Hello and welcome to Fever’s Season 48 SHL Entry Draft review! The entry draft took place on Wednesday evening in Calgary, Alberta and it was an exciting time for all prospects and SHL management teams involved. I will reviewing all picks in the first two rounds of the draft as well as any other picks that I deemed to be a notable pick and guaging the value of each selection. With that being said, let’s jump right into it and get to the first overall selection in the Season 48 SHL Entry Draft!

Kaspars Claude - Defense - Vancouver Whalers
The Tampa Bay Barracuda surprised nobody when they used the first overall selection on Vancouver Whalers rearguard, Kaspars Claude who was regarded as the consensus number one prospect by many experts leading up to the draft. It is rare for a first generation player to be drafted with the first overall selection in the draft but that is exactly what happened here, so obviously Claude impressed many of the SHL scouts and management teams to be taken in this spot. He showed unparalleled commitment and work ethic, logging 293 training hours prior to the draft, the most training hours. Kaspars was selected with the third overall selection in the Season 47 SMJHL Entry Draft and had himself a decent rookie season, posting 17 assists with a +9 plus/minus rating, 50 body checks, 36 penalty minutes and 43 blocked shots. During the Whalers’ playoff run that came up short, losing in round three, Kaspars had a pair of assists, a +1 plus/minus rating, four penalty minutes, seven body checks and eleven shot blocks. I see Claude developing into an elite level defenseman for the Barracuda and this was a great pick!

Gabriel Johnson - Defense - Anchorage Armada
A second straight defenseman is selected in the draft when the Hamilton Steelhawks selected Anchorage Armada’s Gabriel Johnson. The Canadian born defender spent 263 hours in the training room prior to the draft and he improved his draft stock vastly from the time of the Season 47 SMJHL Entry Draft when he was a second round selection, 17th overall by the Armada. Johnson had a successful regular season, finding the back of the net twice and adding eleven assists for a total of thirteen points with a +14 plus/minus rating, 49 body checks, 43 blocked shots and 28 penalty minutes. Anchorage’s time in the playoffs was quick, earning a first round bye and falling victim to a four game sweep at the hands of the Vancouver Whalers in the second round. During those four games, Gabriel posted a single assist with a -1 plus/minus rating, six body checks and a shot block. Johnson is another first generation player and is a great pick-up for the Hamilton Steelhawks and should develop nicely into a superstar defenseman.

The Minnesota Chiefs owned the third overall selection in the Season 48 SHL Entry Draft but due to a penalty enforced by the SHL head office, the Chiefs were forced to forfeit that pick. No selection was made in this spot, nothing to see here.

Oliver Cleary - Defense - Detroit Falcons
The fourth overall selection featured yet another defenseman being plucked off the board when the Los Angeles Panthers grabbed Oliver Cleary to make it three blueliners in a row being called up to the draft podium. Cleary was the first non-first generation player drafted and had logged a total of 301 training hours leading up to the draft, one of the highest among SHL draft eligible prospects. Cleary did not has the greatest season with the Detroit Falcons in terms on offensive production in Season 47, potting one goal and five assists for six points. What he lacked in offensive prowess, Oliver made up for in his defensive abilities and positioning, finishing the season with an even plus/minus rating with 81 body checks, 51 blocked shots and 48 penalty minutes. The Detroit Falcons swept the Halifax Raiders in the opening round of the playoffs but were ousted in six games when they took on the defending 4 Star Cup Champions, the St. Louis Scarecrows and Cleary stepped up his offensive game while not letting his guard down, defensively. He scored two goals and three assists for five points with a +7 plus/minus rating, eight penalty minutes, 14 body checks and four shot blocks. The Los Angeles Panthers made a very smart selection here and I see no reason why Oliver Cleary will not develop into a top-tier SHL caliber defenseman.

