S47 SMJHL PT 5 - Rival Teams
#16

Well, if everyone in this league doesn't know by now, the St. Louis Scarecrows rival is most definitely the Detroit Falcons. We have a little saying about that in the locker room, but for the sake of mixed company, I won't repeat it here. What I will say is that although the emotional pull runs strong between these two teams, it's not really much of a competition.  I mean, come on. All you have to do is look at the stats for the match-up between the two teams all season long. Out of four games during the season series, Detroit managed to win only one. Kind of sad, right? Now, you may say, just look at the goals for and against for the series and you'll see that most of the games were very close. That is true. Detroit was only outscored in the five games by four goals, 18 - 14. This is why it is extremely interesting to me that none of those games went into overtime. I mean, I don't really think that Detroit is good enough to take us to overtime, but it's interesting none-the-less.

Since the Kelowna Knights lost to the St. Louis Scarecrows in game 7 of the Four Star Cup Finals last season, the tension between both teams have risen. On Kelowna's side, there is still the bitter taste of seeing their chance at the Cup destroyed in one game. The Knights then swore to do better in the next season. Unfortunately for them, the Scarecrows were still a little bit better than them. First of all, the Knights scored 20 goals in total against St. Louis, while St. Louis scored 28. The Scarecrows also beat them in total shots, with 198 shots to 135 shots for the Knights. So, the Scarecrows were better offensively against the Knights. But, the Knights managed to be better when in powerplay and in the penalty kill. The Knights achieved a powerplay percentage of 25 and a penalty kill percentage of 81.82, while the Scarecrows had 18.18% and 71.43%. So, the Knights did dominate in a certain way, but it was not enough to beat the Scarecrows' offense. If the Knights want to do better against them in the future, they will have to either prevent St. Louis from shooting or they will have to shoot more often.

PLAYOFF RIVALS: ARMADA vs WHALER'S

The Anchorage Armada played the Vancouver Whalers five times this season - The Armada went 0-5 against the third seed Vancouver squad, scoring only 8 goals in 5 games; less than 2 goals per game. - Meanwhile, the Whalers scored 20 on the Armada; 4 goals per game on average.

So, who would the Armada see in the playoffs? The Whalers, of course. In game 1, the Armada looked like a real threat. Fists were thrown, and fighting coincidentals were sent both ways - after many penalty minutes, the Armada forced the Whaler's to play overtime for the first time this year. Eventually, The Armada dropped the 3-2 decision.

In game 2, the Armada appeared to have a little more pep in their step - With less than TWO MINUTES left in the game, Xena potted his first of the playoffs - Anchorage 3-2. With less than twenty seconds left, Dale Miller potted a snipe past Larson - overtime again. And again, Dale Miller set up Jimmy Slothface for an overtime heartbreaker. With the wind effectively sucked out of their sails, the Armada tanked, and dropped the next two in regulation. For those of you keeping score,

Armada 0-7-2 : Whalers 9-0-0

This year, there simply couldn't have been a worse playoff opponent for Anchorage. [Image: armada.png][Image: whalers.png]

Sometimes, it doesn't matter what state you're in during the season. When you head to face your rivals, the setting changes. You want to come out with not only 2 points, but bragging rights as well. Facing Lethbridge was exactly that, at least standings-wise. Stats were just about equal in almost all categories. In the 6 times that Anaheim played Lethbridge, the Outlaws won three times, with one being in a shootout, and lost three times as well. In those games, however, the Outlaws had no trouble letting out their physical side against them. Of all teams faced, Lethbridge was the team hit second most, 92 times. Of course, this aggression displayed would lead to time in the box, and in Lethbridge's 21 PP opportunities, they did put 5 in the back of the net. However, the Lions did have their own PK struggles as well, allowing 8 goals in 25 opportunities. That 68% PK is the worst against among all teams they face. It doesn't help that just over 54% of draws were taken in the Lions' zone, and Westbroek, McShotty, and Rockatansky are 3 of the best face-off takers in the league. That can give a team a real boost, especially come playoff time.

Since the Colorado Raptors have been on the decline for the past couple of seasons, they haven’t been in a deep playoff battle in a while. Playoff hockey can cause multiple rivalries and the Raptors have been lacking that. However, there is only one team that the Raptors saw seven times this season, more than anyone else they played in the SMJHL. That team is the Lethbridge Lions. After having played them seven times and the series being as close and as even as possible, it can be said that both teams have had enough of each other.

Record: The Colorado Raptors narrowly edged out the Lions this season, having beat four of the possible seven games, to finish with a record of 4-3. The goals were very even, both teams scored 18 goals each. The Raptors only played two games at home versus the Lions and won both of them. When the Raptors went to the Lions barn 5 times, they only came out with a 2-3 record. Even though the Lions somehow had 3 extra home games versus the Raptors, they were able to squeak out the season series victory.

