Julio Tokolosh S46 (Rookie Year) v. S47 (Sophomore Year)

What A Difference One Year Can Make

Tokolosh was taken 14th overall in the 2nd round by the Colorado Raptors. Much like most rookies there were no real expectations for his first year. Tokolosh put up respectable numbers all things considered, with 6 goals 2 assists for a total of 8 points. Tokolosh played the right wing with fellow rookie Jake Peralta on the left and Nick Brain centering them both. Tokolosh wasn't given much PP time thus his numbers reflect his TOI and usage. His second year on the other hand has shown the great progression and development that Tokolosh has seen in his game. He is once again seeing time on the second line but this time Coitus-Wagg and Smonk as well as time on the top PP unit. His average ice time has increased from 13 minutes to just under 20 minutes. Through 38 games Tokolosh 8 goals and 17 assists tied which puts him second in team scoring. He is also only a minus 1 on a struggling Colorado Raptors team. Tokolash has also become a huge part of the Raptors PP. He has 2 goals and 7 assists on the PP a great rise from his 0 points in his rookie year. Tokolosh has already shown that he is ready to be a huge part of Colorado's success if they plan on rising out of the bottom of the league.

In this PT we will take a look at season 45 rookie of the year Peter Larson, proud son of Anchorage Armada and Denmark. Back then young goalkeeper played 42 games and produced some pretty amazing performance from someone who back then was considered to be next goalkeeper prodigy. For example young Danish lead the league in save percent(0.898) and in goals against average (2.33) . Pretty impressive for rookie. Also Larson was 7th with most shots faced with 933. While in the spun of those 42 games Larson managed to put up 24 wins (standing 4th in league) while 3 of those were a shutouts (tied 1st in league with two other goalkeepers). Now in season 47 Peter Larson is solid between the pipes for Armada. At the moment of writing this Peter Larson has been involved in to 35 games for Anchorage Armada. As of this moment Larsons save percent is .898 witch is exactly where it was two seasons ago for young goalkeeper. Young Danish record in goals against average is bit worse than it was before 2.74 as of after latest sim. It gives him a place in top 4 in league in both of statistic elements. After 35 games played Larson has faced almost as many shots on goal with 879 this is sixth most in a league. As well as Larson has recorded 18 wins allready giving him 4th place in league between goalkeepers, but Larson has recorded only 1 shutout in this stretch of a game, it is tied 4th with 6 other puck catchers.

Casimir Stevens was drafted in the S45 SMJHL draft by the Whalers. They chose him
with the 34th overall selection in the 4th round. Steven’s chose a really good year to create as a goalie, as he was one of five rookie goalies to start 42 games. He posted a solid 23-13-4 record, which for a first season is quite impressive. He had a .877% save percentage, and a 2.99 Goals against average. He also had a shutout and 21 penalty minutes, which for for a goalie is high! He must have been going through some shit.

Fast forward to this season, and Casimir has locked down the starting gig for 3 seasons now. Last year he shared goaltending duties with fellow S46er Eddy Ask Jr, and this season he has graciously allowed rookie goalie Kasperi Braulin to play 11 games, due to Stevens being a callup to the SHL to play the minimum backup games. Stevens has a record of 18-9-2, and has a chance to set a new career high in wins. He has a .884 save percentage and a 2.71 goals against average. As you can see, Stevens has done a great job building his goalie and his numbers reflect that. His stats are a bit skewed due to Simon T being a fickle bitch, but he’s the real deal.

