Falcons Detroit Falcons vs Montreal Militia Militia

Final Score - Militia 3, Falcons 2 (ot)

A game that no one has been waiting for, it far surpassed all expectations from anyone outside of these two organizations!

Period 1

Right off the puck drop, Montreal shows that might have been a fluke that they made it to the finals. They start the game with a quick icing, choosing to play in their defensive zone just 15 seconds into the opening frame. Luckily, Aleksi O'Koivu-Volkova actually showed up to play and stops a shot just 4 seconds after the faceoff. After some sloppy play by both teams, Khabib Nurmagomedov opens up the scoring by picking up his second goal of the season by one-timing a pass from Satoshi Zizagooney! That's one that O'Koivu-Volkova wishes he could have back. The Falcons turn the heat up and keep pressure on Montreal, but a quick breakaway by the Militia managed to put an end to that. Heikki Jaakola picks up his third of the season by getting a quick redirect off a beauty of a shot by Griffith Cadwalader, who picks up his third helper of the season. Oliver Klozoff gets the secondary assist, which is his eighth of the season. Montreal has tied it up at 1! Refusing to stay down, Skao Anazibf puts the Falcons up 2 to 1 just after the power play ends.

End of period - Detroit 2, Montreal 1. Shots - 10 to 7 for Detroit.

Period 2

The period of the long change. It really showed in this period. Lots of back and forth, but not much to show for it. Montreal picks up three minor penalties, Detroit picks up two. Not much to talk about here. The highlight of the period was a massive hit by Lunga Gumba. Kristoffer Svensson won a faceoff in the Montreal zone against Gumba, and Gumba promptly crosschecked him in the face knocking him off the puck. No penalty was assessed on the play.

End of period - Detroit 2, Montreal 1. Shots in period - 7 to 3 for Detroit.

Period 3

As with the second period, lots of back and forth here. Montreal has really stepped it up on the forecheck and the backcheck this period. Apparently the speech between periods really got through to them. They pepper the goalie with shots. Nothing is getting through, and it looks like Detroit has this locked down. Wibbly McButternutz takes a terrible penalty with just over 5 minutes to go in the game. Their penalty kill had been flawless up to this point. With just under a minute to go on the power play, Gavin Hughes dishes the puck over to Hugh Jazz! Jazz connects the tap pass Padraig Sarantez! Sarantez roofs it! Powerplay goal! It's tied at 2! Both teams get their chances for the rest of regulation, but no one cashes in. We're headed for overtime!

Score - Detroit 2, Montreal 2. Shots this period - Detroit 6, Montreal 14

Overtime

This is it sports fans! You have one shot, one opportunity, mom's spaghetti! Detroit shoots! Blocked! Montreal shoots! Rebound! Montreal tries to roof it and is denied! Montreal again! No! Detroit rushes towards O'Koivu-Volkova and blasts it! Off the glass! Montreal whiffs on the clear, Sarantez collects it and shoots it five hole, putting it past O'Koivu-Volkova! Game over!

Final Score - Detroit 2, Montreal 3!

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Today's player of the game is going to be awarded to Padraig Sarantez and for good reason. The Montreal Militia were down 2-1 late into the third but the Militia got a powerplay opportunity and Sarantez ensured to capitalize on the opportunity and beat Emiko Spector to tie the game and to force overtime. He was not done here though as only 3:14 into the overtime period Sarantez beat Spector again to finish the game 3-2 for the Militia. The clutch performance by Sarantez has landed him as the player of the game.

What went wrong?

This match-up was a nail bitter and was close throughout the entire game. Both teams had similar shots, same powerplay opportunities, and overall played a very even game. So what went wrong for the Detroit Falcons and why was Montreal able to pull ahead to get the win and 2 points? It simply comes down to executing your powerplay opportunities. As I mentioned earlier, both teams had the same powerplay opportunities at 4 a piece. The difference between the score was 1 single goal. Guess what? The Militia capitalized on 1 poweplay compared to the 0 for the Falcons. That goal ends up being the difference maker in this tight game.

Battle of the Goalies

This matchup of the Falcons vs Militia saw an excellent battle between two goalies. Both Spector and O'Koivu-Volkova were lights out the entire game. Spector faced a total of 27 shots and O'Koivu-Volkova faced 26. Spector was holding things down all game with only one goal against until late in the third when the Militia capitalized on a powerplay opportunity. Unfortunately, the Militia would also score in overtime which diminished the statistical outlook of Spectors performance to make it look mediocre when infact he had a great game. For O'Koivu-Volkova, he let in two goals in the first period but then shut the door the rest of the game en route to the victory. Spector finished with a save percentage of .889 while O'Koivu-Volkova finished with a percentage of .923.

Nour’s 3 focuses

Comment 1: Sacrificing the Body
While Detroit did drop this game and have an abysmal showing on the powerplay, it wasn’t all bad thankfully! Thankfully Detroit boasts a team of very dedicated, “whatever it takes” type players, both vet and rookie alike. This was evident especially in their blocked shot numbers, with Detroit blocking 20 shots to Montreal’s 6. Its hard to even highlight since so many players came up so big in this department, but the obvious standouts are defensive centre Zvejnieks, number one defenseman Salo, as well as typically offensively players McButternutz and Bitties. Who knows how this game would have gone without the defensive help of all of these players! (108 words)

Comment 2: Powerplay Troubles
In a super tight game that was just within the Falcons grasp, its the powerplay that really buried them from putting this away. Despite playing a Montreal team brimming with young developing players, the star studded squad of Detroit vets couldn’t find a way to get anything going with the man advantage. On 4 attempts they squandered every chance, a truly disappointing showing for this group that has the fire power to do so much more. Its not unreasonable to think Detroit wins this game in regulation if they got something going here, even just a little bit. They’re going to have to see better special teams production from guys like Knutsen Jr and Salo if they want to stop dropping big games like this. (125 words)

Comment 3: Offensive Defensemen
People will argue back and forth about the evaluation of defensemen, and many purists will argue that a defenseman who can get it done offensively is not as valuable as one who can simply lighten the load on their goalie. There are many stances here and its tough to pick a side, but as they say, the best defense is a good offence, and that proved true for Montreal this game. Padraig Sarantez’ 2 goals in this game were crucial to give Montreal what they needed to pull ahead, and he was the real difference maker here. Not only did he come up big, but his stellar offensive night bailed out a Montreal team that had half of its roster finish as a minus on the score sheet. (128 Words)
