S23: A Howler of a year

(This post was last modified: 08-25-2019, 06:02 PM by CptSquall.)

Its me again, back with another one of my walks down memory lane. You know I've always loved looking back at the history of a league and now that the SHL is nearing 50 seasons we are going to dig up all the interesting events. Looking at the old indexes is one thing, but not so easy with these older seasons of a bygone era. So here we go with S23, lets go!

**DISCLAIMER**: Unfortunatly this season's GDLs (Game Direct Links) were not included in the package! Sorry for the inconvenience and lack of grandeur. ON WITH THE SHOW!

**Theme Music Plays**

Western Conference:
1. Panthers 30-18-4 64 PTS GF: 146 GA: 136 +/-: +10
2. Blizzard 29-17-6 64 PTS GF: 152 GA: 135 +/-: +17
3. Renegades 29-19-4 62 PTS GF: 147 GA: 143 +/-: +4
4. Riot 25-21-6 56 PTS GF: 148 GA: 145 +/-: +3
-----------------------------------------------------------------
5. Jets 23-22-7 53 PTS GF: 152 GA 153 +/-: -1
6. Dragons 17-28-7 41 PTS GF: 126 GA: 158 +/-: -32

So first up Panthers had a strong season hitting 30 wins and 64 points. +10 is kind of low but really means that this team likely plays a more gritty, low scoring game. Brian Morley (HOF) lead the way with 50 points in 52 games, with Nicholas Pedersen's 46 and Jhonas Skarsgaard's 42 rounding out their top 3. Future Hall of Famer Jackson Weekes tended the goal, putting up a GAA of 2.46 and a .913 SV% in 46 games with 27 wins. This team should fare well, but it is a stacked Western Conference.

Tied for points with only one less win is Blizzard With a +17 +/- these guys seemed a little more dominant. Yousuf Scherbluk (HOF) lead the way with 53 points, Emils Vilmenietis had 49, both Theo Kane and Kyle Keenan managed 40 as well. The net was left to the legendary, hall of famer Jakub Aittokallio. Jakub's 2.50 GAA and .902 SV% weren't anything to be blown out of the water but, as we all know, the SHL can be a bit 80s on goaltending sometimes. Im sure this well oiled Blizzard team has the potential for a deep playoff run.

Finishing 3rd with a low, low score of 62 points (Im kidding) Renegades The old Texas 29 win season is in the books and, while their scoring and such was close with only a +/- of +4 its still a plus. Chris Partlow (HOF) and his 43 points lead the way for a Texas group that did it as a team. Ondrej Ravchitikov threw up 39 and Maxim Horvat offered 37 in support. THE (HOFer) Jordin FourFour was in net for 46 of their games netting 28 wins while posting a 2.61 GAA and a .895 SV% Not bad.

Skipping into the playoffs in the 4th and final spot is Riot Seattle managed 56 points, which is above .500 and 25 wins is not too shabby. A +/- of +3 is similar to Texas and they are looking good. Lead by David Winter and his 48 points these guys are team orientated too. Chuck Winnfield with 42 and Adam Kylrad's 41 offered strong support as well. Dustin Rose is back to being a thorn in the side of opposing shooters, his GAA of 2.59 and .900 SV% prove he can hang with the rest of the West.

Now for those who can expect to enjoy golfing and watching the better teams play. Missing by 3 points with 53 is Jets Winnipeg managed 23 wins and only had a +/- of -1 so not all bad. Vidrik Onoprienko (HOF) lead the fighter wing with 53 points and Terry Bullis offered a near point per game performance, cracking 50 points. Next was a big drop as Jonathan Kane only had 39 by comparison. Lauris Prikulis (HOF) was in goal with a GAA of 2.74 and a .903 SV% not bad for a team that seemed to be shelled a bit.

The BIG loser in the West was Dragons They only managed 41 points and were an awful -32. Roberts Birkavs was King of the Dragons, hording 51 points. A young Esa Anrikkanen managed 49 and Steven Jalopski was their lone 30 point man with 36. Poor Hunter Wong (HOF) had to be shelled hard this season as this was not a nice Sophomore run for the S22 All-Rookie. a 2.84 GAA and .900 SV% weren't all that bad by the standard of the rest of the west though. Hard to imagine that this team would not miss the playoffs again until S45.