Espen Knutsen Jr. was a first round pick in the last season draft. He’s the type of player who you could on him to score the goals and lead the team. He has great puck movement and very strong shot. His rookie season wasn’t bad but it wasn’t great too. For someone who’s very good at putting the puck in the net, he only scored 4 goals in last season. Detroit was a bottom team because of their lack of scoring and they really needed Espen Knutsen Jr. to step up his game. He needed to be much more aggressive if he wants to be a better player. He had only 66 shots on goal with a 6% shooting accuracy. He finished his rookie season with 21 points which is not good enough for the team. This season he has improve a lot and the team is playing way better. His leading the team with 16 goals so far and with 10 games left, there’s more to come. We knew he had great shot but he had shown it during his rookie because he was not aggressive. Espen Knutsen Jr. had 113 shots on goal this season with a 14% shooting accuracy. The team has been better offensively because he’s putting a lot more pressure on the opponents goalie. In 40 games, Espen Knutsen Jr. has scored 37 points this season and the Detroit Falcons are currently 2 spots higher than last season.

Lallo Selman, formerly Sacha Selman has made quite the improvement over the past year. I can't say for sure if the name change has brought a new swagger upon him, but his output has seen a rise. In the 48 games that he has played last season, Selman only scored five and assisted in six, giving him 11 points in his rookie season. 40 games into this season, he's had over double the points. Putting the puck in the net 14 times, and matching his point total from last season in assists alone, Selman's contributed to 25 goals for the Outlaws, making him 6th in the team. Why is that, you may ask? Well for one, he's seen a rise in average minutes per game. In comparison to getting left off the PP for all but six minutes and logging an average of 12.13 minutes/game, Selman's had 16.87 minutes/game and been on the PP for 115 minutes, and he's been able to find some success there, scoring six and assisting four. Another effect of the increase in TOI is the shots he's taken. Sure, an extra four minutes of time might not seem to be that much, but 49 shots last year versus 117 shots this season is a huge jump. The sophomore has improved a lot since entering the SMJHL, and it looks like Selman has more to show.

Let's take a look at how Gunnar Soderberg, the Kelowna Knoots' capitain, improved over time.

Last season was Soderberg's rookie season, so it was a bit more difficult to get himself on the score sheet, just like any other rookie. However, he still had a great season, which allowed him to be drafted 2nd overall by Tampa Bay, in the SHL. We also have to take in consideration that Soderberg was playing on the 4th line as a center, even though he is normally a right wing. So, he didn't have a lot of play time and he wasn't really playing his most comfortable position. This season, he's playing on the third line as a center. He's getting much more play time as a result.

Soderberg ended last season with only 3 goals. This year, he already has 12 goals in 40 games, which is a massive improvement since last year. In total, he has 29 points, which is much better than his last season, with only 10. Soderberg also gained a lot of confidence since last year. He started shooting more and more on net. For instance, he fired 50 shots on net last season. This season, he shot 118, leading his team.

To conclude, a player's stats in his rookie season don't really say much about how good he is. We have to wait a couple seasons to see how he grows.

Taking a look at Aaron Wilson's first season compared to his sophomore season

Aaron Wilson's build rookie build was a lot like Bobby's current build: high scoring, but weakness everywhere else (except defense which was 70 at the end of the season). This build allowed him to get 6g 10a 16p through out his rookie season. He was 9th in scoring on his team, and 2nd in rookie scoring on his team. He ended the season with a -5 plus/minus and a 7.59% shooting percentage.

Let's take a look at where Aaron  Wilson is through his first half of this season:

Aaron Wilson currently has 12g 17a 29p through his first half. We can extrapolate to a full season for comparison's sake giving him 24g 34a 58p. That's a 3.6x increase in point production just from 1 season. Wilson's current shot percentage is 11.11%, a 4% increase over last season. But it gets interesting because Aaron Wilson has already taken 108 shots this half season, compared to 79 total in his rookie year. So, he is not only getting into more situations where he can shoot the puck, but he's also scoring on more opportunities. His plus/minus has also increased dramatically to a +10. This could be the result of an elevated role in the lineup, or having better players placed around him.

