Draft Talk, the Second: Piotr Horvat (x2)

smjhl draft article pls pay me my bonus

So we return to Draft Talk, the most incredible series I think I’ve ever seen hit the media sections of the SHL. I say that because it is the only series I’ve written. And I’ve not written it out of enjoyment, I’ve written it out of necessity, like all great writers. No great work was produced by a complacent man who had everything he needed, they all came from hungry people like myself, backed into a corner with writing the only way to get our if it. So anyway, I had a lot of fun writing about Marc Hagan in the SHL draft, so I want to share my love and time with the SMJHL, because I am not a selfish man and I want both leagues to benefit from the incredible scope and insight of my work. SMJHL draft it is now your turn. It could well be your turn again while this draft bonus is offered, so buckle up now and prepare to learn.

This time I will be talking about Piotr Horvat. Piotr is a Russian name, kinda sounds like Peter huh. Maybe it’s the Russian equivalent (note to publisher - look up this fact). Pete is the son of a longtime SHL player, Vasily Horvat. The Horvat dynasty is about to double in size with the addition of the heavy young man from the Motherland, but unlike his dad, this youngster wants nothing to do with that playing as a forward business; he’s a hard nosed defense man through and through and if you don’t like that, well fuck you. Slowpoke likes to make aggressive players even though he is a sweetheart. This duality is symbolic of many things in life; perhaps Slowpoke does it to challenge our modern perceptions of the reality of good and bad as clear cut one dimensional concepts; I like to think this is why he does it. At any rate, he knows how to build them, and with checking as a strength, Pistol Pete is not going to be doing things lightly. Checking as a strength is a hell of a thing man. Like you want to get that Checking up to 99 but why?? Is it because you have fond memories attached to every penalty box in the SMJHL and want to try relive your glory days? Or is it because you didn’t get hugged as a child and it’s the easiest way to feel a physical connection you can find? You know what, that was unnecessary, I really shouldn’t have said that and I apologise unreservedly to Pete for making those kind of assumptions about his upbringing. I’m sure Vasily was an incredibly attentive and emotionally available father to his children, and I say that without any trace of sarcasm.

Young Petey was a player who in my opinion should have been the first overall pick of the SMJHL Draft and I really rammed home to anyone who would listen (a surprisingly small amount) that he should be treated as such, but sadly for me and my pride in being someone worthy of attention from others, it did not happen. Instead he fell to the fourth overall pick, where he was selected by the Kelowna Knights, who had traded in out of nowhere to scoop up the teenager with the frame of a heavyweight fighter, and escort him off to the safety of their castle in the magical city of Kelowna. As I’m sure you’ll all know as SHL enthusiasts, Peterms father Vasily was a man who plied his craft with the Kelowna Knights and as far as I am aware from what I can remember (it was a long time ago and I have blocked out a lot of Deplorables era SHL trivia since). It is nice to see that Peter will follow his father’s footsteps but make his own legacy with a new version of the Kelowna Knights. The one question in my mind that really surrounds Horvat and makes me wonder is; where exactly was he born. This rugged man of the wilderness lists simply “Russia” as his birthplace. As I found out at some point, it turns out Russia is kind of big. There’s a lot of smaller component places in it, each with their own regional identity, dialect and set of values; one really could make the argument that there is no one, true Russia. I think it is this that I see as the limiting factor in my understanding of Pete Horvat. Although I have on paper some of the information that would traditionally hold notable value in an attempt to try and get to know him and dig beneath the layers of his character, without knowing this one important facet of who he is, I fear that this will in fact never be possible. And that isn’t to be a surprise to me. The Horvat family hasn’t got to where it is today without a flair for the dramatic and an ability to embrace pageantry, but still, how much would it change things if I were to find out these facts and delve a little deeper, understanding slightly more how the things that define Peter Horvat cane to be so.

In conclusion of an even more incredible, riveting edition of Draft Talk (if I say so myself), I will for the first time in the story’s long and established history, make a statement without even the vaguest hint of irony or humour within it. You will probably think that in making this explanatory statement that I am indeed not being serious, but if you were to think that you would be indeed mistaken. I am being serious and am not joking, so please stop laughing. Slowpoke is a great person and member, and Horvat is going to live up to the potential he has, the teams that didn’t take him when they had the chance will surely regret it and the knights of Kelowna will consider themselves incredibly blessed to have acquired him in the way that they did. I have talked enough draft, enough about the draft and enough of everything in general, so that means that this edition of Draft Talk has lived out its natural life and must now be taken out back behind the shed and put to sleep. It’s kinder that way. Thank you very much for joining me on this rollercoaster ride of a journey. The next one might not be able to but I will strive to have it live up to this standard. Goodnight SHL.