Power Play%: When looking at the advanced stats, the power play played a massive part in this series. The Raptors were only able to score at a 10.71% rate versus the Lions. They only scored on 3 of 28 power play attempts, the only team they had a worse percentage against was Anchorage. On the other side of the series, the Lethbridge Lions converted on 4/14 power play chances, their highest percentage amongst the teams they’ve faced this season.

Hits: During their series, the Raptors laid out 123 hits, the most they committed versus any team in the league this season. The Lions, on the other hand, had 121 hits, which like the Raptors, was their most hits against any team. The series was very evenly matched in goals as well as the hit totals.

Looking at what could be a sort of new rivalry brewing between the Kelowna Knights and the Montreal Militia. Over the course of this most recent regular season, each team fought hard against each other, but Kelowna was able to secure a 3-2 advantage over Montreal, although one of those wins was in a shoot-out win. We are going to look at both teams and their wins against each other and to show why they would be consider rivals.

--Game 1--

The first game between each of these teams was on Day 11 when Kelowna visited Montreal in their home arena to play them and Kelowna took a 6-4 win over them. Kelowna opened up in the first period scoring three goals after an early Montreal goal and gained the first period of 3-1. The Next period say Kelowna smash home another goal, giving them a 4-1 lead before Montreal scored two goals during the period to get them as close as possible with a 4-3 lead for Kelowna.

The third period say Kelowna seal the deal by scoring two goals and dominating most of the period before Montreal scored a goal at nearly the end of the game, but it did not matter as Kelowna took home the first win. Surprisingly, Montreal had a shot lead of 40 to 17, but Kelowna was able to control the game and score the important goals.

--Game 2--

The Next game between the two teams saw Montreal visiting Kelowna’s home arena, Prospera place on day 15. In the first period, we saw Montreal take the lead and be able to hold onto it for most of the period even though it was very back and forth between each team.

After the first period though, Kelowna needed to respond and they did, scoring three goals in the second period and Montreal had no answers to them during the period. Kelowna clearly had a fire under them during the second as they commanded a ten shot lead over their opponents.

Montreal needed to answer back to the Knights and in the third period, after ten minutes had blown by in the game they were able to get two back to back goals, tying the game up but Kelowna had their sights on them and ended the game with two goals of their own in the third, to win 5-3. Kelowna had the shot count lead, winning with 37-29 on shots.

--Game 3--

Game three saw the Knights returning to Montreal, wanting to continue their domination over the Militia, but it definitely wasn’t going to be easy as Montreal was on a two game winning streak over a three game home stand and they wanted to close out with three wins at home, a task which could easily be done by their solid team.

In the first couple of minutes of the first period, Montreal did exactly what many would expect and took the lead, but Kelowna wasn’t going down without a fight as they answered back after a couple of minutes and tied the game up, 1-1. The period ended like that with Montreal leading the shot count with 18 versus Kelowna’s 11.

The second period saw a much more contained pace but Montreal was able to capitalize on their chances, only three during the period but two of those went in and gave Montreal a 3-1 lead after the second period ended. Kelowna had five shots on goal but nothing went in, clearly infuriating the team.

During the third period, Kelowna had to come up with something to answer back but they were not able to beat Montreal’s goaltender and even after 8 shots on goal during the period, they were not able to catch back up to Montreal, and they won the game 3-1.

--Game 4--

Back to Kelowna for this game as Montreal wanted to keep the regular season series pressure over Kelowna and they showed the intensity in the first period of the game as after eight minutes in the game, they had a 2-0 lead over Kelowna. The Knights clearly had to respond and they were able to crawl back one goal four minutes after Montreal’s last goal and went into the intermission one goal behind. Montreal clearly dominated the period in shots, leading 14 to 6.

The second period of the game saw Kelowna turn on the heat and even though it was a closely contested period shot wise, Kelowna scored three goals over the period, two coming in the first two minutes. This clearly put the Knights in a 4-2 lead going into the third and leaving the Montreal coach raising many questions to his team.

The team would respond in the third, even though Kelowna held the shot count lead Montreal was able to score two goals during the penalty, including a last 6 seconds of the game tying goal, which would push the game into overtime. Overtime showed no result as both teams were getting tired and sluggish, and not much would come out with Montreal having the only two goals on goal during that. The game, going into shoot out, was clearly anyone’s game at this point and Kelowna was able to sink Montreal and push the regular season series lead again.

--Game 5--

The last game of the series would be in Montreal and many fans expected the Militia to win again at their home, as was the case most of the season. Kelowna wanted to change those facts as they came swinging out of the first period, getting a two goal lead before Montreal got one back on the power play and would let Kelowna go into the intermission with a 2-1 lead.

Montreal wanted to keep the pressure they were pouring on the Knights during the second and they were able to clinch the tying goal in the second, with their goal being the only one during the period and gave them a 2-2 tie going into the third with some motivation.

Kelowna didn’t want to disappoint going into the third and they tried their best, but Montreal was able to capitalize on a power play early in the period and after fourteen minutes they scored the game winning goal, even after Kelowna had a scored a tying goal after their power play goal. Montreal won 4-3 and that was the last time the two teams would play each other in the regular season, Kelowna squeaking out the series win with their shoot out win over them giving them the advantage.

