Siberia Sports Presents:  Off The Ice with Mika Kandinsky

For all of the skill and flash the big rookie center for the St. Louis Scarecrows has, you wouldn't know it by his off ice demeanor.  Sure, he is hard working as any athlete, but that comes with the territory.  It's his relaxed attitude and positivity about the hard work that really stands out about him.  Those that hang around him in the locker room note that he has a positive and excited attitude day in and day out.

Perhaps it's hard not to be relaxed when you come from such a harsh background.  Mika grew up in Siberia Russia, a harsh place to grow up and train.  This shaped his personality and gave him a resistance to hardships.  The SMJHL is a little bit easier of an environment.  When you spend time with Mika you notice that he isn't too concerned or interested in stresses or things outside of his control.  If he wasn't so competitive I'd say he could be described as laid back.  It couldn't be more opposite of how he is on the ice.  He is a confident young man who was raised well by his parents in Siberia.  He's also one to get into some mischief when he can get away with it.

Mika is also a little bit superstitious in that he takes a half a shot of vodka for good luck before every game, a tradition he developed back home in Russia.  So far he hasn't been able to convince anyone else in the locker room to partake.  "I don't know why nobody wants to try it, they all look at me like I'm crazy." He told me after a recent game.  His teammates get a kick out of his habit but they don't think too much about it as long as he continues to play well.

Laid back off the ice, and a fierce competitor on the ice, he has found a good home with his new team after the draft.  The team is happy he's playing well, but also equally as happy to have a positive and upbeat teammate to hang around with in the locker room.

As we get to the midway point of the SMJHL season, the story of Italian born, Latvian international star Calogero Crudelli gets weirder by the day. We were able to get an inside look into the life of the Colorado Raptors rookie to see what exactly the rest of the locker room is talking about. In his spare time, Crudelli loves to make acrylic paintings and has them all around his house. He has been called the modern-day Picasso by some painting experts and his paintings have been evaluated at over 25 million dollars. When asked about his plan after hockey, Crudelli insisted that he wants to play hockey for as long as he can, even if his paintings could be worth up to 100 million dollars in the upcoming years.

Crudelli also has a zoo in his backyard with some of the most exotic animals on the planet. He loves to wake up before morning practice and eat breakfast with all of them. Crudelli also has a nightclub in his basement which includes bottle service and strippers, which his teammates do enjoy. Crudelli’s rookie teammate and fellow party animal, Mikelis Ozolins, said that Crudelli was “completely insane”. Crudelli does agree that his lifestyle isn’t that of a usual SMJHL player but he enjoys his life and is always looking for a new hobby to add to his collection.

Biz Nasty the promising goalie prospect Germany is currently filling the backup role for Halifax of the SMJHL, but is showing strong signs of development and is reportedly making the decision on who to start tougher on the Raiders management. Biz remains the backup for now but there is talk of when he will get some starts and eventually taking over as the teams number one in goal. We sat down with Biz to talk to him about his development and the jump to a new league.

Q: Biz first of all thanks for sitting down with us, we know you're a busy guy right now. Just being drafted into the SMJHL as a goalie can be quite dull at times, not much to look at in the index, how do you keep yourself motivated to develop as a player week in and week out?
A: No problem, happy to be here. For me it's more just focusing on the bigger picture and setting stages of goals. I have them all written on a paper beside my bed and I read them every day, you just have to remember why you're doing it; for now, it's all about learning from the vets in the room on how to be a pro and just enjoying my time here.

Q: What are some goals you've set for yourself?
A: For now just getting starts, when i get some starts i can adjust the goals to taking over the starting roll and preforming well for the team. Obviously the big goal is the win a cup in the big leagues, but theres steps to that goal, and as long as I achieve my other goals im sure it will come.