Calogero Crudelli - Left Wing - Colorado Raptors
The Winnipeg Jets were on the clock with the fifth overall selection in the draft and were the first franchise to grab a forward with their pick, selecting Latvian left winger, Calogero Crudelli of the Colorado Raptors of the SMJHL. He is another player who is not a first generation talent and had spent 288 hours in the training room at the time of the draft. Crudelli had a decent season with the Raptors, scoring seven times and matching that total in assists with seven helpers for 14 regular season points. He finished with a horrid -27 plus/minus rating on a last place Colorado team while throwing 48 body checks, blocking eight shots and taking 14 penalty minutes. The Raptors were swept in four straight games during the opening round of the playoffs but Calogero was a bright spot, scoring three goals and adding an assist for four points with a +1 plus/minus rating, two penalty minutes and four hits. Calogero Crudelli is sure to be a hit with explosive offensive capabilities at the SHL level and could be a fan favourite in Winnipeg. The Jets scouting staff did a great job in this draft position, scooping up the prospect that I’m sure they had their eye on for some time.

Piotr Horvat - Defense - Kelowna Knights
The New England Wolfpack make it five of the first six players selected to open up the draft to be defenseman as they take Kelowna Knights, Piotr Horvat off the board. Horvat was selected with the fourth overall selection in the Season 47 SMJHL Entry Draft so he took a little dip from that point to here and the Russian had 263 total training hours at the time of the Season 48 SHL Entry Draft. Horvat had a good Season 47 campaign, scoring three goals including a game winner with 17 assists for 20 total points to lead all Kelowna rookies in point scoring and ranking fourth among all SMJHL rookies. Piotr sported a +8 plus/minus rating for the regular season with 73 body checks, 56 blocked shots and 46 penalty minutes, not a bad start to his professional hockey career at all. The Kelowna Knights dream of a 4 Star Cup Championship came to an end in the second round of the playoffs when they dropped a six game series to the Montreal Militia prior to sweeping the Colorado Raptors out in the opening round. During the Knights playoff run, Horvat’s offensive numbers dropped off a bit as he scored once and added a pair of assists for three points. He finished with a +2 plus/minus rating, twelve penalty minutes, twelve body checks and nine shot blocks. The New England Wolfpack did a great job with their number six overall selection at evaluating the talent pool and selecting the best prospect for their needs. I fully expect Piotr Horvat to develop into an elite level SHL defenseman who could be a powerplay quarterback for the Pack one day.

Timmo Kyllonen - Center - Halifax Raiders
The San Francisco Pride were the first team to pick a prospect that was never drafted to the SMJHL but rather, took the free agency route when they selected Halifax Raiders’ center, Timmo Kyllonen. Kyllonen is yet another first generation player but only the second forward and first center selected in the Season 48 SHL Entry Draft following the first seven picks. He had logged 301 hours of training time at the time of the draft, a very good number for a player who was not drafted into the SMJHL and one of the highest of this draft class. Timmo seen limited ice time with the Raiders but was able to put up some decent numbers in the 36 regular season games he played. He scored two goals and four assists for six points with a -2 plus/minus rating, 24 body checks and four penalty minutes. The Halifax Raiders seen their season come to an early conclusion in the opening round of the playoffs when they lost four straight games and the series to the Detroit Falcons. The Finnish born forward went goalless with just one assist, a -4 plus/minus rating, two hits and a shot block. I see a very bright future in the cards for the newest first round selection of the Pride who one day is sure to become a top level SHL centerman.

Lyle Odelein III - Defense - St. Louis Scarecrows
The trend of defenseman selections continued as the first of four St. Louis Scarecrows’ draft eligible prospects was plucked off of the draft board by the New Orleans Specters with the eighth overall selection in the Season 48 SHL Entry Draft. Odelein III is yet another first generation player taken in the first round and moved up from his 19th overall selection in the second round of the Season 47 SMJHL Entry Draft. He and the St. Louis Scarecrows finished first overall in league standings to capture the Laurfier Trophy and Odelein III put up some decent numbers from the back end on a deep St. Louis team in limited ice time. Lyle scored two goals and five assists for seven points with both goals being game winners during the regular season. He also added 25 body checks, 22 blocked shots and 26 penalty minutes with a +13 plus/minus rating. The defending 4 Star Cup Champions were not able to make it four in a row as they were eliminated in the third round of the playoffs to the eventual champions, the Anaheim Outlaws in seven games. Odelein III put two assists on the board during St Louis’ playoff run with a +1 plus/minus rating, eight penalty minutes, nine body checks and seven shot blocks. The New Orleans Specters made a great choice here with Lyle who had 276 hours of training at draft time and there in no question that he will develop into one of the most feared SHL defensemen that has no trouble getting his name on the scoresheet.

