St. Louis Scarecrows SMJHL draft and off-season wrap up
#1

With the SMJHL S48 entry draft completed, and the off-season coming to an end, we wanted to do a quick re-cap on the past draft and the changes in the St. Louis Scarecrow locker room.  S48 is just around the corner, so let’s get ready for what is sure to be another exciting season in St. Louis and in the SMJHL.

Draft re-cap

First round – Having led the SMJHL in points during the regular season, but failing to reach the Four Star Cup finals, the Crows held the 8th pick in this seasons draft.  With that pick the St. Louis Scarecrows selected defensemen Noah Brusky.  Noah is a defensive defenseman with some great passing ability, he has modelled his game after the great Nikolas Lindstrom, who is arguably one of the greatest defenders to play the game.  Not a bad player to try and emulate at all.  Noah will be a solid addition to this seasons St. Louis defensive core and will likely be asked to play some solid minutes during this season.

Second round – St. Louis did not have a selection in this round.

Third round – St. Louis did not have a selection is this round, and don’t let anyone fool you, we did not select the same player that Minnesota did in this seasons SHL draft, there is no player named Forfeit in the league, not yet…

Fourth round – St. Louis was back on the board in the 4th round, with two selections.  The first pick was Brennan Griggs.  Griggs was selected 32nd overall he is also a defender like Brusky.  Griggs is a American two-way defender who has a strong defensive game, a decent first pass and likes to play the body.  Where Brennan is looking to improve is on his scoring touch.

The second pick of the round, the 40th of the draft was Theodore Sober.  A two way forward who hails from Latvia, Theodore brings some size at 6’2, 210lbs to the Crows forward group.  The Latvian brings a well rounded skill set to the team and should be a nice late pick for the Crows.

Fifth round – St. Louis passed on their fifth round pick.

With the Crows seeing a some of their top performers from last season making the move up their SHL teams, including their captain in Michael Fox and their two alternate captains in Charlie Serpe and Gordie Boomhover.  That means that this new crop of rookies should get plenty of opportunities to show their stuff this season in the SMJHL, to hopefully impress some SHL teams as they await the S49 SHL draft at the completion of their rookie season.

The rookies won’t be alone though.  There is still plenty of talent on this St. Louis Scarecrows team, with returning players like Nicolaj Muller, looking to build on his last seasons breakout year.  2nd year forwards Mika Kandinsky and Barrett Blackwood will be looked upon to take on some more responsibility and ice time, and both players will undoubtedly be ready to step up.  On the backend, Bursky and Griggs will be joining a solid group, Basil Magnicotta who was named the Crows top defender last season will lead this group, with second year players Izem Abioye and Lyle Odelein III looking to make some gains on their rookie seasons.

There may be a couple of new FA signings to fill out the roster prior to the start of S49 in the SMJHL, but the team is looking good so far.  The Crows will be looking to once again have a strong showing.  The vibe is great, this team really does get along well.  Noah Brusky has been a great addition in the locker room since being drafted, Noah has fit right in with the Crows.  Fellow Crow defender Lyle Odelein III had this to say about his new teammate, “Noah seems like a great guy, he stopped by the locker room right after he was drafted.  He has already showed us that he wants to be here, it’s pretty impressive actually.  I remember my first few days after being drafted, it was kind of a blur, Noah is definitely handled it better than I did!  I can’t wait to hit the ice with him!”.  Lyle, who is just back from the WJC after winning the gold medal with Team Canada, seems very optimistic about this seasons crop of rookies, he is not alone on this.

So, get ready for the new look St. Louis Scarecrows hitting the ice near you, they are hungrier than ever to show the SMJHL what kind of team they are.  After losing to the Anaheim Outlaws (the eventual Four Star Cup winners) in game 7 of the conference finals last season, the Crows are looking to avenge that loss, and bring the Four Star Cup back to St. Louis, where it had spent the past 3 seasons.

The final roster is close to being set, the ice at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri is getting prepped, the players are finishing up their off season training and are itching to get back at it.  The SMJHL preseason gets underway soon, this will give the St. Louis GMs a chance to see what each player has brought to camp and allow them to make any adjustments that may be needed.  The regular season is just around the corner, and from what we can tell from being around this team is that they are going to be coming out of the gates hard.  The rookies aren’t the only ones who are looking to impress, this whole team is looking to prove that they are still one of the top teams in the league, they don’t intend to take any steps backwards, they know who they are, they are the St. Louis Scarecrows!!!
