S48 PGS Game 1: Anaheim Outlaws vs Colorado Raptors
#1

Outlaws Anaheim Outlaws vs Colorado Raptors Raptors
Game 1

Tonight, we open the season featuring two teams looking to make their mark and start this year off with a bang. Last season The Outlaws finished with a record of 25-18-7 in 5th place, while the Raptors ended up in 10th with a record 21-25-4. This offseason saw significant changes for both teams, so let's jump into the action and see if any of those decisions have made a difference.

1st Period

The intensity and determination from both sides was felt the moment the puck dropped. Both the Outlaws and the Raptors fought for every inch of the ice as shots were traded back and forth and Outlaws standout defenseman Corey Kennedy was down on the ice blocking practically every one of them. The intensity became so great that a fight erupted between Jake Peralta and Noah Tedla, sending them both to the penalty box for a five minute major, and with neither player emerging from the tussle as the clear winner both teams gained an added edge when it came to the next faceoff. It was not until 17:40 of the first period that the tension was finally broken as Ja’Aj Coitus-Wagg fired a shot over Tibuk Soonika’s shoulder, beating the Outlaws netminder clean, and just as the crowd erupted the period came to an end with the Outlaws getting a total of 8 shots on net, and the Raptors garnering 11 shots and a one goal lead.

2nd Period

The Outlaws came out hot for the start of the second period, unwilling to accept defeat they stormed back with a relentless attack that saw hits laid on the bodies of the Raptors and shots fired from the sticks of the Outlaws. It didn’t take nearly as long for the red light to shine as the second goal of the came at 7:20 and was scored by none other than Outlaws defenseman Jerry Mander, with a beautiful wrister from the point. The Raptors would not be swayed and while they could match the ferocity of the Outlaws they were unable to maintain possession of the puck and were at the mercy of their goalie Alexander Thorstrom, who kept them in the game and was the sole reason for stopping the surging Outlaws offensive attack. The Outlaws would finish the period with 9 shots on net while the Raptors could only muster 5. It was clear that the Outlaws had gained the edge over the 20 minute swing.

3rd period

Shaken but not stirred, the Raptors came at the Outlaws with a force that had not been seen over the previous two periods. Hot off his goal from the first period Ja'Aj Coitus-Wagg continued to impress fans with his speed and tenacity, but it was not enough against the strong defensive minded Outlaws. It was the Outlaws turn to shine and they worked hard to quell the comeback from Raptors, doing so with a standout performance from the first star, Tibuk Soonika, were it not for the Outlaws goalie the third period would have easily been had by the Raptors and the score much higher. The Raptors had an opportunity to score on every one of their 8 shots, while the Outlaws 4 shots were from the perimeter and never came close to once being in the slot. It was clear to the fans in the arena that with Tibuk Soonika in net, the Outlaws have a strong foundation that is hard to crack.

Overtime
Playing the hot hand it would Ja'Aj Coitus-Wagg that would start the period off right for the Raptors by winning a crucial faceoff and sending the play back towards the Outlaws end. However due to what the Raptors would call, “bad ice,” not a single shot they fired hit the net. Ja'Aj Coitus-Wagg was at one point seen arguing with officials, but we cannot confirm whether or not it had to do with the condition of the ice.

Shootout
The shootout went a total of four rounds with Outlaws forward Anthony Archer netting the winner, and Outlaws goalie earning his rightful spot as first star by standing on his head and stopping all of the Raptors attempts.

Final Score
Outlaws Outlaws 2 - 1 Raptors  Raptors

Tonight's 3 Stars
1 - Tibuk Soonika (ANA)
2 - Ja'Aj Coitus-Wagg (COL)

Tonights player of the game is...

[Image: Mask-Render-SAMPLE-Tibuk-Soonika-SIGNATURE.png]

STATS:

23 saves from 24 shots - (0.958)

Anaheim Outlaws' goaltender Tibuk Soonika's performance tonight, while somewhat guarded due to a protective-minded teammates and an opponent that struggled maintaining offensive pressure and testing the goaltender, really was about as good as it can get. He was athletic, he was sound in his save selection, he read the play well and he was almost always where he needed to be. You'll notice he tends to get a lot lower to see through traffic and this technique can be very effective. If there's one significant flaw in his game that we saw tonight, it's puckhandling - Tibuk Soonika held himself from starting any breakouts like some other goalies in the SMJHL can, but other than that he was phenominal behind the pipes tonight.