Nick Connolly - Left Wing - Anaheim Outlaws
The Chicago Syndicate did not follow the tend with the ninth overall selection and selected Left Wing, Nick Connolly from the aforementioned Anaheim Outlaws. Connolly was selected with the sixth overall selection in the Season 47 SMJHL Entry Draft so he dropped off a little bit in that regard but had 304 total training hours on draft night. With the amount of ice time that Nick received, he put up a decent season for Anaheim. He scored two goals and six assists for eight points on the third line and added sixteen body checks, two blocked shots, six penalty minutes and a -6 plus/minus rating. During the playoffs and the Anaheim Outlaws run to the 4 Star Cup Championship, Connolly put up much of the same, scoring once and adding an assist for two points with a -2 plus/minus rating. He also posted seven body checks and two penalty minutes. The first generation, American born player should develop nicely into a great set-up man for the Chicago Syndicate and this was a very good pick for them.

Mika Kandinsky - Center - St. Louis Scarecrows
The tenth overall selection in the Season 48 SHL Entry Draft has to be considered a mild steal when the Toronto North Stars selected Mika Kandinsky from the St. Louis Scarecrows who was pegged to be taken off the draft board much earlier by many. The Russian center is a first generation player and had accumulated 277 training hours heading into the draft. Kandinsky played fourth line minutes in St. Louis and with that being said, had a very good season for the amount of minutes played. He scored three goals and eight assists, totalling eleven points with a +3 plus/minus rating, 24 body checks, four blocked shots and eighteen penalty minutes during the regular season. During the Scarecrows thirteen game playoff run, Mika scored three goals and an assist for four points with a -5 plus/minus rating, two penalty minutes, five body checks and no shot blocks. Toronto will be very happy with this selection and Mika Kandinsky will develop into an offensive force to be reckoned with once he is ready to make the jump to the SHL and gets some experience under his belt.

Satoshi Zizagooney - Defense - Detroit Falcons
After a little hiatus from defensemen being selected, another one gets taken off the draft board here with the eleventh overall selection by the Buffalo Stampede who take Satoshi Zizagooney from the Detroit Falcons. Zizagooney is a non-first generational player and worked his ass off to attain 325 hours of training prior to the draft and moves up a bit from his SMJHL draft position which was eighteenth overall in the second round. The Japanese defender finished third in rookie scoring during the regular season, scoring eight goals and fifteen assists for 23 points with a +2 plus/minus rating. He added 37 body checks, 48 blocked shots and eighteen penalty minutes, a fantastic rookie season. He had a great playoffs as well in the Falcons ten playoff games, scoring three goals and four assists for seven points and a -2 plus/minus rating. Satoshi added two penalty minutes, two body checks and six shot blocks. Satoshi Zizagooney has to be considered another steal at this point in the draft and should develop into an elite level SHL offensive defenseman.

Bobby Bobcalf - Right Wing - Vancouver Whalers
The San Francisco Pride are back on the clock at the number twelve overall selection in the draft and opt to go with the first right winger selected in the form of Vancouver Whalers first generational talent, Bobby Bobcalf. Bobcalf had a decent amount of training hours at draft time, coming in at 230 and stayed on par with his SMJHL draft position when he was also taken with the twelfth overall pick in Season 47. He put up some decent offensive numbers for a fourth line player during the regular season, scoring four goals and two assists for six points but held a terrible plus/minus rating of -13. Bobby delivered 27 body checks and blocked three shots with four penalty minutes. The Vancouver Whalers made it all the way to the third round of the playoffs before being eliminated by the Montreal Militia and Bobcalf put up some decent numbers during their playoff run. He scored a pair of goals, one of which was a game winner with a -1 plus/minus rating and four body checks. Bobby Bobcalf was a decent pick in this draft position and should develop into a nice offensive piece for the Pride.

