LionsLionsLions vs  KnightsKnightsKnights

It’s the second week of the season and SMJHL teams are still jockeying for position in the standings, in hopes of placing themselves in the best possible position for playoff seeding. Today’s post game show recap forces on the contest played between the Knights and the Lions. It wasn’t the most offensively explosive game ever played, but it nonetheless turned out to be a pretty exciting game for both teams involved, and of course, the fans of the SMJHL.

First Period
The first period of the game would end up producing the most goals scored of all periods in the game. The first half of the period remained scoreless, but that all changed when the Lions were awarded a power play and took the early 1-0 lead thanks to Liam Hutchinson scoring his 4th goal of the season, which came off of a reflected shot by Joln DuBolk, who earned the primary assists and this sixth overall assist of the season. The secondary assist was awarded to Monkey D. Luffy, who earned his 4th assist of the season. However, such a lead wouldn’t last long as around two minutes and forty-five seconds later, the Knights managed to tie the game at 1-1, thanks to Jack Icicle’s 2nd goal of the season, which came off of his own face-off win. The primary assist was granted to Lions rookie Prince Devitt, his second of the season, while the secondary assist was awarded to Jocke Nystrom, who earned his second assist of the season, as well. The Knights weren’t done this period, however, as they managed to take the lead after being down 1-0 early on, and scored their 2nd goal of the period with less than a minute and twenty seconds remaining, thanks to the stick of Vadim Malichov, who scored his fourth goal of the season off an impressive slap-shot from the circle on a Knight’s power play. The primary assist was earned by Piotr Horvat, who earned his fourth assist of the season, while David Vent earned his seventh assist on the season by earning the secondary assist on the goal. The 2-1 lead earned by the Knights would be the final score of the first period.

Second Period
Not much action really occurred in the 2nd period after such a dynamic initial period of the game, Maybe the players just needed to rest up a bit or the puck luck didn’t work in any team’s way, but the score entering the period was 2-1, and that’s exactly how it remained at the end of the period, and entering the third and final period of the game.

Third Period
The last period actually started off with a quick and important bang, as the Lions managed to tie the game at 2-2 only thirty-four seconds into the period, thanks to Jules L’Eclair’s 5th goal of the season, after his initial shot was blocked. The awesome game tying effort was assisted primarily and only by Joln DuBolk, who earned his seventh assist of the season (and his second assist of the game). However, the game remaining tied didn’t last long as the Knights would respond around three minutes later and would re-take a 3-2 lead, thanks to Gunnar Soderberg scoring his fifth goal of the season after a glorious saucer pass from Simon LeBlanc, who earned his fourth assist of the season. Ultimately, the game would remain at a 3-2 score through the duration of the third period and would grant the Knights a much needed and close victory over the Lions.

COMMENT 1: In what was a very close game statistically, the biggest indicator of success, or failure in this case, is the ability or inability to capitalize on power play opportunities. Both teams scored a single goal on the power play, but it was the Lethbridge who were most affected by the failure to score on the power play, scoring once on five attempts. While it is still relatively early in the season, if Lethbridge hopes to earn a bye in the playoffs they must find a way to take advantage of the opportunities afforded to them and improve their power play.    (words = 100)

COMMENT 2: One of the most interesting stats in this game was the ability of the Kelowna Knights defensive pairings to generate offense. This clearly had a huge impact on such a tight game. Of the top six defensemen on the Knights squad, four registered a point. Contrast that to Lethbridge in which one one of their top six defensemen registered a point (albeit, it was two points and he was the First Star of the game). All that said, it is clear that the more capable a defenseman is at generating offense, the better the team will likely perform. The nuance to that, however, is having too offensive of a defensive pairing will lead to giving up opposing rush chances and could doom the team.    (words = 124)

COMMENT 3: The most surprising statistical analysis from this game is the minutes played by the first, second and third lines. For the Lethbridge Lions, the first and third line forwards averaged 15 minutes of playing time, while the second line averaged just under 14 minutes. The Kelowna Knights, however, had their first three lines average 12 minutes or less. With these types of number you would expect that Lethbridge would dominate offensively, but here is the rub with that hypothesis. By evening out the playing time amongst the forwards for four lines instead of three (the fourth line for the Knights averaged 9 minutes to the Lions 11 seconds for fourth-liners), it allows the forwards to retain some of their endurance for later in the game.  This proved critical for Kelowna because once they were able to secure the lead in the first period, they were able to relatively coast and had the legs available to score the game-winning goal early in the third period.    (words = 164)

Goaltenders:
Both goalies started the game making routine saves but simmered at the halfway point, we saw the Lions go up by 1, scoring on the power play and goals 5 minutes apart by the Knights to get the lead, both goalies ending the period with goals they would want back but still averaging above 90%. The second period is when Harry Carpet started to shine, standing on his head for 10 straight saves while Weekes made only 3. In the third period we saw a couple of goals but outstanding performances from both goaltenders, Carpet ended up only making 1 save until his streak ended but stayed solid the rest of the way and added another 13 saves, ending the night with a .909 save percentage. Weekes also let a goal in early and on the 1st shot of the period but kept his composure intimidated the Lethbridge line up making flashy glove saves the rest of the game for the win. (167 words)

Defensive Three Stars:
First Star, DuBolk was the clear front runner out of any player that played and added 6 hits to his season totals along with a blocked shot that took him out of the game but that didn't stop him, his plus minus even in his teams defeat. Second Star, Fudge helped his team with 3 hits and 2 blocked shots, all of his hits and one of his blocks came in the first period and the shot block lead to a fast break goal for the tie. Third Star, Baur threw his body on the ice all game had the most blocked shots, blocking a shot every period. (107 words)

Faceoffs:
In a night that had a lack of shots we saw a lot of draws, both teams took a total of 95 puck drops and the players who took the most had some of the best nights of their careers while others we saw need to go back to the drawing board and get more practice, the Lions center Eykhil was a blazing 56%, winning 18 on 32 attempts but the Knights Novotny was even better at 58%. Luffy was the worst at the dot and struggled all night for Lethbridge, only winning 39% on 23 challenges and we saw Scherbak end the night with a low 41%. (114 words)