Tonight, Tibuk Soonika managed to save 23 from 24 shots taken by the Colorado Raptors. In addition to that he was like a wall during the shootout which was the main factor that decided who gets the W from tonights game.

Welcome, folks, to a blood-boiling broadcast of fisticuffs on ice in rocky Colorado! It's Friday Night Fight! And this one will be a doozy! Let's get right into the action.

We have two physical specimen tonigh here... Weighing at 190 lbs and 6 feet 3 inches tall, the Outlaw from Anaheim it's Nooooooooooooooah TEDLAAAAAA!

And weighing at 210 lbs, 6 feet 1 inch tall, the Raptor from Colorado it's JAAAAKE PERALTAAAAA!

The fight starts measured from both contestants here. We can see that Tedla and Peralta are both checking out the perimeter, not trying to do anything fancy right out of the gate. Just circling around... AND PERALTA SWINGS FIRST! Just to get nothing but air on that one. Nice little sidestep by Tedla.

Now we have Outlaws' Noah Tedla with a quick right counter after that Peralta miss. Tedla charges in but it doesn't really land as Tedla only gets a piece of some helmet with no damage.

Both fighters tonight keep charging in with no technique and clinching. Disappointing so far! None of the fighters have an upper hand tonight. Peralta tries to land a right hook but it only misses and Peralta can't connect. Tedla tries to swiftly counter with an uppercut but also misses! Peralta quickly realizes he has a chance here to take it all home! Peralta goes all-in with a haymaker from the right...

AND PERALTA ONLY GETS AIR TIME!

Both fighters drop to the ice and this one is a draw! None of the fighters tonight could take it home for some bragging rights. But this one was a good spectacle to the viewers at home and at the arena.

That's it, folks! Thanks for tuning in!

Game 1 of the season was clearly a match-up between two goaltenders: Anaheim Outlaws' Tibuk Soonika and Colorado Raptors' Alexander Thorstrom.

Anaheim's Tibuk Soonika is already a Top-3 goalie, with a save percentage of 0.901 (SV%) and goals against average with 2.39 (GAA) and 21 wins out of 40 games played in the regular season. Tibuk Soonika was a key piece in Anaheim's victorious S47 Four-Star Cup run.

Colorado's Alexander Thorstrom cannot boast same numbers as Anaheim's goalie. With 35 games played in the regular season and 10 wins, a save percentage of 0.875 (SV%) and goals against average of 3.28 (GAA) last season. Thorstrom was surely looking to improve upon these numbers in this season.

As this game was not the kind of offensive showing as one would hope from an opening night of the season. The game went into overtime and without any changes on the scoreboard the game went into a shoot-out. The opening night game was quickly dubbed "The Battle of the Goalies". Anaheim Outlaws' Tibuk Soonika won the battle, but it is safe to say that both goalies brought their "A" game. Also, both goalies benefitted from a slow offensive performance: Anaheim made 21 attempts on goal to Colorado 24 attempts on goal.

Soonika's best save came midway through the second period when he robbed Ja'Aj Coitus-Wagg after Bo Kane slipped a pass to him above the crease. Soonika committed to Bo Kane, then twisted back to his left just in time to glove Coitus-Wagg's backhand shot before it could cross the goal line.

Colorado Raptors goalie Alexander Thorstrom made a beautiful save in the first period when he gloved the puck out of the air coming off of a shot by Gunnar Petrov during the first period.

Both goalies let in one goal a-piece. Colorado Ja'Aj Coitus-Wagg opened the scoreboard in the first period with a follow-up shot after an earlier shot rebounded. Anaheim managed to tie the game in the 7th minute of the second period after a beautiful slapshot by Jerry Mander assisted by Max Rockatansky.

The regulation time ended 1-1 and the game rolled over to over-time during which neither team managed to gain the upper hand. The game went into shoot-outs. Anaheim's Tibuk Soonika managed to save all of Raptors' attempts.