Padraig Sarantez - Defense - Montreal Militia
I feel like I am repeating myself here but yet again, another defenseman gets snagged off of the draft board, the year of the defenseman I guess. The Texas Renegades were on the clock here at the number thirteen overall selection in the draft and elected to go with Montreal Militia blueliner, Padraig Sarantez who is not a first generation player. Sarantez had logged 286 hours of training as of draft day and had a good regular season statistically for the Militia, scoring two goals and nine assists for eleven total points with 68 body checks, 40 blocked shots, 42 penalty minutes and a +6 plus/minus rating. During Montreal’s run to the 4 Star Cup Championship where they eventually lost to the Anaheim Outlaws, Pedro posted five assists with a +1 plus/minus rating, 26 penalty minutes, 32 body checks and 13 shot blocks. This was a very good selection and Padraig Sarantez has all the tools to develop into an elite SHL defender who can be great on both sides of the puck.

Barrett Blackwood - Right Wing - St. Louis Scarecrows
At the number fourteen overall slot in the draft, we see a third Scarecrow come off of the draft board, first generation right winger Barrett Blackwood to the Edmonton Blizzard this time. Blackwood had 256 total hours of training prior to the draft and had a decent season on the Scarecrows’ fourth line, finding the back of the net six times including one game winning goal and three assists for nine points with a +2 plus/minus rating. Barrett had 26 body checks during the regular season with three blocked shots and four penalty minutes. During St. Louis’ thirteen game playoff run, Blackwood posted no goals and two assists for two points with a -5 plus/minus rating, no penalty minutes, seven body checks and a shot block. This was a good pick from Edmonton late in the first round of the draft and they will be happy to see Barrett Blackwood grow and fruition into a big time goal scorer at the SHL level.

Atlas Rush - Right Wing - Halifax Raiders
The fifteenth overall selection in the Season 48 SMJHL Entry Draft has to be considered a huge steal for the Calgary Dragons who selected right winger, Atlas Rush from the Halifax Raiders. Rush is a non-first generational talent who was selected ninth overall during the Season 47 SMJHL Entry Draft and led the entire Season 48 SHL draft class on draft night as far as training hours goes, with 329. He did not put up all that great of offensive numbers for the Raiders during the regular season, scoring a single goal and three assists for four points with a -3 plus/minus rating but as we all know, power forwards take more time to develop and his defensive game was impressive. He delivered the fourth most body checks in the SMJHL with 109, blocked six shots and took 41 minutes in penalties. Like previously mentioned, the Halifax Raiders stay in the Season 48 SMJHL playoffs was a short one and Atlas was not able to put any points on the scoresheet with a -4 plus/minus rating, surprisingly no penalty minutes, fourteen body checks and nary a shot block. Calgary is going to very happy with Atlas Rush when he develops into that feared power forward that we all know he can become.

Kasperi Braulin - Goaltender - Vancouver Whalers
With the final pick in the opening round of the draft, the first goaltender is plucked off of the draft board when the West Kendall Platoon select Kasperi Braulin from the Vancouver Whalers, a non-first generation talent who had 269 training hours at the time of the draft and was selected late in the Season 47 SMJHL Entry Draft, 33rd overall in round four. Braulin seen limited action between the pipes for Vancouver as they already had Casimir Stevens pegged as their starting netminder but he did put up some good numbers. Over the course of the regular season, he started twelve games with another relief appearance and finished with a 6-6-1 record, 0.890 save percentage, 2.51 goals against average, four penalty minutes and no shutouts or assists. Kasperi never started any of the Whalers’ playoff games but did come in on relief duty once, stopping all three shots he faced for a 1.000 save percentage and 0.00 goals against average in seventeen minutes of playing time. Kasperi Braulin was a good pick in this draft position and should develop into a star goaltender for the West Kendall Platoon in the future.

