wastlund ( Panthers ) to Tomas Pylon ( Panthers ) to Nicholas Pedersen ( Panthers ) back to Brian Morley ( Panthers ) but Manhattan wont give them a shooting lane and the MANHATTAN RAGE are you S22 CHALLENGE CUP CHAMPIONS!

That's it here for CptSquall and S22. It might take a while, but ill dive into S23 soon enough.

Sorry Wasty, would have been one of your most exciting I am sure though.
Honestly the Los Angeles Panthers seem to me to have a reputation as a constant contender. Diving through these history posts only grow that sentiment.