Esa Parmborg Was chosen first overall by the Halifax Raiders in the s46 SMJHL entry draft and in that season Esa posted a respectable 6 goals and 9 assists for a 15 point season through 50 games along with a -8 +\- while playing on the third line. Although the second season is only half way through, Esa Parmborg is having a great sophomore season posing 6 goals and 11 assists for 17 points in only 27 games bringing his points/game from 0.3 in season 1 to a 0.63 half way through season 2. Quite the impressive spike in numbers but this can be attributed to obviously the higher TPE number but seeing the ice time being bumped up an average of 3 minutes per game can always help pump those numbers. Esa has also been slotted back at Centre for year 2 which will bring some confidence playing the natural position. After playing the wing in his rookie year, Esa must be stoked to be back in the middle where he had succeeded all the Way up-to this level, regardless of position Esa has the skill set to play anywhere upfront but the comfort of playing your natural position is nice to have. Esa is having an impressive sophomore season and shows no sign of slowing down

Eko Van Otter’s sophomore season has been one of linear progression. The Anchorage Armada left winger had a respectable rookie season, posting 6 goals and 9 assists in 50 games. He has only built on his strong foundation by posting 10 goals and 14 assists in 42 games. Otter’s PPG% has increased from 0.30 to 0.57. Otter may attribute this to his first line chemistry with top-scoring veterans Xena and Olivier Cloutier who have respectably posted 40 and 41 points a piece Van Otter remains selfless when asked about then Armada’s success: “I really like out group of guys this year. We have a solid top 6, and a promising young base of rookies, not to mention we have the best goaltender in the league”.

In a year, Van Otter has progressed from a bottom-6 winger to a leader, and integral piece of the streaky, gritty and talented Armada. Despite being projected to finish in 5th place this year, Van Otter has the confidence that the Armada have the potential to make a deep run this year. “There’s more parity in the league now - this is the most confident I’ve felt about winning a championship in a long time”.

On a related note, Van Otter also attributes his change in off season training methods as a key factor in development. He discontinued training with his conditioning coach Adam Friedland and now works out with teammates.

Gunnar Soderberg, the second overall pick in the S47 SHL draft and 4th overall pick in the S46 SMJHL draft, is a current star for the Kelowna Knights and current team captain.  During his rookie year he had a modest season with 3 goals, 7 assists and 10 points. However it was clear that he was improving as a player fast. This seems to be true as so far this season he has 13 goals, 18 assists and 31 points. He has scored 1 out of 3 games played so far this season, compared to only scoring on average once every 16 games.  Although his goals have become way more common, he has also increased the amounts of assists by 250% already even though there are 8 games left in his sophomore season.  Last but not least, he is livening up to that C on his sweater by playing about 180% more. This is mostly do to the fact that he has been playing on both the 3rd and 4th lines this season, and that he was only on the 4th line during S46.  Gunnar has proven that he is here to stay with a huge increase in both experience and productivity.

Kristoffer Svensson

S45 5G, 5A, 10P, 35 PIM as a Rookie
S47 13G, 27A, 40P, 16 PIM as a 3rd season veteran and Captain of the Militia

From Svensson's rookie year to now, his stats really have improved. It definitely seems like he can see the ice a lot clearer now. You can tell that his shots have gotten crisper and on point. His assist game is amazing, a 5 to 27 jump is stellar. His progressions are consistent and a good example of how much the SMJHL can help an already good player.

For new rookies, Kristoffer is a great example of how much growth is possible. He is a great team captain, and extremely helpful in the locker room. having gotten to watch him at first from the 4th line, I watched where he would pay attention to on the ice to try and learn some of his defensive strategies. then getting moved up to the 1st line, and actually getting to play with him and not only see it in action but feel how he drives the team was amazing. You can also see that he increased his discipline on the ice as he has spent more time on the ice while taking fewer penalties. This could either be because of the decreased gap in his physical toolset from his rookie season to now, or it could also be that he has matured and taken out the mental error penalties from his game. It could also be a combo of the two working together to make the captain of the best team in the SMJHL right now.
