Whalers  Vancouver Whalers vs. Montreal Militia Militia

After a 1-3 drubbing at the hands of the Vancouver Whalers the first time, Montreal Militia fans are looking for a better effort and outcome in the rematch at home arena.

Vancouver Whalers are coming off of a heart-breaking 4-6 loss to the Lethbridge Lions on the road and surely will want to improve their win record and position in the standings.

Montreal Militia are currently third and one spot above the fourth-place Whalers in the standings, so this will be a great showing from two quality teams.

First period:

First period belonged to no one. The game got off to a blazing start with the Whalers pulling away and getting one of the fastest goals this season. Just after 21 seconds Theo Morgan scores a fine snapshot after a beautiful team effort and some crisp passing from Jax Duggan and Kaspers Claude.

Prior to the ten-minute mark and after getting some good chances Montreal Militia managed to tie the score. Padraig Sarantez retrieved the rebound after his blocked shot and passed it to an unguarded Ravyn Tedisko who had just enough time to aim his shot. He wound up the stick and released a vicious slapshot. Vancouvers’ Casimir Stevens had no chance of getting hold of that one.

Thankfully for Vancouver fans, the Whalers decided that they were going to respond in an equally strong fashion and managed to control the puck for most of the time. Militia, for their part, had to withstand a lot of Whalers pressure until they could properly counter on rapid breakouts. After winning a face-off near the Militia net, Vancouver caught the poor out-of-position Militia defense unprepared. Aaron Wilson won the face-off versus Kristoffer Svensson, pass the puck across the net to Theo Morgan who just had to tap the puck in. Vancouver is up by one.

The two teams continued to exchange chances, but nothing would come of it. But three minutes before the period ended Montreal once again managed to tie up the score. Whalers’ Jon Forty-One lousy pass was intercepted by Oliver Klozoff who instantly moves the puck to Conor Tanner. Conor Tanner shifts the puck back to Oliver Klozoff in the neutral zone. Oliver Klozoff quickly moves the puck up the ice, passes it to Herry Morris IV near the net, Morris IV dangles with the puck and releases a quick wrist shot and it goes right by Stevens into the back of the net. The score is equal once again.

All in all, it was a near perfect period for the fans at the arena or near a television. There were plenty of action with 4 goals scored and no penalties.

Second period:

This is where things turned to boring and while there were some close calls, no one scored. Both teams had power-play opportunities as Whalers Joe Ackroyd was sent into the penalty box for tripping and Militia Svensson and Morris IV were penalized for roughing and high sticking respectively. None of the teams capitalized on penalties and both teams went into the third period tied at 2 – 2.

Third period:

In the third period, all credit to Montreal Militia, who dominated the Whalers at every turn. The adjustments made in the second intermission brought a totally different face from the Militia squad for the remainder of the game. The Whalers had a decent first 8 minutes of the period, but for a team looking to take momentum and force the Militia on their heels, they did not really accomplish that. The momentum swung to the Militia. After a kerfuffle near the Whalers net, Herry Morris IV lined up a shot which was stopped by Vancouver’s Casimir Stevens.  Stevens did not manage to hold on to the puck and it rebounded right back to Herry Morris IV and he did not hesitate to try his luck again and the puck went into the back of the net after Stevens could not compose himself after the rebound.

Vancouver Whalers 2 – 3 Montreal Militia Goal
[Image: giphy.gif]

The Whalers get a rare breakdown in the Militia defense in the middle of the third period. Kaspars Claude leads a 3-on-1 rush. He has Sami Rieder behind him and Joe Ackroyd on to the right. Claude delays, passes it to Ackroyd who makes a go for a shot but Aleksi O’Koivu-Volkova makes a brilliant save without giving up a rebound. Tough one for the Whalers. 4 minutes left in the game and Kaspars Claude can’t disrupt the pass to Militia’s Ravyn Tedisko who takes advantage of all the space he’s afforded and snaps home an insurance goal to make it 4-2.

Vancouver Whalers 2 – 4 Montreal Militia Goal
[Image: giphy.gif]

Dirk Von Grimmelshausen hooks Jon Forty-One and it draws power play with 2 minutes left to play but the Whalers accomplish nothing with it and the games ends in Montreal Militia winning this one after taking the command in the third period. Militia fans go home with a smile on their faces after tying the season series against Vancouver victory a side.