Eastern Conference:
1. Steelhawks 29-18-5 63 PTS GF: 157 GA: 145 +/-: +12
2. Chiefs 29-20-3 61 PTS GF: 156 GA: 138 +/-: +18
3. Wolfpack 29-20-3 61 PTS GF: 135 GA: 125 +/-: +10
4. Rage 26-22-4 56 PTS GF: 125 GA: 124 +/-: +1
-------------------------------------------------------------
5. Stars 23-24-5 51 PTS GF: 125 GA: 148 +/-: -23
6. Platoon 23-24-5 51 PTS GF: 113 GA: 132 +/-: -19

Beasts of the East Steelhawks Flew high yet again with 63 points proving that no other team aside from Panthers could top 30 wins. Their +12 was not too bad and were sure to do well with Magnus Jakobsen's 57 points leading the group. Joe McKeil's 45 and Riko Muerto, along with Griffin Simons added 42 to make this offence potent. Hall of Fam goaltender Jakob Tanner took to the net and posted up a respectable 2.59 GAA and .904 SV%.

If not Hammy then Chiefs ? With 61 points and a godly +18, Minny looks to make a strong case in a rather even season. Niklas Stryker's 52 point performance was on top (What do you know another HOFer) but he wasn't the only 50 point man, Jarkko Kallestrom had 51 and Pedro Sarantez wasn't far off either at 48. Dymo Ranjan was in goal and posted a GAA of 2.51 while paired with a .902 SV% Certainly they can make a playoff push.

What about Wolfpack ? Yes once the Wolfpack were a good team kids. A record equal to the Chiefs here in S23 land  which meant 61 points, only a +10 but they only allowed 125 goals. Chris McZehrl only had 40 points but did well this season regardless, not bad for a Swan song end for the S8 rookie who would be named to the HOF by S25. Carter O'Callahan had 38 and Willie Weber offered 34. Jermaine Tennyson was the man behind the mask with his 2.12 GAA and .917 SV%, WOW.

How about the 4th place Rage ? 56 points earned them a playoff berth and a date with Hammy. +1 but they don't allow many goals, maybe some trouble scoring but lets ignore that. Daniel Merica (You know it, HOF) lead the defending champs with 45 points, Chuck Goody had 42 and Tommy Creller topped 40. C.J. James (HOF, seriously) was the man in net and didn't do to bad. A GAA of 2.35 and a .908 SV% are fine numbers indeed. These guys are still dangerous.

Stars Didn't make the cut yet again at only 51 points and a bad -23. Tom Sawyer lead them with 45 points which seems to be a common number to hit. Darian Scherbluk had 42 but both Kristian Eriksson and Chester Cunningham fell short at 39. Rookie Mark Harter posted up in goal, the future Hall of Famer went with a GAA of 2.79 and an .898 SV% leaving room to grow in spite of being a solid start.

Finally Platoon were at the bottom. Same record as the North Stars and only a -19. Ivo Willems (Yes HOF Ivo Willems) Had a low 42 points on a team that had a hard time scoring. Jed Lloren had 41 but Zallerras Szlerchek could only manage 35. Colin Schmidt (HOF) Had a more than fine 2.38 GAA and .907 SV% but it wasn't enough.

Playoff Matchups Round 1:

Panthers VS Riot
2.81 (7th) Goals For Average 2.85 (5th) Advantage: Riot
2.62 (5th) Goals Against Average 2.79 (9th) Advantage: Panthers
14.29% (8th) PowerPlay% 17.62% (4th) Advantage: Riot
83.58% (7th) PenaltyKill% 88.12% (2nd) Advantage: Riot
49.12% (8th) FaceOff% 52.83% (1st) Advantage: Riot

So, going into this I was not ready to expect this. But it isn't all that far fetched, as stated above the Riot had a tendency to play more team orientated while the Panthers were full of top end talent. Granted goals for are rather close and almost not an advantage. if this is a close, low scoring series it may be enough for Seattle. On the other hand they let in more on average too, making this one basically a dead heat. The Riot's special teams are where we see the strength, these guys can get it done both a man up and man down. If LA can stay out of the box they stand a good chance. One massive reason for this is because the Riot were number 1 in faceoffs. A team that can command possession of the puck should be a challenge to take on in any series. My prediction: Panthers in 7

Game 1: WEST COAST THUNDER! The Seattle Riot are down in SUNNY! Los Angeles, California for this game 1 confrontation between the visiting Riot and home town Panthers. A good, solid game of CLASSIC hockey was put on display, however it was the visitors who stole the show with a 4-2 win.