The game was over after Outlaws' Anthony Archer scored a shoot-out goal over Alexander Thorstrom.

Both goalies were nominated as the stars of the night: Alexander Thorstrom - 3rd star and Tibuk Soonika - 1st star.

KEY STATS:

Tibuk Soonika (ANA), 23 saves from 24 shots - (0.958), W

Alexander Thorstrom (COL), 20 saves from 21 shots - (0.952)

Comment 1:Unsung Hero
While this game was a low scoring affair, only 2 goals, 1 apiece for Anaheim and Colorado, there were still unsung heroes. Notably, Jerry Mander, who scored the tying goal for the Outlaws in the second, went unsung. The three stars were Anaheim’s goalie Tibuk Soonika, and Colorado’s Ja’Aj Coitus-Wagg and Alexander Thorstrom. However, thanks to Jerry Mander’s goal, the Outlaws were able to push into overtime and eventually win the game in shootout. The game was ultimately won when Anaheim’s Anthony Archer put away a goal. Jerry Mander might not be gerrymandering at the moment, but what he is doing is way better, and that’s helping his team win games. (111 word count)

Battle of the Goalies

The SMJHL season has officially begun with the first game being played by the Colorado Raptors and the Anaheim Outlaws and fans were not disappointed. While the game was low scoring, the goalies put on a show for the fans. Tibuk Soonika of the Outlaws put up 23 saves on 24 shots for a save percentage of .958 while also saving 4 shootout attempts for the victory. Alexander Thorstrom also had an impressive game saving 20 of 21 shots for a save percentage of .952 but unfortunately was beaten by the 4th shooter in the shootout.

3 Stars

1st Star: Tibuk Soonika

Soonika had a very impressive game for the Outlaws season opener. He put up a .958 save percentage while going perfect 4/4 in the shootout for the victory. The Outlaws could not have asked for a better game from their starting goalie, Soonika.

2nd Star: Ja'Aj Coitus-Wagg

Coitus-Wagg opened the scoring for the SMJHL season late in the first period. He went 57% on the face-off dot tonight, had the game-high 5 shots, and played for 22:25 minutes and of course had the sole Raptors goal.

3rd Star: Alexander Thorstrom

Although Thorstrom was not able to collect the win tonight, he cannot be disappointed with his performance. He stopped 20 of 21 shots for a save percentage of .952. Hopefully next time the Raptors will be able to provide some goal support for Thorstrom.

Early season rivalry?

3 minutes and 6 seconds into the contest the tension flared and we saw the first fight of the SMJHL season start. Jake Peralta and Noah Tedla dropped the gloves and provided an entertaining fight for the fans. In the end, it was considered an even fight. With the fight happening so early in the game the fans got straight into the game and the building roared. It will be interesting to see in future contests between the Outlaws and the Raptors if Peralta and Tedla have a rivalry that will carry over. Only time will tell.

Game 1 Review: Anaheim Outlaws vs Colorado Raptors - Comment 1

On Monday, June 17th the Anaheim Outlaws squared off with the Colorado Raptors and wound up winning the game 2-1 in a close shootout win.  The Colorado Raptors opened up the scoring in the 1st period with a wicked snap shot goal from Ja'Aj Coitus-Wagg which was assisted by Bo Kane and Emeka Valentine-Okoli. In the 2nd period the Outlaws came back to tie it up with a huge blast from the point by Jerry Mander which was assisted by Max Rockatansky on the Power Play. Despite out shooting the Outlaws 24-21, the Raptors succumbed in the shootout by new draftee Anthony Archer who has shown great promise.

Game 1 Review: Anaheim Outlaws vs Colorado Raptors - Comment 2

The goalies of this June 17th show down both had amazing games. The Outlaws goalie, Tibuk Soonika had 23 saves on 24 shots and sported a .958 save percentage. Goalie Alexander Thorstrom of the Colorado Raptors saved 20 shots of the 21 he faced and despite the loss, held an impressive .952 save percentage. It was certainly a goalies battle and with little goal support from each side it meant each shot was that much more important and taxing on each of the goaltenders. Unfortunately the Outlaws had 5 Power Play opportunities and were able to capitalize on one of those man advantages which would be enough to send the game into OT. Both goalies would have preferred more goal support but will certainly come as the season goes on.

