PGS S48 G67: Kelowna Knights vs Halifax Raiders

S48 G67:  Knights Kelowna Knights 3 - 4 Halifax Raiders  raiders

It was a game of chances last night, as the Kelowna Knights played host to our Halifax Raiders. Luckily, our Raiders were able to take advantage of those chances, mostly from unlikely places, and escape Prospera Place with a hard-fought 4-3 win to even out their record to .500 as we find ourselves a little over a quarter of the way through S48. With goals coming from unlikely places and solid goaltending, the Raiders held off a furious rally late in the game to come away with the one goal victory. If this game is any indication of the future, it is going to be a tough slog for Halifax through the rest of the season unless our boys can continue to take advantage of opposition mistakes while limiting their own and continue to have players step up against resilient foes.

The first period saw both teams playing back and forth hockey through the first ten minutes before the scoring finally opened up.  Our Raiders capitalized first from an unlikely source to start the day’s scoring. Thanks to a power play opportunity, the Raiders extra man offense was able to do some slick tic-tac-toe passing to open up a shooting lane that defenseman Haley Knight was able to take advantage of with Knight slotting home a high and hard laser from just inside the blue line. There were more offensive fireworks to come from Knight as she followed up her goal with another laser from the wing. This time, however, she clanged it off the post with the rebound going to a wide-open Freddie Sweeney, a third line winger, who tapped it into the net over a sprawling Malcolm Weekes. Sweeney’s timely goal, his fourth of the season, helped the Raiders gain a 2-0 advantage that Kelowna would continue to chip away at but never recover from. Late in the first period the Knights closed the gap a little bit and made it 2-1 off a power play goal by defensemen Piotr Horvat, who rebounded his own shot past Biz Nasty and gave the Knights some momentum going into the locker room for the first intermission.

What momentum was mustered at the close of the first period was quickly wiped away at the start of the second period as Halifax earned a power play opportunity less than a minute into the period and struck it home off an Esa Parmborg blast. The Knights, true to form, refused to quit, however, and closed the gap again with a goal five minutes later from Raquel Castillo Gutierrez who blasted a one-timer home to make it a 3-2 game going into the final period.

After the Castillo Gutierrez goal, both defenses settled down and locked in on one another as neither team could take advantage of opportunities afforded to them until late in the third period. With only seven minutes to play, Halifax winger Freddie Sweeney scored his second goal of the night, deflecting a shot from Taisei-Tiikeri Wawazat who himself earned his third assist of the night on the play. Just over a minute later, Kelowna’s offense answered yet again scoring a goal with five and a half minutes to play to make it 4-3. With time winding down, the Knights put up a furious rally of shots but were stonewalled by Biz Nasty who tallied four saves in the game’s final minutes to hold on for a Halifax victory.

While this victory was much needed and ultimately well deserved, the future schedule only gets tougher and hopefully Halifax can build on the momentum of this victory to keep finding ways to get tough wins. For Kelowna, they ended the night wondering what could have been. Were it not for a few untimely mistakes, this game could have turned out very differently. From Kelowna, this is Quentin Roschambecler signing off for this edition of the Raiders Review.

Action All Night:
The fans were happy and got what they paid for when they saw goals every period by both teams. Nails were bitten and the game went back and forth all night, all goals were 5 minutes apart so nobody was comfortable, Halifax started things out by scoring 2 goals in the 1st period 10 minutes in but just 3 minutes after celebration the Knights would respond and score their own. In the second period Halifax got on the board first again to take a two goal lead but as the pace would start to pick up 5 Gutierrez would get the puck and shoot a hard shot passed Nasty to score and bring his team within 1 again. It took another 28 minutes before we saw a goal but Halifax again took another 2 goal lead scoring with plenty of time left in the game and like we saw all game it was only a few shifts later and Kelowna were within 1 for the third time. In the final minute we see the Knights get their last chance on a beautiful face off slingshot to Icicle, with tremendous speed he dashed up the wing for an open shot and the crowd went silent for a split second until they notice Nasty comes up with the puck after a failed poke check, luckily getting in his glove hand on the low post. Dominance by Sweeney:
Sweeney was all over the highlights for him performance in this game. He scored 2 timely even strength goals that made it clear he was going to be the first star of the game, winning the match for his team late in the 3rd period with little under half a period to go. He ended the game with a total of 6 shots and was a positive player on the ice playing on the 3rd line, nobody saw him coming and he took full advantage, he played 19 minutes but 5 of it was on the a scoreless power play so in he made the most of his minimal even strength minutes. Knights Penalty Problems:
Kelowna wasn't disciplined at all this game and it was the main reason why they ended the night with a loss, getting thrown in the box 3 times a period. Devitt was the biggest pylon earning himself three visits to the box but spent the full 6 minutes and didn't cost his team a goal. The rest of the team didn't get lucky though because Halifax would go on and score two on the other 3 attempts and was the main reason why they were up by 2 and had Kelowna by their neck the full 60 minutes. Offensive Explosion:

In a game that was certainly exciting not only for fans of both teams but fans of hockey in general, the game featured 7 goals in total as the Kelowna Knights lost to the Halifax Raiders 4-3. The first two goals were scored by the Raiders, Halifax defenseman Haley Knight opened up the scoring as she blasted a shot from the blue line past rookie Goalie Malcom Weeks. The next one was scored by Raiders third line Right Winger Freddie Sweeney who slammed home a rebound just before the 17 minute mark. The Knights were able to bring one back at the dying light of the period when second pair defenseman Piotr Horvat scored off his own rebound with 47 seconds left. Halifax came out firing and added to their lead less then a minute into the second period as first line center Esa Parmborg found the puck all alone in the shot after a block a shot. The Knights score a goal five minutes later as rookie winger Raquel Castillo Gutierrez buries a loose puck into the back of the net to pull back to within one. Both teams trade goals in the third, as Freddie Sweeney adds his second goal of the game, and for the Knights left winger Vadim Malichov answered back a minute later. ( 219 words)

Ineffective Power Plays:

In was a rough night for both teams on the man advantage as they went a combines 3/11. The Raiders went 2 for 8 and the Knights went 1 for 3. I know it's hard to say the Raiders had a rough night on the power play when they scored half their goals with a man advantage but they also had eight chances to do so. Both teams suffered from lax passing and relying on dumping and chasing to get control of the puck in the offense zone. Some credit should go to both goalies as they did a pretty good job while playing a man down, ( 113 words)

The Three Stars:

Freddie Sweeney of the Halifax Raiders was the first star of the game. Sweeney had two goals tonight including the game winner, he caused chaos all over the ice and the Knights had a hard time containing him. The second star of the game is Haley Knight. Knight scored the first goal of the night on the Power Play as she blasted a puck from the blue line. She also assisted in the next goal to Freddie Sweeney, and on the Raiders last goal of the night. Knight added two hits, and in my opinion the offensive defenseman should have been the first star of the night. The third star also from Halifax is third line center Taisei - Tiikeri Wawazat. Wawazat had 3 assists for the Raiders and was a real spark plug for their offense. ( 131 word)