Game 2: With one win on the road can the Riot do it again? Surely the Panthers will be a tad embarrassed at letting the first one slip. More back and forth hockey in a fast but hard hitting game, but the weight on their shoulders, and pressure of needing a win on home ice was too much to bear. Seattle walked out of LA with both wins. 5-2 was your score.

Game 3: North to Seattle, Washington where the rain was sure to sour moral for the 0-2 LA Panthers who NEED a win here to show some life in this first round matchup. The goals would come a little more freely as the posturing and feeling out process had finished and game 3 would see the home team fall yet again. 5-3 for the Panthers.

Game 4: Here we go, momentum is swinging to LA as game 4 starts up, a chance to tie this series back up. For Seattle, they need to recollect themselves and put the Panthers on the ropes. Unfortunately a strong game for Jackson Weekes and the LA offence saw them take this one 4-2 and send things back south 2-2.

Game 5: The quintessential game, never in a series is there one that needs to be won without a team being eliminated with a loss. The winner here is in the driver's seat, the loser, left desperate. With the Home side on the edge of their seat, nervous due to all the road wins they waited.  When all was said and done, it would be the Riot who would win 3-1 and have LA playing for their lives.

Game 6: Jet setting, back in Seattle where the winner would very well be the only one to win at home. A chance to end it here and move on, for the Panthers, a must win, if they want to keep their season alive. Looks like they came to play as LA would score 5 and Jackson Weekes shuts the door, emphatically winning game 6 5-0 and sending this back down to The Staples center for game 7.

Game 7: This is it for them, it has gone the distance. No home side has won in this series yet, but it seams like the LA Panthers have figured out the Seattle Riot. But embarrassing losses and the threat of the end of the season can make anyone play for their lives. Old School hockey was on display as each team grinded and gutted out a tight 1-1 game. However someone had to get the winner. That someone wore the proud blues of the Seattle Riot, moving on in a close fought, 2-1 game.

Blizzard VS Renegades
2.92 (4th) Goals For Average 2.83 (6th) Advantage: Blizzard
2.60 (4th) Goals Against Average 2.75 (7th) Advantage: Blizzard
16.67% (5th) PowerPlay% 16.00% (6th) Advantage: Blizzard
86.78% (3rd) PenaltyKill% 78.39% (12th) Advantage: Blizzard
48.89% (9th) FaceOff% 52.38% (2nd) Advantage: Renegades

*sighs* I hate to say this but a Texas team who, on paper is outclassed in almost every category EXEPT when they don't have the puck? Is one that is scary. I've seen it before, a Renes team that has one major thing they excel at and it wins them games. Granted they aren't weak by any means but Edmonton scores more, allows less, out does them on special teams, but that faceoff percentage. If the Blizz cant get the puck, they cant score. That said if Texas finds themselves in penalty trouble they shouldn't expect FourFour to bail them and their dead last Penalty Kill out EVERY time. If Endmonton gets on them early and often I am confidant that Texas wont be able to keep up. My prediction: Blizzard in 6.

Game 1: Cold, cold Edmonton, Alberta is the site of game 1 between the Blizzard and Renegades. Each team looks to find its footing here as we open things up. Texas would come out firing from the hip and landing 4 while holding Edmonton to 1 to kick things off.

Game 2: Game 2 and the Renes have already stolen one on the road, can they do it again, or can the Blizz knot this up at 1 each? The games get tighter and the goals get harder to come by but its the Blizzard who put the routine in place, 3-1 and the series is 1-1.

Game 3: Down across the boarder to the DEEP south. Its game 3 in Houston, Texas and each team has a win, who will win? What transpires here is a game straight out of the 80s and that favors the high scoring Blizzard, Edmonton takes a wild one 6-5.