Emiko Spector - Goaltender - Detroit Falcons
To open up the second round, after no goaltenders were selected through the first fifteen picks, a second straight one gets taken at the number seventeen overall selection. Emiko Spector of the Detroit Falcons is the young man who gets his name called up to the draft podium this time, a goaltender who was never drafted in the Season 47 SMJHL Entry Draft but signed as a free agent. The Japanese netminder is not of first generational talent and accumulated 229 hours of training as of draft night. Spector never made a single appearance during the regular season for Detroit and during their playoff run, came in on relief for Jakub Hasek on three occasions. In those three appearances, Emiko played 79 total minutes with all three games being a no decision for him, he recorded a 0.872 save percentage and 4.57 goals against average. Emiko Spector probably could have been selected later on in the draft but the Tampa Bay Barracuda did not hold a third round selection and it seemed that this was the prospect that they felt was the best fit for the organization. With limited play, time will tell if he can develop into a SHL caliber goaltender.

Joe Kerr - Right Wing - Anchorage Armada
The Los Angeles Panthers were on the clock at the number eighteen overall selection with their second pick of the draft and they decided to select right winger, Joe Kerr from the Anchorage Armada. Kerr had a total of 293 training hours on the draft floor and was selected eighth overall in the Season 47 SMJHL Entry Draft, another prospect who is not a first generation player. Kerr had a productive regular season with Anchorage, scoring eight times and adding sixteen assists for 24 points, second among SMJHL rookies. He finished the season with a -4 plus/minus rating, 34 body checks, five blocked shots and six penalty minutes. In the Armada’s short-lived playoff run, Joe was pointless in four games with a -6 plus/minus rating, four penalty minutes and seven body checks. Los Angeles made a smart pick here and Joe Kerr should have no trouble at all developing into a great playmaking SHL forward.

Noah Tedla - Defense - Anaheim Outlaws
The number nineteen overall selection in the draft comes from the 4 Star Cup winning Anaheim Outlaws in the form of defenseman, Noah Tedla. Tedla is a first generation prospect who had 274 training hours under his belt at the time of the draft and was selected at the number 32 spot in the fourth round of the Season 47 SMJHL Entry Draft, thus his draft stock rocketed from that time. Noah was a mainstay on the Outlaws third pairing and had himself a good season, scoring a goal to go with nineteen assists for 20 points and a -2 plus/minus rating with 62 body checks, 66 blocked shots and 42 penalty minutes. During Anaheim’s eighteen game run to the cup, he put up four assists with a +4 plus/minus rating, sixteen penalty minutes, 20 body checks and fifteen shot blocks. Noah Tedla was a great pick-up for the Minnesota Chiefs and watch out for him to develop into one of the better two-way defensemen in the SHL.

Zarley Zalapski - Defense - Montreal Militia
The New Orleans Specters were the owners of the 20th overall selection in the draft and made the decision to select another defender in the form of Zarley Zalapski of the Montreal Militia, a first generation talent who logged 316 hours of training as of draft day who was selected in the third round, 27th overall of his SMJHL draft. Zalapski had himself a good season in Montreal, posting one goal and eighteen assists for nineteen total points on the season with a +4 plus/minus rating, 37 body checks, 49 blocked shots and 36 penalty minutes. In the Militia’s nineteen playoff games, Zarley stepped up offensively with a pair of goals and nine assists for eleven points, a +2 plus/minus rating, twelve penalty minutes, nineteen body checks and 24 shot blocks. This was a tremendous selection by New Orleans in my opinion and Zarley Zalapski should become an elite SHL offensive defenseman who is not a defensive liability in the near future.

Josef Novotny - Center - Kelowna Knights
The 21st overall selection in this draft was in the hands of the West Kendall Platoon and their selection was an SMJHL free agent signing of the Kelowna Knights, centerman, Josef Novotny. Novotny is not a first generation player and had spent 229 hours in the training room at the time of the Season 48 SHL Entry Draft. Novotny played 39 games with Kelowna during the regular season, picking up a goal and two assists for three points with a -2 plus/minus rating, four body checks and two penalty minutes, playing an average of nine minutes per game. During the Knights ten playoff games, Josef stepped his offensive game up a bit, scoring a goal and three assists for four points with a -1 plus/minus rating, a pair of body checks and shot blocks each in sixteen minutes of ice time per game. Josef Novotny is a decent pick by West Kendall and if the Czech forward can develop his offensive game at the SMJHL level first and then the SHL level, he should be a very nice piece for the Platoon.