Game 1 Review: Anaheim Outlaws vs Colorado Raptors - Comment 3

Heat Siecker was the 11th overall pick in the most recent draft so every game has been important in his development. His game breaks down into a very average game overall where he had zero points on the night but had a +/- of 1 and had 2 penalty minutes to boot on a bullshit penalty call. Heat Siecker tried to pursue the refs but was unable to find any information on them. There names were unavailable and left so quickly after the game that he wasn't able to find out. Heat played had 15:12 of time on ice and got 1 shot on net while also playing 26 seconds on the penalty kill.

COMMENT ONE - Nerve-wracking Finish
In this game it was down to the wire, no team could finish the game off and it was a low scoring bout, each went 1-1 trading off goals in the first and the second, no goals in the third lead us to overtime. With a much heated and anticipated final, again, neither team could finish, finally bringing us to the shootout. This time, Anaheim got the better of Colorado which was the opposite result the last time these two teams met, however, not unexpected as the Outlaws played a great game. We will look forward to the next time these two teams clash to ensure that we see more great play from them. (114 words)

COMMENT TWO - Coitus-Wagg is a god-damn legend
Boy oh boy am I glad to be on this guys good side and not on the opposite end of the ice having to defend him every game. Wagg has been extremely impressive, every PbP I read of this guy he's always involved and part of the biggest plays to help the Raptors whether win or lose, because of this, he's stood out to me and is certainly a huge role-player and minute-eater for the team. With his impressive resume it wouldn't surprise me if this kid lead the league one day. I am excited to get to play with him the rest of the season that is for damn sure. (111 words)

COMMENT THREE - Shootout Revolving Door
Anaheim and Colorado battled here, right up until the final shot ,and it was Anaheim who got the last laugh in the shootout. The GM's felt it was best to only use one player each, a strategy that is bold but if it works, successful too. In this case, they used Thorstrom (Anaheim) and Soonika (Colorado) and both of them were just shooting blanks. Now I do not know how common this method is but you have to ask yourself what may have come if they just used some other people. Will see if this makes a difference moving forward or not... could be the difference maker in other games! (110 words)

Outlaws Goalie Steals A Win:
Anaheim goalie Tibuk Soonika started the season on fire has he stands on his head to earn his team the win in the first game of the season. Soonika only allowed one goal during regulation,as Ja'Aj Coitus - Wagg finds a loose rebound right in front of Soonika and slipped it by the netminder. After that Soonika went on to settle down and save 23 out of 24 shots. While he wasn't asked to make save during the first overtime period, he did save all 4 shootout attempts to give the game to Anaheim. His positioning, reflexes, and rebound control kept the Raptors frustrated all game. (108 words)

Penalties:
What stared as a fight between 3rd line Raptor Center Jake Peralta and top pair Outlaw Defenseman Noah Tedla 3 minutes into the game lead to a game mired with penalties that stopped momentum at different times during the game. While both teams were very wasteful on the man advantage but it was Anaheim that converted on one of their 5 power plays to tie the game up as Jerry Mander scored right off the face off. Colorado went 0 for 3 on their power play chances and didn't look to good on them. There are a few factors I contribute to both team's struggles; it was only the first game of the season and both teams could have been rusty, both teams have very good defenses and penalty kill units. (133 words)

Tonight's Three Stars:
First star of the game is Anaheim Outlaws goalie Tibuk Soonika. To me there is no other choice as the big time goal kept the Raptor's offense frustrated all night long including going 4 for 4 in the shootout. Soonika was the best player on the ice and was the key player in tonight's game.
Second star is Raptors second line center Ja'Aj Coitus - Wagg. Coitus - Wagg was the only player to get a puck behind Soonika all night. Wagg also was a disruptive presence on defense as he had 4 hits in the game and was also 12 out 21 in the face off circle.
The third and final star was Colorado goalie Alexander Thorstorm, as much praise as I gave Soonika, Thorstorm was right behind him. Thorstorm stopped 20 out of 21 shots in regulation and the one shot he had to face in overtime. The one difference between him and Soonika is that Thorstorm gave up one goal in the shootout which turned out to be the difference in the game. Thorstorm should be proud of the night he had even though he came away with the loss. (194 words)