Game 4: The Renes need a win at home to keep things even and they sure could use it. A night where the offence over achieves and they don't get the W? This one stays close but Texas takes it 4-3 in the full 60. Series is tied 2-2.

Game 5: You know what it is by now, its in Edmonton. This one stays close but Texas breaks the 1-1 deadlock with a two-step and throws in an empty netter too to win 3-1. Series is in their favor at 3-2 coming back south.

Game 6: This one is a must win for the Canadian boys as the Texans have them on the back foot. Momentum is firmly on their side and things are in the Lone Star State. But Edmonton would play their game and open this one up 5-2.

Game 7: Another one goes the distance but this time the Blizz have the momentum, who will it be? 6-1 makes this one so not even close and with a score like that you KNOW that Edmonton took this one as they get rolling.

Steelhawks VS Rage
3.02 (1st) Goals For Average 2.40 (11th) Advantage: Steelhawks
2.79 (8th) Goals Against Average 2.38 (1st) Advantage: Rage
14.14% (9th) Powerplay% 13.20% (11th) Advantage: Steelhawks
80.87% (11th) PenaltyKill% 86.23% (4th) Advantage: Rage
49.98% (7th) Faceoff% 51.36% (3rd) Advantage: Rage

Ultimate Offence verses Ultimate Defense. Want a matchup that has spoiler all over it? Look no further. While Hamilton finished atop the East Manhattan is just a bit stronger. While the Steelhawks can score, nobody stops pucks from going in the net like the Rage. Special teams as a whole are not that strong but these New Yorkers have the advantage with a strong PK while facing a team with a low PP%. Faceoffs, which means possession, is FIRMLY in Manhattan's favor as well, meaning honestly this one, on paper seems hard to look the other way. If Hammy can score? Its their's, ANYTHING less, and its time to RAGE! My prediction: Rage in 7

Game 1: Things swing to the East as the Rage are in Hamilton, Ontario for their matchup against the Steelhawks. This thing would go the distance, but nobody to get more that 2 past the keepers as we have our first overtime of these playoffs. But something has to give and when one team has a disadvantage in these close, low scoring games you don't expect them to win. But that is exactly what the Home town Steelhawks do here, 3-2.

Game 2: Its game 2 here up north time for another close one but the Rage only needed 60 minutes to grab a 3-2 win of their own. Tying the series at 1s as the Steelhawks hit the road.

Game 3: The Big Apple. New York City is the place for game 3. This may be the home of the Rage but Jakob Tanner came to play, sealing this one up with a 3-0 win.

Game 4: Oh man, next one up and the Rage seem impotent here. Jakob Tanner posts another shutout as Hammy imposes their will with a 4-0 win and a 3-1 series lead heading back home.

Game 5: Its a must win for Manhattan's finest hockey players. A win for Hamilton seals this one up and they move on to face one of West Kendal or New England. With momentum on the side of the Steelhawks, and riding a long 120 minute shutout streak you knew the Rage had to at least get 1. But as the seconds tick down in the third and the score stays at 3-3 this one is up for grabs. But, as the emotions are at their height, with everything riding one this one last period, a Hero in the Red jerseys of the Manhattan Rage would make his name winning this one for them 4-3 in overtime.

Game 6: Is that a changing of the winds? Or is it one last desperate flash? Manhattan has yet to score a single goal at home in this series so far and this one is a must win to force game 7. The Steelhawks let game 5 slip, will they trip up again? It seems so as this one would go to the Rage 4-2 and even things up, heading to Hamilton for the 7th and deciding game.

Game 7: Now it is the Home town Steelhawks who are on the back foot, having lost their last 2 games and needing one or risk squandering a strong regular season. The DEFENDING champion Manhattan Rage are no easy opponent however. This one is an epic showdown. But this epic showdown would be rather one-sided with the Rage cruising to a 4-1 win and moving on with 3 straight wins.

Chiefs VS Wolfpack
3.00 (2nd) Goals For Average 2.60 (8th) Advantage: Chiefs
2.65 (6th) Goals Against Average 2.40 (2nd) Advantage: Wolfpack
20.30% (1st) Powerplay% 18.94% (3rd) Advantage: Chiefs
84.97% (6th) PenaltyKill% 88.41% (1st) Advantage: Wolfpack
50.09% (5th) Faceoff% 50.08% (6th) Advantage: NONE!