Ravyn Tedisko - Right Wing - Montreal Militia
The New England Wolfpack were back on the clock with their second selection of the draft at 22nd overall and they elected to go with Montreal Militia first generation right winger, Ravyn Tedisko. Tedisko collected a total of 263 training hours heading into the Season 48 SHL Entry Draft and was selected with the fifteenth overall selection in the Season 47 SMJHL Entry Draft so his draft stock dropped a little bit since that time. He put up a good SMJHL rookie season with Montreal, scoring nine goals and four assists for thirteen points with a +7 plus/minus rating, 62 body checks, three blocked shots and 25 penalty minutes. Ravyn helped the Militia on their way to becoming the 4 Star Cup runners up in the playoffs, posting eight goals and four assists for twelve points, a -4 plus/minus rating, 22 penalty minutes, 44 body checks and three shot blocks. New England made a great selection here with Ravyn Tedisko, adding another quality prospect to their cupboard and will be happy to see him develop into a great two-way forward who can challenge for the Dar Trophy at the SHL level.

Jon Forty-One - Right Wing - Vancouver Whalers
The Minnesota Chiefs stepped back onto the draft podium with the number 23 overall selection and they decided to go with first generational winger, Jon Forty-One of the Vancouver Whalers who had put in 243 hours of training time as of draft day. Forty-One was a free agent signing prior to the beginning of Season 47 and had some decent numbers for Vancouver during the regular season, scoring five goals and three assists for eight points with a -8 plus/minus rating, 31 body checks, four blocked shots and twelve penalty minutes with one game-winning and one game tying-goal. In the playoffs, Jon was not nearly as productive, being held off the scoresheet in all ten games with a -1 plus/minus rating, four penalty minutes, seven body checks and a shot block. Jon Forty-One was a good pick in this draft position and we have to see what he develops into but he is definitely a big help to the Chiefs looking to re-stock their prospect cupboard.

Jonas Larsen - Left Wing - Anchorage Armada
The 24th overall draft selection in Season 48 belonged to the SAN Francisco Pride and they opted to select another forward, their third in this draft when they take first generation left winger, Anchorage’s Jonas Larsen. Larsen did not get drafted into the SMJHL but rather signed as a free agent with the Armada prior to the commencement of Season 47 and totalled 223 training hours leading into the SHL Entry Draft. Jonas had a decent regular season numbers wise, lighting the lamp five time with seven apples for twelve points and a -7 plus/minus rating, 33 body checks, two blocked shots and twelve penalty minutes. In Anchorage’s four playoff games, he could not work himself onto the scoresheet aside from five body checks and an even plus/minus rating. Jonas Larsen completes the forward line of prospects for the San Francisco Pride and was a good pick who should continue to develop and become that SHL level scorer that they are hoping for.

Simon LeBlanc - Defense - Kelowna Knights
The Los Angeles Panthers get a chance to make a draft selection for the second time here at 25th overall and following a forward selection earlier, they go with Kelowna Knights blueliner, Simon LeBlanc here who was drafted 30th overall in the third round of the Season 47 SMJHL Entry Draft. LeBlanc collected a total of 240 training hours to this point, a first generation Canadian born stay at home defenseman. Simon had a good offensive output for the Knights for a stay at home guy in the Season 47 regular season, scoring three goals (one game winner) and four assists for seven points and a +4 plus/minus rating. He excelled defensively with 57 body checks, 46 blocked shots and 28 penalty minutes. During the 4 Star Cup playoffs, he did not find as much success, going pointless with a -3 plus/minus rating, eight penalty minutes, ten body checks and seven shot blocks in ten games played. Simon LeBlanc was another good selection from the Los Angeles Panthers and although he won’t dazzle you with anything special, I see him developing into a tough as nails SHL defenseman who will likely contend for the Bojo Biscuit Trophy annually and eat up tough minutes playing against opposing teams’ top players.