Comment 1: Good things come in twos
This game featured three seperate goal scorers, each of whom were able to light the lamp two times in this contest. On the losing end, we saw Theo Morgan continue his dominant goal scoring season by scoring the only two goals for the Whalers, both of which came in the first period. He led the team easily in shots with 6, double the amount of shots taken by the next closest shooter on the team. On the winning side, both Henry Morris IV and Ravyn Tedisko potted two goals. They each scored a goal in the first period, tying the game each time. Their goals in the third period gave the Militia the lead and sealed the victory.

Comment 2: Montreal surviving the second period
The big momentum swing in this game may have came in the locker room during the second intermission, after Montreal was able to weather the storm and survive a thrashing in the second period without falling behind on the scoreboard. The Whalers were able to out-shoot the Militia by a total of 14 to 3, but an impressive performance in net by Aleksi O'Koivu-Volkova kept the score deadlocked at 2 goals a piece. Montreal was unable to get anything going on the offensive end of the ice during the period and constantly found themselves defending in their own end. Their resilience in that second period most likely led to a stern pep-talk in the locker room and helped to propel them to victory in the final frame.

Comment 3: Power play? More like powerless play
Both teams found themselves on the power play three times in the contest, and both teams found themselves coming away with zero goals with the man advantage. Montreal went on the power play once in the second period and came away without a single shot. They went on the power play twice in the third period and were able to get a combined three shots on goal during the two chances, but also allowed two short-handed shots against. Vancouver was able to muster up a bit more pressure during their power play chances, with a total of eight shots while on the man advantage, but they were stonewalled by a hot O'Koivu-Volkova as he refused to let the Whalers back into the game.

Comment 1: Ravyn Tedisko

Ravyn Tedisko was named the first star of the game tonight for the Montreal Militia and rightfully so. Tedisko came into the game tonight looking to make an impact with his goal scoring expertise and did just that for Montreal. Ravyn tied the game early to keep the Militia in the game and ended up tallying another late in the 3rd period to provide the “insurance goal” to secure the win for the Montreal Militia. Ravyn also contributed by putting his body on the line, laying out a hit and blocked a shot later in the game as well. The Montreal Militia needed Ravyn to perform tonight and he did just that.

Comment 2: Turning Point

For what was such a tightly contested game with the Montreal Militia taking on the Vancouver Whalers in the SMJHL, the game had to have some sort of turning point which led to the Militia taking it all. And it had exactly that. After the Whalers’ Theo Morgan scored early in the 1st period, the Militia knew they had to respond, and respond quick, or this game would be out of their hands quickly. Henry Morris IV took it into his own hands and potted one just 2 minutes later for his 3rd goal of the season to even up the game at 2 a piece. Without that goal the Militia may have fallen into a deep hole and unable to recover and thus it’s listed as our Turning Point of the night.

Comment 3: Defence was key

Although the game had a total of 6 goals scored by both sides, ultimately superior defensive play by the Montreal Militia led to them claiming victory. They allowed 2 goals early in the first period and after that completely shut down the Vancouver Whalers’ offence. Even though they surrendered 3 different power plays to the Whalers over the course of the game, they bent but didn’t break and held on to not allow a single goal while shorthanded. They completely surrounded the Whalers defensively and allowed just 4 shots from the Vancouver offence in the entire 3rd period and that was a huge key in the Montreal Militia taking this game.

My 3 stars of the game

1. Aleksi O'Koivu-Volkova, .917sv%, saw a lot of rubber and played a strong game to backstop the milita to a victory, he might be my MVP for this SMJHL season

2.Herry Morris IV 3, played an efficient offensive game, that saw him score 2 goals in this game, 5 shots, he pushed the play and was a key member of this militia's offense

3.Theo Morgan. You gotta respect theo's game today, as he was the only whaler to show up as he had 6 shots on net and scored the only 2 goals, he showed us why is one of the best snipers in the SMJHL.