Offence verses Defence seems to be a theme in the East. Minny has a strong average of 3 goals a game but NEW is the best defensive team not named Manhattan. Both teams have strong, efficient powerplays, but its the wolfpack who has a good PK. With both teams within a tenth of a percent on the faceoff each one is well and truly up for grabs. All the Chiefs have to do is score and play solid defence. All the Wolfpack needs to do is stop them in their tracks. This one goes the distance. My prediction: Wolfpack in 7

Game 1: Minneapolis, Minnesota, the site of this series against the New England Wolfpack and the Minnesota Chiefs. I wont sugar coat this one, it starts out ugly for the home side. By the end of it NEW would take it 5-0.

Game 2: This first round makes me think playing at home is a poor choice. The Wolfpack would take a dog fight 3-1 but have a 2-0 series lead, heading back home.

Game 3: What do you know its a change of scenery and a change of fortune. But we would need overtime for this 4-4 game with the Chiefs mounting their defence and getting the win.

Game 4: Bunch of road warriors this year, gonna make it hard for someone to break the deadlock. This time Minny gets the empty netter to win 6-4 and take back home with them some HUGE momentum.

Game 5: The Chiefs are a tale of two teams. Back home they have 1 goal in 2 games. On the road however they have 11 in 2 games. Will that trend continue, with this a game 5 where the winner takes a 3-2 series lead? The answer is yes as an embarrassed New England Squad would kick out yet another 4-1 win en route to game 6.

Game 6: Back in New England for a game 6 in a series that has been all Road Warriors. Can the Wolfpack become the first team to buck this trend properly? things would remain close but ultimately the Chiefs would fall 3-2, giving it to NEW in 6.

Round 2:

Blizzard VS Riot

Fresh off of their down to the wire 2-1, game 7 win over Panthers Seattle is getting ready to take on the Edmonton Blizzard in the Western Conference Finals.  Blizzard has also moved on from a 7 game series which saw them impose their will on Renegades by way of a 6-1 win. The momentum of their highs and the stakes that are just as have brought us here.

Game 1: With the better record belonging to Blizzard , this series will start with Riot on the road. Last series they took both games 1 and 2 in LA. Here it seems they came to play as they cruised to a 4-0 win over Blizzard

Game 2: After being embarrassed in game 1, we will need to see if Blizzard are a contender or a pretender. It starts with a win here and, over the course of 60 minutes, a 4-1 win over Riot  will give Canadian fans a glimmer of hope.

Game 3: Across the border we go to Seattle. The team who wins here will be in the driver's seat and as such should give us good hockey. Riot is 0-3 at home in these playoffs and 5-1 on the road. Will that change here? Back and forth the teams go and a goal scoring race was had. Ultimately Blizzard would win 5-3 as changes will need to be made.

Game 4: The  Riot home woes have grown as they are 0-4 with another home game up next. A loss here puts Blizzard up 3 games to 1 and makes it that much harder on them to win. With this knowledge in hand it would be the Riot who would come out with a strong 4-1 win to not only tie the series, but sow the seeds of doubt in Blizzard

Game 5: Pivotal game 5 as always it sets the tone. Back in Canada for the Blizzard to try to shake things off. Riot would do well with a win here as banking on another surprise win at home is dangerous at best. The BEST hockey I have seen out of these two in this series would commence. Both netminders shrugging off shot after shot, neither allowing more than one. As always this is Riot game and they would have the last laugh with a 2-1 win. They lead the series 3 games to 2.

Game 6: Do or die for Blizzard as the 4th seed Riot could very well knock off another one of the West's top teams. This could have been amazing and for one side it was, but the curse of playing at home for Riot was too much as was the play of Blizzard goalie Jakub Aittokallio who blanked Riot 3-0 to force the deciding Game 7.

Game 7: This is what it takes. Leaving it all out on the ice to give yourself a chance to play for the Challenge Cup. I wont lie, this one was up for grabs till the end. But the roaring comeback by Blizzard to win 3-1 and move on against a tenacious Riot team has to be one heck of a feeling.