Raphael d'Alcott - Left Wing - Anchorage Armada
The 26th overall selection in the Season 48 SHL Entry Draft had the Edmonton Blizzard step back onto the draft podium for their second pick of the night and elect to go with Anchorage Armada left winger, Raphael d'Alcott, a first generation talent who had 238 hours in the training room and signed as a free agent with the Armada part way through Season 47. d’Alcott slotted in on Anchorage’s third line and had a decent regular season there, accumulating three goals and three assists for six points, a -7 plus/minus rating, nineteen body checks, five blocked shots and twelve penalty minutes in 39 games played. He was one of the top scorers for the Armada in the playoffs, scoring twice with a +1 plus/minus rating, two penalty minutes and four body checks. He should be a good piece for Edmonton moving forward and will hope to translate his game to be more of an offensive force, at the SMJHL level first and then the SHL when called upon.

Biz Nasty - Goaltender - Halifax Raiders
The Edmonton Blizzard had a second consecutive selection so they stayed put on the draft podium for pick number 27 in the draft and went with a goaltender, Biz Nasty of the Halifax Raiders, a non-first generation draft eligible prospect. Nasty was drafted by Halifax in the third round of the Season 47 SMJHL Entry Draft with the 28th overall selection and had 281 training hours at the time of the SHL Entry Draft. Biz seen limited action with the Raiders, backing up Mike McKorsy and starting between the pipes in thirteen regular season games, posting a record of 5-8-0 with a 0.895 save percentage and 3.04 goals against average in 771 minutes of playing time. During Halifax’s four games in the playoffs, he never seen a single minute of ice time but should get his chance to start in the Raiders crease in due time. Biz Nasty was one of the better goalies left on the draft board and thus a good pick for the Blizzard who hope he can develop into a quality SHL starter and be the successor of veteran, Tommy Tuck.

Darnell Johnson - Defense - Anchorage Armada
The New Orleans Specters had another turn to make a selection here at the number 29 overall slot and took Anchorage Armada free agent signing and blueliner, Darnell Johnson who is of first generational talent and had 238 total hours of training by the time his name was called. Johnson played in all 50 regular season games, scoring twice and adding ten assists for twelve points and a +7 plus/minus rating, 83 body checks, 54 blocked shots and 38 penalty minutes. Darnell did not put up any points during the postseason with a -3 plus/minus rating, four penalty minutes, eight body checks and two shot blocks. The Specters made a good selection here with Darnell Johnson who should progress and be a great defensive stalwart for them on the blueliner in the future.

Patrick Niederreiter - Goaltender - Anaheim Outlaws
Another goaltender came off the draft board with the Texas Renegades’ second selection of the draft when they took Anaheim Outlaws back-up netminder, Patrick Niederreiter who was a free agent signing by Anaheim and never drafted into the SMJHL. Niederreiter is yet another first generation player and had spent 228 hours in the training room. Patrick started five games during the regular season and posted a 2-3-0 record with a 0.846 save percentage and 4.44 goals against average. He seen very little playing time with the Outlaws in the playoffs, appearing in just two games in relief appearances and posted a 1-1-0 record with a 0.857 save percentage and 2.63 goals against average but gained a 4 Star Cup ring. Time will tell if this is a good pick for the Texas Renegades as goaltenders tend to take longer to develop but Patrick Niederreiter seems to be on the right track for success.

Jaako Jarvinen - Defense - Halifax Raiders
The Minnesota Chiefs get another draft selection in the 30th overall spot and do not hesitate to select Halifax Raiders defenseman, Jaako Jarvinen who was selected in the second round, sixteenth overall of the Season 47 SMJHL Entry Draft. Jaako is first a generation prospect who at the time of the SHL draft, had 246 training hours. He played on the Raiders’ second pairing during the regular season, scoring a goal and ten assists for eleven points with a -7 plus/minus rating, 42 body checks, 56 blocked shots and 28 penalty minutes. In the playoffs, he was promoted to the top pairing and posted two assists, a -2 plus/minus rating, two body checks and seven shot blocks. Jaako Jarvinen was a very good selection for the Minnesota Chiefs and should translate his game into the SHL in due time to become a great defender for the Chiefs.

