Militia Montreal Militia vs Anaheim Outlaws Outlaws

Game 143

Intro: Tonight, the SMJHL season continues with a clash of Titans. The league leading Anaheim Outlaws face off against the fifth place Montreal Militia. Currently the Outlaws have a record of 23-9-3 while the Militia are sporting a 17-15-3 record for the season. The Outlaws have been led by standout netminder Tibuk Soonika while the Militia are represented by stars such as Hugh Jazz and Herry Morris the IV, let’s see who will gain the edge in tonight’s tilt.

1st Period
Respecting their enemy, the Militia started out strong, being quick to attack and lay down the body to block Outlaws shots and gain possession of the puck. It was through this hard work that the Militia were able to score their first goal at 1:18 of the 1st period, a slapshot that slid beneath Tibuk Soonika’s pads and into the Outlaws net. Being up by a goal did not dissuade the Militia’s attack and they came back at the Outlaws fiercer than ever, and at 3:38 of the 1st period we saw a fight break out between Connor Tanner and Yoshimitsu McCloud with Tanner emerging as the victor. Because of their consistent determination it wasn’t long before the Militia were successful in sending another goal past Soonika, making it 2-0 at 5:49 of the 1st period.  Realizing the hole that they had dug themselves in the Outlaws did what they do best, and they locked down their defense, and they were successful in shutting the door on the Militia for the remainder of the period.  The period ended with 8 shots for the Outlaws while only 7 were needed by the Militia to net two goals.

2nd Period
The second period began much like the first, with aggression. However, this time it was the Outlaws turn to flex their muscles and as the two teams traded shots back at one another, Jukka Jokinen spent some time in the box because of it for roughing. The penalty was killed successfully as the two teams continued to quell each other’s offense, giving the audience watching a yo-yo affect of constantly looking from one side of the rink to the other. The Outlaws would finally break through and score at 7:12 of the 2nd period, putting them on the board and making the score 2-1 for the Militia. After this goal you could feel a shift in the arena and it seemed the advantage was now on the Outlaws side, and even though they were trailing by one goal they were clearly the team on the rise. Although the Militia did their best to sustain their attack, you could judge by the amount of missed shots that the goal by the Outlaws had thrown them off. The period would finish with the Outlaws firing 8 shots on net, while the Militia could not manage a goal on the 9 shots they sent the Outlaws way.

3rd Period
The 3rd period started with a bang as both teams didn’t want to give the other any added edge. For more than half of the period the game was a mix of shots being blocked and penalties being handed out. We saw minors go to Anthony Banthony and Gotta Love Honors Bio for elbowing and holding, and an additional minor thrown at Banthony for interference. It wasn’t until 11:51 of the 3rd period that Yoshimitsu McCloud got his revenge for the beating he took in the first by firing a laser shot past Mike Hunt to tie the game at 2-2. The game was now up for grabs to either side and you could see that both the Militia and Outlaws were keen to take it. What would become a goaltending clash of the ages both Mike Hunt and Tibuk Soonika deferred attacks against them and kept their teams in the game, forcing this hard fought battle to Overtime. The 3rd period would finish with 8 shots for the Outlaws and 7 for the Militia, proving again how close the game had been all along.

Overtime
The goaltending battle continued into Overtime and inspired some courageous shot blocks in both the Outlaws and Militia’s end but none of the chances were enough to break through. Both Mike Hunt and Tibuk Soonika were able to work with their defense and shut the doors of the opposing side. This game would only be resolved through the shootout, it was time to see which of the two goalies would come out on top.

Shootout
The Militia would start the shootout off right with a goal by Militia sniper Ravyn Tedisko, however the Outlaws would answer right back by scoring their own goal, courtesy of Lallo Selman. From there on out however neither side would see the back of the net until Round 6 of the shootout when Nick Connolly sealed the win for the Outlaws, sending the players and the crowd into hysteria.

Final Score
Outlaws Outlaws 3 – 2 Militia Militia

Tonight’s 3 Stars
1 – Olin O’Dowd Militia
2 – Gunnar Petrov Outlaws
3 – Corey Kennedy Outlaws

Comment 1: An Epic Shootout
Tonight's game featured an epic shootout that went six rounds deep. While there is a great debate on whether or not the shootout still belongs in the league, I for one love the shootout. The one on one play makes for some amazing moments. Montreal's Ravyn Tedisko and Anaheim's Lallo Selman both tallied goals for their team in the very first round of the shootout, but then goaltenders Tibuk Soonika and Mike Hunt went super saiyan and refused to let the puck by them for the next 4 rounds. In the 6th round, Anaheim's Nick Connolly was able to get Mike Hunt to bite on a head fake before tucking the puck behind his left pad for the win.

Comment 2: Anaheim's Resilience
This game looked bleam for Anaheim right out of the gates. Less than six minutes into the first period, Montreal had gone up 2-0 and were poised to blow this game wide open. Anaheim took that slap in the face and woke themselves up going forward from there, and refused to let Montreal increase their lead. In the second period, the Outlaws managed to cut the lead in half with a goal from Chuck Goody III. Mid-way through the third period, the Outlaws scored the tying goal off the stick of Yoshimitsu McCloud. Finally as we just mentioned in the previous comment, strong goaltending from Tibuk Soonika and a goals by Lallo Selman and Nick Connolly completed the comeback for Anaheim.