The Battle for Momentum:

Until the last period of the game when Montreal scored two goals in less then six minutes apart to ice the game both teams were fighting back and forth for momentum. Vancouver struck first just 21 seconds into the game, but Montreal responded 8 minutes later on a shot from Rayvn Tedisko that found it;s way to the back of the net. The Whalers would once again take the lead at 14:45 with another goal from Theo Morgan. Which was followed by another Militia goal to tie it at 2 all with less then two minutes left to play in the first period.  It stayed 2-2 until the third period when Montreal scored 2 unanswered to take the game 4-2. (126 words)

Similar Team Stats:

Besides the final score both teams had fairly similar team stats. Both teams were 0 for 3 on the Power Play, the Whalers had two more shots and two more blocked shots. While the shot totals were pretty balanced the first two period totals were not, the Militia had 13 compared the Whalers 6 in the first, but the Whalers had 14 while the Militia only had 3 in the second. Montreal had the better face off record winning 45 compared to Vancouver's 36, but the Whalers had the edge on hits 19 to 11. Both sides power play units were largely ineffective as they couldn't get much going even though both teams had three chances each. (104 words)

Three Stars:

First star of the game is Montreal second line Right Winger Rayvn Tedisko, Tedisko had two goals for Montreal, their first and their last. Vancouver had a really rough time keeping track of the winger all night as he also had four shots on net. The second star of the game also comes from Montreal in form of top line Right Winger Henry Morris IV. Morris IV scored Montreal's second goal and the game winning third goal. It must have been something the Militia coaches saw on tape because their top two right wingers absolutely dominated the Whaler defense. The third star is guess what another Right Winger, however this one is top line Whaler Theo Morgan. Morgan who scored both goals for the Whalers had a night to remember as he also had 6 shots on net, and really drove the Whaler offense. (156 words)

Comment 1: 3 stars of the game

The third star for tonight, from the Vancouver Whalers, is Theo Morgan. Theo Morgan finishes the night with two goals on 6 shots, a 33% shooting average. Both goals came early in the game, during the first period. He is now at five goals for the season. The second star of the night was Henry Morris IV of Montreal Militia who also finished with goals, however had more a defensive presence with a blocked shot and a hit. And tonight's first, from the Montreal Militia, Ravyn Tedesko with 2 goals and over five minutes of special team time, as well as a blocked shot and a hit.

Comment 2: Unsung hero of the game

Tonight's unsung hero of the game, from the Montreal Militia was Oliver Klozoff. Klozoff  was second in ice time with almost 23 minutes. Klozoff finished with two assists to get the Militia going in the first period. Klozoff is now at four assists for the season. He, like the other three stars, ended with one shot blocked on Cullen Gray and one big hit on Jon Forty-one. Klozoff registered just over 3 minutes on the power play tonight and killed off almost two whole penalties with almost three minutes of ice time during that special team's shift.

Comment 3: Goalie breakdown
Casimir Stevens did not have a good night for the Vancouver Whalers. He faced 22 shots and stopped 18 of them as the Militia went on to win 4-2. That put a .818 sv% on his record, and brought his season record to 4-2-0, which in a post game interview mentioned was his intention. Aleksi O'Koivu Volkova had solid night for the Militia to win as he stops 22 of 24 shots. Despite his team being put under pressure after the first with three penalites, he stood tall and boosted the teams to a 100% PK tonight. This was his third win of the season.

The good:

Aleski O'Koivo-Volkova saving 22 of 24 shots faced for the decisive 4-2 victory was key. Most of all, the importance of the second period cannot be understated as O'Koivu faced 14 shots and saved them all, keeping the game tied at two and allowing momentum to shift back in favour of the Militia, without his efforts in the second period Montreal could have very easily drowned in shots and goals allowed, but thankfully they had their long time goaltender to keep the ship a float when everything else seemed to be pointing towards them sinking and not thriving. Thank goodness for Aleksi.

The bad:

The Vancouver Whalers shot totals and inability to capitalize on pressure.

When you pepper a goalie with 14 shots in a period you better hope to God you make them count, and unfortunately for the Vancouver Whalers it is not what happened in this game. They got outshot in the first but come out of it with a tied game, and then went on to absolutely shower the Militia with shots on goal and did not make a single one count, and that is how you lose games, you do not capitalize and you lose games, that is just a matter of fact.

The Ugly:

The pairing of Andy Kerr and Egor Kucherov who both flashed spurts of greatness in this game, both with beautiful negative two ratings, the worst on the team.

The season totals for these guys were not that impressive either, and they need to just perform better if the Vancouver Whalers want to continue advancing in the playoffs, a third pairing cannot and should not ever be responsible for a negative two rating and when your team loses by two goals and only two people have a negative rating it is hard to point the blame anywhere but forward if you catch my drift.
