PGS S47 Game 70 - Halifax vs Detroit
#1

Falcons  Detroit Falcons vs Halifax Raiders  raiders

Today we are here to see two teams looking to make a name for themselves, the Halifax Raiders are coming from a 5-2 win against the Kelowna Knights. The home team, Detroit Falcons, are attempting to keep a win streak of 3 games alive. They won their last game against the Whalers in a 4-3 win.  Both teams are in the middle of the SMJHL pack this year after losing in the second round of last years playoffs.  It looks to be anyone's game today with very even teams.
The starting Goaltenders are Jakub Hasek for Detroit and Mike McKorsey for Halifax

1st Period:

And we have ourselves a game, both teams are struck even out of the gate and are going back and forth. Both teams are playing a great game so far with Detroit having 12 shots against the Falcons 11. Both teams were playing a team game and there were no penalties through the first half; however, around 13 minutes into the game Lunga Gumba recovered a loose puck from Franz Cooper right after the Face off and was able to get a solo breakaway and was able to deke past McKorsey and scored the first goal for Detroit. At the end of the first period Detroit comes up with a 1-0 lead in what seems to be a trench fight.

2nd Period:

Through the first half of the second period, Detroit has gone to the penalty box 3 different times. Even though the Raiders had 6 penalty minutes to work with they were not able to come up with a tying goal.  Halifax was very aggressive this period and outshout Detroit 13-3; however,  Detroit goalie Jakub Hasek was unstoppable this period and did not miss any saves through all 20 minutes.  This period was all about the Halifax offensive push and Detroit's outstanding penalty kill. At the end of the 2nd period Detroit was able to keep Halifax from tying the game, and Detroit was able to go into the 3rd period with a 1-0 lead.

3rd Period:

Right off the bat Freddie Sweeney, Halifax's 3rd line center, came out strong against Detroit and was putting pressure on Hasek and within the first 2 minutes he shot 4 times in a quick succession.  Sweeney and his teammates were staying on the offensive against Detroit and came up big 3 and a half minutes into the period.  That's right, Sweeney was finally able to get it done and score with an assist from Haley Knight and Ricardo Cotalay. Halifax was able to tie up the game 1-1 with 16 minutes left. Detroit was not happy, after that goal Detroit was able to play offensively and work the puck into their favor.  Detroit ended up out shooting Halifax 8-5 throughout the period. This was aided by the one power play they had midway through the 3rd, and not even a minute after the power play ended rookie Marc Palicka Jr. passed the puck to Bedrich Sykora and Sykora shot and scored! Detroit was able to regain the lead with a little more than 3 minutes to go.  Detroit held strong and won the game 2-1 continuing their streak of now 4 wins.

3 Star Players:

Lunga Gumba  Falcons
Jakub Hasek  Falcons
Freddie Sweeney  raiders

*I added Freddie Sweeney as I felt he had a great game.

Final Score:

Detroit Falcons, 2 vs Halifax Raiders, 1

Comment 2: Goaltender Analysis

Mike McKorsy (HAL)
21 saves from 23 shots
Save Percentage    0.913
Record 6-7-1
59:32 minutes played in the Loss

This game was a difficult loss for Mckorsy to swallow as he has and a rough start to the season. He has played well and is the best choice by far for the Raiders, however the team isn't playing good enough defense in front of Mike and in the end the pressure allowed on the goalkeeper has been a problem. In this game Mckorsy got backed up into his own goal and as you can see with the video replay still shot above the goal crossed the line at 16:35 of the third period and would prove to be the game winner. Going 6-7-1 on the year isn't easy to say the least but when confronted with the issue both coach and goalie have stated that this is just a rough patch that will smooth out in the future. It is a long season and sometimes you have to go through these kind of bumps in the road.

Jakub Hasek (DET)
22 saves from 23 shots
Save Percentage   0.957
Record 6-8-1
A full 60:00 minutes played in the Win

Hasek has had difficulty as well on the season and after this win is 6-8-1. One more loss compared to Mckorsy but Hasek put on a show this evening that even the Dominator, Dominick, would be proud of. Making 22  saves out of 23 attempted shots on goal wasn't as impressive as Hasek's athletic play this evening. The times that his team was unable to get the puck out of their zone is when Hasek started to shine making 3 or 4 saves that boggle the mind. It is obvious that he has been conditioning during the off days as he looked like a well oil machine and at times seemed like he was making snow angels on the ice. In the end it proved to be the decider in this nail-biter of a game.

Comment 3: Game Recap

The game was a defensive struggle for both sides as they both had difficulty getting into each other zones. Both teams were clogging up the neutral zone and making things difficult on the offense. Detroit got the scoring started at 13:56 of the first period from a perfectly placed tip in that Franz Cooper and Kavins Zvejnieks assisted on. The first period had a few questionable non calls but the refs seemed to swallow their whistles for the time being.