--Stats--

Hits – Comparing the two teams on hits against each other, Kelowna posted a smashing line of 109 hits against Montreal over five games while the Militia was able to respond with 71 hits themselves.

PP – On the power play, Montreal was able to close the regular season series out with a 20.83% on the power play against Kelowna while the Knights posted a disappointing 11.76% on the power play, giving the edge to the Militia.

PK – On the PK, the Knights were able to hold a decent 79.17% on the PK, giving themselves a decent run overall against the Militia but Montreal posted a nice 88.24%, giving them yet again a win in the stat department against Kelowna.

--Conclusion--

I have to say, there are probably other teams out there that may rival Kelowna better than Montreal, but after this most recent playoff run, it gives a nice jump start to a decent looking rivalry between the two teams that will definitely blossom with some of the newer players already looking to scrap against each other. Only time will tell, but be on the look out for this rivalry.

Alright well a bunch of my Armada boys are doing it on ANC-VAN, and to be honest with how much they dumpstered us this season, I'm not having it. Our rivals for this PT for me is Colorado. It's 2:30am as I write this and I just want a morale boost. Also Tomen told me that a number of seasons back Colorado got an upset series win over us that shocked everyone. So how about we get into it and see just how good Anchorage is in this very small sample size?  Cry

GAME 1: (@ Colorado): 4-2 W

Analysis: Honestly this one was really close. Colorado had one more shot than Anchorage, but unfortunately for them the Armada came out on top.  Eko van Otter, who I had been bashing in the Discord for not getting multi-goal games (I'm sorry @hotdog seems I was wrong), in fact scored twice in this one to grab 1st star in the game. Captain Olivier Cloutier got a goal and assist as well, while the ever-reliable Peter Larson stopped a solid 24/26 shots. Solid outing for the first encounter between these two.

GAME 2: (@ Colorado): 4-3 W (SO)

Analysis: Oh yeah. Never in doubt boyos. Colorado can try all they want but this ship is unsinkable. Cloutier once again showed the Raptors what's good, bagging another goal and assist, along with a further goal in the shootout. Andris Dzerins netted a goal in the 6th round of the shootout, which proved to be the winner after Peter Larson promptly denied an equalizing attempt from Anastasia O'Koivu. Make that 2 wins, no losses!

GAME 3: (@ Anchorage): 5-2 W

Analysis: Cloutier just really hates Colorado this season, huh. With 2 goals in this one, Cloutier at this point had 4 goals and 6 points in 3 games against the Raptors. Anchorage get yet another win in a game that was honestly pretty close, as the two teams combined for just 42 shots between them, split almost evenly. The Armada are just simply cruising through this season series! 3-0.

GAME 4: (@ Anchorage): 4-1 W

Analysis: Lol well this one was just kind of sad. Colorado managed just 16 shots over the entirety of the game, a number that was a whole 5 shots lower than the Armada's output in the 3rd period alone. My boy, fellow rookie dman and fellow Johnson @frithjofr (Darnell Johnson) netted what would be the game winner in the 1st period, while Larson cruised through, only needing to save 15 of 16 shots in the blowout. 4 wins now. Season sweep next?

GAME 5: (@ Colorado): 4-3 W

Analysis: How do they do it boys? Season sweep. 5-0. Imagine actually getting season swept 5-0 lol fuckin Whalers >:(. Anyway, Xena bagged her 20th goal of the season, as well as an assist, to bring her up to 39 points. Rookie Joe Kerr netted the game winner in the 3rd period, with his 8th of the season, while vet Brock Emmerton won first star with his 2 assists, plus overall solid two-way play. Sweep secured.

Moral of the story, fellas? Don't bring dinosaurs to naval warfare.

I don't really know who our rival is, first season in the J.

Early on for me, it felt as though our rivals should have been Halifax. Two of our first three games this season were against them, 5-2 and 4-2 wins at home on game days 1 and 3 respectively. Throughout the season we also played Halifax more often than any other team, a total of 8 times. We took the series 6-2-0. Looking back at our games, they seem to have been relatively physical as well. In terms of hits both teams posted series highs against one another, with Halifax posting a per-game high against Anchorage, and in shots blocked the Armada posted a per-game high against Halifax.

Armada  Against raiders

Shots Blocked: We blocked more shots against Halifax than any other team with 75.

Hits: Again, more than any other team, we loved hitting the Raiders. 113 hits across 8 games. It should be noted that we hit the Knights 111 times in 2 fewer games, however.

PIM: Against the Raiders we posted out second highest PIM total against any team, 66 minutes across 8 games.

raiders  Against Armada

Shots Blocked: Even the Raiders were airing themselves out at an above-average level against us by blocking 48 shots, 1 less than their series high of 49 against the Knights.

Hits: The Armada were, by far, the Raiders favorite targets. 152 hits in 8 games. Their hit totals didn't exceed 94 against any other team.

PIM: For the most part, Halifax stayed focused and only chalked up 46 minutes in the box.
