The Tale of Colt Beckett

1076 Words

Colts father Wayne was just a simple country boy and local hockey star from Northern Ontario. After busting his knee in a fight with his two cousins over a stolen picnic table, his dreams of the NHL were quickly washed away. Wayne Beckett took the journeyman decision and took his talents overseas when he was passed over at the draft. Known as a crowd favourite, Beckett would often fight for his European teammates and became known as "Canadian Mike Tyson" throughout the various leagues. This led to a downward spiral of partying and drugs that would wind up to him being suspended by his team.

Afterwards, while wandering the streets of Frankfurt, he went into a local bar to drown his sorrows and luckily he met a ravishing young lady. This girl recognized him and said "Ahhhh CANADIAN MIKE TYSON YEAHHHH" and the bar went up in cheers. Although Wayne appreciated the fans, he wanted to be alone. This girl noticed the internal strife of this young Canadian boy and went over to him. After hearing his tales of woe, she took him out back to...

introduce him to the best marijuana he had ever smoked in his life. This instantly helped his depression and he partied all night without drinking or taking any other drugs. He returned to his team a new man, scoring 15 points in 4 games to lead his team to the championship series.

Although in game two he injured his shoulder, the team won the championship, and during the parade through the streets of Frankfurt, he told his German girl he wanted to be with her, and she said yes.

This German girl is pregnant before next season with Colt, and his father continues playing until his injuries catch up to him and is forced to retire. Colts earliest memory includes the moment the German team retired his fathers number and raised it to the rafters. Although a local legend in German hockey circles, he had to make money somehow. A local businessman offered Colt assistance in starting up his very own Volkswagen car dealership in Canada.

While living in Canada, Wayne wasn't as known in hockey circles so Colt didn't get automatically accepted to all teams he tried out for. Hockey didn't come as easy to Colt as it did to Wayne however, he had a hard time learning how to skate. Being discouraged by his peers quickly surpassing him in ability, Colt quit at the age of 10.

Colt turned his attention to ball hockey, a sport where there was no skating involved. His love for the game grew that he spent a lot of time playing ball hockey. Although at home, his father couldn't go in net for fun due to his hockey injuries.

While Colt was 12, the Becketts billeted a local Junior A hockey player in their home. He was the local teams goalie and turned into a big brother to Colt, and often played in net during street hockey with Colts friends. Colts love for hockey grew even more as his father took him to watch their billet brother/sons hockey games. The team wasn't that great but their billet was a fantastic goalie. Then in Feburary, it happened--

The billet was traded to a team in Manitoba. Colt was heart broken. The team he was going to was much better, but this meant two brothers having to leave. As the van was being packed, there was not enough room for his street goalie pads to be packed.

He looked at Colt and told him that he wanted him to have them to remember him. A young Colt looked up tearfully and just nodded as they parted ways. It was at this moment Colt wanted to become a goaltender like his "big brother."

Quickly Colt became a fantastic street hockey goalie, winning junior league titles left and right, even going as far as making Ontarios U-13 Boys team as a starter. It was after this tournament he told his father he wanted to become an ice hockey goalie.

His father was so happy that his son wanted to try ice hockey again. His local town didn't have an ice surface during the summer however so he would have to wait until the fall to begin playing. This was too bad for Colt as he wanted to start practicing right away, dedicated to becoming as good as his billet brother was.

Wayne Beckett left Beckett Volkswagen behind and took his son to Frankfurt Germany. There they lived with his Aunt and Uncle. In Frankfurt, through Waynes connections, he could get on the ice as often as possible. He made huge jumps in ability during this summer in Germany, getting to play with people his age and even older junior players. This , alongside Colts dedication to becoming better, allowed him to skyrocket his potential to becoming one of the better young goalies in Frankfurt.

Colt played 4 years in Germany, playing for the National Junior Team on multiple occasions. He still struggled with skating but his physical attributes genetically gifted from his father played a big part in making him a better goaltender. By 17, Colt stood 6'5" and weighed in at 210-220 lbs.

On his 18th birthday, Hockey Canada came calling. They wanted Colt to come back to Canada to play under their system to recruit him to their junior programs. With Hockey Canadas interest Colt was conflicted, to stay in Germany which he considered his home, or go to Canada which would give the best chance of him progressing as a player. Hockey Canada returned and offered Wayne a coaching gig in Junior, to sweeten the deal.

Seeing his fathers happiness at the opportunity to return to the game as a coach, he gave in. His father had took him from Canada to Germany to chase his dream, it was fair that he would do the same. He packed up again and returned to Hockey Canada, under the condition that he still remain able to join the German National Teams if they required more players or he couldn't make the National teams in Canada.

He set off to join a SMJHL team and continue his career to become a great of a goalie as his past billet brother, and help his father continue his dream of being a part of the game we all love.