Comment 3: 3 Stars Analysis
Tonight's first star came from the losing side, Olin O'Dowd of the Montreal Militia. O'Dowd scored the first goal of the game for the Militia just a minute into the game. He then added an assist on the power play just a few minutes later. While his team still lost, it certainly had nothing to do with his performance tonight. The second star of the game was awarded to Gunnar Petrov. Petrov assisted on both of the Outlaws' regulation time goals. The third and final star of the game went to Anaheim's Corey Kennedy. Kennedy had an assist on the game tying goal in the third period, and added a couple of hits on top of that.

Comment 1: Unsung Hero

Anaheim picked up the victory, but the first star of the game was Olin O’Dowd of Montreal. The other stars were Gunnar Petrov and Corey Kennedy of Anaheim. The unsung hero was Yoshimitsu McCloud who picked up a goal late in the game to tie it up and force overtime. Additionally, McCloud had 2 hits in the game, played 3:09 on the powerplay and 1:21 on the penalty kill. His 19:07 minutes played was 8th on the team. McCloud played a physical game, and even fought Conor Tanner of Montreal at 3:38 in the 1st period. (100 words)

Comment 2: Old School Hockey

This game reeked of old school hockey. Montreal had 18 hits, Anaheim had 27 hits. Within the first few minutes of the game Yoshimitsu McCloud and Connor Tanner were brawling at center ice. Not long later at 5:32 in the first, Anaheim’s Anthony Archer was called for high sticking which led to Montreal’s second goal of the night. Then in the second period, Jukka Jokinen was called for roughing at 1:47. The physical play didn’t stop there as Gavin Hughes of Montreal was called for slashing at 8:24 in the second. The third period was no different, Anthony Banthony was called for elbowing at 1:50. Chuck Goody III was called for slashing at 12:37. Overall, both teams spent 15 minutes in the sin bin. [b]Comment 3: Last Line of Defense/b]

Ultimately, the last line of defense is the goaltender. In this goalie battle we saw Tibuk Soonika with a 17-5-1 record battle backup goalie Mike Hunt of Montreal with a season record of 0-2-0. These goalies were both tested early. Montreal had seven shots in the first period and two of them managed to beat the good goalie of Tibuk Soonika. Anaheim outshot Montreal with 8 shots, but they could not figure out how to score on the backup, Mike Hunt. At different times in the game both goalies stood on their heads. In the shootout, both goalies gave up goals on their first attempts. Then they topped each shot until Nick Connoly scored on Mike Hunt. Tibuk Soonika improves his record to 18-5-1 with a 21 saves on 23 shots (0.913) performance. Mike Hunt fails to find his first victory and his record moves to 0-2-1 with this 25 saves on 27 shots (0.926) performance. (158 words)

Comment 1:
My three stars

1.Gunnar Petrov 2 assists, +1, 4 shots and a hit. he played 19 minutes and was a factor for the Outlaws all game long and honestly was one of the better players on the night.

2. Yoshimitsu McCloud - Big goal to tie the game up at 2 a peice for the outlaws, got ina fight and was a force all game long for the Outlaw.

3. Olin O'Dowd - he was the best player for the milita, goal, and an a assist. Played a good 200 foot game and was a big reason why montreal got a point tonight

comment 2: Unsung hero
Mike Hunt, he was the back-up goaltender and he played a great game for milita, you really don't see games like what he produced today from your back-up netminder in the SMJHL. He was a wall, and was a big reason why montreal was able to survive with a point in todays matchup. 25 saves on 27 shots, and he gave montreal a chance to win in the shootout as Anahiem needed the 6th round to finally score the game winning goal against him. mike Hunt was a star in todays game and he was a big factor for montreal able to get a point tonight.

Comment 3:
Story of the game, defense wins championships
Both teams had a great defensive performance, there were only 48 shots in the game, 16 blocked shots, it was a close one-goal game, that needed the shootout to get the victory for Anaheim. It was a defensive battle, that features hard-hitting, a fight and two goalies going head to head with 2 very good performances. It is rare to see defensive battles in a regular-season in a junior game but this what the fans saw, maybe something that they did not want. Fans probably hated this game but the coaches on both sides were hiuge fans of their team performances as they really executed each team system.

McCloud McPummels

Here we go, folks! Another meeting between the Anaheim Outlaws and the Montreal Militia! This season hasn't been kind to the Militia when they face the Outlaws, as they've been swept all season long. Our hero of the game, even if he didn't get a star, is none other than Yoshimitsu McCloud!

After going down 1-0, Yoshimitsu decided that the best course of action was to pummel Conor Tanner in the noggin! It didn't turn out so well, as Oliver Klozoff picked up his first of the season on the ensuing major to the two combatants.

Never to be deterred, McCloud picked up his 7th goal of the season early in the third to tie the game. While he may not have gotten any star rankings, he's the first star in my book.

Anthony Banthony Smashthony

Part of the reason that Anaheim has had trhe advantage against the Militia was evident in tonight's game. Anaheim out hit Montreal 26 to 18. Anthony Banthony was a huge factor in that, delivering a whopping 7 hits and picking up just two penalty minutes. A favorite target of his turned out to be Zarley Zalapski, who after the game decided that he was tired of getting beat up and retired from the league.

Banthony after the game said, "I didn't mean to hit him out of the league. My coaches told me to go out there and apply some pressure, so I did. Turns out it was a big part of our win."

Tibuk Stands on His Head

A young Montreal team came into this season ready to make a splash and challenge for the Cup. Then they met Anaheim. Through the 5 game series during the regular season, Montreal managed to pick up just one point - forcing overtime in their last meeting of the season. Tibuk Soonika was absolutely stellar in the season series, and should be a candidate for team MVP. This game should solidify that, after holding off a Montreal team that was desperate for a win against the reigning champions. He gave up 2 goals on 23 shots, and then stopped all 6 shots he faced in the shootout.