Alexander Thorstrom - Goaltender - Colorado Raptors
The Calgary Dragons definitely got themselves a steal of a pick when they stepped up and selected Alexander Thorstrom, goaltender of the Colorado Raptors with the 31st overall selection in the draft. Thorstrom was the second overall pick in the Season 47 SMJHL Entry Draft by the Colorado Raptors and spent 246 hours in the training room, a non-first generational player. Alexander quickly became the starter between the pipes for Colorado and had a decent season as a rookie, going 10-18-3 with a 0.875 save percentage, 3.28 goals against average, two shutouts and an assist in the regular season. In the playoffs, he started three of the Raptors’ four games, posting a record of 0-2-1 with a 0.863 save percentage and 4.14 goals against average. The Calgary Dragons will have to wait for Alexander Thorstrom to develop his game before he is ready to take over for an aging Richard C. Hocolate but there is no question in my mind that he will become a superstar SHL goaltender.

Stavros Halkias - Center - Anchorage Armada
With the final selection in the second round of the draft, at 32nd overall, the Los Angeles Panthers had their eye on first generation centerman, Stavros Halkias of the Anchorage Armada. Stavros did not get drafted into the SMJHL but signed a contract with Anchorage as a free agent before the start of the Season 47 regular season and logged a total of 221 training hours. During the 50 game regular season schedule, Halkias scored eight goals and eights assists to total sixteen points with a -8 plus/minus rating, 39 body checks, five blocked shots and sixteen penalty minutes. In the playoffs, he put one assist on the board, an even plus/minus rating and five penalty minutes. Stavros Halkias was a decent pick-up for the Panthers late in the second round and should develop nicely into an SHL caliber playmaking center.

Tah Puhcheese - Right Wing - Kelowna Knights
The Winnipeg Jets second selection in the Season 48 SHL Entry Draft did not come until the third round, 37th overall and they got themselves a steal in Kelowna Knights right winger, Tah Puhcheese who flew under the radar until the Jets snatched him. Puhcheese was selected by the Lethbridge Lions in the third round, 26th overall of the Season 47 SMJHL Entry Draft and was traded to the Kelowna Knights at the trade deadline. Between Lethbridge and Kelowna, Tah scored four times and added four assists for eight points with a -1 plus/minus rating, 28 body checks, five blocked shots and ten penalty minutes during the regular season. In the playoffs with the Knights, he had three goals including a game-winner and two assists for five points, a -1 plus/minus rating and a body check. Tah Puhcheese will be a very nice piece for the Winnipeg Jets that has all the potential to develop into a big time SHL goal scorer.

Izem Abioye - Defense - St. Louis Scarecrows
Another prospect that flew under the radar was St. Louis Scarecrows defender, Izem Abioye who was also selected in the third round, with the 41st overall pick by the West Kendall Platoon. Abioye was taken in the fourth round of the Season 47 SMJHL Entry Draft with the 39th overall pick so he is used to being the underdog. Izem was a third pairing defenseman with St. Louis in Season 48 and with as little minutes as he received, has a decent season, posting seven assists, a +9 plus/minus rating, 27 body checks, 23 blocked shots and 34 penalty minutes. During the Scarecrows playoff run, he stepped up with four assists in thirteen games played with a +2 plus/minus rating, eleven body checks and four penalty minutes. The West Kendall Platoon will be very happy with this selection once Izem Abioye develops into a great two-way SHL defenseman but it could take some time.

Travis Bitties - Left Wing - Detroit Falcons
The first overall selection from the Season 47 SMJHL Entry Draft was not taken off the SHL draft board until the third round of the draft with the 44th overall selection when the New Orleans Specters took Travis Bitties, left winger from the Detroit Falcons who had 278 training hours as of draft night and is a first generation player. Bitties led all SMJHL rookies in points during the regular season with twelve goals and 20 assists for 32 points and a +7 plus/minus rating, 32 body checks, a blocked shot and eight penalty minutes. During the playoffs, Travis scored just one goal and three assists for four points, a +1 plus/minus rating and eleven body checks. There have been rumblings around the league that Travis Bitties may retire so this selection by the New Orleans Specters is a boom or bust type of selection that we will have to wait and find out about.

Well, that does it for this season. I hope you enjoyed this presentation as much as we enjoyed bringing it to you. See you all next season!