The physicality of the game
Kicking off the season with a fight in the first period between Peralta (Raptors) and Tedla (Outlaws), both teams insisted on using their bodies to force play throughout the game. The Outlaws hit count was led by Gunnar Petrov scoring five hits (out of Anaheims 21) against Colorado with Ja'Aj Coitus-Wagg being his favorite target. Hell, Petrov hit Coitus-Wagg twice within twenty seconds in the 16th minute of the 3rd. That’s targeting. The Raptors, similarly, brought twenty hits to the table, with Kaako and Coitus-Wagg tying with four. For many casual fans, this is what the fans want to see, and both teams delivered.
Code:

Discipline within the ranks
Both teams suffered many penalties during the season opener. With six called penalties just during the first period, the tone was set for the game. In fact there were no fewer than three penalties each period during regulation play. With the least amount coming in the third, if it wasn’t for the lack of discipline, Colorado was likely to come away with the victory. Anaheim’s only score came about from a Power Play during the second period, tying the game till the shootout with Archer scoring in round four. It is a credit to Colorado’s special teams for withstanding four out of five penalty kills, but Colorado doesn’t need to put up 17 PIM.
Code:

Coitus-Wagg, a hero in another timeline
I want to talk about Coitus-Wagg. Earning the two star for the game, Coitus-Wagg was all over the ice. It has been mentioned how physical he played with his four hits on the game, but that doesn’t even talk about how often he got hit. Just by Petrov, he was hit three times. That’s a lot, and he kept getting back up. He had multiple deflections on the game showing good defensive awareness. He also had five shots, one of which led to the Raptor’s only score. I don’t find it a stretch to believe that without the penalties and the wall that was Soonika, Coitus-Wagg would have earned first star, no doubt.

Who Had the Puck More?
An Analysis of Puck Possession in Hockey Games

Today we are analysis the possessive traits of each team, and today those teams are the Colorado Raptors and the Anaheim outlaws. Right off the bat we can see that Colorado did shoot more than Anaheim, with 24 compared to 21 it was not quite dominant thought. The next stat, and in my opinion the most important when talking possession, is face-off wins. If your team is not winning face-offs it seriously hinders how much you can actually produce in the offensive zone because you don't have the puck. With 47 to 35 it's easy to see that Colorado dominated in this regard.

Overall:
After analysising these two stats I would say that possession in this game goes to Colorado, which is sad because they dominated possession only to lose in OT.

Soonika Shines

The opening game of the season, Colorado and Anaheim. In what would become a regular occurance this season, Anaheim Outlaws goalie Tibuk Soonika decided he didn't want to give his opponents a chance. Despite facing 11 shots in the first period, he only gave up one goal. Facing another 13 shots over the next two periods, he kept Colorado off the scoreboard and would eventually force the shootout. He carried the Outlaws in this game, and rightfully deserved the first star of the game. When asked about his performance, he said he doesn't care about stars, he's here for Cups.

(100 words)

Coitus-Wagg Scores

The lone goal of the game came from Ja'Aj Coitus-Wagg for Colorado. Trying to put the Raptors on his back and pull out the win, Coitus-Wagg had a team leading 5 shots and was tied with Kaako in hits, amassing 4 each. Coitus-Wagg pulled in the second star, but it wasn't enough to stop the reigning champion Outlaws from picking up the win in the first game of the season. Hopefully the Raptors can pull it together and rally from this defeat. Coitus-Wagg seems confident, saying one game doesn't make the season, he's just glad to have the first goal off his mind and can carry on from here.

Mander Manders

The unsung hero of the game is none other than Anaheim legend Jerry Mander. Mander picked up his first goal of the season, while delivering one hit and four shots. Coming into the season it was widely accepted that Mander would be retiring from hockey after this season to pursue his career in disc golf. Fresh off a Cup victory, he hopes to pick up a goal per game in his final season in the world of hockey. He's got a stacked team around him, and has the opportunity to pull it off. When asked if he'd stick around if his team picked up a second Cup, he just smirked and said only time will tell.