Wolfpack VS Rage

After stunning the Steelhawks in 7 exciting games, Rage are set to take on the 3rd ranked Wolfpack to battle it out for the chance to face the Blizzard for the Challenge Cup.

Game 1: Like Riot  Rage plays a tough, low scoring, defensive style that they are hoping stymies Wolfpack and their scorers. This rivalry is always set to be a war and we got ourselves over 60 minutes of action that would solve nothing and send us to OVERTIME. It was there that Wolfpack would strike, picking up the 3-2 win and starting off their homestand strong.

Game 2: Like game 1, we would not see a whole lot of scoring the second time around with both teams looking to keep that fighting edge. Down to the wire this one went and just like "Stomping" Tom Conners' hit The Hockey Song, id like to imagine Wolfpack trailed behind 1-0 before storming back to win 2-1 and take this series up to 2-0.

Game 3: Boy Rage needs a win here. Low scoring games make me feel like its so close. Being the underdog has me rooting for them too here at home in MSG. Before their thousands of fans they flame out. 1-0 after 60 minutes of grueling, tight checking hockey. Goalkeepers, C.J. James ( Rage ) and Jermaine Tennyson ( Wolfpack ) put on a show but Wolfpack leads this series 3 games to 0.

Game 4: A man I look up to once told me "Every team has a 50/50 shot of winning ANY given game, no matter how great or poor." Great and poor are great ways to describe how this series has gone for the Wolfpack and Rage respectively. But with two great goaltenders you never know and a repeat of game 3 shows us all it takes is one lucky goal. This time its C.J. putting a blanket on the Wolfpack offence for that sweet 1-0 shutout and literally carrying Rage to some sign of life here in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Game 5:  Rage is not out of the woods yet and will need to keep winning to keep their season alive. Wolfpack however better stifle this here and now before Rage gains too much momentum. Playing for their lives seems to help these guys as a 3-1 win is the prize for Rage and this series is 3 games to 2.

Game 6: Now its getting a little worrisome. Wolfpack needs more offence as you cannot rely on your goalie EVERY game. It shows here as well as Rage nabs another 3-1 win to send us to a game 7.

Game 7: Its frightening for Wolfpack now as  Rage has made this thing go all the way to the deciding game 7. THings are gonna be close but will the magic continue? Or will the wheels fall off the bus? Once the dust settled it was Wolfpack who would take home a 3-1 win and get to go to the big dance.

CHALLENGE CUP FINALS:

Blizzard vs Wolfpack

It took Blizzard 14 out of 14 games to get here, while it only took Wolfpack 13. NEITHER of these teams are terribly refreshed as they both just fought through 7 games of hell against teams that just wouldn't go away.

Game 1: WELCOME TO THE CHALLENGE CUP FINALS! the legends are made in these series'. back and forth, shot for shot. goal for goal. After 60 mins the teams are stuck at 3s. Overtime would give us a winner and that team was Blizzard getting out to a fast start.

Game 2: Another game in Edmonton and the Blizzard would love to take home another win and be up 2 games to 0. So Jakub Aittokallio ( Blizzard ) decided that's what was needed and shut the door for the Blizz to nab a 2-0 win.

Game 3: Now in New England for our 3rd instalment. Another hard fought war, another 2-1 win for Wolfpack Its a nice change and gives them life rather than having to face down a 3-0 series.

Game 4:  Wolfpack Absolutely CANNOT let Blizzard get another win or they are going to be in a world of hurt. They do not seem like the kind of team who can come back from it as you have to be pretty special. The goals doubled for both sides, but that means a 4-2 win for Wolfpack knotting this series up at 2 apiece.

Game 5: Another series tied at 2 games each going into game 5? Time to shine. This one was all  Wolfpack winning a dominant 5-1 as Jakub looks human at best.

Game 6: Now Wolfpack is in the driver's seat and Blizzard cannot afford another loss. But after Blizzard lets in that 4th goal it was all over. 4-2 was the score as Wolfpack took over the series way back in game 3. For Wolfpack a FANTASTIC challenge cup win.

Top 3 Scorers:
Aviad Ratzon ( Blizzard ) had 9 and a slew of others had 8 goals.