As we all know Travis Bitties was born in Bern, Austria, and he was born with hockey blood. His uncle is current SHL star Tigole Bitties who currently plays for the New England Wolfpack.  Travis grew up playing hockey with his brother, and with his uncle as well when it was the SHL off-season.  Other than playing hockey, Travis excelled in school and still talks about finishing his bachelor's degree.  He was in the middle of going to school when he was drafted to the Falcons.  He may finish working on the degree online in the United States.  Travis also enjoys Soccer during the summer, and he used to be a football forward as well.  Although he wasn't the greatest football player he enjoyed it a lot and met many friends that he still keeps up with today. He also started playing video games during High School and was a Global Elite in CS:GO, since then he has been playing games with famous YouTuber's and Streamer's. All in all Travis is very active with various sports and hobbies.  He say's that he likes to keep a balance of things to not grow sick of one or the other.\

Canadian-born German goaltender for the Anchorage Armada, Colt Beckett, is a rising star in the SMJHL. The young goaltender signed with the Aramada a week ago, but has failed to get a win in 3 starts. We caught up to Colt after morning practice to talk about a lot of things, but what we wanted to know were what his hobbies and interests were outside of hockey.

Colt spoke of his love for snowboarding and music as some of his more common interests. But during the summer he is an avid downhill biker and bow-hunter. In Canada or in Germany, when he wasn't at the hockey rink, he was on a snowboarding hill at a local ski resort. He fell in love with snowboarding while watching the Vancouver Olympic Games as a kid, watching one of his heroes, Shaun White, capture a another gold medal. Musically, Colt prefers a mixture of Country music and EDM. Living in Canada he was surrounded by country music enthusiasts, but as he moved to Germany, he got caught up in the European EDM scene. He says country is for relaxing or hanging out and EDM is for partying or working out.

Downhill biking; like snowboarding; gave Colt an extreme sport outlet during the winter months when he wasn't training for hockey or playing ball hockey. His father, an avid hunter; taught Colt how to bow-hunt from a young age. He is looking forward to a weekend off to go hunting with the locals in Alaska.

What is the story with Piotr Horvat? The younger brother of Vasily Horvat is the first thing that most people think of, but that’s not all. Piotr has been much more vocal than his brother, but yet they both play a similar style of hockey, albeit one on each side of the blue line, but both play with a physical edge. Piotr is also very much the more rambunctious of the two. Piotr has a reputation as the locker room prankster, the one who is dragging his teammates out to the bars passed curfew, and the one who will get under the opponents skin with his antics and chirping. Off the ice you will always find him with his team out and around the town. He is the first to volunteer for community events or leading any kind of fundraiser. Unfortunately, anytime you see something in the news related to a local hockey player being a little to rambunctious or starting a fight, the chances are very high that Piotr is in the middle of it. Lets hope that he learns to control this energy and focus it into his game before something bad really happens once he gets into the SHL and the league and fan bases aren’t so forgiving for this type of antics.

Chuck Goody III, is one of the newest members of the Anaheim Outlaws but is a long time member of the professional hockey family. ESPN, the Magazine, recently took some time to get to know the third installment in a family that has seen multiple Challenge Cup championships and a Hall of Fame induction. Off the ice, Goody is a relatively flamboyant character. He’s often seen around town wearing colorful suits and a Scally cap. Many venture that the Boston culture has given him a bit of extra confidence as he learns to live in his new digs here in Anaheim.

“It’s certainly been a lot of fun coming over here to the west coast. I have so many old friends that I used to know from days on the east coast that are also over here so it certainly has not been much of an adjustment to fit in in the room”. When asked what his favorite thing to do outside of the rink is, Goody responded, “Isn’t it obvious? Get out here on the town and go grab an ice cream cone. The weather is wonderful here in Anaheim and there are plenty of pretty girls on the street to keep an eye on while I slurp down a cone.”

If you ever want to find Goody III, it sounds like your local Anaheim ice-cream shop is the place to find him.

Puhcheese in the Brothels Again
Grovel Mathis

For the second time this season, Lethbridge Lions rookie forward Tah Puhcheese was arrested on three counts of soliciting a prostitute this weekend. RCMP recovered the young phenom from something resembling a "trap house" in Fort MacLeod, Alberta, with three young ladies of the night in his arms. After being held overnight in the local RCMP office, Puhcheese was released on Sunday morning pending charges.

Note: he was apparently celebrating finally breaking his SMJHL point drought after collecting his first few points of the season within the past couple days.

With the three charges this weekend, two other counts of solicitation earlier this season, and the single count of indecent exposure from his first weekend in Lethbridge, Puhcheese is already well on his way to smashing the Lethbridge Lions season record of 8 criminal offenses set by Monkey D. Luffy just two seasons ago. Look to see him make a push in the upcoming Christmas and New Year holidays with big potential for further indecent exposures with some public intoxication for good measure.