The second period was the opposite of the first as no goals were scored but penalties were called. Unfortunately the home team was called for all of them. The home crowd wasn't too happy about it and for most of the period you could hear the chanting about it. The league doesn't exactly like this certain chant and I am sure the refs feel the same way. It is never easy being a ref in any sport as you are either damned if you do or damned if you don't. These guys honestly do not get paid enough for the abuse the take. Detroit was able to kill off all three of the penalties that were committed and honestly the real star of the period was goalkeeper Jakub Hasek.

Savoli Tankovic (DET) for High sticking (Minor) at 1:40
Bedrich Sykora (DET) for Tripping (Minor) at 8:09
Kalvins Zvejnieks (DET) for Tripping (Minor) at 12:34

In the third period Halifax tied the game with a tic-tac-goal play and Freddie Sweeney got his 3rd goal on the season assisted by  Knight and Cotalay. Halifax finally got called for a minor penalty of hooking at 14:31 but Detroit was unable to convert. However, the pressure created from the power play spilled over and 14 seconds after Melty Holyblood got out of the box the Falcons took the 2-1 lead from Sykora's wrister. That goal would prove to be the game winner.

Comment One – Jakub Hasek Huge
One of the most interesting developments this season is how much the Falcons rely on their goaltender. Jakub Hasek has been dynamite all season and proved it once again in this game. Hasek turned aside 22 of 23 shots for a 957 save percentage in this game tonight. In such a low-scoring game, Hasek was on and made sure his team was able to press offensively. Furthermore, when Detroit started to get into penalty trouble, he made sure to be the best killer allowing the kill to go a perfect 3 for 3 on the night. Hasek was huge for the Falcons tonight.

Comment Two – The Curious Case of Freddie Sweeney
Freddie Sweeney has been one of the most interesting rookies this season. A late pick for the Raiders, Sweeney looked to be a winger for the team. During the season though, the Raiders management has attempted to play the forward at centre. Results have been middling so far this season. He sometimes looks lost adjusting to a position he's not used to playing. His face-off stats in this game were also porous, going 3 for 11 on the dot. All things considered though, Sweeney managed to find the back of the net early in the third to tie the game and give his team a chance.

[u]Comment Three – Depth Scoring Steps Up
Detroit hasn't had a great start to the season and this game highlighted a major reason why: the team isn't impressive offensively after their major weapons. Espen Knutsen Jr has been great for the Falcons this season but the rest of the team hasn't been great. The second line finally came alive in the first period though to combine for a big goal at 13:56. Off a Zvejnieks faceoff win, Cooper was able to find Lunga Gumba to score his third of the season to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. This play would end up giving Gumba and Cooper the first and third stars respectively. If the Falcons want to make a run, they need these guys to continue to step up.

THE DETROIT MURDERERS

The Detroit Falcons did not kill the Halifax Raiders in any way looking at the scoreboard quickly. A close 2-1 game with both teams registering 23 shots on goal would definitely be considered a dominant game by any side. As you scratch your head, I would like you to make your way down to the Special teams section, where the Falcons killed all 3 penalties that they took. Tankovic, Sykora, and Zvejnieks could all give a nice handshake to their teammates for saving them from a loss because of a goal scored on the special teams. Franz Cooper and Miika Salo both put themselves on the line, logging over 3 minutes of Penalty Kill time during the whole game. That will definitely wear you out, but winners do whatever it takes to put their team infront.

Halifax has struggled all season long and nothing changed in this one as Detroit took the 2-1 win. Halifax has had a inability to create offence and has played poorly defensively and that showed in this matchup. Halifax had 3 power play opportunities and could not get setup long enough to create a good scoring opportunity. Surprisingly it was a rather close matchup as Detroit didn’t play all that much better. Hasek and McKorsy played decent in this game to keep the scoring low! Hasek played the better game in my opinion and made some huge saves to keep his team in it.

Comment 2

Best effort off the score sheet award: Espen Knutsen Jr! Although he didn’t any goals or assist he played his heart out and made some huge plays! He had 4 shots on net that were real good opportunity’s but couldn’t beat the goaltender. Also he threw a huge hit that fired the fans and his team up! He went 1/3 in the face off circle which could be better but the effort is there! He had a few good opportunities on the power play that unfortunately didn’t go his way. He was also apart of the huge penalty kill effort that killed 3 raider power plays!

Comment 3

Faceoff king of the game goes to raiders forward Matt Kholin. This guy proved in this game that he is one of the best at taking face offs in the league. Raiders forward Matt Kholin went 15/24 in the face off circle in this game! When he’s hot in the circle he’s hard to beat on the draw! Unfortunately this was a loosing effort but his coach has to be happy with how Matt Kholin did in the face off circle. Face offs can sometimes be a huge factor in a game, unfortunately for Matt Kholin it ended in a loss. He will Definitely be a beneficial player for Halifax in the playoffs if he can continue to win draws like he did in this game.