Even with a disappointing start to his hockey season, Tah Puhcheese looks poised to smash records as a SMJHL freshman.

He's called many things. Bobby. Bob. Big ol double Bs. That guy whose dad has to come tie his skates every game. But to most, Bobby Bobcalf is an enigma. So let's shine some light on this elusive creature.

18 year old Bobby Bobcalf was born in Ireland to Barbara Bobcalf and John Bobcalf. After reaching the ripe age of 2 years old Bobby was already breaking ankles and popping bottles in his backyard rink. He grew up and continued to play the game, shaping himself into a scoring machine. He lived, breathed, and made sweet love to his twigs as he continued to pot more ginos. After an impressive showing at the SMJHL Bobby was drafted by the Vancouver Whalers in the 2nd round.

But Bobby's life doesn't completely revolve around the on-ice product. He tries to live a complete life by involving himself in other hobbies like knitting and woodworking. He says that these activities help him score by practicing his hand-eye coordination. Bobby is also an avid cook. He's traveled all over the world in search of the most rare and exotic dishes to add to his collection, but when he cooks for himself he likes to keep it simple: chicken breast, medium rare.

Ask any player or fan about SMJHL fan about Oliver Cleary and the first thing they will point to is his infamous holdout. The S48 SHL eligible player held out on the Montreal Militia and found his way to the Detroit Falcons because of it. But would you imagine that this holdout was more than a contract dispute? His Falcons teammates suggest that holding out may be a way of life for the young defencemen.

“Oliver is an enigma,” said a Falcons teammate who wishes to remain anonymous. “Originally we thought the holdout was solely due to his displeasure about being drafted by Montreal. But its so much more than that. Did you know that he can only use certain stalls in the bathroom or he refuses to go?”

“We keep trying to schedule team dinners on the road but he refuses to eat anywhere but Olive Garden or their Canadian equivalent East Side Marios. If we go anywhere else, he just sits in the hotel room.”

One player even noted that he doesn't even like breadsticks because he is “holding out against carbs this season”. On the ice, Cleary is a dominate player in his own zone. But it seems like off the ice, his physical play does not translate out to a tough personality. It seems like Cleary may be a bit of a princess.

Simon LeBlanc was born and raised in Montreal, Quebec. He grew up with an intense passion for hockey, like any other kid of his age. What differenced him from the others was his desire to always go further. LeBlanc kept wanting to learn more about hockey and was almost always seen with an hockey stick in his hands. LeBlanc was never really good at school, because he never listened to the teachers during class. He would constantly be imagining hockey games or creating strategies in his head. During the summer break, LeBlanc worked at his uncle’s farm in New-Brunswick, where his family is from. He developed his strength while lifting hay bales and heavy crates on the farm. It carried over and defined how he plays hockey. LeBlanc plays more of a defensive and physical type of defenseman. Even though LeBlanc uses his strength to his advantage, he never plays dirty. He firmly believes in playing fair and respecting his opponents on the ice. LeBlanc is someone that doesn’t like being in the spotlight. He plays as a team and will always think about passing the puck before shooting. He isn't a flashy kind of player that pumps out a lot of points, but he's the kind of defenseman that can be trusted on to protect the blue line.

Meet the Anaheim Outlaws' 4th-round pick, Noah Tedla. On the ice, you might know him as the hard hittin', penalty killin', puck movin' right defenseman. Off the ice, however, he's got a bit more to him. Hockey might be the sport he plays, but the Philly native is a fan of a lot of sports, including soccer, basketball, baseball, and football. Tedla also is a big fan of music, especially rap & hip-hop. As the Philadelphian he is, Meek Mill tends to come up frequently in his playlists. While we're on the topic of music, he even plays the violin, which he picked up in elementary school. When music and watching other sports aren't taking up his time, Tedla loves playing with his dog; a Portuguese Water Dog. As last words, a gave a message for young players who'd want to be in his position, saying "if there's anything you should live by, it's your work ethic, competitiveness, and love for the game you play.". He believes that those are the most valuable intangibles for young athletes in any sport to have if they want to be successful and make it as a professional.
